The Marietta, GA native has made six starts and one relief appearance for a total of 36.0 innings pitched. He has given up 38 hits (.257 opponents batting average) and 25 walks with 35 strikeouts. The Tigers starter for Sunday has yet to be determined. The Hokies Virginia Tech, led by third-year Head Coach Pete Hughes, enters the series against #18 Clemson with a overall record and 7-10 ACC mark after defeating High Point on the road by a score of on Wednesday. The Hokies are one of the ACC s hottest teams, as they have a league-best four-game winning streak in conference games and six-game winning streak overall. Virginia Tech, who is 10-8 at home, also swept Maryland in a three-game series on the road last weekend. Virginia Tech is averaging 9.1 runs per game and hitting.325 with a.494 slugging percentage and.415 on-base percentage. The team has also totaled 92 doubles, seven triples, 35 home runs, 52 hit-by-pitches, and 38 stolen bases in 50 attempts. Mike Kaminski is hitting a team-best.414. Steve Domecus is batting.397 with four homers and 37 RBIs, while Austin Wates is hitting.362 with a team-best 12 steals. Steve Bumbry, who hit three homers at High Point on Wednesday, has a teamhigh eight home runs. The pitching staff has a 5.20 ERA and.284 opponents batting average along with 269 strikeouts against 127 walks in innings pitched. Sophomore righthander Brandon Fisher has a team-high three saves, 3.00 ERA, and.197 opponents batting average in 21.0 innings pitched over 13 relief appearances. The Hokies are fielding at a.952 clip as well. The Tigers Clemson, ranked as high as #18 in the nation, enters the series at Virginia Tech with a overall record and 11-7 ACC mark after defeating Western Carolina twice by a combined score of 24-3 in a two-game midweek series against Western Carolina. The Tigers also won two of three games at home against #5 Miami (FL) over the weekend. Clemson is 5-7 on opponents home fields as well. The Tigers are averaging 6.9 runs per game and hitting.296 with a.449 slugging percentage and.389 on-base percentage. Clemson has also totaled 64 doubles, 10 triples, 37 homers, and 46 stolen bases in 60 attempts. Ben Paulsen is hitting a team-best.388 with 13 doubles, four triples, eight homers, and 41 RBIs. Kyle Parker is Clemson s hottest hitter of late. He was 7-for-8 in the two-game series against Western Carolina and is hitting.323 with eight homers and 39 RBIs on the season. Jeff Schaus is also hitting.309 with a.430 on-base percentage thanks to 27 walks against only 12 strikeouts. The pitching staff has a 3.64 ERA and.243 opponents batting average. It has allowed 109 walks against 318 strikeouts, good for a 2.9-to-1 strikeoutto-walk ratio. Tomas Cruz has a 2-1 record, three saves, and a 2.12 ERA in 15 relief appearances. The Tigers are fielding at a.968 clip as well. Two Tigers hail from the state of Virginia, Will Lamb (Seaford) and Graham Stoneburner (Richmond). Worth Noting Clemson has a advantage in walks over its opponents this season. Polls The Tigers moved up two spots to #18 in the Sports Weekly coaches poll this week after going 3-2 in five games last week. Clemson also appeared in the Collegiate Baseball poll at #21 after being unranked a week ago, but the Tigers still remained unranked in the Baseball America poll. Clemson has had at least one final top-25 ranking in 12 of Head Coach Jack Leggett s first 15 seasons in Tigertown. The Tigers have also been ranked #1 for 20 weeks by at least one of the three major polls under Leggett. ACC Standings The Tigers are in first place in the ACC Atlantic Division standings with an 11-7 record. Clemson is ahead of Boston College and Florida State, who are tied for second place in the division with a 9-7 record. The Tigers are also tied for the second place in the overall ACC standings among the 12 league members. Georgia Tech (10-5-1) has the ACC s best record, while Clemson and Miami (FL) are tied for the second-best ACC mark. Tigers Have 191 Top-25 Wins Under Leggett Clemson defeated #2 North Carolina on March 6 by a score of 5-4 in 10 innings and beat #24 Florida State on March 21 by a score of 8-7 in 11 innings. Then in a three-game series against #5 Miami (FL) in April, the Tigers won two games. In 16 seasons at Clemson, Head Coach Jack Leggett has 191 wins over teams ranked in the top 25. Only four times in his 15 previous seasons has he had a losing record against teams ranked in the top 25. Leggett Against Top-25 Teams Year Overall Top 25 Top 10 Top Totals Leggett Leading a Consistent Winner Head Coach Jack Leggett has a (.687) record at Clemson in his 16th season. The legendary Bill Wilhelm has the most wins of any 2

