HOZ JUMPS INTO ASG LEAD - PEREZ EXPANDS HIS--Miami native Eric Hosmer has made a push in the last week among the voters to overtake both Yonder Alonso and Miguel Cabrera and vault into the top spot at first base for the 2017 All-Star Game in Marlins Park...Hoz, the MVP of last summer s Midsummer Classic in San Diego, has 936,734 votes in today s announcement, a near 50,000 vote advantage over Alonso...meanwhile, Salvador Perez has expanded his lead for his fourth straight opportunity to start the All-Star Game, recording 1,453,088 votes, which are over 400,000 more than current runner-up Brian McCann... Perez is coming off the 2016 contest in Petco Park when he received the most votes, with 4,965,838, becoming the first Royal to lead the Major League balloting since George Brett in ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Chris Sale (8-3, 2.82) vs. LHP Matt Strahm (2-3, 3.67) Career Career Chris Sale vs. Royals Major League Record 8-3 (2.82 ERA) Matt Strahm vs. Red Sox Major League Record 2-3 (3.67 ERA) MATT STRAHM is making second start and 22nd appearance of the season tonight...it s the 43rd outing of his Major League career, with the first 41 coming out of the bullpen prior to his start last Thursday in Anaheim...this is his second career appearance (first start) vs. the BoSox...he was selected by KC in the 21st round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan. FANTASTIC DEBUT AS STARTER--Matt made his initial Major League start last Thursday night in Anaheim, earning a 7-2 victory over the Angels...he worked 5.0 innings, allowing an unearned run and three hits with a walk and three strikeouts, his first professional start in 11 months, with previous one coming July 15, 2016 with Northwest Arkansas (AA)...after allowing a one-out RBI single to Albert Pujols in the opening frame, Strahm retired 13 of the final 15 hitters he faced...meanwhile, the Royals offense scored four times in the first four innings to give him all the breathing room he needed for his second victory of the year...his 5.0 innings and 68 pitches were both career highs in a Major League game. HARD TO HIT--Strahm has been tough to square up in his big league career, entering tonight with a.176 opponents average (29-for-165) since debuting on July 31 of last season...among big league pitchers that have faced at least 150 hitters in that span, his average ranks eighth, with Craig Kimbrel s.094 average leading the way...matt has been especially puzzling for right-handed hitters, holding them to a.142 mark (16-for-113), including a.161 average this season (10-for-62). CAREER HIGHLIGHTS--Strahm made his Major League debut last July 31 at Texas after allowing a run in his first outing, he recorded 16.1 consecutive scoreless innings from August 2-September 21, the longest scoreless streak by a Royal in 2016 and the longest by a KC rookie since the late Yordano Ventura (18.0 IP) in 2014 Matt earned his first Major League win on August 17 at Detroit, pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning and recording a scoreless eighth in front of a four-run Royals rally he was a South Atlantic League All-Star in 2015 with Lexington (A), just one year after returning from Tommy John surgery, which forced him to miss all of 2013 and part of the 2014 season.
