Perez snapped a 2-2 tie with a 398-foot shot to left in the third inning, his second of the season, then Gordo added to KC s lead at the time with a fourth inning 422-ft. blast to right...after Detroit tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth, Soler smoked a 441-ft. home run over the water in left to give the Royals a lead they wouldn t relinquish...eric Skoglund came an out shy of qualifying for a win, allowing five runs in 4.2 innings, but Kevin McCarthy was outstanding recording five outs over four hitters faced to up his mark to the Royals, who have scuffled this year with runners in scoring position, had a superb day, going 5-for-11...the win was KC s third in a row at home after snapping a 10-game slide in The K. SOLER POWER--Right fielder Jorge Soler hammered his third home run of the year, second in three games, with the go-ahead blast in the fifth inning yesterday...he has now hit safely in nine straight games, one shy of his career best with the Cubs in 2015, while also reaching base safely in a career-high 18 in a row...soler is batting.400 (14-for-35) with five doubles, three home runs, seven runs scored, eight driven in, six walks, a hit by pitch with a.500 on-base pct. and OPS during his hitting streak...he has walked in 11 of the last 14 games which included a streak of one freebie in nine straight games snapped last weekend...soler s 19 walks on the year not only lead the Royals, but rank tied for fifth in the league, while his.435 on-base pct. is tied for third...since snapping an 0-for-11 start to the year, he has batted.354 (29-for-82) while reaching safely in 22 of his last 23 games with nine doubles, four homers, 16 walks, two hit by pitches and a.470 on-base pct. and.610 slugging pct. which adds up to a OPS. IMPROVING AT THE PLATE--The Royals seem to be turning a corner offensively, hitting.319 (67-for-210) in the last six games, while scoring 37 runs for a 6.2 per game average and posting a 4-2 mark...those numbers are a vast improvement over the 3.2 runs per game scored over the first 25 games of the year, while hitting just.175 (35-for-200) in RISP situations and batting.239 overall as a team...the Royals were 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position yesterday vs. the Tigers, but remain 30th in the Majors in RISP hitting with a team mark of.199 (53-for-266), but have hit.273 (18-for-66) in RISP situations during this six-game stretch. SUPER DUPER--Our own Bill Duplissea went 2-for-2 on replay reviews on Wednesday in Boston, as Jorge Soler was indeed proved safe on his second double of the day and Danny Duffy in fact recorded a pickoff of Eduardo Nunez in the sixth...with New York s agreement on Dupe s assessment in each case, he is now a perfect 8-for-8 on the year, the only club to have a perfect start to their replay review season...dupe has made good on over 67% of his challenges in his career (107-for-159), which ranks among the best, including a Major League best 72% success rate over the last three seasons (60-for-83). MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU--To celebrate May 4, the Royals are holding their annual Star Wars Night, with a special ticket package offered to those who wish to get their hands on a Sal Solo bobblehead...tonight is also the first summer fireworks post-game show Career Career Francisco Liriano vs. Royals Major League Record 3-1 (3.38 ERA) Ian Kennedy vs. Tigers Major League Record 1-3 (3.48 ERA) TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: LHP Francisco Liriano (3-1, 3.38) vs. RHP Ian Kennedy (1-3, 3.48) IAN KENNEDY takes the hill for his seventh start of the season, the 274th of his career and 276th appearance he s facing Detroit for the first time this year and the 10th in his career...the 33-year-old right-hander is in the third season of a five-year contract that runs through the 2020 season...he was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. DECISION-LESS DESPITE SOLID START--Ian snapped a three-start losing streak, but could not secure his second win last Sunday here against the White Sox, instead settling for a no-decision in KC s 5-4 victory...he left the game with a 4-2 lead, allowing two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings, but saw Chicago tie the score with single runs in the sixth and seventh after he departed...he permitted just two baserunners in the first three innings, before a walk and a double preceded Daniel Palka s two-run double in the fourth...kennedy stranded a leadoff single and a one-out walk in the fifth, before exiting after 97 pitches, with Cheslor Cuthbert s second home run of the game giving KC the lead...in three seasons with the Royals, Ian has a 2.86 ERA (28 ER in 88.1 IP) in his starts during March and April, which is the third-best ERA in American League during that stretch (min. 15 starts), but has a 3-7 record in those starts. STINGY IN RISP SITUATIONS--Kennedy has held the opposition to a.139 batting average (5-for-36) with runners in scoring position, good for sixth in the American League (min. 25 batters faced)...that includes holding the White Sox to 1-for-7 with RISP in his last start the lone hit Daniel Palka s two-run double...over the course of his Royals career, Ian has allowed just a.219 average (57-for-260) in RISP situations, which is fourth-lowest in the AL since LACKING SUPPORT--Ian has received 12 runs of support in his 31.0 innings this season, for a 3.48 run support average...over the past two seasons, his 3.94 run support average is the lowest in the American League among pitchers that have made at least 35 starts and third-lowest in the Majors...in that span, the Royals are averaging 6.63 runs of support in his wins (27 runs in 36.2 IP) and a 2.38 run support average (18 runs in 68.0 IP) in his defeats. DURABLE STARTER--Despite a brief stint on the disabled list last season, Ian made at least 30 starts for the eighth consecutive season it s the third-longest active streak in the Majors, trailing only Jon Lester (10 straight) and Max Scherzer (9 straight) since his first full season in the Majors (2010), his 262 starts (including this evening) rank third to Scherzer (266) and Lester (263) from , he led the NL in starts (192) and ranked third in innings pitched (1175.0). VS. TIGERS--He s making his first start of the year vs. Detroit and 10th of his career, entering with a 3-4 mark and a 4.01 ERA (23 ER in 51.2 IP)...he s won three of his last four starts, most recently on July 26 of last season, when he allowed one run on three hits over 6.0 innings in a 16-2 triumph at Comerica Park...Ian is with a 4.70 ERA in his career against AL Central foes, including with a 4.60 ERA (97 ER in IP) as a Royal. AT HOME--Kennedy is making his third-straight home start and fifth overall, entering at 0-2, despite a 3.60 ERA (8 ER in 20.0 IP)...he snapped a franchise record 18-game home winless streak last Sept. 29 with a 2-1 victory vs. Arizona he s allowed 12 runs over his last six home starts (3.86 ERA), but has just one victory...ian is with a 3.97 ERA in 132 career home starts. 3 Hitting Notes Abraham Almonte This Series: Has not played BOS Series: 0-for-9, BB Hit Streak: 0 g (0-10) = Abraham went 0-for-5 with a walk on Tuesday in Boston, but made a pair of leaping catches in deep center field, including one to end the game in the 13th inning. = Almonte went 0-for-9 in Boston and is 0-for-his-last-10 on the heels of a six-game hitting streak from April 20-28, in which he hit.450/.522/.650 (9-for-20). = He s 6-for-13 (.462) vs. Detroit in 2018, including a go-ahead grand slam in the Sonic Slam sixth inning on April 22, his second career slam and first since Aug. 30, 2015 the Sonic Slam won Jadah Bradley of Eugene, Mo. $25,000 & was the ninth since the promotion began in 1995 and first since Cam Gallagher s last Aug. 14. = Almonte hasn t been charged with an error in center field since Aug. 20, 2014, converting all 201 chances at the position in 84 games (79 starts) since. = The Royals are his fourth Major League team in five years also spent time with Seattle ( ), San Diego ( ) and Cleveland ( ).