3 Notes Tiger coach with 1,161 in 36 seasons ( ) at Clemson. Leggett s 705 wins are second-most in school history. No other Clemson coach has more than 70 wins while in Tigertown. Leggett earned win #700 as the leader of the Tiger program in Clemson s 10-1 win over Duke on April 5, Through Leggett s 15 seasons at Clemson, he had 680 wins. Only four other programs (Florida State, Wichita State, Rice, Miami (FL)) have more wins over that span from Close Games the Norm Clemson has a overall record in Incredibly, 10 of its 12 losses have been by three runs or less, as the Tigers have lost three one-run games, three two-run games, and four three-run games. One of the other two losses was by four runs. In their 25 wins, the Tigers have outscored their opponents , an average margin of victory of 5.5 runs per game. In Clemson s 12 losses, it has been outscored 85-48, an average margin of defeat of just 3.1 runs per game. Walking Up in 2009 The Tigers have an on-base percentage 93 points higher than their batting average thanks to totaling 178 walks in 37 games (4.8 per game). Three Tigers, Brad Miller (31), Mike Freeman (30), and Jeff Schaus (27) have all totaled at least 27 walks and are among the ACC leaders in that category. Freeman is batting.295, but his on-base percentage is.412. Schaus is hitting.309, but he has a.430 on-base percentage. The same is true with Miller, who is hitting.283 with a.413 on-base percentage thanks to a plethora of walks. Spreading the Wealth Due to a rash of injuries and a wealth of young talent, Clemson has used many players in the field this season. Only six Tigers have enough plate appearances (minimum of 3.0 per game) to qualify for the ACC lead in batting average, but 14 Tigers have totaled at least 31 at-bats. Furthermore, 12 Tigers have started at least 11 games in the field. Infielders Mike Freeman, Brad Miller, and Ben Paulsen are the only Tigers to start every game this season. Finding the Zone The Tiger pitching staff has a solid 2.9-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season, as it has 318 strikeouts against only 109 walks. The Tiger bullpen even has better numbers. It has allowed just 54 walks with 159 strikeouts (2.9-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio) in innings pitched. Tigers Pitch First No-Hitter Since 1984 Five righthanders combined to pitch a no-hitter in Clemson s 14-0 win over South Carolina-Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on March 18. Justin Sarratt, Scott Weismann, Kyle Deese, Tomas Cruz, and Matt Vaughn combined to allow just two baserunners, one on an error in the outfield on a routine flyball in the first inning and one on a walk in the eighth inning. The Tigers turned a double play in the eighth inning, meaning the five pitchers combined to face just one batter over the minimum. Sarratt pitched the first 5.0 innings, allowing no walks with two strikeouts to earn the win. Weismann, Deese, Cruz, and Vaughn each pitched an inning to close out the no-hitter. The five pitchers combined to allow only one walk with seven strikeouts. It was a special game for Deese, a red-shirt freshman from Inman, SC. After sitting out the entire 2008 season, Deese made his debut in a Tiger uniform against the Spartans. He pitched a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout. It was not the first time the Tigers flirted with a no-hitter in Against Furman 15 days earlier at home, Clemson led 2-0 with no one on base, two outs, and one strike away from a no-hitter in the ninth inning. However, an infield single ended Clemson s no-hit bid. On the next pitch, Brian Harrison hit a two-run homer to tie the score. Furman was later victorious by a score of 4-2 in 14 innings. The Tigers last no-hitter prior to 2009 came in the second game of a doubleheader on March 6, 1984, when Scott Parrish no-hit The Citadel in a seven-inning game at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson s no-hitter against the Spartans was only its second involving multiple pitchers. Righthanders Kevin Brady, Tomas Cruz, Alex Frederick, David Haselden, Richard Mounce, and Scott Weismann along with lefthanders Chris Dwyer and Will Lamb have all been a big reason the Tigers have a solid 3.64 ERA and.243 opponents batting average this season. Those eight pitchers have a combined 7-3 record