Trojan Softball team (15-18 overall record, 9-7 North Star record) continues their conference action at PC Dome (1500 N Main Street) in Aberdeen, S.D. Sunday evening and Monday. The Trojans will face another top team in the North Star conference, playing Valley City State (N.D.) (27-8 overall record, 10-3 NSAA conference record, receiving votes in the NAIA Softball Top 25 national poll) in the North Star s four-game series. VCSU was originally scheduled to host the four-game series, but unfavorable playing field conditions had forced to move the series to PC Dome. It will be the fourth straight week, including 12 straight games that the Trojans will be playing at the PC Dome. Dakota State will step aside their North Star conference play on Thursday, visiting No. 25 -ranked Morningside (Iowa) (19-8 overall record). The doubleheader is set for 3 p.m./5 p.m. at SYA Complex (1001 Riverside Blvd.) in Sioux City, Iowa. DSU FALLS TO NSAA S LEADER JIMMIES North Star s conference leader and No. 16- ranked Jamestown (N.D.) swept past Dakota (S.D.) 3-1 and 9-2 at PC Dome on April 5. All the runs came in the first inning in the first game of the doubleheader. Peyton Brokiewicz led off the game with a solo-home run for DSU 1-0 lead, but UJ scored three runs in the bottom half of the first frame. Brokiewicz finished the game with a home run and a double for the Trojans. Xitlali Lopez also had three hits. Nicole Stewart recorded a double. Lopez took the loss in the first game after tossing a complete game for DSU. She recorded four strikeouts. Dakota State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second game, but Jamestown scored nine unanswered runs to complete the doubleheader sweep. Stewart had a double, single and two RBIs for DSU. Audrey Kosman had a single. Kelly Drake took the loss after pitching a complete game. TROJANS SWEEP V-HAWKS Dakota State (S.D.) bounced back in the winning column after the North Star s doubleheader sweep over Viterbo (Wis.) 7-3 and 6-3 on April 6 in Aberdeen, S.D. Jasmin Lucero was 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple, two singles and two RBIs in the first game for DSU. Taylor Poe, Audrey Kosman, Nicole Stewart and Peyton Brokiewicz each had a double. Kailee McFadden and Xitlali Lopez each had two hits and an RBI. Kosman earned first pitching victory of the season for Dakota State, pitching a complete game. She struck out a season-high eight batters. Brokiewicz, McFadden and Kosman each tallied two hits in the second game for Dakota State. Stewart and Lopez each had a double. Stewart collected two RBIs. (RV) MSU DSU SKYROCKETS IN NSAA STANDINGS Dakota State (S.D.) has skyrocketed to a thirdplace in the latest North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Softball conference standings after Thursday s games. The Trojans are holding a half-game lead over Dickinson State (N.D.), who dropped a pair of games on April 12, in the conference standings. DSU is 2.5 games behind second-place Valley City State (N.D.). Dakota State is 9-7 record in North Star contests, including a forfeit victory by Waldorf (Iowa) on Feb. 24 due to NAIA eligibility violation committed by WU. The Trojans had recorded nine conference wins this season, the most conference wins since joining the North Star conference in DSU also collected its most overall wins since 2013 (16 wins), where the Trojans had won 15 games this season. TROJANS DOUBLE UP 9 5 According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Friday, Dakota State (S.D.) averages 2.2 doubles per game. The Trojans racked up a total of 72 doubles this season. The Trojans 72 doubles are currently thirdmost in a single season in the record book. Xitlali Lopez ranks seventh in the NAIA with 16 doubles for Dakota State. Nicole Stewart also hit 15 doubles this season, which is ninth most doubles in the nation. DSU s Peyton Brokiewicz drilled 13 doubles for the Trojans, 26th-most doubles in the NAIA. Brokiewicz is currently fifth all-time in the Trojan Softball school record with 32 doubles. Stewart is sixth 30 career doubles. Steven Kissel is entering his third season as Dakota State University softball head coach. A native of Limon, Colo., Kissel has coached six different colleges as a head softball coach in a span of 23 years. He had amassed an overall record of and will be entering his 27th season as a collegiate head coach. Kissel began his collegiate head coaching career at his alma mater from 1987 through He received his Physical Education degree from Dana in Kissel's teams at Dana College won six conference championships in eight years ( and 1994) and qualified for district tournaments all eight years. The 1994 team won the district championship and advanced to the 'Elite Eight' of the NAIA National Tournament. Kissel was a six-time conference Coach-of-the-Year while coaching at Dana. He was also a two-time District Coach-of-the-Year in 1991 and After receiving his Masters' Degree in Health Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1994, Kissel next coached at Minot State (N.D.) for one year as head softball coach and assistant football coach. That year, the football team made it all the way to the 'Elite Eight' in the NAIA playoffs and the softball team qualified for its first-ever regional tournament. Kissel's next coaching stint was at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. His squad qualified for the NCAA Division II regional tournament. In 1998, Kissel joined Oklahoma Panhandle State where he was the head softball and men's/women's cross country coach. He spent the next seven years rebuilding a program that had won less than ten games per year to a program that consistently won 30 games per year. Kissel also served in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) department, was the NCAA Compliance Coordinator, a member of the Teacher Education Council and the Athletic Committee. Kissel was named the head coach at the University of Central Arkansas where he spent three years and helped UCA make its transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. He was the head coach at Western Texas College from 2008 to He earned his 500th career collegiate coaching victory during his time at WTC. 6 Rachel Fricke Assistant Coach Fifth Season University of South Dakota Rachel Fricke is entering her fifth year as an assistant softball coach for the Trojans. During her time at Dakota State (S.D.), she has assisted in coaching one (1) All-Region player, nine (9) North Star Athletic Association All- Conference players, three (3) Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, 18 North Star Scholar-Athletes and one (1) NAIA Scholar Team. Fricke is the team s Academic Coordinator, Outfield Coach and assists in the everyday operations of the program, including recruiting and scouting. Fricke was a four-year letter winner at NCAA Division I University of South Dakota. While at USD, Fricke played in 183 games starting in 179 as a catcher or designated player, posting a.972 fielding percentage.
