Chicago used a walk in the 12th to eventually take an 8-7 lead, but Kansas City didn t quit and tied it in the home half on an Alex Gordon ground out...unfortunately, another walk, the 10th of the night by KC pitching, led to the tie-breaking run in the 14th to send the Royals to their fourth straight setback and 10 1/2 games behind the frontrunning ChiSox...Alex Gordon, Jeff Francoeur and returnee Lorenzo Cain each had 3-hit efforts, while Escobar drove home 3. A LOOK BACK AT EARLIER TODAY--Last night s (this morning s) 14-inning affair that took 5:23 to play witnessed a combined 542 pitches called by plate umpire Chris Guccione, with the Royals using 292 tosses compared to Chicago s there were a combined 51 baserunners in the contest, as each club collected 17 hits, while Kansas City pitchers walked 10, the last two the most crippling, and the White Sox issued seven freebies...the clubs also combined to strand 28 runners on base, with the Royals getting what could have been the game winner on base in the ninth thru 13th innings before going in order in the 14th...the nine pitchers used by the Royals established a franchise record, one more than seven other extra inning contests in club history...chris Getz was the only KC position player to not see action. 10-GAME STAND UNDERWAY--Last night jumpstarted a 10-game post All-Star stay for the Royals, with Chicago here thru tomorrow and then the Mariners and Twins hit town...seattle will pay its only visit to The K for four games starting Monday night...the Minnesota Twins will wrap up the club s second and final 10-game homestand of the season with three games next weekend...kc is just in Kauffman Stadium in 2012, but will have a chance to redeem themselves with 43 of the club s remaining 77 games (56%) scheduled to be contested here. VS. PALE HOSE--Luke is facing Chicago for the 12th time (11th start) and for the second time in he enters at 4-4, posting a 3.95 ERA over 68.1 IP (30 ER), including 1-2 at home with a 5.86 ERA (18 ER in 27.2 IP)...he tossed 7.0 shutout innings in his lone 2012 meeting to this point on May 12 in The Cell, allowing just 3 hits in a 5-0 triumph...his first career shutout also took place vs. the ChiSox on September 18, 2009 at U.S. Cellular. AT HOME--Hochevar is just 1-4 in 7 starts this season at Kauffman Stadium, but the win came in his last start in impressive fashion with an 8-0 shutout over the Rays on June 25...he has allowed 28 earned runs on 43 hits in 38.1 innings in his home starts this season for a 6.57 ERA and carries a mark with a 4.66 ERA in 61 career home appearances, including 59 starts.
