2 spring season of the year, Laguna Niguel Racquet Club / Tennis Club of Monarch Beach continues to put efforts into healthy and fun Club programming and facilities that support your healthy lifestyle. While doctors write more than 3.4 billion prescriptions per year, and mention medications during more than 70% of office visits, we all know that the Real Wonder Drug is Exercise and Healthy Eating Habits. LNRC has introduced the Top Spin Juice Bar earlier this year in support of this, so we hope you enjoy all the great Fresh Juice and Smoothies blends we offer. The wheatgrass and protein shakes are especially popular with the members, so stop by and try one. April will be a busy, but a fun month with the annual Survivor Calcutta Tournament, Date Night, Clay Court Singles Tournament, and a Friday Night Mixed Doubles Open Courts night. Come to LNRC TODAY, because it's fun, it's good for your health, and it's a place you can share with a friend! G MCORNER As we move into April and the UPCOMING EVENTS Sandy Our condolences to Mary Anne/Logan Mahoney and family in the loss of their loved one. Hats off to our Adult/Child Tournament Winners: Tom/Chase Aplin and our Finalists: Patty/Olivia Gray. 4/1 RCI/LNRC Clay Court Singles RCI 4/14,15 LNRC/RCI Mixed Doubles LNRC 4/27 Date Night 4/27 RCI Ladies Day 4/27 Fri Night Mixed Doubles Open Court 4/27 Cinco de Mayo Happy Hour Grill Party 5/10 Ladies Day Tennis Luncheon 5/12 RCI/LNRC Triathlon 5/19-20 Club Doubles Championships Scott s Spin It s April, and that means Calcutta time. I m sure all of our teams are gearing up for this exciting event. We will be seeing some glamorous costumes as well as some superb tennis. If you have not yet signed up, see Anne to get involved. April is also time for spring break for many of our school-age kids. I m sure they will be enjoying the outdoors - tennis, swimming, working out, etc. Make sure that they take the time to stretch their muscles before going out full force. Not stretching or warming up can cause injury to their muscles and ligaments, which will not be fun, especially during their break from school. Even if it s just five minutes of warming up and cooling down, it will make a big difference. Have a great month! April is here and this only means one thing. The weather, daylight change and summer will be here before you know it. As I always have told myself, it is never too early to prepare for the summer. It is time to get the kids schedules (and yours as well) ready for the best summer ever. We will have a lot for the kids to do this summer, which includes tennis camp that goes on all summer long. The little ones up on Court 6 are a treat to watch and this summer is no different. So make some plans for them to attend a session or two and see how many new friends they make, and how many new lessons on the court will grab their interest. I hope all our members will have a great summer and make time for their families to enjoy the time off. We will also have our swim programs at both clubs that offer lessons and swim teams for the kids, and it should be very exciting to learn in our pools. Lastly, I was asked at our last advisory board meeting about what we will do with the bottom courts that continue to crack. We will patch it one last time in a week, and then redo both of them this summer. We are researching how to fix the back courts permanently. Thanks for your patience on this project, as we will make it right. Have a great spring break and see you on the courts. 3 O N E M A N S O P I N I O N A year ago, I started doing research about JUICE BARS. I talked to a dietitian that specializes in clubs and she told me to be sure to offer RECOVERY drinks. I was embarrassed to ask her what is a recovery drink? She laughed and said--- when you work out, especially a HARD work out like tennis or spin or 30 minutes of cardio or 30 minutes of strength machines - you use the glycogen stored in your body as a source of energy. When your glucose and glycogen are depleted by a hard work out you need to help the body recover by consuming a protein reinforced drink or a carbohydrate drink within 45 minutes. Some people differ on the time to have a drink, but everyone agrees that a recovery drink is needed. As we planned the service counter of the Grill, we planned for an area to serve recovery drinks, as well as smoothies, vegetable and fruit juice drinks to help the people that want to keep their body in top condition. I have been asking our spin instructors and our personal trainers, as well as the tennis pros to encourage you to have a recovery drink after a work out. I had a PERSONAL experience with consuming protein within 30 minutes of a work out. Skiing is a HARD work out and it takes most of us several days of pain to get into SKI SHAPE. I was suffering more than usual this year after the first day of skiing. I remembered the advice of my dietitian friend. After suffering sore muscles big time after the first day of skiing, I ate a bag of peanuts on the way home and had a protein shake when I arrived home. To my amazement and great pleasure, my sore muscles were much better and I felt like I was in MID SEASON SKI SHAPE. I am not a dietitian and do not really understand why the protein helps prevent sore muscles and helps the body to recover---but I suspect that the depleted glycogen and glucose is replaced by the body burning fat rather than burning muscle thus less sore muscle and it is always better to burn fat than muscle. I strongly recommendallof you that play tennis, do spin or work out for more than 30 minutes to enjoy a recovery drink that is loaded with protein and watch the fat melt away and avoid sore muscles. Let me know of any success stories you are willing to share. Cecil Spearman, ces@spearmanclubs.com College update on our players: Brynn Boren is currently playing 1 at University of Tennessee and is ranked 32 in singles and 9 in doubles in the nation. Kristina Smith is playing 1 at UCI and has beat several girls that have national rankings and has the best record on the team again. Joanna Smith is playing 4 and 5 atarizona State and their team is ranked in the top 30. David Masciorini is finishing his last year at East Carolina and had a great year playing 6 singles and doubles. It s also been a great year for Averil Tomaiko, who had been playing singles and doubles for Cal State Fullerton. Laura Wilke and Trevor Dell have had good success at UCSD, as has Jake Michaels at Cornell University. Mark Bloom Sr., Captain this year for the Redlands Bulldogs, is playing 1 doubles and 3 singles and having a great year. Alec Tachovsky is a first year player for University of Louisville.
