Tigers Picked Second in ACC Atlantic Clemson was picked to finish second in the ACC Atlantic Division by the 12 league coaches in the preseason. The Tigers received four first-place votes to win the ACC Atlantic Division, just behind Florida State s seven first-place votes. Behind Florida State and Clemson in the ACC Atlantic Division were N.C. State, Wake Forest, Boston College, and Maryland. North Carolina was picked to win the ACC Coastal Division title. Miami (FL), Virginia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Duke rounded out the ACC Coastal Division preseason picks. The Tar Heels were picked to win the ACC overall title with seven first-place votes. Polls Clemson jumped four spots to #19 in the Baseball America poll on Monday after sweeping Mercer in three games over the weekend. Clemson also stayed at #13 in the Collegiate Baseball poll. There will not be another Sports Weekly poll released until next week, as Clemson was ranked #16 in its preseason poll. Clemson ended its third season in a row ranked in the top 15 in the nation in 2007, as Clemson has had at least one final top-25 ranking in 12 of Head Coach Jack Leggett s first 14 seasons in Tigertown. The Tigers have also been ranked #1 for 20 weeks by at least one of the major polls in Head Coach Jack Leggett s 15th season at Clemson. Poll Consistency Clemson had a streak of 48 consecutive weeks being ranked in the top 25 by at least one of the three major polls dating from 2005 to the end of the 2007 season. And since the Tigers are ranked in the top 25 for the second straight week in 2008, that streak is up to 50. With the Tigers preseason top-25 rankings in 2008, it marked the 20th straight year that Clemson had at least one preseason top-25 ranking. Tigers Have 184 Top-25 Wins Under Leggett The Tigers have an 0-1 record against top-25 ranked teams in In 15 seasons at Clemson, Head Coach Jack Leggett has 184 wins over teams ranked in the top 25. Only three times in his first 14 seasons has he had a losing record against teams in the top 25. Leggett Against Top-25 Teams Year Overall Top 25 Top 10 Top Totals Leggett Leading a Consistent Winner Head Coach Jack Leggett has a (.698) record at Clemson in his 15th season. The legendary Bill Wilhelm has the most wins of any Tiger coach with 1,161 in 36 seasons ( ) at Clemson. Leggett s 654 wins are second-most in school history. No other Clemson coach has more than 70 wins while in Tigertown. Through Leggett s first 14 seasons at Clemson, he had 649 wins. Only three other programs (Florida State, Wichita State, Rice) had more wins over that span from Furthermore, he has led the Tigers to at least 39 wins every year he has been at the helm of the program. Clemson along with Florida State and Wichita State are the only three programs in the nation to win at least 39 games every year since Hogan Riding 21-Game Hitting Streak Senior catcher Doug Hogan (Columbia, SC) ended 2007 on a 15-game hitting streak and has had a hit in each of the six games this year, meaning he has a current 21-game hitting streak. During the streak, he is 36-for-86 (.419) with 11 doubles, a triple, six homers, and 22 RBIs. Hogan, one of three team captains, is one of only two seniors on the 2008 squad. 2

3 2008 Clemson Baseball Notes Widmann Makes Triumphant Return Junior shortstop Stan Widmann (Hurst, TX) has overcome a serious neck injury that forced him to miss all but six games in He is healthy for 2008 and made a successful return to the lineup against Mercer in the season-opening series. He was 4-for-11 (.364) with three runs scored as the leadoff batter and did not commit an error in 11 chances in the field. Overall in 2008, he is 9-for-25 (.360) with two doubles, two walks, and no strikeouts. The fact that he can return at all is a testament to the outstanding physical condition Widmann was in when he suffered the injury. He was forced to wear a halo for months. Head Coach Jack Leggett can relate, as he also suffered a serious neck injury and had to wear a halo after a skiing accident in Boyd Small in Stature, Big on Power Sophomore outfielder Wilson Boyd (Hickory, NC) hit just two home runs, both on the road, as a freshman in The 5 8, 175-pounder has already surpassed that total in 2008, as he has hit five home runs in six games this season. Boyd leads the team in homers, RBIs (11), and runs scored (9) this season along with hitting.360. He also has a.429 on-base percentage thanks to three walks against just two strikeouts. In the series-finale against Mercer on February 24, Boyd highlighted a nine-run third inning in the Tigers 10-3 win. In the frame, he hit a one-out, solo homer to right field. Later in the inning, he hit a two-out, three-run homer to right field to cap the scoring. It was just the fourth time in school history that a Tiger hit two home runs in an inning. The other three occurrences all came against Maryland, including Brooks Shumake (1982), Chuck Baldwin (1986), and Kyle Frank (2003). Epps Steps Up Early Freshman outfielder Chris Epps (Stone Mountain, GA) made an instant impact in his first collegiate series against Mercer on February 23,24. In three games, he was 6-for-10 (.600) with five runs scored, a homer, four RBIs, and three walks to help the Tigers to a sweep of the Bears. Epps was 3-for-3 with a walk in the seasonopener, then he had a hit in each of his first two plate appearances the following game. Therefore, he had a hit in each of his first five official at-bats and reached base safely in each of his first six plate appearanes. Nester Making Most of Opportunities Freshman catcher John Nester (Greer, SC) has played five games (all off the bench) and totaled five at-bats in 2008, but he has made the most of his opportunities. In two games, he has come off the bench and hit a home run. Against Mercer on February 24, he hit a solo homer, then he hit a two-run homer against High Point on February 27. With starting catcher Doug Hogan playing his final season at