Senior C/DP Dani Devlin was named the HL Player of the Week after the Holy City Showdown. Devlin s honor marked a first for any Norse in the Horizon League and the second since transitioning to Division I. NKU was the only team at the Georgia Classic to play a full game against No. 12/10 Georgia. Against No. 17/16 Kentucky, the Norse led through four innings before falling, 2-1. NKU won its first-ever Horizon League series, run ruling Youngstown State in a pair of wins on April 11 and 12. The Norse have won at least one game in every HL series this season, including Leagueleading UIC on April 15. NKU also takes pride in its academics, as softball had a program-record 3.24 GPA in the fall. Gleason announced the signing of four future Norse in the early signing period: Josie Frazier, Faith Howard, Madi Mulder & Hailey Whitmer. 2 NOTES THIS WEEK IN SOFTBALL: Northern Kentucky softball has altered the schedule for the series with Cleveland State in anticipation of inclement weather. Instead of a single game on Friday, April 21, and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22, the series will kick off with a Friday doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. ET and conclude with a noon game on Saturday. Friday s doubleheader will be carried on the ESPN3 platform with Brady Laber on the call. Fans can stream the games live on computers, tablets and smart phones through WatchESPN or the ESPN App. LAST TIME OUT: The Norse were unable to slow EKU in a Tuesday nonconference matchup, as the Colonels plated six runs in the sixth inning to run away with a 13-4 win. Junior third baseman Sydney Ferrante drove in all four of NKU s runs with her 11th double and fifth home run of the campaign, marking the fourth time this season that Ferrante had a multi-rbi game. SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE: The Vikings are still searching for their first win in the Horizon League, having lost all 12 games this season against League opponents. Overall, CSU has gone 4-37 with wins over Canisius, Indiana State and Akron (twice), and enter the weekend riding a nine-game losing streak. In their most recent series with Valparaiso, the Vikings took the Crusaders to extra innings in a 4-3 setback, but overall Valpo out-ran CSU Statistically, Cleveland State ranks in the bottom third of the Horizon League in nearly every category. The Vikings surrender 6.08 earned runs a game while being held to 1.66, and the team is batting.211 while opponents hold a.345 clip. CSU does boast the toughest player to strike out in the League, as Riley Ries has been struck out just six times in 105 atbats. Mackenzie Joecken holds the highest batting average for the team at.298 and has driven in a team-high 19 runs. In the circle, Cleveland State has used eight different pitchers in their rotation, most often relying on Alicia Major and Joecken to get the start. Joecken holds the lowest ERA on the squad through 82.2 innings pitched at 4.74, striking out 44 on the season while allowing 106 hits and 69 runs against. The Vikings claimed the series win last season on April 22-23, with NKU taking a 4-3 win in the second game of the set. CSU used a 5-3 win in the opener and a five-inning 11-0 shutout in the finale. FERRANTE S RED-HOT BAT BREAKS NKU D-I RECORD: Junior third baseman Sydney Ferrante erupted for six RBI in the series finale against Youngstown State, breaking NKU s Division I-era single game record in the process. Ferrante drove in six of NKU s 11 runs in the 11-3, five-inning series clincher over the Penguins while also scoring two runs of her own. DOUBLE TROUBLE: NKU has ramped up its production when it comes to doubles compared to where the team was just a season ago. Forty games into 2016, NKU had recorded 38 doubles on the season. This year, the Norse have clubbed 52 doubles to rank fourth in the Horizon League with 1.27 doubles per game. Junior 3B Sydney Ferrante tops the League with 11 doubles on the season, while senior DP Dani Devlin has recorded 10. 5 kathryn gleason Head Coach Second season Kathryn Gleason, a 19-year coaching veteran with a combined four appearances in the Women s College World Series as a player and as an assistant, was named the fifth head coach of the Northern Kentucky University softball program on Aug. 3, Previously, Gleason had spent three seasons as the head coach at Boston University, where she compiled an overall record of In her first season with the Norse, NKU was able to double its total wins from the 2015 season to take the first step in rising as a program at the Division I level. The Norse went overall and 5-18 in the Horizon League, up from a 6-42 (1-20 A-Sun) mark the year prior. Freshman outfielder Zahrya McFarland was impactful in her rookie season, garnering Horizon League All-Freshman Team honors after leading the team in batting average, doubles, triples and stolen bases, while also ranking second on the team in hits and runs scored. In League play, the Norse recorded wins over Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, Oakland and Youngstown State. In 2014, the Terriers went and made their second NCAA