and four saves in innings pitched. They have also allowed 45 earned runs (3.04 ERA), 100 hits in 480 at-bats (.208 opponents batting average), and 37 walks with 116 strikeouts (3.1-to-1 strikeoutto-walk ratio). Four Tigers Signaling Success on Two Fields Clemson might have the best group of quarterbacks of any baseball team in the country. Four Tigers, Chris Dwyer, Richard Mounce, Kyle Parker, and Matt Vaughn, were standout signal-callers in high school. And one (Parker) actually plays on the Tiger football team and will compete for the starting quarterback job in Head Coach Jack Leggett Full Name: Jackson Scott Leggett. George Mason Clemson s Final Rankings Year BA CB SW NP NP NP NP NP NP Weekly Rankings (April 13, 2009) Date BA CB SW W-L Pre NP Final NP - no poll Year BA CB SW Dwyer, a freshman lefthander from Swampscott, MA, led his high school teams to a 38-2 record in four years as the starting quarterback and earned all-conference honors all four seasons. He was also a first-team All-New England pick and Boston Globe Player-of-the-Year at Salisbury (CT) School who passed for over 5,100 yards and 58 touchdowns along with 21 rushing touchdowns in his career. Mounce, a freshman first-baseman and righthander from Columbia, SC, was named Mr. Football in South Carolina as a senior at Blythewood High School. He was his team s offensive MVP in the Shrine Bowl after being named AAA Offensive Player-of-the-Year. As a senior, he completed passes (68.2 percent) for 2,416 yards and 34 touchdowns against just two interceptions and rushed for 667 yards in 10 games. Mounce led his team to a 33-1 record in his high school career and teamed with current Tiger wide receiver Marquan Jones to set numerous school records. Parker, a sophomore outfielder from Jacksonville, FL, red-shirted on the gridiron in 2008 and will compete for the starting job in Like 2008, he went through spring practice with the football team in In the 2009 Spring Game, he completed passes for 171 yards and one touchdown pass against no interceptions, and he also added a rushing touchdown. The First-Team All-ACC player was successful in juggling the two sports in 2008 and did the same in 2009 during the spring football season. Parker, who graduated from Bartram Trail High School a semester early in order to play baseball at Clemson in 2008, was the #34 football prospect in the nation and #4 quarterback in the nation out of high school according to ESPN.com. He had over 2,500 passing yards and 15 touchdowns along with over 1,000 rushing yards as a senior. Vaughn, a senior righty and captain from Summerville, SC, starred as a quarterback at Summerville High School under the legendary John McKissick, the nation s all-time winningest high school coach. Vaughn was one of the top-50 quarterbacks in the nation according to PrepStar. As a senior at Summerville High School, he quarterbacked alongside then-freshman A.J. Green, a current Georgia star who is one of the nation s top wide receivers. The fact that Clemson has so many quality football players on its roster is fitting due to the fact that Head Coach Jack Leggett was also a standout football player at Maine. He starred as a defensive back and placekicker for the Black Bears from Leggett still holds the school record for longest field goal with a 52-yarder. Cruzing on the Mound Junior righty Tomas Cruz (Amarillo, TX) has used his ability to change speeds to allow him to be extremely effective out of the bullpen in his first year at Clemson in In 29.2 innings pitched over 15 relief appearances, the junior college transfer is 2-1 with a team-high three saves, a 2.12 ERA, and.155 opponents batting average. He has also allowed just 16 hits and nine walks with 27 strikeouts. Dwyer s Masterful Outing vs. #5 Hurricanes Freshman lefthander Chris Dwyer (Swampscott, MA) had a masterful performance against one of the nation s best teams in #5 Miami (FL) in the second game of a doubleheader on April 11 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. He pitched a complete game two-hitter to lead Clemson to a 9-1 win. He earned ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. He also was named to the Brooks Wallace Award National All-Star Lineup and was the Southeast Region Player-of-the-Week by CollegeBaseballInsider.com thanks to his outing. In 9.0 innings pitched, Dwyer allowed just two hits, one run, and four walks with 10 strikeouts. He became the first Tiger to pitch a complete game in He allowed just two runners past first base, including only one runner past second base, during the entire game. On the season, Dwyer has a 4-2 record and 4.40 ERA in 47.0 innings pitched over a team-high nine starts. He has allowed only 35 hits (.210 opponents batting average) and 18 walks with 46 strikeouts. Dwyer leads the team in innings pitched and is second in strikeouts in No freshman has led Clemson in either category since 1997, when righthander Ryan Mottl led the Tigers in both as a freshman. Harman Continues to Throw Strikes Sophomore lefthander Casey Harman (South Burlington, VT) had a 4.