Giants vs. Royals Tonight opens the first of a home & home session with the Giants this year, as KC will travel to AT&T Park on June for a pair...this marks San Francisco s first visit to Kauffman Stadium since winning Game #7 of the 2014 World Series...as for regular season play, Kansas City has dominated by winning nine of the 12 previous meetings, including a 7-2 mark here...kc has only played once in AT&T (other than the Fall Classic) and that was a 2-1 stop in June, Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/18 KC 4/19 KC SF SF LONE RUN PROMPTS WALK-OFF WIN--The Royals extended their season-high winning streak to four in a row with a 1-0 walk-off victory over the Angels on Sunday, KC s first sweep of the Halos in a 3-game set here since Alcides Escobar ended the pitchers duel with a fly ball single to right for his third hit of the day and scoring pinch runner Raul Mondesi from third base...the triumph was KC s first walk-off victory since last September 27 vs. Minnesota and first of the 1-0 variety since August 21, 2005 also against the Twins...it was the fifth 1-0 walk-off win in team history...ian Kennedy was stellar for the Royals, tossing 8.0 innings allowing only two hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts, while opposing hurler Tyler Skaggs was equally as impressive, fanning nine while allowing four hits and two walks in his 7.0-inning stint...the game came down to the bullpens and while Kelvin Herrera worked a perfect ninth for Kansas City, Salvador Perez opened the bottom of the frame with a single, was run for by Mondesi, the following a stolen base and wild pitch, Esky delivered the game-ending single. STARTING STAFF RANKS #1--Ian Kennedy continued Kansas City s terrific early-season stretch of strong starts by a member of the rotation, tossing 8.0 scoreless in Sunday s win...his performance, combined with the remainder of the rotation that features Danny Duffy, Jason Vargas, Nate Karms and Jason Hammel has combined to post a Major League best 2.31 ERA through the first dozen games, allowing a big league low 19 earned runs in 74.0 innings and an American League low four home runs. WHIT BACK IN THE BIGS--The Royals have recalled utility man Whit Merrifield from Omaha (AAA) to take the spot vacated when pitcher Jake Junis was optioned to after Sunday s game...the 28-year old played in 81 games for Kansas City last year, including 73 starts spanning five differrent positions (second base, leftfield, rightfield, third base and first base)...in nine games this year, he has batted.412 (14-for-34) for Omaha with four doubles, three homers and nine RBI. IAN DEALIN --Sunday s starter Ian Kennedy may not have been involved in the final decision, but his 8.0 shutout innings afforded the Royals the opportunity to walk the Halos off for a fourth straight victory...his 10-K performance was his 13th career double-digit strikeout game, first since July 6 of last year at Toronto...it was the first 8.0-scoreless inning, 10-strikeout game by a Royals hurler since Danny Duffy set a club record with 16 K s over 8.0 shutout frames in Tampa Bay last August 1...on Sunday, Kennedy retired 22 of the first 25 Angels he faced, including the first nine out of the chute. ON BOARD THE CAIN TRAIN--Lorenzo Cain was held hitless on Sunday, but did coax a walk in his second plate appearance marking the 11th time in 12 games that he has reached base this year...his success calculates to a.490 on-base pct., which is tied for third in the Majors behind fellow American Leaguers Robbie Grossman of Minnesota (.512) and the Yankees Chase Headley (.509)...LoCain has already coaxed 11 walks through the first 12 games, good for a second place tie in the A.L., and just 26 freebies shy of his Major League best of 37 set in ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing righthander compiled a during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 will be adorned with the ACE 30 patch. APRIL STREAK STOPPED--Jason saw his six-game unbeaten streak in the month of April end here last Wednesday, in an 8-3 loss to Oakland...the April defeat was Hammel s first since April 22, 2015, when he fell at Pittsburgh, against the A s, he was charged with four runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts...he surrendered a run in the third on Rajai Davis RBI double, then Yonder Alonso s RBI single and a pair of sacrifice flies gave Oakland a 4-0 lead when Hammel departed with two outs in the fifth...the outing was his shortest in the month of April since 2010 as a member of the Rockies, when he worked just 3.0 innings in a 5-3 loss to Arizona on April 26...since 2011, Jason has posted a Major League-best 19 victories in the first month of the season, two more than Felix Hernandez (17), who ranks second. INTERLEAGUE STAR--Hammel has a sparkling Interleague resumé, entering tonight with a 14-7 mark and a 3.90 ERA (71 ER in IP) in 25 career starts (31 appearances) against the opposing league...his.667 winning percentage in Interleague play since 2007 is tied for eighth-best among hurlers with a least 20 decisions...jason won all three of his matchups with the A.L. in 2016, pitching for the Cubs, while he posted an 0.90 ERA (2 ER in 20.0 IP) in those outings.