appearance in three seasons. BU struggled early on trying to find its identity with eight newcomers but eventually pulled it all together entering the month of April. The squad won 13 games straight and went a perfect 3-0 in the conference tournament. The momentum carried over to the NCAAs, in which BU overcame a hard-fought 9-6 loss to then-no. 11 Arizona, with a dominating 8-3 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference champion Louisville. The Terriers were the only fourth-seeded squad in the postseason tournament to earn a win and were one out away from adding a second against then-no. 23 LSU. The win over the Cardinals also marked the first NCAA victory by a Patriot League member since Accepting her first head coaching position at BU, Gleason was already quite familiar with the Terriers, having spent a combined six seasons at the University of Massachusetts, including the last two as associate head coach. Working primarily with the Minutewomen s infielders, she helped lead the team to the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship and a overall record after finishing in Before rejoining UMass in 2010, she coached for six years at Michigan State, serving the last five years as associate head coach. She primarily worked with the infield, coaching six All-Big Ten and four All-Region honorees, along with guiding the Spartans to four straight Big Ten Tournament berths. She served as the program s recruiting coordinator and assistant director of all camps and clinics. Gleason was also the Spartans liaison for the Friends of Jaclyn program. Joining the Spartans staff in June of 2004, Gleason moved to State following a three-year stint as an assistant coach at Purdue University ( ) While working with the Boilermakers, Gleason assisted with team academics, equipment, promotions, tournaments, facilities, recruiting and strength & conditioning. On game days, she supervised and directed the outfield and assisted with the offense. Additionally, she worked with Purdue s softball camps and clinics. During her first stint at UMass, from , Gleason helped lead the Minutewomen to four Atlantic 10 regular season conference titles and four A-10 Championships. They made four appearances in the NCAAs, including winning the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Regional Championships, as well as advancing to the Women s College World Series both years. During that time, she also coached a 2000 United States Olympic Gold Medalist, as well as a 2004 Canadian Olympian. Gleason earned her bachelor s degree in sport management and communications from the University of Michigan in She was a member of the 1993, `95 and `96 Big Ten regular season championship teams, the `95 and `96 Big Ten Tournament Championship teams, and played in the `95 and `96 Women s College World Series while serving as co-captain of the `96 team. Gleason earned her master s degree in sport management from UMass in She is heavily involved with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), recently serving as the third vice president, after previously serving as the first vice president, the second vice president and assistant coach representative for the association. A native of Country Club Hills, Illinois, Gleason was inducted into the Marian Catholic High School Hall of Fame as Athlete of the Year in the 2002 induction class. Madura s main role will be assisting with the offense and the infielders. The Norse saw improvement in their first season under a new coaching staff, doubling their wins from the 2015 season and picking up five victories in the Horizon League. In 2012 and 2013, she led the Colts to Conference and Region XV titles. On three occasions, including in 2015, she was named the NJCAA Region XV Coach of the Year as well. A 2009 graduate of Penn State, Madura spent four seasons playing for the Nittany Lions. While at Penn State, the third baseman broke the team s singlegame records for RBI and home runs. She will work primarily with the pitchers as an assistant coach on Kathryn Gleason s staff. Gronewold is no stranger to Horizon League competition, as she previously served on the UIC staff in the same capacity. During her time there, the Flames won the Horizon League regular season for the 15th time in program history and also posted the most conference wins in team history with an 18-5 record. Gronewold also oversaw individual success as pitcher Elaine Heflin was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region Second Team honoree. During her collegiate career, Gronewold was a four-year starter at Drake from , where she helped the Bulldogs amass 111 wins. She was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team twice and had a career record of with a 3.29 ERA in innings pitched. She wrote her name into Bulldog laurels on multiple occasions, ranking first in games started (121), third in pitching appearances (134), eighth in strikeouts (333) and ninth in wins (39). A native of Carlisle, Iowa, Gronewold earned her degree in marketing with a minor in advertising from Drake in She is pursuing a master s in school counseling at NKU.