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio when he struck out 44 against only 10 walks in 44.0 innings pitched as a freshman in That strikeout-to-walk ratio was the sixth-best mark in Clemson history for a season. In 2009, he has continued his outstanding ratio, as he has 37 strikeouts against only eight walks (4.6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio). Harman has 81 strikeouts against only 18 walks in 81.1 innings pitched in his career. His 4.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio would be the second-best mark in Clemson history if he had enough innings to qualify (100.0 is the minimum). Harman started the season as a long reliever, but he made his first start of the season against Wake Forest in the second game of a doubleheader on March 13. He allowed just one run in 6.1 innings pitched to earn the win. In 2009, he has a 3-3 record and 4.58 ERA in 37.1 innings pitched over 13 appearances (five starts). Johnson Back in the Lineup Sophomore outfielder Addison Johnson (Pfafftown, NC) was one of Clemson s best hitters in the latter stages of his freshman season in But two different injuries forced him to miss all of 2008 and red-shirt. His loss was a tough blow to the Tigers due to his ability to stir things up on the bases and be Clemson s sparkplug as the leadoff batter. He has made his return to the lineup in 2009 and has wasted little time making his presence felt, especially on the basepaths. In 29 games (28 starts), he has nine stolen bases in 11 attempts. Johnson had eight steals during his entire freshman season. He also has tremendous range in centerfield and has saved many runs for Tiger pitchers. Lamb a Dual Threat Freshman Will Lamb (Seaford, VA) came to Clemson as a dual threat in that he was an oustanding outfielder and pitcher at York High School a season ago. He has continued his dual roles as a Tiger in

5 Notes In his first significant action on the mound, the lefthander pitched 4.2 innings in relief at #2 North Carolina on March 7. He allowed just one hit (a single) and no runs to keep the Tigers in the game against one of the nation s best hitting teams. Then in his first career start in the field against Michigan State on March 10, he went 3-for-4 with a walk, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. He also earned his first career save in Clemson s 4-1 win over Wake Forest in the first game of a doubleheader on March 13. On the season, Lamb is 14-for-51 (.275) at the plate with eight runs, five RBIs, and three steals in 19 games (11 starts). On the mound, he has allowed 13 hits, three runs (1.69 ERA), and four walks with 10 strikeouts in 16.0 innings pitched over nine appearances (one start). His versatility is crucial on the road due to the fact that ACC teams are only allowed to have 25 active players on conference road trips. McKinney s Sidearm Delivery Effective Senior righthander Clinton McKinney (Greenville, SC) struggled in his first season at Clemson in 2008 when he had a 9.00 ERA in 15 relief appearances. But 2009 has been a different story for the sidearm reliever. In 2009, he has provided the Tigers with outstanding work out of the bullpen. In 14.2 innings pitched over seven relief appearances, he has a 3.07 ERA and 14 strikeouts against only four walks. He also owns a 2-0 record, victories against Elon in the first game of a doubleheader on March 24 and against Duke on April 3. Prior to his outing against Elon, he had only made two relief appearances for a total of 2.0 innings pitched in Clemson s first 20 games of the season. Against the Phoenix, he pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of two-hit ball with three strikeouts in Clemson s 5-3 win. Then against the Blue Devils, he allowed just four hits, one unearned run, and no walks with three strikeouts in the final 4.1 innings in the Tigers 7-3 win. Miller Going Gloveless at the Plate Freshman shortstop Brad Miller (Windermere, FL) never used batting gloves at the plate during his prep career at Olympia High School, where he earned numerous accolades. When Miller, who is one of only three Tigers to start every game this season, started his first season at Clemson, he decided to wear batting gloves on a regular basis, a period that lasted the first 20 games of In those 20 games, he hit just.222 (16-for-72). So Miller decided to make a change back to his old ways of not wearing batting gloves starting with the doubleheader against Elon on March 24. That move has helped to pay dividends, as he is hitting.348 (23-for-66) in the last 17 games since making the switch. And that includes two outs when opponents made a leaping catch at the wall to rob him of extra-base hits. Overall, he is hitting.283 with two homers and 21 RBIs. He has also walked 31 times against only 17 strikeouts and has a.413 on-base percentage along with eight steals. Parker Shining Against ACC Competition Sophomore outfielder Kyle Parker (Jacksonville, FL) is hitting.323 with eight homers, 39 RBIs, and a.543 slugging percentage in 34 games this season. But in his 15 ACC regular-season games, he is hitting.379 with six home runs, 17 RBIs, and a.707 slugging percentage. That trend is similar to his numbers as a freshman in 2008, when he hit.303 with 14 homers, 50 RBIs, and a.559 slugging percentage overall. But in ACC regular-season games, he hit.336 with 10 homers, 34 RBIs, and a.673 slugging percentage. Therefore, 16 of his 22 career home runs (73 percent) have come in ACC regular-season games even though only 44 of his 91 career games (48 percent) have been against ACC competition. Parker also nearly tied a school record that has stood for 26 years. In a three-game span against #5 Miami (FL) and Western Carolina from April 12-15, he had a hit in eight consecutive official at-bats. He was one hit away from tying the school record for consecutive hits against the Catamounts on April 15, already having registered a 4-for-4 night. In his fifth official at-bat of the game, he lined a ball to the left side of the infield, but it was right at the third baseman for an out. He fell just one hit shy of the Tiger record held by Bob Paulling, who had nine straight hits in Ironically, Paulling, like Parker, played both football and baseball at Clemson. Parker s Two-Sport Day April 11, 2009 is a day Kyle Parker will never forget. At 1:00 PM, he suited up to start for the White squad in Clemson s Spring Football Game. All he did was complete passes for 171 yards and one touchdown against no interceptions along with a rushing touchdown to lead his team to a victory in the game that ended at approximately 3:10 PM. But his day was far from over. Since Clemson s series-opener scheduled for the previous night was rained out, Clemson and #5 Miami (FL) played a doubleheader beginning at 3:34 PM on Saturday. Parker rushed to change out of his football uniform at Memorial Stadium, had to run across the street, then change into his baseball uniform at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. He did not make it in time to be penciled in the starting lineup for the first game, but he came off the bench in the third inning to hit a pinch-hit single to score a run. For that game, he was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs. Then in the second game of the doubleheader, he was 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs, and a walk. Therefore in the doubleheader, he was 3-for-7 with two home runs and five RBIs. All in a day s work for Parker. Parker also received ACC Player-of-the- Week honors on April 13 for his efforts in five games from April He went 8-for-18 (.444) with two doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs, four runs, and three walks in the five games, two against arch-rival South Carolina and three against the #5 Hurricanes. He had at least one hit and one RBI in all five games (and at least two RBIs in four of the five games) during the week. Paulsen Leading Tigers in Hitting Junior first-baseman Ben Paulsen (Acworth, GA) is hitting a team-best.388 in 37 games this season. He also has 13 doubles, four triples, eight homers, 41 RBIs, and a.447 on-base percentage. He has a team-high 16 multi-hit games, including one Tiger Tidbits Clemson s Record... He had one of his best ACC series at Boston College on March 27,28. In three games, he was 6-for-10 with four runs, two triples, one homer, five RBIs, and three walks to lead the Tigers to two wins