Tempe Sports Complex and Farrington Stadium Utah Softball Opens 2011 Season at Kajikawa Classic The University of Utah softball team begins its 2011 schedule with five games over four days at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Utes will face Ole Miss at 3:30 p.m., on Thursday then Western Michigan (9 a.m.) and No. 2/1 Arizona (4:30 p.m.) on Friday. Utah will play host No. 13/10 Arizona State Saturday at 7p.m., then conclude the event against No. 23/22 Oklahoma State Sunday at 11:15 a.m. Follow the Utes Live stats can be viewed by following the Gametracker link at utahutes.com. Last Time at the Kajikawa Classic The Utes went at the season-opening Kajikawa Classic in Day one saw Utah spot both No. 8 Stanford and Northridge 5-0 leads. A pair of wild pitches allowed Utah to score two runs on Stanford but it wasn t enough as the Cardinal edged Utah, 5-2. Utah rallied from a 5-0 deficit versus Northridge, tying it just as the game was called because of darkness. Eight errors and nine unearned runs allowed Texas A&M to run away with a 10-3 win in the first game of the second day. A grand slam and 16 K s powered Utah to a 10-6 win over Nevada in the nightcap. A pinch-hit, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game at 4-4 and an RBI single in the 10th plated the game-winning run as Utah upended No. 17 Texas UTAH SOFTBALL Weekly Notes Kajikawa Classic (Feb ) 1825 E. The Utes finished the 2010 campaign overall and were 4-11 in Mountain West Conference play for fifth place in the league standings. Graduated player Kara Foster ended her career second in the MWC s all-time home run record book after hitting 64 career home runs, with the final one coming in the first game of a doubleheader May 13 at Utah Valley. Foster also finished her career second in school history with 165 career RBI and was 10 shy of tying Cyndee Bennett ( ) for the school record. Foster and departed pitcher Ashley Smuda finished their respective careers near the top five in seven different categories in the school s career record books. Foster is listed Utah s school record book in batting average (.329,.12 shy of No. 5), runs (146, nine shy of No. 2), doubles (38, two shy of No. 5) and RBI (165, 10 shy of No. 1). Smuda is fourth in school history in appearances (121, 15 shy of No. 3) and strikeouts (433, 28 shy of No. 4). She was also close to entering the top five in wins (50, three shy of No. 5). Doubling Up Utah set a school single-season record in 2010 by hitting 77 doubles, topping the previous school-best mark of 75 set in 2008 Junior Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif.) posted a team-high 15 doubles. (UC Santa Barbara) Infield Notebook The left side of the infield will remain the same as last season with third baseman Holm and shortstop Hoopiiaina all that much more experienced. When including Clements in left field as well as catcher Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah), this quartet is expected to really have an impact on offense for the Utes as each hitter is rock solid in the batting order. The same cannot be said for right side of the field as several changes were made during the offseason. Former second baseman Tia Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah) is slated to take over the starting spot at first base in her junior season. Sophomore Jackie Sweet (Corona, Calif.), a transfer from UC Santa Barbara has been penciled in as the starter at second base. But the competition for playing will continue well into the season as sophomore Katelyn Elliot (Spanish Fork, Utah), a transfer from Salt Lake Community College, and Taylor Austin (Bountiful, Utah) both have at the position during fall practice. Catcher Notebook Olson returns as the full-time starter behind the plate for the Utes. Olson has started 90 games during her Utah career and led the team last season with 60 hits and finished second on the squad with a.341 batting average. She tied for second in the MWC with 13 runners caught stealing and was sixth in the league with 269 putouts in Chalese Fankhauser (South Jordan, Utah) will serve as the backup catcher during her first season in the program. Alyssa Garcia (Houston, Texas) will redshirt this season after having knee surgery. Alphabetical Roster Ute Position-by-Position Notebooks Outfield Notebook Freshman Tara Glover (Grants Pass, Ore.) is a potential impact player who is slated to start in center field. Glover is a left-handed hitter who will be a true `table-setter at the plate for the Utes and also offers incredible range in the outfield. Sophomore Kayla Ensminger (Mesa, Ariz.), a transfer from Phoenix College, joins the Utah lineup after hitting.400 last season and earning all-region recognition as well as winning the school s Best Infielder award. Freshman Cheyella Myers (Taylorsville, Utah) was arguably the best prospect in the state of Utah coming out of Tooele High School and will serve as a utility player at nearly every position on the field during her first season with the Utes. Sophomore Sandi Bowles (Riverton, Utah) will present another option for Hogue in the Ute outfield. Pitching Notebook Even though Utah has a stable of four pitchers, junior Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) has emerged as the leader of the group. Nielson earned Region 18 honors twice at the College of Southern Idaho and was named the Utah 2A State Player of the Year during her senior season at San Juan High School in Blanding, Utah. Brittany Parker (Murray, Utah) is recovering nicely from shoulder surgery and is work hard to be full strength by the start of the season. Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho) will provide depth for the pitching staff and will also contribute to the team in other aspects. Leading the 2011 team will be senior pitcher and utility player, Brittany Barnhill. Barnhill led the team with a 3.32 ERA and 10 wins last season. She also led the squad with 146 strikeouts which tied for the fifth most in school history and ranked eighth in the SEC. She was also effective at the plate, finishing third on the team with five home runs and 33 RBI. Western Michigan The Broncos welcome back a pair of all-mid-american Conference performers in juniors Gracie Barstad and Meredith Whitney. Both were secondteam selections on a team that went overall last season and in MAC play. In league games, Barstad led WMU in batting average (.359), slugging percentage (.531), on base percentage (.440), hits (23), RBIs (13) and total bases (34). Whitney became only the fifth Bronco pitcher to record 300 or more strikeouts in a career with 318. No. 2/1 Arizona UA went last season and 13-8 against Pac-10 competition. The Wildcats have two players were named to the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Watch LIst, sophomore pitcher Kenzie Fowler and left fielder Brittany Lastrapes. Lastrapes is a three-time All-American with a.422 career batting average with 160 career RBI and 40 career home runs. Fowler became the first freshman to be selected first-team All-America since Caitlin Lowe in She notched 38 wins last year with 371 strikeouts. No. 13/10 Arizona State The Sun Devils finished last season and in Pac-10 action. Katelyn Boyd was named a First Team All-American after leading the country in nearly every offensive category at one point throughout last season. She built a presence in the ASU single-season record books as well. She was listed in batting average ( ninth), home runs (15 - seventh), RBIs (48-12th), hits (73-11th), doubles (12-17th) and stolen bases (27 - fifth). Last summer, Boyd made the USA Softball Junior Team and competed in the World Cup. No. 23/22 Oklahoma State The Cowgirls are coming off a season when they made a Regional appearance and finished fourth in the Big 12 Conference. They finished the 2010 season with a No. 23 ranking in both polls. OSU lost two starting players and an All-Big 12 and All-Region pitcher in Anna Whiddon who won 22 games in However, the Cowgirls will be returning seven position starters, including All-Region third-baseman Mariah Gearhart and fellow senior Alysia Hamilton, an All-Big 12 selection at second base. Coached nine All-Americans and 36 all-region players at SLCC SWAC Coach of the Year Earned All-America honors as a player at Utah, leading the Utes to two World Series appearances. Cody Thomson Assistant Coach Secod Season Coaching Staff Amy Hogue Head Coach Fourth Season Utah, 1994 Amy Hogue leads the Utes in her fourth season as head coach. The fifth coach in program history, Hogue compiled a record in her first three seasons at Utah and sports a after eight seasons as a head coach during her career. Under Hogue s guidance, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA First-Team All-Region award in 2008 and five different Utes have been named to the All-Mountain West Conference teams. Hogue played for the Utes from and earned second team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit.455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series. Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College s softball team from , instantly creating a successful program. She went (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah s graduate assistant coach from From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from Since 1995, Hogue has coached an accelerated travel team. Currently called The Sting, she has guided her club squad to a.725 winning percentage. In the last two seasons, The Sting has racked up 137 wins. Her playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. As a player, she helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins. In addition to the team s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in Hogue s name appears throughout the record book at Utah. In Utah s career record book, she still ranks third in at bats (703) and stolen bases (72), fourth in hits (239), and fifth in both hitting (.340) and runs (125). Her 101 hits in a season was one of the longest-standing marks in the NCAA, and she still holds the NCAA record for at bats in a game (14). The Utah standout briefly played professional softball. After college, she toured with the WPF Storm and was later drafted and signed to play with Durham Dragons. Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in The Sandy, Utah, native is married to Sean Hogue and has three children, Brennan (10), Kai (8) and Tessa (5).
