South Campus Dr. Salt Lake City, UT Phone: utahutes.com Utah Softball Travels to Tempe for Three-game Set at No. 2/2 ASU 26-23, 1-17 Pac-12 Games Utah Softball Travels to Tempe for Three-Game Set at No. 2/2 ASU The University of Utah softball team travels to Tempe, Ariz., for a three-game Pac-12 Conference series against No. 2/2 Arizona State this weekend at Farrington Stadium. The Utes and Sun Devils begin their threegame set on Friday at 7 p.m. MT. The middle game is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. MT, with the finale on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT. Utah is overall this season and 1-17 in Pac-12 play. About Last Week The Utes took three of their five games last week, which included a doubleheader at Weber State and a three-game Pac-12 home series versus No. 23 Oregon State. Weber State Review Utah beat Weber State twice on Wednesday, 10-1 (in five innings) and 8-1, during a non-conference doubleheader at Wildcat Field in Ogden, Utah. The Utes outscored the Wildcats 18-2 and enjoyed an 18-8 edge in hits between the two games. Utah tagged eight extra-base hits on the day, including five doubles and three triples in the two games for a.558 team slugging percentage. Oregon State Review Utah lost two of three home games to No. Fri.-Sun., May 4-6, 2012 No. 2/2 Arizona State (42-5, 14-2 Pac-12) Farrington Stadium Fri., May 4 7 p.m. MT Sat., May 5 7 p.m. MT Sun., May 6 12 p.m. MT 23 Oregon State last weekend. The Utes dropped the opener, 10-2, before picking up its first-ever Pac-12 win on Saturday by an 8-6 margin. Sunday s finale went to Oregon State, 5-4. Last Time Against Arizona State Senior first baseman Tia Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah) connected on a walk-off three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead Utah to a 3-1 win over No. 13/10 Arizona State in the Kajikawa Classic on Feb. 12, 2011 in front of 1,139 fans at Farrington Stadium. After playing to a scoreless tie through seven innings, Utah began the bottom of the eighth inning (as the designated home team) with shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) placed on second base as part of the international tiebreaker rule. Naomi Amu (Oceanside, Calif.) drew a walk after the leadoff at-bat then Palauni blasted her walk-off homer. Having a Grand Time Palauni had four hits, including two home runs, for a team-high eight RBI during five games last week. Palauni led Utah to its first-ever Pac-12 victory over No. 23 Oregon State on Saturday by going 2-for-3 with three runs driven in against the Beavers. She registered a single in the second and a three-run homer in the fourth. On Sunday, Palauni went 1-for-2 on the day and hit a grand slam, which was her second straight game with a homer and her seventh of the season. Palauni now owns 24 career round-trippers during her career. With four RBI on the day against the Beavers, Palauni has driven in 25 runs in 2012 and 87 over her career. This was Palauni s fifth multi-rbi performance of the year. She is third on the team with 15 extra-base hits this season and she has 47 over her career. She is the school-record holder with 110 career walks. Error Free The Ute defense recorded its 18th error-free performance of the season Sunday against Oregon State. Utah owns a 9-9 record this season when not committing a miscue in the field. Hittin Hoops Junior shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina (Riverton, Utah) posted a team-high.636 batting average in five games last week, including two doubles and a single, for three RBI. In the first game of the series, Hoopiiaina went 2-for-3 and recorded four hits in six at-bats with a pair of doubles and four runs scored during the series against the Beavers. Hoopiiaina drove Utah s lone extra-base hit of the contest, a double in the third. Hoopiiaina drew three walks in the second game against OSU and doubled in the fourth. She now leads the team and is tied for eighth in the Pac-12 with 11 two-base hits this season. Hoopiiaina was 3-for-5 with three RBI in both games against Weber State, including a three-run triple in the fourth inning of the first game. Hoopiiaina also scored three runs and was a perfect 2-for-2 on steal attempts. Hoopiiaina is tied with Holm for team-high honors with 19 extra-base hits this year. Hoopiiaina is also tied with Holm for the team lead in multi-hit games this season as Alphabetical Roster Ute Notes both have had 13 such performances this season. Hoopiiaiana ranks second on the squad with 49 hits and currently sports a.320 average at the plate. On the base paths, Hoop is tied for fourth in the Pac-12 and is 17-for-17 in steal attempts this season and 22-of-30 over her career. Hoopiiaina leads the team with 35 runs scored and she ranks second with 49 hits and seven home runs. Defensively, Hoopiiaina is tied for second in the league with 15 double plays turned. Katelyn Cashes In Katelyn Elliott (Spanish Fork, Utah) had six hits, three going for extra bases, to go for five RBI last week. In three games versus OSU, Elliott posted two hits and two RBI against the Beavers. She belted a two-run single in the first game of the OSU series. Elliott went 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs scored and a slugging percentage between the two games at Weber State after