3 Big12Sport s.com / #Big12BSB NCAA TEAM NOTEBOOK TCU (50-18, 16-8 Big 12) GoFrogs.com Saturday, June 24 - Florida 3, TCU 0 (NCAA College World Series) For the second time in the College World Series, the Frogs fell victim to first-round draft pick Alex Faedo. He held the Frogs in check, working around a quartet of walks and three hits. No TCU hitter reached third base in the contest. Florida struck for single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings. Mike Rivera s RBI-ground out in the second with runners on the corners put the Gators up 1-0. A hit batter in the fourth scored on a double from Christian Hicks. A two-out bad-hop single off of first base drove in the final run of the game. Jared Janczak (9-2) allowed the three runs on seven hits and struck out seven. Durbin Feltman retired all six batters he faced, striking out five. Friday, June 23 - TCU 9, Florida 2 (NCAA College World Series) A base hit from Ryan Merrill with two outs in the third got the Frogs off and running. Austen Wade put the Frogs in front with a double off the left field wall. Josh Watson s two-out triple to deep center drove in a pair of runs and TCU had a 4-2 lead. TCU broke the game open in the sixth inning, striking for four runs on just two hits. Wade hit into a fielder s choice to make it a 5-2 ballgame. Following a walk to Humphreys that loaded the bases, Skoug cleared them with a double to right center for an 8-2 lead. The Frogs added their final run on a Humphreys ground out in the eighth. Thursday, June 22 - TCU 4, Louisville 3 (NCAA College World Series) Sean Wymer (6-4) entered the game with two on and two out in the fifth with TCU clinging to a 4-3 lead. He got National Player of the Year Brendan McKay to strike out on three pitches to keep the lead intact. From there, Wymer mowed through the Cardinals, allowing a single hit in the eighth and ninth inning. He faced just one batter over the minimum in his 4 1/3 innings on the mound thanks to a caught stealing in the eighth. Wymer finished with five strikeouts. With two outs in the fourth, Elliott Barzilli s base hit got the ball rolling for the Frogs. Two stolen bases later, he was standing on third and scored easily on a Connor Wanhanen double to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead. After Josh Watson was hit by the pitch, TCU executed a double steal to put two in scoring position. Ryan Merrill came up big with a two-run single to right for a 3-0 lead. Austen Wade drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a base hit to left. Tuesday, June 20 - TCU 4, Texas A&M 1 (NCAA College World Series) Brian Howard (12-3) was masterful four 7+ innings on the mound. His first six outs were recorded via the strikeout en route to tying his career-high with 12 in the game. Howard allowed just one run on five hits and didn t walk a batter in leading the Frogs to victory. Early runs provided all the support Howard needed. TCU pushed across a run in the second and three in the third to build an early 4-0 lead. Howard kept the Aggies in check for most of the contest. He retired the side in order in four of his seven innings and only faced more than four batters once in an inning. The Aggies lone run scored on an RBI ground out with two runners in scoring position in the sixth. Sunday, June 18 - Florida 3, TCU 0 (NCAA College World Series) Florida jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first and never looked back. On the mound, Alex Faedo held the Horned Frogs in check, limiting TCU to just two hits, walking two and striking out 11. A lead-off walk turned into an early lead for Florida as Ryan Larson scored without the benefit of a hit in the first. An error had him standing on second with nobody out. Back-to-back ground outs made it 1-0. Jared Janczak (9-1) battled around base runners for most of his time on the mound. He stranded two runners in the second and another in the third before getting touched for a run on two hits in the fourth and another on three hits in the fifth. He finished the night allowing three runs on six hits in 4+ innings. TCU had its best chance to get on the board in the third after a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases with one out. Faedo punched out back-to-back batters to keep the Florida 1-0 lead in tact. Sunday, June 11 - TCU 8, Missouri State 1 (NCAA Super Regional) Brian Howard (11-3) was at his postseason best once again for the Horned Frogs. After allowing a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first, he held the vaunted Missouri State offense in check. On the night, he surrendered just four hits, walked two and struck out 11. TCU spotted Howard with a run in the top of the first on two out single from Cam Warner that plated Zach Humphreys. After Missouri State tied the game in the bottom of the first, TCU struck back in the second to regain a lead it would never relinquish. Evan Skoug gave the Frogs breathing room with a two-run home run in the third inning. He drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to push the lead to four, 5-1. Barzilli s three-run blast in the ninth put the exclamation point on the victory. Sean Wymer came on in relief with one out in the eighth. He struck out four of the five batters he faced. Saturday, June 10 - TCU 3, Missouri State 2 (NCAA Super Regional) Missouri State opened the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second, but TCU responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-out run. The score stayed tied until the fifth when the Bears took advantage of a one-out double. With runners on the corners, Hunter Steinmetz dropped down a perfect bunt to give Missouri State a 2-1 lead. Jared Janczak navigated his way through base runners in four of his 6 1/3 innings of work. He finished the night, allowing a pair of runs on five hits with one walk and struck out 10. TCU was finally able to break through in the eighth. Skoug greeted the new MSU pitcher with a home run to right field to put the Frogs in front 3-2. Durbin Feltman came on and worked around a pair of base runners in the ninth. He got a game-ending double play to lock up the victory. Sean Wymer (5-4) picked up the win in relief. He allowed just one base runner in 1 2/3 innings work. Monday, June 5 - TCU 15, Dallas Baptist 3 (NCAA Regional) Dallas Baptist jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-out home run from Matt Duce in the first, but a three-spot by the Frogs in the second sent the Frogs on the road to victory. A six spot in the third broke the game open as TCU took a 9-2 lead. Brian Howard (10-3) started for TCU and tossed 6 2/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out three. Evan Skoug hit his 18th home run of the season, the most by any Horned Frog since Matt Curry hit 18 in He now has 34 career home runs, which is tied for fifth-most all-time in TCU history with Paul Gonzalez ( ). Sunday, June 4 - TCU 5, Virginia 1 (NCAA Regional) TCU opened up a 1-0 lead in the second inning as it made the most out of a lead-off double off the bat of Nolan Brown. Two errors and three hits in the third helped extend TCU s lead to 4-0. Virginia had base runners in each of the first five innings, but starter Jared Janczak limited the activity on the bases to just one runner. The Cavaliers picked up their lone run of the game in the eight after a lead-off double scored on a base hit with nobody out. The Frogs turned the second of two double plays to minimize the damage. Saturday, June 3 - TCU 9, Central Connecticut State 6 (NCAA Regional) Mitchell Traver (4-1) was brilliant in working through seven innings on the mound. He limited the Blue Devils to a run on one hit, walked two and struck out a season-high nine. TCU opened the scoring in the fifth. A two-out rally in the sixth extended TCU s lead to 3-0. After CCSU had gotten on the board in the eighth on a two-out double, TCU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a 9-1 game. The Blue Devils made a late comeback in the ninth, but Durbin Feltman came on and got a strikeout to seal the win.
