Watson Stadium North Florida Ospreys (0-0) vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (0-0) Friday, Feb. 9 4 p.m. TOURNAMENT INFORMATION The University of North Florida baseball team will head to Conway, S.C. to take part in the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament hosted Coastal Carolina. The Ospreys will kick off the tourney by taking on CCU at 4 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, UNF will try to bring down the ninth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers at 3:30 p.m. The Ospreys wrap up the weekend on Sunday by taking on 2006 Southern Conference Champion Elon at 3:30 p.m OSPREY OUTLOOK In his 20th season at North Florida, head coach Dusty Rhodes has seen it all. He has taken the Ospreys from NAIA to Division II and now to Division I, all with road stops at success along the way. He has led UNF to five World Series appearances (two NAIA, three Division II), with the most recent coming in 2005, the last year of Division II for the Ospreys. Now at the highest level of collegiate baseball, he is finding success right away, leading UNF to a second-place finish in the Atlantic Sun in 2006, North Florida s first year of Division I competition. The Ospreys return five position player starters and 10 pitchers from last year s team. The pitching staff is led by LHP Brad Johnson, who went 9-1 with a 2.65 ERA last season en route to being named first-team all-conference. UNF also returns junior second baseman Chad Knight and junior designated hitter Travis Martin, who were each selected to the preseason all-conference team. T.J. The Chanticleers, out of the Big South Conference, finished with a record and was knocked out in the loser s bracket of the Big South Tournament in The Chanticleers start LHP Andy DeLaGarza on Friday. DeLaGarza posted a 3-6 record in 2006 with a 4.29 ERA, 62 strikeouts, and 92.1 innings pitched. In the bullpen, CCU returns workhorse senior RHP John Mariotti, who went 5-2 with three saves and a 5.19 ERA in 50.1 innings last season. The Chanticleers return their top contact hittter from last season, senior infielder Adam Vrable. Vrable hit.324 with 61 hits, seven doubles, and 25 RBI. On the power side, junior infielder Matt Sutton returns after his.274 average and team-leading 12 homeruns, 38 RBI and 38 runs scored from UNF is all-time against all teams from South Carolina and are 2-0 against Division I squads. The two wins are against The Citadel and Charleston Southern. The Ospreys are also 5-0 against Presbyterian College, is reclassifying to Division I. UNF is 20-0 all-time against USC Upstate, who will join the Atlantic Sun next year from Division II. SCOUTING VIRGINIA Virginia comes into the tournament ranked as high as No. 9. The Cavaliers are coming a record last season and earned the No. 1 seed in the Charlottesville NCAA Regional. UVa returns eight position starters and eight pitchers from last year s squad. UNF last faced off against the Cavaliers in 1989, just the second year of the North Florida baseball program s existence. The team s split a two-game series, with UNF winning the first game, 8-2, and UVa winning the second contest UVa will send sophomore starting RHP Jacob Thompson to the hill on Saturday. Thompson finished second on the team in wins last season as a true freshman, as he notched a 10-4 record. He threw a team-high innings and recorded a 2.60 ERA with 77 strikeouts. The Cavaliers are led at the plate by senior outfielder Brandon Marsh, who hit a team-best.380 with 79 hits, 30 RBI and a.500 slugging percentage. His performance earned him second-team All-ACC honors. UNF is 1-2 all-time against teams from Virginia. SCOUTING ELON The Phoenix won a school-record 45 games last season and scored its first-ever Southern Conference title. Elon also made an appearance in the NCAA Regional for the the second time in school history. Elon will be starting senior RHP Zach Booker, who transferred from UNC Wilmington. Booker went 6-0 with a 6.23 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 57 innings pitched last season at UNCW. The Phoenix will return some heavy bats in their lineup, led by senior infielder Robert Rodebaugh, who led the team with a.340 batting average last season. He also notched 69 hits, knocked in 60 runs and smashed out 11 home runs. Rodebaugh is joined by senior first baseman Chris Vasami, who led the team with 14 round-trippers and drove in 57 runs. He also hit.322. UNF is 41-8 all-time against teams from the state of North Carolina. GSU, out of the Southern Conference, finished last season and was knocked out in the second round of the SoCon Tournament. The Eagles will face off against Jacksonville before heading to Harmon Stadium. UNF RECEIVES VOTES IN PRESEASON POLL The Ospreys received votes in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll, putting them at No. 66. It is the first time in Division I history UNF has received such recognition in voting. The Ospreys finished 94th in the Baseball RPI last season. OSPREYS PICKED TO FINISH 4TH IN A-SUN UNF was chosen to finish fourth in the Atlantic Sun preseason coaches poll. Last season s regular season champion Jacksonville tied with last season s tournament champion Stetson at the top, followed by Mercer in third. UNF finished last season in second place, but couldn t compete in the conference tournament due to the Divison I transition.
