UP NEXT Indiana Softball opens Big Ten action this weekend as the Hoosiers play host to No. 18 Ohio State for a three-game set. Due to the weather forecast, the teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 2 p.m. and will wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. There will be no game Saturday. Admission to all home games is free of charge. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus via BTN2Go. SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES The 19-4 Buckeyes have had two of their losses come against top-five teams in No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Oklahoma. Ohio State is hitting.265 as a team, paced by Lilli Piper, who is batting.452 with 38 hits, 29 runs, 33 RBI, 12 home runs and 9 doubles. Piper was picked as the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday after going.565 at the plate with 13 hits, 9 RBI, 8 runs and 3 homers in seven games. Meanwhile, Piper currently ranks fourth nationally in homers, which leads the Big Ten. In the circle, Morgan Ray (1.49 ERA, 11-3, 89.1 IP) and Shelby McCombs (2.68 ERA, 8-1, 65.1 IP) split most of the workload. Indiana leads the all-time series against Ohio State, Last year, Ohio State took two out of three contests in Columbus. Indiana picked up a 3-1 win in the second game against thenranked No. 25 Ohio State, which marked the first win against a ranked opponent for IU since Last time the Buckeyes came to Bloomington, the Hoosiers took two out of three games in THIS WEEK S PROMOS Friday s doubleheader will feature an Indiana popsocket giveaway. Sunday s game is Lil Sis Day where all members of the Lil Sis program are invited to Andy Mohr Field. If you are involved in the program, please be at the stadium by 11:15 a.m. for the pre-game activity. LAST TIME OUT Due to the weather, the Hoosiers postponed Tuesday s contest against Louisville. IU opened home play over the weekend in the annual Hoosier Classic. Indiana went 3-2 in the tournament, defeating UIC twice and splitting with Green Bay. The Hoosiers dropped a single game meeting with Northwestern. JENKINS LEADS THE WAY Sophomore Gabbi Jenkins had a huge weekend in the Hoosier Classic, hitting a teamleading with 9 hits, 5 runs, 3 RBI, 3 walks and 4 stolen bases in five games. -> Jenkins recorded an on-base percentage of.632 with a.563 slugging percentage. She had two games with three hits or more and reached base successfully in every contest. -> In Indiana s 8-4 win against UIC Sunday, Jenkins went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three runs and three stolen bases. -> Jenkins is leading the Hoosiers with a.367 average, 33 hits and 14 runs. WESTMORELAND S BIG WEEKEND Freshman Maddie Westmoreland also had a big weekend, batting.375 with 6 hits and 6 RBI, including a three-run homer against UIC Sunday. Westmoreland has raised her batting average significantly in the last three weeks: -> After batting.182 with four hits and four RBI in the first nine games of the season, she has hit.400 with 20 hits and 12 RBI in the 19 games since then. In addition, she has collected three homers over the span of the last 10 games. -> For the season, she now sits second on the team with a.333 average. HOOSIER QUICK HITS Indiana s 5-3 win against UIC on Friday marked head coach Shonda Stanton s first career victory at Andy Mohr Field.

Senior Rachel O Malley hit.462 in the Hoosier Classic, collecting six hits - including three doubles - and two runs. O Malley also drew two walks and brought in five runs while recording an impressive.923 slugging percentage. Indiana stole 16 bases over the weekend and the Hoosiers now have 46 stolen bases on the year, the second-most in the Big Ten. Jenkins has 13 stolen bags, which is the second-most in the conference, while Blitz has 11. Junior Tara Trainer s 86 strikeouts this season are tied for third-most in the Big Ten. The Lebanon, Ohio native has 442 strikeouts in her career, the sixth-most in IU program history: Career Rankings: 1. BLITZ NAMED SENIOR CLASS AWARD CANDIDATE Last Thursday, Rebecca Blitz was named one of 30 candidates nationwide for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. Blitz, a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten and NFCA All-Region pick, led the Hoosiers in batting average and hits during her sophomore and junior campaigns. Blitz sits in the top 10 in nearly every offensive category in Indiana history as her.332 career batting average ranking sixth all-time, her 201 hits is sixth all-time and 113 runs scored is fifth. In addition, her 71 stolen bases is tied for third in the IU record book. The Mountain Brook, Ala. native has played in all 192 games of her career, with 190 starts in centerfield. Off the field, Blitz is a two-time Academic All- Big Ten pick and will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science in Business. She plans to get her Master of Science in Information