The Padres & Yankees Triple-A affiliates have not played against each other since 1978 when the Yankees were affiliated with Tacoma & the Padres Triple-A team was the Hawaii Islanders ( ). Both teams were part of the Pacific Coast League West Division that season. El Paso will look to continue the Pacific Coast League's success in the current format of the Triple-A National Championship. The PCL has won 4 consecutive meetings against the Governors' Cup Champions & are 7-3 since the game has been played annually since Chihuahuas reliever Buddy Baumann appeared in the 2014 National Championship Game for Omaha against Pawtucket for the Storm Chasers 2nd-consecutive National Championship. The El Paso Chihuahuas captured their first Pacific Coast League Championship on Saturday after a thrilling 11-inning victory in Oklahoma City. El Paso's league championship is the first for an El Paso baseball franchise since the El Paso Diablos (Double-A Brewers) won their 5th Texas League title in The Chihuahuas are the first Padres Triple-A affiliate to win a league crown since the Las Vegas Stars won the PCL Championship in El Paso's series-deciding win in extra innings was the first time a PCL Championship was clinched in extra innings since The Tacoma Rainiers needed 11 innings to finish a 3-game sweep of the Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park for the 2010 PCL Championship. The Chihuahuas offense was a juggernaut all season long. They led Minor League Baseball in batting average & hits while leading Triple-A in home runs while scoring the 2nd-most runs at the Triple-A level. El Paso also had the 2nd-fewest walks & stolen bases among all 30 Triple-A teams. Defensively, El Paso's 54 outfield assists was the most by any team in Triple-A. The El Paso pitching staff had the highest earned-run average (4.99) among the 4 teams that made the PCL Playoffs. However, they pitched well when it mattered most by compiling an ERA of 2.96 over 8 playoff games while allowing just 2 home runs which ended up being the best marks in the PCL. The Chihuahuas "Core Four" re-wrote El Paso's Triple-A record book in PCL MVP Hunter Renfroe led Triple-A in HRs (30) & extra-base hits (69) while coming in the top 4 in RBI, hits, & runs. Carlos Asuaje led Triple-A in both hits & runs in his PCL Rookie of the Year campaign. Asuaje trailed only Manuel Margot in triples (12) while Margot also led Triple-A in outfield assists (18). Austin Hedges hit 21 HR & 82 RBI in just 82 games this season which led all Triple-A catchers. Hedges & Renfroe are the first Chihuahuas teammates to hit 20 HR in the same season. All of their totals are new team records. Four players went from El Paso to make their Major League debut during the 2016 season, all of them for appearing for the San Diego Padres. Tayron Guerrero, Ryan Schimpf, Buddy Baumann, & Patrick Kivlehan ran the total up to 20 former Chihuahuas players to appear in the Big Leagues since the franchise's inaugural season in
