Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/14 KC W, 7-1 Duffy Ramirez 26,838 4/15 KC 4/16 KC Ana Ana Ana Ana DUFFY DEALS ONCE AGAIN--Kansas City s Opening Day hurler for 2017 continued his strong start to the year with a 7-1 victory last night in the series opener vs. the Angels...Duff, now 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA, worked 7.0 innings allowing just three hits and a run with two walks and six strikeouts...things started a bit on the rough side when the first three Halos reached via a pair of singles sandwiched around a walk, but during that sequence Lorenzo Cain nabbed Kole Calhoun at third base while L.A. was scoring its first and only run...from that point forward, Duffy retired 20 of the last 22 he faced to secure the win... meanwhile, the offense matched its best run output of the young season led by Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez, who clubbed their fourth and fifth home runs, respectively, with Moose s blast turning a 1-0 first inning deficit into a 2-1 advantage...cain not only contributed defensively, but continued his solid start to the year, going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. A BOXSCORE ODDITY--Despite scoring seven times last night, the Royals still didn t get a hit with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-3 on the evening...it marked the most runs scored by Kansas City in a game without a hit in RISP situations since a 7-4 win in Yankee Stadium on June 3, 1994, when KC went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position...on the year, the Royals are hitting.154 (10-for-65) in scoring position situations, tying Toronto for 29th among all big league clubs...this is unchartered territory for the Royals, who finished fourth in the A.L. last year with a.273 mark with runners in scoring position, after finishing second in the loop in both 2015 (.281) and 2014 (.271). LOVIN THOSE LEFTIES--The southpaw duo of Danny Duffy and Jason Vargas are off to outstanding starts as the 2017 season unfolds...each at 2-0 on the year, the twosome has combined for 33.2 innings allowing only 24 hits and five runs (all earned) with nine walks and 31 strikeouts for a 1.34 ERA...Duff s win last night extended his club record Kauffman Stadium unbeated streak to 16 starts with last night s performance, posting an 8-0 record and 3.55 ERA (38 earned runs iun innings) during the skein...he has not been defeated in The K since September 5, as for Vargas, who was a winner here on Thursday vs. the A s with 7.2 scoreless frames, he has recorded a 1.40 ERA in his five starts since being deemed ready to perform last September after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July, the entire starting rotation is off to a solid start, with the right-handed trio of Nate Karns, Ian Kennedy and Jason Hammel helping the Royals post an overall starters ERA of 2.70, which leads the American League and is second in the Majors only to the Cubs 2.65 mark. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing righthander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Matt Shoemaker (0-0, 7.71) vs. RHP Nate Karns (0-0, 7.11) Career Career Matt Shoemaker vs. Royals Major League Record 0-0 (7.71 ERA) Nate Karns vs. Angels Major League Record 0-0 (7.11 ERA) NATE KARNS makes his second start and third appearance of the year, his 48th career assignment and 57th overall outing...tonight is also his fourth career start against the Angels...the 29-year-old is in his fifth Major League season and fourth team, pitching previously with Washington (2013), Tampa Bay ( ) and Seattle (2016)...he was acquired by the Royals on January 6 in the deal that sent Jarrod Dyson to the Mariners. LATE HOMER PREVENTS FIRST WIN--Nate was in line for his first victory with the Royals last Sunday, however Houston rallied twice in the late innings and won 5-4 in 12...Karns allowed a leadoff home run to George Springer in the first and then scattered five other hits over 5.2 innings, exiting the game with a 3-1 lead...it marked the deepest that the righty has worked since May 30 of last season, when he tossed 6.2 frames in a 9-3 triumph over San Diego...after a strikeout-caught stealing double play ended the second, Nate did not allow another hit until Jose Altuve s one-out single in the sixth as KC built a two-run lead...however, Marwin Gonzalez s game-tying homer in the seventh after Karns was removed ended his shot at his first win of IN REVIEW--Nate went 6-2 in 2016 with Seattle, recording a 5.15 ERA (54 ER in 94.1 IP) in 22 outings (15 starts), before missing the last two months of the season with a lower back strain he went 5-1 with a 3.43 ERA (22 ER in 57.2 IP) through his first 10 starts, before posting a 7.33 ERA (19 ER in 23.1 IP) over his final five starts he was then moved to the bullpen, where he recorded an 8.78 ERA (13 ER in 13.1 IP) in seven outings prior to his season-ending injury. STIKEOUT STORY--Despite just three strikeouts in his first start, Karns still has a 9.11 K s-per-9.0 innings ratio in his career (275 K s in IP)...he s one of 20 MLB hurlers (minimum 45 starts) to average better than a strikeout per inning since last season, Nate fanned six or more in eight of his 15 starts.
