2 President s Message We are starting the month of May with a beautiful course and several new members. We have 33 new members since the first of the year. The membership drive is going well and I hear lots of nice comments about the radio commercials. Sherry is available at all times to visit with and get materials to potential members. New members and guest fees are the keys to our financial strength. A special thank you to the Membership Committee. The month of April was busy with events and May looks even busier. Please be sure and check your calendar for upcoming events and tournaments. Be sure and get your reservation in to Sherry for the Mother s Day Brunch on May 14 th. The Maumelle Four-Ball will take place as usual on the Memorial Day weekend. Be sure you have your team signed up for this highly anticipated and fun-filled event. The tournament starts on Friday, and runs through Sunday, this gives our entire golf membership the opportunity to play on Memorial Day. Many other outside events are scheduled in May so please2318check your calendar to avoid conflicts. Also, please don t forget, you must be signed up on a tee time on regular play days and register in the Pro Shop. The first annual Susan G. Komen Golf Tournament in honor of Jeany Crawford was a huge success. We had 54 teams with a waiting list and everyone was bragging about the quality of our greens and course. The Board would like to thank Jason and his crew for doing a great job on the course and Cimarron and all the staff for their hard work in maintaining the Club for all members and guests to come out and enjoy daily. 3 Manager s Message May is the busiest month at Maumelle Country Club and we have many exciting golf & social activities scheduled. Please read your newsletter closely so that you don t miss out on all the fun! It is time to 2478 hit the tanning beds and treadmills to make sure that you look great in that new swimsuit! The swimming pool officially opens on Saturday, May 27 th. The pool hours for this season will be from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Please adhere to the following rules: Bathing suits must be worn at all times. No cut-offs are allowed in the pool and no swimsuits are allowed in the clubhouse. Children 8 & under must be accompanied by an adult or responsible teenager at all times. Guests of members must be signed in and accompanied by the member. Members are restricted to (2) guests per day and guest fees are $5.00 per guest. Pool parties are also a great way to celebrate that special occasion! If you would like to plan that party by the pool, contact the club to secure a date. Mother s deserve a day off, so treat yours to a special day at Maumelle Country Club. Enjoy our Mother s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 14 th from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Chef Tony and his staff will be2322preparing a delicious assortment of dishes to accommodate everyone in the family. Seating is limited, so please make your reservations by May 12 th. The Club will be open on Memorial Day Monday, May 29 th. There will be a Poolside Party from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Festivities will include a Cookout, Live DJ, Games and Great Drink Specials to welcome the summer. ***Reminder The Club will be closed on Tuesday, May 30 th *** Congratulations to our Employee of the Month for April Malik Carter MCC Kitchen Staff. Cimarron Grubb General Manager/Golf Professional ***REMINDER*** As stated in the MCC Rules and Regulations, guests may only play the course two times a month. This will be tracked by the Pro Shop Staff. We would enjoy the opportunity to entice those guests who play Maumelle CC on a regular basis to join the Club. Take advantage of the new Member Rewards program and help recruit new members to the Club. Please help me in welcoming Assistant Golf Professional, Dustin Hamm, to the Maumelle CC staff. Dustin comes to us from Hot Springs CC. A native of Benton, Dustin has strong ties to the state of Arkansas. His father, Jeff, has been an active PGA Member for many years in the state and is currently the PGA Professional at Longhills GC in Benton, AR. Dustin s personality, work ethic, playing ability and desire to become a PGA Member will prove to be a valuable asset to the membership of MCC. Please make it a point to stop by and introduce yourselves.

4 From the Pro Shop The 2006 MCC Men s Four-Ball Championship is scheduled for May 25 th 28 th. Entry forms are available in the Pro Shop. This is one of Maumelle Country Club s premier events and promises to be enjoyable for all who participate. The field is limited to the first 80 paid teams so don t delay in returning your entry. The MCC Personal Tee Junior Program will begin in June. There are three camps scheduled this summer and the dates are as follows: June 14 3h 16 th July 18 th 21 st August 8 th 11 th The cost for each camp is $100 per member and $125 per guest. These camps provide great instruction in a fun atmosphere. Each camp is limited to 18 juniors and spots will fill up fast. For more information or to sign up your junior please contact the Pro Shop. Also, save the date for the Jr. Club Championship that will be held on August 4 th. May 20 th is the MGA President s Cup Tournament. This fun-filled day is open to both MGA & MWGA members. The format is a 4-Person / 2 Best Ball with an individual competition. Also scheduled is the annual Demo Day. Representatives from several manufacturers will be on hand to let you try out the latest in golf equipment. Complimentary hot dogs and beer 2549 will be provided on the driving range. Start forming your ESPN 2-Person National Golf Challange team NOW! The qualifying for Maumelle CC is scheduled for Saturday, June 17 th. This is a great team event and we need as many participants as possible in order to advance teams to the Regional qualifier2323that we be held in August. The more teams we have, the more teams we advance. 6 Golf Course Update Spring is well on its way and summer is close behind. Spring is an interesting time on the golf course. Trees are blooming and the grass is greening up, rain is falling and weeds are growing. We are now mowing the Bermuda on a pretty regular basis even though it is not really growing very fast yet. As the temperatures rise the grass will respond. The old timers say that when the night time lows get to be 70 degrees is when Bermuda really takes off. The reason this theory works is by that time of year the soil temperatures are plenty warm enough for the turf. Our greens love the spring too. They are really growing right now! This is when the turf produces its roots to sustain the plant though the hot summer months. As the temperature rises the roots tend to shrink. So we are doing everything we can in order to help the turf prepare for the heat. Some of the things we can do to help are fertilize, make sure we do not stress the plants by scalping them down for speed, and manage the moisture levels. In simple terms; if the top inch or two of soil remains moist2342the roots have no reason to grow deeper in search for water. This is why we try to keep the greens as dry as possible and why we have to hand water spots as they get too dry. This process of watching the greens and hand watering as needed is called wilt watching. Our staff is looking for signs of wilt and as those symptoms become visible we hand water the dry spots. Please give the staff a few moments to get off the green or to wave you up before hitting into the green. During the spring, rain showers and thunderstorms are fairly common. Sometimes after these rains we have to ask the membership to play Cart Path Only, when this is the case please remain on the pavement. Driving in the rough does just as much or more damage as driving in the fairways. So please remember to stay Cart Path Only when we post the signs. Thank you and have a great round! Bring a friend and non-members welcome. Once again, we are going to try to organize a monthly bunko group. The late fee will be assessed as in accordance with the Club s bylaws (Article IV, Section 5). Thank you for your cooperation.
