LEXINGTON TAKES SALLY LEAGUE CROWN--Kansas City s Class A affiliate, the Lexington Legends, won their first South Atlantic League title since 2001 with a 2-1 win at Lakewood last night...j.c. Cloney, the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year in 2018 for his work with Idaho Falls, tossed the first 5.0 innings, allowing only two hits with a walk and two K s...cristian Perez knocked home Brewer Hicklen with a sacrifice fly to break a 1-1 tie in the ninth, making a winner out of Janser Lara...Tad Ratliff earned his third save of the series with a scoreless ninth to give manager Scott Thorman his first crown as a skipper. HOME IMPROVEMENT--Last night was KC s ninth win it its last 10 tries in Kauffman Stadium and gave the club a 12-2 mark in the last 14 home affairs...dating back to the All-Star break, the Royals have gone here (.667), tying for third most home wins in the Majors in that span the club had a seasonbest seven-game home win streak snapped in a loss to the White Sox on Wednesday, but have won fourstraight series at The K for the first time since May 13-June 19, 2016, when it won six in a row at at Kauffman this season, the Royals need to win at least one of their final six here to avoid matching the 1998 club (29-51) for fewest home wins in a non-strike year. WALK-OFF WINNER--Last night s ninth inning heroics by Sal Perez was the fifth walk-off win for the Royals this year and the fourth in the last 13 Kauffman Stadium triumphs...it was Perez s second career walk-off home run, getting his first on September 15, 2012 vs. the Angels...last night was the sixth walk-off grand slam in team history, first since Paulo Orlando ended a game with Tampa Bay on July 7, 2015 in the opener of a doubleheader. POWER SURGE--Kansas City clubbed a pair of home runs here last night, including the last swing of the evening with Sal Perez s walk-off slam the Royals have hit 30 roundtrippers since August 22, ranking them third in the American League in that span, behind only the Yankees (34) and Oakland (31) during that span, KC has the second-most extra-base hits (79) in the AL and tops the chart in slugging percentage (.474) it s a huge turnaround from early in the year as KC ranked last in the Majors in homers (78) and 29th in slugging percentage (.368) prior to the All-Star break. DECEPTIVE NUMBERS--Kennedy missed two months of action due to a strained left oblique, but had started to turn his season around prior to his time on the disabled list over his last seven starts, the righty has pitched to a 3.15 ERA (14 ER in 40.0 IP), while holding the opposition to a.207 average (30-for-145) that includes 8.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision on June 12 vs. Cincinnati and 7.0 innings of two-run ball on June 23 in Houston vs. the defending World Series champs however, Kennedy has not won since April 7 in Cleveland, and his 17 consecutive winless starts is the second-longest active streak in the Majors, trailing only Tampa Bay s opener Ryne Stanek, who is winless in all 25 of his career starts dating back to May 26. LACKING SUPPORT--Although Kennedy has allowed 57 runs in innings, the Royals have supported him with just 38 runs, a 3.40 run support average, which is fifth lowest in the AL (min. 100 IP) the Royals have scored one run or fewer with him on the mound in 10 of his 19 starts, including six of his last 10. STELLAR IN THE CENTRAL--He s making his seventh start of the year against an American League Central foe, entering at 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (6 ER in 32.0 IP), with nine walks and 35 strikeouts in those outings his only victory of the year came on April 7 at Cleveland, when tossed 7.0 scoreless frames in a 1-0 triumph his ERA against the Central is second-lowest in baseball (min IP), trailing only Boston s Chris Sale (1.13).
