1 LAGUNA NIGUEL RACQUET CLUB s TENNIS CLUB AT MONARCH BEACH October 2011 Messenger Club House Drive, Laguna Niguel, CA ~ Niguel Road, Monarch Beach, CA FIND US ON FACEBOOK! PRO FUTURES 2011 There was some great tennis being played at LNRC. Our Pro Futures Tournament (featuring young players from all over the country vying for a spot on the ATP Tour) was in full swing. Hope you were able to watch the tennis stars of the future!
2 O N E M A N S O P I N I O N We have just completed a management committee meeting where we conducted our five-year review of our Vision, Mission and Core values. Yes we might be in a fun, recreation business ---BUT we must follow the same business principles that ANY business follows. AND we must generate income to be able to keep the club Safe, Clean and WELL MAINTAINED. If we fail to generate the profits required to meet our obligations to our members, we will surely lose members and that will lead to a business failure. Thus while the club business is MUCH more fun than selling dressings and sutures to hospitals, we must follow the same business management concepts or else we risk not having the money available to meet our obligations to our members. Many years ago, we established a management committee of key executives of our club company. I believe in participative management and thus this committee helps us to establish a vision, mission, and core values. Every five years, we review our guidelines and make changes where changes are appropriate. You will be receiving copies of these guidelines soon and if anyone has any questions, please contact me. Our method of operating the company is Management by Objective. We ask every manager and executive to determine objectives, which are defined as a task that has numbers and dates. Once an objective is defined, goals are established and completion dates are set. Then we ask our managers to follow good management techniques, which in my opinion are Plan, Organize, Implement, Motivate and Control. This is what I learned from my mentor Karl Bays and the Management by Objective is what I learned from Rod Brady at Bergen Brunswig. These outstanding Corporate Executives taught me and in turn, I am trying to teach my staff these management techniques. My goal is to train our managers to meet company goals that will allow us to meet our responsibilities to our members YES, we are in a fun industry, but if we do not operate as a business, we will be OUT of the business and I plan for my kids and grandkids to operate this company for many years to come. 3 October is here and with it brings cooler fall weather. Don t let that stop you from coming out to the Club to enjoy tennis or get in a good workout. We have some fun activities lined up for this month. Don t miss the Adult/Child Tournament on October 22. This will be a lot of fun for both parents and kids. We also have our Club Singles Championship happening this month. On the fitness scene, we have our group exercise classes, spin classes, Pilates and yoga classes. There are so many to choose from. Be sure to keep active throughout the month. Have a great month and see you around the Club. It is hard to believe that we are approaching the holidays, with Halloween this month. Time to start thinking about what you can do to make your tennis game better or back to where it once was. One thing that can always help your game and your life in general is to hit the gym and get in shape. We have excellent trainers on hand to get you started back again or to train you toward a goal of fitness that works best for you. Tennis is a demanding sport on both your body and mind. But to give yourself a chance to enjoy the game on a daily or weekend basis, you need to be healthy.as I noticed with the Pro Futures players, they work so hard on the court, but also put in a huge amount of time off-court as well. Speaking of the pros, I hope you all enjoyed the tennis and maybe learned how much time and dedication they put into their sport.as I write this, we are in the second round so I will do a recap of the tournament next month. Though first and foremost, I want to thank all the members who housed a player or offered to do so. It means the world to these guys to have nice families to host them. Our members at LNRC go out of their way to be gracious to all of these hard working young men and it is just awesome the support that is given. Looking forward to an eventful fall and hopefully a not-so-rain-filled winter. Lastly, as you know or may have heard, Ronnie has left us for RCI. It is a lateral move for him and closer to his house. He will still be making matches here at LNRC for singles and other activities as well. Let me know if you have questions regarding his move or his match arranging at LNRC. See you on the court. *1st Cousins!! Brendan son of Scott and Suzanne Spearman born September 14 and Rylie daughter of Steve and Nikki Spearman born September 16. Proud Grandparents Cecil and Jean! *Kudos to Rob Horsch on his success at the USPTA International Championships at Saddlebrook Resort. Rob won the 45 & over doubles title with Kevin Gillette from Meridian, MS. There were over 600 teaching pros in attendance for the annual conference. *Congrats to Jacqueline Stewart & Sabine Ludwig for winning the Girl s 18s Doubles at the 57th Lynn Scott Memorial Riverside Junior Open Tournament this month. *If you have taken home any towelsl during the summer months, please return them. Thank You! *Welcome back Bud Linglebach, who was seen working out with Stacey in the gym! *Parking lot at LNRC will be resurfaced Oct 20th and 21st. There will be club access both days. Jacuzzi at LNRC will be resurfaced in late October. Fall is in the air and so are a lot of tennis balls here at LNRC. I hope you all had a chance to stop by and watch some of the Pro Futures Tennis Tournament this month, because these top ranked players gave their all in a display of true passion for the game and we were able to see just some of the development that goes into the making of a champion tennis player. Mark your calendars for the annual Adult / Child Tennis Tournament on the Sat. Oct. 22nd of this month, because you haven't seen anything until you ve seen our LNRC / TCMB parents and kids, using their tennis strategies and hidden court secrets together to win this tournament.it must be LOVE. Pizza Party follows>>>yummy! Now we cannot let October go by without having the annual Halloween Social, so get dressed-up in costume, bring the kids to the Friday night LNRC Halloween Date Night Party, and join your fellow club members for a Halloween Happy Hour that night. No tricks, just treats! Everyone enjoy October and watch for more Club improvements to start happening this month. We will be working on the LNRC parking lot, parking lot lights, tennis court lights, re-plastering the LNRC spa, and the Top Spin snack bar, to name a few. Sandy G MCORNER
4 LNRC EMPLOYEE PROFILE TCMB Supervisor/Manager Rick Hoban began working for Spearman Clubs, Inc. while attending college in the early '90s. A high school friend, Neel Grover, was working at LNRC and Rick asked him to put in a good word for a job. A week later, Rick found himself interviewing with the front desk manager, Mark Spearman, and he has been employed at the Spearman Clubs ever since. Raised by a mother (LNRC Fitness Professional Donna Hoban) whose passion was sports, nutrition and exercise, Rick was encouraged to be certified as a personal trainer, and accomplished that goal through the American Council on Exercise in As TCMB supervisor, he oversees front desk duties, and monitors tennis courts and maintenance staff. Engaged to his fiancée, Monica, a school teacher, both say that they love their jobs and are presently enjoying a simple life together. Lael's training regimen consists of sprints, distance running, push ups, sit ups, jump training, and stretching. Her volleyball training is on a men s height net (8 inches higher than a women's) and in the sand. Lael said, When I train, it is for doubles, so when I play with four more people on the court, it seems easy. In the summer, Lael plays tennis twice a week and volleyball four times weekly. 5 WHY OXYGEN? For skin to function properly, it must have an adequate supply of oxygen. As we age, the oxygen levels in our skin decrease. The decrease in oxygen can result in lack of collagen synthesis (premature aging), impaired cell renewal (dull rough skin), and hyper pigmentation(age spots). By using Karin Herzog products, we can increase the oxygen levels in the skin to prevent and even reverse these conditions. Karin Herzog medical-grade quality skin care products were developed by the Nobel honored Dr. Paul Herzog. The products are yet safe enough to be used at home or in spa settings. Karin Herzog products have been used medically to treat burns, wounds, skin ulcers and for post surgery healing.
