LID-LIFTER LOSS--The Royals had their two-game Opening Day winning streak halted on Monday with a 7-1 loss here to the Twins in Kansas City s first-ever season opener in the Twin Cities...a 1-1 game that featured outstanding work by each club s starters, Danny Duffy and Ervin Santana, took a turn for the worst in the seventh when KC relievers allowed six runs on just four hits, with four walks (one intentional)...the inning was keyed by a trio of bases loaded walks which handed the defeat to reliever Matt Strahm, who walked in the tie-breaking run before departing...as for Duffy, making his first Opening Day start, he provided 6.0 innings of one-run ball, a solo homer by Miguel Sano in the fourth... all told, Duff gave up three hits and the run, with three walks and eight strikeouts...meanwhile, the KC offense was held to just three hits, with Mike Moustakas providing the lone tally with a solo homer to leadoff off the fourth...the loss dropped Kansas City to in its 49 season openers, including a 5-19 ledger on the road. IN THE BIG INNING--In the beginning of the 2017 season, it was the big inning that handed Kansas City its first loss of the year, as the Royals allowed six runs in the deciding seventh inning of Monday s defeat to the Twins...the six run frame tied for the most tallies allowed in a season opening inning, marking the third time, first since Detroit plated a half-dozen runs in the seventh inning on April 4, REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received of that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing righthander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career... NEW FACES IN Kansas City had 10 players on Monday s Opening Day roster who were not aboard when the 2016 club opened the campaign...the list includes Cheslor Cuthbert, Jason Hammel, Mike Minor, Raul Mondesi, Brandon Moss, Peter Moylan, Matt Strahm, Jason Vargas and Travis Wood...Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar extended their Opening Day lineup streak to seven in a row while it was the 10th in the last 11 years for Gordon...Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain each started in their sixth straight opener, while Salvador Perez was in his fifth in a row. DOLLARS FOR BANDAGES--Danny Duffy gave the Noah s Bandage Project a nice boost with his performance here on Monday, fanning eight hitters, which translates to $4,000 toward providing fun bandages to kids and raise money for pediatric cancer research...duffy will donate $500 for each strikeout he records during the 2017 season.
