Home games in BOLD CAPS, played at Earl Lorden Field DOWN FLYERS THIS WEEKEND ON TAP: The University of Massachusetts baseball team (8-7, 1-2 Atlantic 10) heads to the University of Dayton (12-16, 2-4 Atlantic 10) this weekend for a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series. The Minutemen, who sport a blistering.308 team batting average, second in the A-10, enter the weekend having defeated Holy Cross, 8-5, on Tuesday. The Dayton Flyers glide into the weekend with a (2-4 Atlantic 10) record including three straight losses in their last three games. SERIES HISTOR Y: Saturday s game is scheduled to be just the 11th meeting between UMass and Dayton. A former member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the Great Midwest Conference, the Flyers joined the Atlantic 10 for the campaign. The all-time series is tied 5-5, and began in SCOUTING THE FLYERS: Dayton soared out to a quick start winning three if its first five contests, before heading into a tailspin by losing its next six consecutive. Since Mar. 12 though, UD has gone 9-8 since including taking two of three at A-10 foe Saint Joseph s last weekend. Dayton head coach Tony Vittorio has been piloting the Flyers program for the past four years. He entered the year with a record over 11 years, including a mark at UD. Last season Dayton went overall including a 4-20 mark in conference play. Vittorio is a 1988 graduate of Hanover. The Flyers are led offensively by senior outfielder Patrick Flynn who leads the team with a.415 batting average, 44 hits, 26 RBI, 18 walks and four home runs. Junior Brandon Godzik enters the weekend with a.373 batting average including 25 RBI and nine doubles. On the mound, junior lefty Jerr y Blevins (4-1, 4.00 ERA) leads the team with 36.0 innings pitched and 32 strikeouts. Sophomore righty Craig Stammen (0-3, 5.56 ERA) has totaled 26 strikeouts over 34.0 innings pitched, while junior righty Drew Chesebr o (1-2, 6.23 ERA) has totaled 20 strikeouts over 34.2 innings pitched. Chesebro has also allowed a team-high 50 hits and 24 earned runs. STONE GETS No. 500: Already the all-time winningest coach in UMass Baseball histor y, Mike Stone picked up career win No. 500 with a 6-5 decision at Rider on March 7, Just the second coach in UMass Athletics history to accomplish the feat, Stone also ranks as the winningest active Division I head coach in New England. ON THE BUMP: Senior righty Eric Chown (Fall River, Mass.) is expected to start Saturday s opener for the Minutemen. In his last outing against Holy Cross, Chown started the game, but only went two innings as UMass used the game to get much-needed work for its starters. The Bay State native scattered three hits (all singles) while striking out two and allowing no runs. Earlier this year he notched his second complete game of the year, (eighth of his career) but suffered the loss in a 4-1 decision at George Washington on Mar. 27. He went six innings allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out seven and allowing just one walk.
2 Atlantic 10 Standings (thru 4/8) East Division A-10 Pct. Overall Temple Rhode Island Saint Bonaventure Fordham Massachusetts Saint Joseph's West Division A-10 Pct. Overall Richmond George Washington Duquesne Xavier Dayton La Salle Against Iowa on Mar. 17, Chown went 10.0 innings to earn a complete game victory in a 4-2 decision at the IMG Baseball Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The wire-to-wire win marked his first complete game of the year. He limited the Hawkeyes to just one earned run and one walk, while striking out three and retiring 12 of the last 14 batters he faced. That performance earned him Atlantic 10 and ECAC Pitcher of the Week honors. On the year, Chown (2-2, 4.61 ERA) has totaled 18 strikeouts in 27.1 innings pitched. TRIPLE DIME, ANYTIME: Wearing No. 30 on the hill, senior starting pitcher Eric Chown has been at the front end of a powerful Minuteman pitching staff for the past couple of seasons. Already having logged a team-high 27.1 innings this year, including a complete game 10-inning victory over Iowa on Mar. 17, the right hander was a workhorse last season totaling a team-high 72.0 innings pitched including six complete games. As a sophomore in 2002 he ranked second on the squad with 68.2 innings to his credit. Beginning the year with more than 180 collegiate innings under his belt, the Durfee High School product could end his UMass career among the top five Minutemen pitchers in innings pitched all-time (he began the year seventh on the all-time list for pitching appearances with 47). Drafted by the Atlanta Braves following the 2003 campaign (38th round, 1147th overall), Chown opted to return to Amherst for his senior season. A second-team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2003, he was also a member of the All-Tournament squad. TORA, TORA, TORA: S o p h o m o re righty Matt T o rr a (Pittsfield, Mass.) has been shooting down opposing hitters this year totaling 34 strikeouts in just 25.1 innings. On Mar. 27 at George Washington, Torra scattered eights hits over 6.1 innings recording nine strikeouts, allowing one run and one walk. For his performance, he was named the Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week. In his first start of the