Systems at Indiana. She s been involved in numerous organizations, including Hoosier Heroes peer mentoring and the Athletic Director s Council on Diversity and Inclusivity. BTN ANNOUNCES BROADCAST SCHEDULE Big Ten Network announced its 2018 softball broadcast schedule last week, which includes Indiana s April 25 DH at Purdue. Every home game will be broadcast on BTN Plus via BTN2Go. The Hoosiers have 55 games on tap in 2018, including 21 to be played at Andy Mohr Field. This year, Indiana will play 16 games against teams who reached the NCAA Tournament last season and 10 against teams ranked or receiving votes in this week s USA Today/ NFCA Poll. Other home Big Ten battles for Indiana includes Ohio State, Nebraska, Penn State and Michigan. IU will travel to Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue and Rutgers. Nonconference games remaining include Western Kentucky, Butler and Louisville. The 2018 Big Ten Tournament will be hosted by Wisconsin in Madison from May NEW FACES AT THE HELM Head Coach Shonda Stanton was tapped to lead the Hoosiers after 18 years at Marshall. Stanton brought assistants Kendall Fearn and Chanda Bell to join her Hoosier staff. The 2017 NFCA Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year spent four years together at Marshall, posting a winning percentage of.616, the second-best four-year run in program history. Another former member of the Herd now donning Cream and Crimson is Morgan Zerkle, who is serving as a graduate assistant manager along with Indiana Softball alum Michelle Huber. Zerkle graduated from Marshall in 2017 and was an NFCA All-American and CoSIDA Academic All-American in her senior season. NEW IN 2018 Annika Baez A 2017 Premier Girls Fastpitch All-American... finished her career at Ironwood Ridge High School with a.498 average and 159 hits... named 2017 Team MVP, First Team All-Southern Arizona and Second Team All- State after batting.528 with 57 hits, 51 RBI, 18 doubles and six home runs during her senior season... awarded 2016 All-Southern Arizona First Team accolades after posting a.455 average with 41 RBI, 11 doubles, eight homers and an on-base percentage of earned Team MVP and Division II All-State Honorable Mention accolades in 2016 to lead Ironwood Ridge to a 33-4 record and a Division II State Championship, its second in three years... played travelball for AZ Cats where she guided the team to three straight PGF Premier Berth victories, a 2016 firstplace finish in TCS Fireworks, a 2017 Dorado Classic championship, as well as three OnDeck National Elite Camp victories... previously played travelball with fellow Hoosier Lambert Karly Combs Named a 2017 Premier Girls Fastpitch All- American... hit.411 with a.516 on-base percentage and.979 fielding percentage during her senior season... in 2017, was also named Third Team All-State, All-MIC Conference, Hamilton County All-Softball Team, The Times All-County and Am Fam All- County... led Carmel to a MIC Conference runner-up finish... was the 2016 Indiana State 4A middle infielder fielding percentage leader

Makayla Ferrari A three-time All-State and four-time All- Conference selection... batted.520 with a.547 on-base percentage, 12 stolen bases and six homers during her senior campaign... named 2017 Team MVP, All-Area, All-District and to the North vs. South All-Star Game... in her junior season, she reached base safely in 27 of 28 games and hit.483 with a.900 slugging percentage... knocked 42 base hits, including 17 doubles, and was a perfect 7-for-7 in swiping bags...also tied the school record with 30 RBI in was named her team s MVP three times and recorded the highest batting average on the team in three different seasons... played in the North vs. South All- Star Game as a freshman... played travelball for Indiana Dreams, where she won the 2016 PGF Tournament in Crown Point, was runner-up in the Triple Crown Nationals and took a trip to the PGF Nationals in Huntington Beach, Calif. HEAD COACH PLAYING EXPERIENCE > UNC-GREENSBORO INFIELDER > WOMEN S ASA FASTPITCH SUMMERBALL INFIELDER Head coach Shonda Stanton enters her first season at the helm of Indiana Softball in 2018 after being named the program s ninth head coach on June 10, Stanton came to the Hoosiers after 18 seasons at Marshall, where she was the winningest coach in program history with 560 victories. MARSHALL 2017 Conference USA Coaching Staff of the Year Career record: (18 seasons) Two NCAA Tournament Appearances During her tenure, Stanton guided the Thundering Herd to two NCAA Tournament appearances, five conference championship games and led the team to two Mid-American Conference championships (2003 and 2005), a Conference USA regular season championship (2017) and Conference USA Tournament title (2013). In addition, the Thundering Herd posted 12 seasons with 30 or more wins during Stanton s time in Huntington. Under Stanton s guidance, Marshall was known for