A 6-run fifth inning chased Tyler Beede, who failed to reach the fifth for the first time in 15 starts this season. The real story was first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who hit a pair of 3-run home runs and drove in six to even the series at a game apiece with a 9-7 win. ABOUT LAST NIGHT : + For the second straight night, the Flying Squirrels struck in the first inning, taking a lead three batters in against Ricardo Pinto. Steven Duggar led off with a double, and C.J. Hinojosa added one of his own to keep the San Jose surge going strong. Tyler Beede kept the league s most dangerous offense off the board in the first four innings, allowing just a walk and a pair of singles after retiring the first seven batters he faced. Richmond got a leadoff single from Ryder Jones and a walk to Steve Lerud in the second, but Pinto kept it 1-0 by retiring the next three hitters. In the third, Christian Arroyo bounced a double down the left field line and Chris Shaw brought him home with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Lerud drew his second walk and Darren Ford followed with a free pass, allowing Beede to single through the infield to load the bases with one out in the fourth. Duggar s fielder s choice groundout tacked on a run to make it 3-0, and an error from Pinto on the ensuing mad dash brought Ford around from second for a 4-0 advantage. The game flipped in the top of the fifth when Beede put the first two Phils on with a walk and a hit by pitch. All-Star catcher Jorge Alfaro drew a walk with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 4-1, and Dylan Cozens delivered his first hit of the series with a two-run single to make it 4-3. Hoskins then got a 3-2 pitch from Beede and sent it over the wall in left center for his 23rd home run and a 6-4 Reading lead. With Beede (5-4) done after 4.2 innings with all six runs coming in unearned, Prestom Claiborne covered the next 1.1 innings. The Squirrels tied the score with a pair of runs in the sixth thanks to an error from Hoskins at first base and a pinch-hit RBI single from Brandon Bednar. However, Hoskins came up again with two runners aboard in the 7th and yanked the first pitch of the outing from Tyler Mizenko for his second 3-run homer to break the tie and put the Phils back in front 9-6.