hitting three extra-base hits against the Wildcats with two triples and a double. Elliott has 12 extra-base hits this season and 15 over her career to go with 20 runs driven in this year. Utes Aggressive on the Basepaths In five games last week, Utah was 12-of-13 on stolen bases, while holding its opponents to a 6-for-6 output. Hoopiiaina led the way with four steals. Palauni has been on the closing end of the 18 of those double plays, which leads the Pac-12 as well. Double Sweet Utah junior second baseman Jackie Sweet (Corona, Calif.) has helped turn 15 double plays this season, which is puts her in a second-place tie with Hoopiiaina in the latest Pac-12 statistical rankings. Sweet laced an RBI single during Saturday against Oregon State, her 24th RBI of the year. Wednesday at Weber State, Sweet hit a pair of doubles for two RBI and three runs scored. She also went 2-for-2 in steal attempts and she is now 6-for-6 this season. Sweet has 12 doubles during her career as a Ute and has 20 extra-base hits during her Utah career. Nielson Knockouts With 24 strikeouts last week, senior Generra Nielson (Blanding, Utah) upped her career total to 460, with 262 of those coming this season. She has led the Pac-12 throughout the season and is ranked 11h in the country in the NCAA s latest statistical release. Nielson also leads the league lead with 43 appearances this season and 38 starts. She is third in the conference with innings pitched and is tied for fourth with 19 victories. Nielson leads the Ute pitching staff with a 3.15 ERA and opponent batting average Ute Player Notes (.231). She owns a record this season with a career mark during her Utah career. Coming Holm Holm leads the team with a.383 batting average this season. She also boasts a team-best.440 on-base percentage this year and also sports a.638 slugging percentage after touching a total of 90 bases this season. Holm leads Utah with eight home runs and 54 total hits in She also is tied for the team lead with 19 extra-base hits this season and has 66 over her career. Extra-Base Kate Freshman Kate Dickman (Mission Viejo, Calif.) is second on the squad with 10 doubles this year. Dickman also notched her first career triple on Mar. 28 against Utah State and her first career homer against Oregon State last Saturday. Stealin Sandi Junior outfielder Sandi Bowles (Herriman, Utah) is second among Ute base stealers this season. She has 11 steals on 13 attempts this year and has 23 steals over her career. Bowles posted a career-high three steals against Rider on Feb. 26 and had two stolen bases against San Jose State on Feb. 17. Bowles had 10 steals on 12 attempts all of last season. Cody Thomson Assistant Coach Third Season Coaching Staff Amy Hogue Head Coach Fifth Season Utah, 1994 Amy Hogue has been charged with leading the University of Utah softball team into its inaugural season in arguably the best softball league in the nation, the Pac-12 Conference. Currently in her fifth season as Utah s head coach, the sixth coach in program history, Hogue has a (.498) record at Utah and sports a (.602) overall record in her 10th season as a collegiate head coach, which includes six seasons at the NJCAA s Salt Lake Community College. Under Hogue s guidance, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA First-Team All-Region award in 2008 and Tia Palauni was named to the second team in 2011, while and nine different Utes have been name to allconference teams. Hogue played for the Utes from and earned second team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit.455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series. Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College s softball team from , instantly creating a successful program. She went (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 firstteamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All- America standouts. In addition to the players success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in With the Bruins, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah s graduate assistant coach from From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from Hogue also coached an accelerated travel team, called The Sting. She guided her club squad to a.725 winning percentage. In her last two seasons, The Sting racked up 137 wins. Her playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. As a player, she helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins. In addition to the team s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team allregion and second team All-America in She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in Hogue s name appears throughout the record book at Utah. In Utah s career record book, she still ranks third in at bats (703) and stolen bases (72), fourth in hits (239), and fifth in both hitting (.340) and runs (125). Her 101 hits in a season was one of the longeststanding marks in the NCAA, and she still holds the NCAA record for at bats in a game (14). The Utah standout briefly played professional softball. After college, she toured with the WPF Storm and was later drafted and signed to play with Durham Dragons. Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in The Sandy, Utah, native is married to Sean Hogue and has three children, Brennan (11), Kai (9) and Tessa (6).