in three games against the Eagles. The following weekend in the series against Duke, he was 7-for-12 with four runs, two doubles, two homers, and eight RBIs. Against #5 Miami (FL) the next weekend, he was 5-for-13 with one double, two triples, and four RBIs. Therefore in his last three ACC series (nine ACC games), he is 18-for-35 (.514) with 10 runs, three doubles, three triples, three homers, and 17 RBIs. Sarratt Pitches Gem Against #1 Georgia Junior righthander Justin Sarratt (Gaffney, SC) toed the rubber against the nation s top-ranked team in Georgia on April 1 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium and did what few teams have done this year...shut down the Bulldog bats. Despite the Tigers losing a ninth-inning lead and eventually falling 4-2, Sarratt pitched a gem against the Bulldogs. For his effort, he was named ACC Pitcher-of-the-Week. In a career-long 8.0 innings pitched, he allowed just three hits, one run, and one walk with 12 strikeouts. The 12 strikeouts were the most by a Tiger since April 14, 2001 when Steve Reba struck out 12 against Duke in Clemson s 10-1 win. In fact, in Sarratt s previous 47 career appearances, he had never struck out more than four batters in a game. He pitched admirably against a team that entered the week 10th in the nation in scoring and was averaging nearly 10 runs per game. After yielding a double to lead off the game, he retired 17 batters in a row as well. It was not the first time in 2009 that he put on a dominating performance at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. As a starter against South Carolina-Upstate on March 18, he pitched 5.0 innings and earned the win in Clemson s 14-0 no-hit victory. He was a part of the Tigers first no-hitter since On the season, Sarratt is 3-1 with a 4.96 ERA and.234 opponents batting average in 32.2 innings pitched over 10 appearances (six starts). He has also allowed just six walks with 23 strikeouts, an outstanding 3.8-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That number has been consistent with his career strikeout-to-walk ratio. In 91.1 innings pitched over 50 career appearances (eight starts), he has allowed just 17 walks with 62 strikeouts. That equates to a 3.6- to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.68 walks per nine innings pitched mark. If he had enough innings to qualify (100.0 is the minimum), his strikeout-to-walk ratio would be third-best in Clemson history, while his walks per nine innings pitched mark would be the best mark in Tiger history. Schaus Showing His Power & Patience Sophomore outfielder Jeff Schaus (Naples, FL) has six home runs and 20 RBIs this year. His power numbers are somewhat of a surprise considering that he only hit three long balls as a freshman in But all three of those homers came within the last seven games of the season. He has also displayed a keen eye at the plate, as he has a.430 on-base percentage thanks to 27 walks against only 12 strikeouts in Captain Vaughn Senior righthander Matt Vaughn is the Tigers lone team captain in In recent years, there has been at least two co-captains on the team. But in 2009, Vaughn is the lone captain as the team s top leader. He was also one of 40 players on the NCBWA Stopper-of-the-Year Award Watch List in the preseason. We have one team captain in Matt Vaughn, said Head Coach Jack Leggett in the preseason. Matt brings to the table a competitive, loyal spirit every single day he comes out to the field. He works extremely hard. He has battled through a couple of injuries that sidelined him for the early part of the season. He s a tough, hard-nosed competitor that loves Clemson and is loyal to our program. He is a good leader and everyone looks up to him, so he is the right guy for that role. Vaughn won the Tiger Baseball Award as a junior in The award is given to the team s best leader. So it was only fitting that Vaughn be named team captain in The Summerville, SC native made his 2009 debut on the mound on March 10 against Michigan State when he pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts. He had shoulder surgery during the offseason and did not make an appearance during the first 10 games of the season. He has made 10 relief appearances for a total of 12.2 innings pitched in He is 2-1 with two saves and 10 strikeouts. He now has 14 career saves, tied for sixth-most in Clemson history. On March 18, He capped off one of Clemson s most memorable games in recent years. Against South Carolina-Upstate