11 City Parks Coldwater is home to over 200 acres of parks. Heritage Park Heritage Park is the in place to go for area residents of all ages. It is a sprawling complex that includes a softball and soccer complex, winding paved trail, eight tennis courts, sledding hill and skateboard park. There are three pavilions, two of which can be reserved for family events; the Heritage Recreation Building popular for basketball and volleyball, Heritage Hall, a place to hold reunions and family picnics and a dog park. Linear Park Coldwater Linear Park is popular for its many mogul fields built by the city for young people who enjoy what are often referred to as mountain-type bikes of varying sizes with knobby tires. It is a particularly popular area during the summer months, located on Riverside Drive just off Jay Street. Rotary Park If you own a boat or like to fish, Rotary Park is your destination. The park includes a well maintained boat launch and seasonal access to the Messenger-Hodunk chain of lakes, with unlimited fishing opportunity, wildlife and abundant scenery. The drive transitions to gravel, and at its end is the entrance to the large wooden fishing pier at the mouth of the Sauk River. The park also includes seasonal restroom facilities near the entrance. Pilot Knob Park Pilot Knob Park is just that, a small neighborhood park located in Pilot Knob, used almost exclusively by area residents. Waterworks Park Waterworks Park is a popular destination to park and grab a bite to eat, particularly during the warmer months. It is a gathering place for geese and duck and a favorite with kids, who enjoy the chance to toss pieces of bread in their direction. The park includes a softball diamond, seasonal restrooms, an open area for soccer and a playground adjacent to Lincoln School. Jaycees Park & Rieth Park Jaycee and Rieth Park may be accessed from Fremont and Lilly streets, or from Riverside Drive. The park includes a basketball court, picnic grills and a large play area. The parks are adjacent to Fremont Street School and its accompanying play area for young children. South Lake Park South Lake Park is located directly across the Sauk River from Rotary Park and is not exactly a park in the traditional sense. It is more of a wildlife habitat, with limited access from Butters Avenue. It is a great place to exercise dogs, watch for deer and enjoy moments of quiet contemplation. Page 10
12 Four Corners Park Located in the heart of the city, at the intersection of US 12 (Chicago Street) and old US 27 (Marshall Street), Four Corners Park presents a striking testimony to the city s history. It is actually four distinct parks, each with a unique story. The northwest quadrant hosts the annual Memorial Day festivities and is the site of the buried time capsule, with artifacts of the city s history. Monuments to those who have served and given the ultimate sacrifice to defend our way of life grace this park. The northeast park carries a military motif, with a gun and carriage from the Civil War and a separate piece from World War II. This park hosts the bands and performers for the popular Entertainment Under the Stars, held during the summer months The stately and historic Coldwater District Library graces the southeast park, with a handsome statue in honor of those who served in the Spanish-American and Philippine Wars. The southwest park includes a sandbox play area along with seating to sit, relax and enjoy the downtown scenery. Jefferson Park includes a play area for young children and is located directly north of Jefferson Elementary School. City Parks Jefferson Park Parkhurst Park Parkhurst Park is the site of the popular Kids Kingdom. Built almost entirely of wood, the sprawling complex includes many nooks and crannies to explore and is a year-round favorite of children. The park includes two pavilions, shuffleboard court and basketball court and restroom facilities. One of the pavilions can be reserved for a small fee. The park is located adjacent to Max Larsen Elementary School. City Park City Park is a small tree studded triangular play area located at the intersection of North Hanchett and Grand Streets. East Pointe Park East Pointe Park is a neighborhood park located at the end of East Pointe Drive. It is a very small park that includes playground equipment for the younger children in the neighborhood. Optimist Park Optimist Park is at the corner of North Hudson Street and Abbott Avenue. This park has two basketball courts and playground equipment for neighborhood children to enjoy. The park is located next to Pansophia Academy. Page 11