Clemson, Nester is in line to compete for the starting job behind the plate next season. Stoneburner s Long Wait Over Red-shirt freshman righty Graham Stoneburner (Richmond, VA) had to wait quite a while to make his debut on the mound. After missing his senior season at Mills E. Godwin High School due to injury, he suffered a torn ACL just prior to the 2007 season at Clemson. After receiving a medical red-shirt in 2007, he started on the mound against Mercer on February 24 and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings of three-hit ball (all singles) to earn the victory. Stoneburner also allowed only one walk with three strikeouts. On the season, Stoneburner has a 1-0 record and 2.70 ERA in two starts. He has also walked just two batters in 10.0 innings pitched. Preseason Honors Several Tigers received accolades in the preseason, including nine players by Baseball America. Doug Hogan is on the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, and he also is a preseason third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Hogan was tabbed as the #17 senior in the nation by Baseball America. Juniors D.J. Mitchell (#45) and Ryan Hinson (#47) were among the top 50 in their class, while Addison Johnson was listed as the #25 sophomore in the country. Four Tiger freshmen were listed among the top-50 in their class, including Graham Stoneburner (#14), Josh Thrailkill (#27) (he is listed as a red-shirt freshman by Baseball America but is actually a sophomore), Jeff Schaus (#42), and Trent Rothlin (#46). Mitchell (#47) and Hinson (#49) were also listed among the top-100 college prospects in the preseason. Mitchell was listed as the #9 ACC prospect for the 2008 draft, while Hinson was listed #10. Johnson was listed as the #3 ACC prospect for the 2009 draft as well. Future ACC Tournament Sites The 2008 ACC Tournament will be played at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville (FL), where the tourney was played in 2005, 2006, and In 2009, the ACC Tournament will be held in Boston, MA at historic Fenway Park. Locations for the tournament after the 2009 season have yet to be determined. Tigers Open Season With Sweep of Mercer Clemson, ranked #13 in the country, swept Mercer in a three-game series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on February 23,24. The Tigers outscored the Bears 28-13, as 16 of Clemson s runs came in the third inning. Clemson hit.350 against Mercer s.238 batting average and walked 14 times while striking out just 10 times. Chris Epps went 6-for-10 to lead the Tigers, while Wilson Boyd was 5-for-12 with three homers and six RBIs. Doug Hogan added five hits, including three doubles and a homer, as well. Clemson played outstanding defense, committing just one error, and had a 4.00 ERA in the series. In game-one on February 23, which was the first game of a doubleheader, Clemson totaled 16 hits and broke open the game with five runs in the third inning en route to a 12-5 victory over the Bears. Wilson Boyd, Doug Hogan, and Epps all had three hits apiece, while Alex Lee added two hits and four Head Coach Jack Leggett Full Name: Jackson Scott Leggett Born: March 5, 1954 in Bangor, ME Education: B.A. degree in physical education and minor in history at Maine (1976); master s degree in teacher education at Vermont (1980) Playing Experience: Four-year letterman (baseball) at Maine ( ); three-year letterman (football) at Maine ( ) Coaching Experience: Head coach at Vermont ( ); head coach at Western Carolina ( ); assistant head coach at Clemson (1992,93); head coach at Clemson ( ) Family: Son Tanner (24) and daughter Colby (22); wife Karen Leggett s Clemson Head Coaching Record Year Overall ACC Finish NCAA 1994^ st Regional st CWS nd CWS th Regional T-2nd Regional rd Super Regional nd CWS nd Super Regional th CWS T-3rd Regional T-4th Regional nd Super Regional 2006^ *1st CWS *2nd Super Regional * - Atlantic Division; ^ - ACC Tournament Champion Leggett s Head Coaching Record By School School Seasons Years W-L Pct. The Bears scored a run in the ninth inning, but they could get no closer. Starter D.J. Mitchell earned the win, as he allowed just three hits and three runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Clemson Topples High Point 12-3 Behind four home runs, #13 Clemson blasted High Point 12-3 on February 27 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson Rallies Late to Top Cougars 7-6 Clemson, ranked #13 in the nation, hit three homers and scored two runs in the eighth inning to rally past College of Charleston 7-6 at Patriots Point Stadium on February 29. With the Tigers trailing 3-0, Wilson Boyd and Doug Hogan hit backto-back homers to tie the score in the third inning. Ben Paulsen s solo homer in the sixth inning gave Clemson the lead, but the Cougars scored three runs in the seventh inning to regain the advantage. However, J.D. Burgess RBI double and College of Charleston s subsequent error on the play gave the lead back to the Tigers. Matt Vaughn pitched 2.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to record the save. Hogan, Paulsen, and Kyle Parker each had three hits to lead Clemson s 13-hit attack, which included seven extra-base hits. Havens Leads Gamecocks Over Tigers 10-1 Reese Havens hit a grand slam and totaled five RBIs to lead #3 South Carolina to a 10-1 victory over #13 Clemson at Sarge Frye Field on March 1. Havens two-out grand slam in the second inning came after a costly error, one of two by the Tigers that led to six unearned runs in the game. Clemson, who had eight hits, could not string together hits, as it left nine runners on base to the Gamecocks four. J.D. Burgess double in the seventh inning plated Alex Lee for the Tigers lone run. Lee also went 2-for-2 with a walk. Mike Cisco pitched 7.1 strong innings to earn the win. Ryan Hinson suffered the loss even though he allowed just six hits, one earned run, and no walks with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched. 4