season on Mar. 7 at Rider, Torra fanned a career-high 12 batters over six innings allowing just four hits and two runs. On the year, along with his strikeout capability, Torra (3-1, 3.91 ERA) has issued six walks and six extra-base hits. REYNOLDS WRAP: Senior captain Matt Reynolds ( S o u t h Boston, Mass.) has appeared in every game for the Minutemen this year, toting a team-leading three home runs, along with 17 RBI and a.308 batting average. This season he has made a smooth transition across the diamond to first base. Having played in 27 games at the hot corner in 2003, the transfer from Maine has been almost flawless making just one error over the first 14 games of the season. In UMass 15-3 dismantling of Wright State on March 18, Reynolds clubbed a pair of home runs, scored three runs and three RBIs. The home runs were his second and third of the season as he also knocked one out in the second game against Rider on March 7. DIRECT FROM THE NEEDHAM LINE: Senior A d a m Stojanowski (West Roxbur y, Mass.) led the team with a 10-game hitting streak (Mar. 7 - Mar. 30) having recorded a hit in each of the first 10 games he played. Holding a team-leading.395 batting average during the stretch, the versatile infielder is arguably one of the best defensive infielders in the Atlantic 10 Conference. RAGIN CAJUN: While it could not be compared to the first win of former major leaguer Bobo Holloman, it was good enough to e a rn him his first official victory in a Minuteman uniform. Righthanded starter Devin Barnett (New Orleans, La.) hurled seven solid innings allowing just six hits and two runs while striking out five at Sacred Heart on March 30. The Bayou State native picked up his first collegiate victory and stranded eight Pioneers on the base paths. Holloman holds the distinction (along with Charlie Jones and Ted Breitenstein) of tossing a no-hitter in his first major league start. A member of the now-defunct Saint Louis Browns (who became the Baltimore Orioles following the 1953 campaign), Holloman flamed out by the end of 1953 never pitching another complete game in his major league career. In Barnett s next outing a week later against Holy Cross on Apr. 6, the rookie earned his first collegiate save. Entering the game with UMass ahead 8-5, and the bases loaded with two outs, the 6-0, 175-pound hurler fired a trio of strikes earning a strikeout to end the game. SAVE THE DATE: Prior to the Atlantic 10 Conference series against the Temple Owls on Saturday, May 8, the University of Massachusetts Department of Athletics will recognize the 1954 UMass Baseball team, celebrating the 50th anniversary of UMass first appearance in the College World Series. Under the direction of legendary head coach Earl Lorden, the team went 15-7 that season and won the New England Championship. Advancing to Omaha, Neb., the team won one game before bowing to eventual national champion Missouri, 8-1, on June 12, In an effort to get as many members of that team reunited on May 8, 2004, anyone who has any contact info regarding members of the squad is asked to contact Tamra Geryk in Athletic Marketing at (413) Be sure to come out for what should certainly be a memorable day in UMass Baseball history.
3 RESCHEDULED GAMES: Delays this season have accounted for the latest UMass baseball home-opener in over ten years. The Minutemen opened the 1993 home campaign on April 6 with a 10-1 victory over Amherst College. The Connecticut game in Storrs, Conn., postponed from March 23rd has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m. The teams will now square off in back-to-back days as the Minutemen will open the home-andhome series at Lorden Field on April 13th at 3:00 p.m. The threegame Atlantic 10 Conference series against Richmond postponed from April 3rd and 4th, will be made up on May 21 and 22, here in Amherst. PRESEASON POLL: In the annual Atlantic 10 preseason coaches poll, UMass was picked to finished first in the Atlantic 10 East Division. Coming off a (14-7) record, the 2003 Minutemen advanced to the conference tournament title game before bowing to NCAA Tournament participant, 18th-ranked Richmond. THE CAPT A I N S : Senior second baseman Sean Sar n o (Stoneham, Mass.), senior shortstop Mike Athas ( H o l y o k e, Mass.) and senior first baseman Matt Reynolds (South Boston, Mass.) will serve as the captains for the 2004 Minutemen. NOTABLE NOTABLES: As has been the norm for UMass Baseball over the years, the Minutemen get on the scoreboard in the first inning, 20 of of UMass 100 runs (20.0 percent) have scored in the first frame At the other end, the next two highest run-producing innings for UMass, are the eighth and ninth where the Maroon & White have crossed the plate 19 and 11 times respectively Senior shortstop Mike Athas (Holyoke, Mass.) leads the team lead with six multi-hit games, while junior outfielder Derrick D u re p o ( Wa r e, Mass.), sophomore catcher Frank Curr e r i ( Weymouth, Mass,), Matt Reynolds and Jason T w o m l e y (Fitchburg, Mass.) have each totaled five multi-hit contests Curreri also leads the squad with five multi-rbi games Sarno is a perfect 19-for-19 on the basepaths during his collegiate career, having started the year 18-for-18, he has added a 1-for-1 figure to that total in 2004.
