SKOGLUND SHINES--Eric Skoglund had arguably his best overall big league performance to snap Kansas City s victory drought with a career-high 7.0 innings last night to record the 5-2 win...after surrendering a home run to Tim Anderson on the game s fifth pitch, Skoglund retired 15 in a row and faced just one over the minimum over the last 22 hitters he faced, allowing a sixth inning single which was wiped out by a double play and then a two-out walk in the seventh...his nine strikeouts were three more than any previous career start, while the 7.0 innings were two outs more than his Major League debut here against Detroit last May 30...he s the first Royal lefty to record 7.0 innings with two hits or fewer allowed and at least nine strikeouts since Danny Duffy s record-setting 16-strikeout performance in Tampa Bay on August 1, RISP REVERSAL--For the first time in 12 games the Royals got as many as three hits with runners in scoring position in last night s second game, enough to record the 5-2 victory and snap the extended losing streak...kc had been limited to two or fewer knocks in RISP situations over an 11-game stretch leading up to the nightcap, with the last time of at least three occurring on April 17 in the first of two at Toronto...the Royals entered the second game on Saturday 4-for-44 with runners in scoring position (.091) during the 5-game slide that ended with last night s win...kansas City has scored just 84 runs through 26 games for a 3.2 per game average, which ranks last in the Majors, while hitting.178 (38-for-214) with runners in scoring position, which is 30th. SOLER POWER--Right-fielder Jorge Soler has quietly rebounded from an 0-for-11 start to the season, going 1-for-3 with a walk in each end of the splitdoubleheader on Saturday giving him a.462 mark (6-for-13) through the first four games of this series, while walking in each contest for a.588 on-base pct. since the Sox hit town...he has now walked in nine consecutive games, the longest streak in the Majors this year, one more than Bryce Harper recorded from April this streak of games with a free passes is also the longest by a Royal since Mike Sweeney had nine from July 17-24, Soler s 17 walks on the year not only lead the Royals, but rank tied for sixth in the American League...since the 0-for-11 start to the year, he has batted.350 (21-for-60) in his last 18 games, reaching base safely in 17 of them, with six doubles, two homers, 13 walks and a.480 on-base pct...his season OBP of.433 is also good for sixth in the league.. QUICK TRIP TO BEAN TOWN--The Royals will take a quick three-day trip to Boston for 6:10 games (CDT) tomorrow and Tuesday, then a 12:10 getaway day matinee on Wednesday...the Royals were 4-2 vs. the BoSox last year including a 2-1 stop in Fenway Park...the clubs have played 470 times since Kansas City joined the league 50 years ago and each team has won 235, with the Royals going in famed Fenway. BACK HOME THURSDAY--Kansas City will return from its three-day journey to Fenway Park for a four-game set with the Detroit Tigers beginning on Thursday with a 1:15 series opener for the annual School Day at The K celebration by FOX 4...the series also has 7:15, 3:15 and 1:15 starts Friday thru Sunday. TODAY S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Hector Santiago (0-0, 3.38) vs. RHP Ian Kennedy (1-3, 3.46) Career Career Hector Santiago vs. Royals Major League Record 0-0 (3.38 ERA) Ian Kennedy vs. White Sox Major League Record 1-3 (3.46 ERA) IAN KENNEDY takes the hill for his sixth start of the season, the 273rd of his career, 275th appearance he s facing the White Sox for the 11th time in his career and second this season...the 33-year-old right-hander is in the third season of a five-year contract that runs through the 2020 season...he was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. STREAK SNAPPED IN SHORT OUTING--Ian suffered a 5-2 defeat to Milwaukee last Tuesday, exiting after 3.0 innings with a contusion in his right foot after being struck by a Ryan Braun line drive in the third...he was charged with four runs on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts, snapping his streak of 273 consecutive career appearances with at least one K...his run was the second-longest active streak to begin a career, trailing only David Price (275)...Ian retired five of the first seven hitters he faced, before the Brew Crew scored four runs with two outs in the third on Braun s RBI hit off of Kennedy s foot, which was followed immediately by Travis Shaw s three-run home run...it marked his shortest outing since going 3.0 innings last September 8 in an 8-5 loss to Minnesota. EARLY-SEASON WORK--Since joining the Royals in 2016, Kennedy has pitched to a 2.81 ERA (26 ER in 83.1 IP) in his 14 starts during the months of March and April...in that span he s holding the opposition to a.216 average (66-for-305), however he has just a 3-7 record to show for it...during that stretch, his ERA ranks third in the American League (min. 12 starts), trailing only Chris Sale (1.71) and Carlos Carrasco (2.55). LACKING SUPPORT--Ian has received just eight runs of support in his five starts (26.0 innings) this season, with four of them coming on April 18 in a 15-5 loss at Toronto since the start of 2017, his 3.85 run support average (77 runs in IP) is fourth lowest in the Majors (min. 30 starts). STARTING SOMETHING--Despite a brief stint on the disabled list last season, Ian made at least 30 starts for the eighth consecutive season it s the thirdlongest active streak in the Majors, trailing only Jon Lester (10 straight) and Max Scherzer (9 straight) since his first full season in the Majors (2010), his 261 starts (including this afternoon) rank third to Scherzer (265) and Lester (262) from , he led the NL in starts (192) and ranked third in innings pitched (1175.0). VS. WHITE SOX--Ian is 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA (29 ER in 56.0 IP) in 10 previous starts against the White Sox...that includes a no-decision here on March 31, when he held Chicago to one run on four hits over 6.0 innings in a 4-3 KC setback...his last win over the Sox came on September 11, 2016, when he outdueled Chris Sale, 2-0, tossing 6.0 scoreless frames...he s with a 4.72 ERA all-time vs. AL Central foes, including with a 4.63 mark as a Royal. AT HOME--Kennedy is making his fourth home start of the year, and looking for his first win, entering at 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA (6 ER in 15.0 IP)...he snapped a franchise record 18-game home winless streak last Sept. 29 with a 2-1 victory vs. Arizona he s allowed a total seven runs in his last four home starts (3.15 ERA), but has just one victory as the Royals offense has scored just five runs in those outings...ian is with a 3.97 ERA in 131 career home starts.
