The series will be played at Merrimack College due to winter weather. For a second-straight week, the Hoos midweek game was cancelled due to inclement weather. Virginia dropped the series to Syracuse last weekend. Two of the three games went into extra innings. At.276 as a team, the Cavaliers batting average is just two points shy of being the highest since Lacy Smith s walk-off home run in the 11th inning on Saturday was the first walkoff win for the Cavaliers this season. The back-to-back extra-inning games were a first since 2013 for the Hoos. Virginia has played three-consecutive extra-inning games only once before. HOOS vs. EAGLES Virginia and Boston College are meeting for the 31st time in the series opener on Friday. Boston College holds a edge in the series. The Cavaliers have fared better on the road in the series, with a 7-8 mark in Boston. This will be the first time the two have met at a non-campus location. Virginia has won two of the last three series played in Boston. All 31 meetings in the series have come in the regular season. 3 AD ON FIRE Senior Allison Davis is batting.458 in ACC play on the season, tied for the team best alongside Hayley Busby. Earlier this season, Davis became the first UVA player to ever homer in five consecutive games. The five game streak ties Davis for ninth in NCAA history. She is one of just 20 players to homer in five consecutive games. The outfielder ranks among the ACC leaders in nearly every category. She sits seventh in the nation in hits and 10th in the country in home runs. In 18 games since adding a chnstrap to her helmet, Hayley Busby is hitting.422 at the plate. Busby has raised her batting average to.333 on the season, after sitting at.154 to open the season. The hot stretch has seen Busby move into the two-hole and she has driven in 16 of her 17 RBI in the last 18 games. SMITH SWINGING Junior Lacy Smith is batting a career-best.300 on the season. Smith has also drove in a career-best 23 runs on the season. Her RBI total is second on the team to only Allison Davis. With five home runs, she is three shy of matching her career high of eight set last season. RETURN TO ACC 2017 saw Virginia return to the ACC Tournament for the first time since The Cavaliers won 8 of their last 10 games, including a 5-2 run in ACC play to earn a spot in the postseason. The Cavaliers finished the year with nine ACC victories, marking the most in a season since HOOS HITTING Virginia set eight different top 10 marks as a team in In Hardin s first season, the Hoos launched the second most home runs in program history (53) while setting school bests in slugging (.457) and extra base hits (146). The Cavaliers 231 runs scored rank eight in program history. SEASON NOTES JENNINGS JOINS PARTY Freshman Ashley Jennings had her best weekend of the season at the District Classic. Jennings went 4-for-7 in three games played, launching the first two home runs of her UVA career. She finished the weekend slugging with four RBI. CONTAGIOUS BATS Virginia has scored in double digits on three occasions this season. At the District Classic, the Hoos scored six or more runs in all four games. Five Cavaliers posted an average of over.300 for the weekend. As a team, Virginia hit.390, by far its best weekend of the year. SPACE RACE Seniors Allison Davis and Danni Ingraham are both chasing UVA history as they continue to climb the all-time home run leaderboard. Davis has opened the season red-hot, matching her career high of nine home runs in a single season. The incredible start has her and Ingraham tied for fourth all-time in the record books. That mark ranks 12th in the ACC. A major factor in the inflated ERA has been 154 walks issued by the Hoos. In addition, the Cavaliers have hit another 13 batters to total 167 free passes on the season. By contrast, opponents have issued just 87 total free bases. The 154 walks issued put the Hoos on pace to eclipse the program high of 232 in In 19 innings against Georgia Tech, the Hoos faced Yellow Jacket hitters with the bases empty just 23 times. TIGHTEN UP The Cavaliers have faced their fair share of issues in the field this season, piling up 38 errors. Virginia s.941 fielding percentage puts the Hoos at the bottom of the ACC. FIFTH INNING TROUBLE Through the first two ACC series of the season, Virginia has surrendered 31 runs in the fifth inning. 29 of those game in the first four games before the Hoos finally shook the voodoo with a frame in Saturday s win over Syracuse. SCOUTING THE EAGLES PITCHING The Eagles use a two-man rotation of Jessica Dreswick and Allyson Frei. The pair have combined to start all 24 games for Boston College and have worked all but one inning. Dreswick has made 21 appearances with 16 starts, owning a 2.40 ERA. She is tied for fourth in the ACC with 99 innings worked on the season. Opponents hit.214 off of Dreswick, who has struck out 96 while walking just 37. Frei has made 16 appearances, eight of which were starts. She holds a 2.25 ERA in 68 1/3 innings on the season. Frei has surrendered 36 runs, but only 22 have been earned. Opponents hit.253 off Frei, who has fanned 64 while walking 33. BATTING Boston College holds the worst batting average in the ACC, hitting just.225 on the season. Chloe Sharabba leads the Eagles with a.333 average and is the only player hitting over.300. The Eagles also rank at the bottom of the ACC in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging, hits, RBI. Cammi Sellers leads Boston College with 11 RBI on the season. Carly Severini joins her in double figures with 10 RBI. Four of BC s nine bats in the lineup hit below the Mendoza line on the season. MORE ON THE HOOS PITCHING WOES While the Hoos rank near the top of the ACC in most offensive categories, Virginia has struggled to settle in the circle. UVA s 5.45 ERA is over two full runs worse than any other team in the league. The Cavaliers are allowing opponents to hit at a.293 clip against them. The mark is the highest opponent batting average in the ACC. Virginia has compounded free passes with free passes, firing 34 wild pitches, doubling any other team in the ACC. BIG INNINGS, BIG TROUBLE Virginia has allowed opponents to score four or more runs in a single inning on 12 different occasions this season. Those 12 innings have come in 11 games. The Hoos are 1-10 in those games. FIND YOUR CLUTCH After entering ACC play just 35-for-177 with runners in scoring position, Virginia hit.400 in the same situation against Georgia Tech. The Hoos went 12-for-30 with runners at second or third to capitalize on scoring chances.
