The Hoos enter the weekend after going 2-3 at the Cowgirl Classic to open the year. Virginia ended opening weekend with a 14-run explosion in its win over Southern. After facing three new opponents in the first week of play, the Cavaliers face another first-time foe in Lipscomb on Friday. Olivia Gott and Allison Davis each had six hits to lead the Hoos on the weekend. Davis also launched the game-winner against HBU, a two-run shot, to give Virginia its first victory of the season. One area the Hoos will aim to improve is in the circle, where the Cavaliers issued 41 walks on opening weekend. 3 HOT STARTS A trio of Hoos hit above the.400 mark on opening weekend, led by catcher Olivia Gott at.500. The junior produced a pair of doubles and two RBI on opening weekend. Along with Gott, veteran Allison Davis hit.429 with six hits to tie for the team lead. The senior scored a team-high four runs and also launched her 19th career home run. FRESHMEN MAKE MARK Two newcomers made immediate impressions at the plate as Kate Covington and Madi Traver produced memorable opening weekends. Covington hit.417 with a pair of RBI and four runs scored to tie for the team lead. Traver, meanwhile, started her Virginia career with a pair of home runs. She s the first freshman to have her first two hits be home runs since at least Since 2000, she s the fifth Hoo to begin her career with a home run. RETURN TO ACC 2017 saw Virginia return to the ACC Tournament for the first time since The Cavaliers won 8 of their last 10 games, including a 5-2 run in ACC play to earn a spot in the postseason. The Cavaliers finished the year with nine ACC victories, marking the most in a season since AN OLD FOE Virginia and George Mason meet for the 86th time on Saturday. The series is the most frequently played non-conference tilt in Cavalier history. The Hoos and Patriots have met in 28 of the 39 years of Virginia softball. UVA owned the middle years of the series, reeling off 29 straight victories from HOOS HITTING Virginia set eight different top 10 marks as a team in In Hardin s first season, the Hoos launched the second most home runs in program history (53) while setting school bests in slugging (.457) and extra base hits (146). The Cavaliers 231 runs scored rank eight in program history. FINDING THE ZONE The Cavaliers look to shore up their efforts in the circle after surrendering 41 walks in the first weekend of play. Virginia walked 14 batters against Tulsa, marking a new single game record for the Hoos. The 41 walks led to 13 runs on the weekend, over half of the 25 opponents scored against the Hoos. When in the zone, Wahoo pitching was effective, holding opponents to a.243 BABIP. SEASON NOTES OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION In its opening weekend finale, Virginia exploded for 14 runs in a rout of Southern. The 14 markers are the most for the Hoos since The game featured a nine-run second inning, also the largest since 2015 for the Hoos. As a team, Virginia belted four doubles, a triple and a home run in the victory. It s the 11th time in 59 games under Hardin the Hoos have piled up five or more extra base hits. INGRAHAM S IMPACT A senior, first baseman Danni Ingraham will be a source of leadership for Virginia in As a junior, Ingraham hit 10 home runs, tied for ninth most in a single season in UVA history. She also led the Hoos with 34 RBI in 2017 and currently sits atop the all-time list with a.993 fielding percentage. Ingraham sits just 16 RBI away from entering UVA s top 10 all-time. The senior ranks fifth in career home runs and needs 11 to tie the all-time high at Virginia. TOP 5 CAREER HOME RUNS 1. Included in those are three of the most consistent bats from a season ago as Katie Park (.382, 29 RBI), McKall Miller (.327, 24 RBI) and Kaitlin Fitzgerald (.274, 21 RBI) all completed their eligibility. In addition, speedster Iyana Hughes (8-8 SB) departed along with 52-game starter Madison Labshere. Park, Miller and Labshere will all serve as graduate or student assistants in HOOS NEW With the departure of seven from the 2017 roster, the Cavaliers brought in eight freshman and a Juco transfer for the 2018 season.