at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, he pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to close out Clemson s no-hitter, its first since The Tigers defeated the Spartans 14-0, and he was on the mound when he struck out Eric Guillen for the game s final out. In game-one on February 20, Clemson stole nine bases and capitalized on six errors to defeat Charlotte 8-3. It was the most steals in a game by the Tigers since Addison Johnson, who missed all of 2008 due to injury, was 3-for-4 with three runs and three steals, while Kyle Parker was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Mike Freeman, Jeff Schaus, and Miller added two steals apiece. Clemson broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning thanks to six steals and three 49er errors. In the freshman lefthander s first career outing, Dwyer allowed just two hits and one walk in earning the victory, while Kevin Brady and Ryan Hinson combined to pitch the final 2.1 innings to close out the four-hit shutout. The three Tiger hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts against one walk and only one 49er advanced past second base. Clemson scored all four of its runs after the fifth inning, highlighted by Miller s two-run single in the eighth inning. Miller went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Richard Mounce added a pinch-hit, run-scoring double. In game-three on February 22, Wilson Boyd hit a walkoff single in the 10th inning to give Clemson a 6-5 win over Charlotte. The Tigers trailed 5-0 before they scored three runs in the seventh inning on home runs by Paulsen and Miller. Clemson then scored two runs in the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit to tie the score. With two outs and no one on base in the 10th inning, the Tigers loaded the bases before Boyd lined a single to right-center for Clemson s first walkoff hit since Paulsen went 3-for-4 to lead Clemson. Tomas Cruz and Hinson combined to pitch 4.0 hitless and scoreless innings in relief to close out the game, while Hinson recorded the victory. Tigers Pull Away for 8-2 Win Over Wofford Clemson, ranked #19 in the nation, scored seven runs in its final three at-bats to down Wofford 8-2 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on February 25. Clemson added three insurance runs in the eighth inning on home runs by John Nester and Matt Sanders on consecutive pitches. Neither player started the game as well. Ben Paulsen went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Mike Freeman had four of Clemson s eight walks. Casey Harman picked up the win by pitching 1.1 hitless and scoreless innings in relief, while six Tiger pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts against only two walks. Gamecocks Score Late to Down Tigers 3-1 DeAngelo Mack s solo homer in the ninth inning gave South Carolina the lead and the Gamecocks held on for a 3-1 win over #19 Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on February 28. Matt Sanders solo homer in the sixth inning tied the score. Then with one out in the ninth inning, Mack s opposite-field long ball and a Gamecock insurance run later in the frame proved to be the difference. Three Gamecock hurlers limited the Tigers to just two hits and did not allow a Clemson leadoff batter to reach base. Alex Farotto pitched 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings in relief to earn the win. Tiger reliever Casey Harman pitched 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs, and no walks with six strikeouts. Four Tiger pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts as well. In the ninth inning, the Tigers were one strike away from pitching a no-hitter, but an infield single broke up the no-hit bid. On the next pitch, Brian Harrison blasted a two-run homer to tie the score. After Clemson squandered several opportunities in extra innings, Reese Wade s RBI fielder s choice in the 14th gave Furman the lead, then it added an insurance run. Both teams managed just six hits, while neither team committed an error. Chris Dwyer, Scott Weismann, Will Lamb, and Ryan Hinson combined to no-hit Furman through 8.2 innings. Ben Paulsen had a game-high three hits for the Tigers, who left 10 runners on base. In game-two on March 7, North Carolina scored four runs, all on bases-loaded walks, in the third inning and cruised to a 5-2 win over Clemson. Both teams scored one run in the first inning, then North Carolina took a four-run lead with four runs in the third inning.