its speed as her teams ranked in the top 10 in stolen bases more than any other program since Stanton took over in 2000, including every year from For the third time since 2000, the Thundering Herd led the nation in stolen bases in 2017 with 162 on the year. Marshall saw two win the Golden Shoe Award for leading the nation in stolen bases under Stanton - current Indiana graduate student manager Morgan Zerkle in 2015 and Elicia D Orazio in Six finished their Marshall careers with 100 or more stolen bases under Stanton, led by Zerkle s program record-setting 160 swiped bags. This past season, Stanton guided Marshall s return to the NCAA Tournament as the Thundering Herd earned an at-large bid and posted a program-record mark. During the season, Marshall posted a SHONDA STANTON Head Coach 1st Year as Indiana Head Coach 20th Year as Collegiate Head Coach 17-game winning streak in 2017 and a 20-4 conference record leading to Stanton and her staff of Kendall Fearn and Chanda Bell being picked as the Conference USA Coaching Staff of the Year. In addition, Marshall saw Zerkle win C-USA Player of the Year honors and Jordan Dixon win C-USA Pitcher of the Year. Both Zerkle and Dixon also earned NFCA All-American accolades. In addition to the team s impressive base-stealing numbers, the team finished with a batting average of.300 or better for the third straight season as Marshall climbed as high as No. 23 in the national rankings. Stanton recorded her 500th career win on March 23, 2016 in an 8-3 victory against UTEP. In 2013, Marshall s Conference USA Tournament title led to the Herd s first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament in Lexington, Ky. Marshall picked up its first NCAA tournament win, 3-1, over Notre Dame on May 18. Under Stanton s tutelage, Marshall saw 76 all-conference selections, nine conference Player, Pitcher or Freshman of the Year accolades, 34 NFCA All-Region picks and a four-time All-American in Rachel Folden. Zerkle was named to the Top 50 Watch List for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and played for the USA Softball National Team this past summer. In addition, Zerkle was the seventh player under Stanton s guidance to reach the National Pro Fastpitch League. Off the field, Marshall posted a team GPA of 3.0 in every semester of Stanton s career and had 118 named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. OTHER COLLEGIATE COACHING EXPERIENCE Prior to joining Marshall, Stanton served as the head coach at IUPUI in , where she led the Jaguars to a mark in their first season as a Division I team. After graduating college, Stanton served as a graduate assistant for Ashland University, where she received her Master s of Education in Sports Science. During her time, the softball program set a school record for victories in a season (53), won a second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title and earned a second straight NCAA Division II playoff berth. In the season, the Eagles finished 53-6, won the conference championship and hosted its regional tournament. That season, the entire coaching staff was selected as the coaching staff of the year in the GLIAC. Additionally, Akron s second baseman, Veronica Wootsen snagged the 2007 Nokona Gold Glove Offensive Player of the Year Award. PLAYING CAREER Stanton (maiden name Spagnola) was a four-year starter at UNC Greensboro and led the team to back-to-back Big South Conference championships. In addition, Stanton scored 66 runs during her senior campaign in 1995, good for eighth in the nation and most all-time in a single season at UNCG. She sits third in UNCG history in career runs scored (143) and ninth in stolen bases (41). Off the field, Stanton earned her Bachelor of Arts in History at UNCG and helped start the Spartan Heroes program at UNCG, which worked to increase community service initiatives. Stanton played in the Women s ASA Fastpitch Summerball for the Chet Smith Lady All-Stars in Columbus, Ohio, and the Buckeye Slammers in Akron, Ohio, from Both teams were Class A National Qualifiers and the Slammers captured the Class B National Championship in PERSONAL In October of 2016, Stanton was inducted into the North Olmstead High School Hall of Fame where she was a three-sport athlete and an 11-time letter award winner. A member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All- America Committee, Stanton has also served on the NFCA Head Coaches Council and was a voter in the NFCA Top-25. Stanton, who was named the Judy Sweet Award winner as a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy, served on the Coaches Council for the Alliance of Women Coaches. As an NFCA featured speaker and clinician, Stanton shot an instructional video series with Championship Productions. Stanton and husband Joe have been married for 19 years and reside in Bloomington with their two daughters, Shayla (14), Gianna (11) and son, Josiah (6).
