4 This & That HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUCK--Kansas City assistant hitting coach, Brian Buck Buchanan, is celebrating his 44th birthday...the Miami, FL native is in his first year with the big league club after coaching in the KC system since he shares this date of birth with such luminaries as L.A. Clipper DeAndre Jordan (29) and fellow baseball brethren CC Sabathia (37), Wei-Yen Chen (32) and former Oriole infielder Mike Bordick (52). PICKY, PICKY, PICKY--Danny Duffy recorded his third pickoff of the season last night when he nabbed Mikie Mahtook at second base in the second inning...it took a replay review to note that Whit Merrifield s foot prevented Mahtook to take the bag at second, but once New York weighed in Duff had his 25th career pickoff...he now just one pick shy of Bruce Chen s total of 26, which are the most in franchise history since pickoffs became an official stat in A BRUISING RECORD--Though the pitch just clipped his jersey sleeve, it was enough for Alex Gordon to take first base for the 10th time this year by virtue of a hit by pitch...he s tied with former teammate, Jarrod Dyson, for second in the American League, just one bruise in back of the Angels Martin Maldonado for the league lead... Gordo has now been plunked 85 times in his career, already a club record, seven more than Mike Macfarlane accrued during his 11 years with Kansas City. ROYALS ON RECORD DEFENSIVE PACE--The Royals played their eighth errorless game in the last 10 in last night s win over Detroit...KC has committed a Major League low 36 errors through the first 94 games of the season, with the next closest club Miami with 41, while the Twins have the second fewest in the American League with 46...the Royals are currently on a pace to shatter the franchise record for fewest errors in a season, with the 162-game club mark of 85 set in the 1981 and 1994 squads had lower error totals of 72 and 80, respectively, but each were recorded in strike-shortened seasons...at the current pace this year, KC would commit just 62 errors. STREAKY SEASON--After dropping the first two games of the Detroit series, the Royals had the prospect of facing Justin Verlander and Michael Fulmer on consecutive nights in order to gain a split, and the club came through with back-to-back wins, exemplifying the streaky nature of the 2017 season...the Royals started the year with a 7-16 month of April that ended with a 9-game losing streak...after bottoming out at 10-20, KC had a 6-1 week from May 8-14, then went into another slide, going over a 3-week stretch...a June 10 win in San Diego jumpstarted the next hot streak, with Kansas City going 18-6 prior to this 3-7 stretch that began in the final series prior to the All-Star break. LAST SERIES OF STAND--With last night s win, Kansas City is 3-4 with a 3-game set with Chicago upcoming...by gaining the split with Detroit, the Royals are now 4-1 with two splits in home sets since the start of June...Kansas City is now on the year in Kauffman Stadium...once this weekend is over, KC will have only 28 home games left on the 2017 docket while 37 are slated for the road, including a make-up game in Yankee Stadium on September 25 (12:05 KC time) from a May 25 rainout in the Bronx. A PAIR OF BIG FLIES--Eric Hosmer and Whit Merrifield each went deep last night, upping KC s season total to 112, the most ever in team history through 94 games... the club standard for homers in a season is 168 set during the 1987 campaign, with this year s unit is currently on a pace to shatter that mark with 193 roundtrippers. THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer was in the middle of last night s attack, going 2-for-3 with his 14th home run, three runs scored and a pair of RBI...he has hit at a.365 clip (23-for-63) during July with a OPS...after a.225 month of April that included a.292 OBA and.281 slug., Hoz has hit.344 with a.401 on-base and.559 slugging pct. since May 1 with 93 hits and 13 home runs...only the Rockies Charlie Blackmon with 98 hits and 16 homers has better number since May 1. MOOSE ON RECORD PACE--Mike Moustakas has gone 6-for-12 in the last three games, including a 3-hit effort last night, but he has not homered in his last nine games, matching his longest dinger dry spell of the season...despite the drought he continues to rank sixth in the A.L. home run race with 25 blasts...moose has already blown past his personal single-season best of 22 from 2015 and hit three more home runs prior to the All-Star break than any Royal in history, breaking Jermaine Dye s mark of 22 in he remains on a pace that would shatter Kansas City s long-standing club record of 36 roundtrippers hit by Steve Balboni during the 1985 season...his 25 home runs to this point translate to 43 over the remainder of the campaign. THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER--Reliever Peter Moylan made his 44th relief appearance of the year on Wednesday night retiring the only man he faced with a pair of runners aboard...it was the 37th time he has not allowed an earned run this year...he has inherited more runners than any reliever in the Majors (41) and during the month of July, Moylo is one of three big league relievers to inherit nine runners and have none score...the 38-year old from Australia, has been nothing short of spectacular since May 24, allowing just two earned runs in a total of 18.0 innings, spanning 23 appearances, for a 1.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts and an opponents batting average of.129 (8-for-62). ESKY CONTINUES TO IMPRESS--Alcides Escobar had a pair of hits and drove home three in last night s win...since June 10, he has batted at a.333 clip (43-for-129) spanning 34 games and by no coincidence the club has picked it up going in that stretch...esky was hitting.178 entering play on June 10, but has since upped his season average 56 points to its current.234 mark...he s made a club-record 265 consecutive starts at shortstop dating back to September 26, 2015, the longest active streak in the Majors, according to the Elias Sports Bureau...the last MLB team to have the same starting SS in that many consecutive games was the Orioles, who had Miguel Tejada as their starting shortstop in 284 games from April 4, 2004 through August 20, should Esky get to 285, he will have the longest such streak since Cal Ripken started 2,216 consecutive games at SS for the Orioles from 1982 to DUPE IS KC S SECRET WEAPON--Replay specialist and team eagle eye Bill Duplissea had his first replay review since July 3 when he was called upon in the second inning last night to see if Danny Duffy did in fact pick Mikie Mahtook off second base, a call that was overturned to KC s favor after review...arguably the best in the business, Duper is 15-for-20 for a 75% success rate, which tops the Majors...Duplissea also requested a Crew Chief review of Danny Espinosa s home run on June 16 in Anaheim that was flipped into a foul ball upon review, but Dupe does not receive statistical credit for a Crew Chief review...bill closed 2016 as the best in baseball at his craft with a 69.2% success rate, making good on 27 of 39 challenges, with the Mets next at 67.7% (21-for-31). AT THE HELM--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his seventh full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, he enters tonight one game below.500 at , which is still an accomplishment considering he had a mark in his first two+ seasons in charge, but is since (.536)...his win total has shattered Whitey Herzog s previous team mark of 410 wins ( )...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers is games (2,151) and wins (1,053)...his postseason record of 22-9 represents a.710 winning pct., which is tops among all managers who have been at the helm for at least 20 postseason games...he s also 2-0 in managing the American League All-Star team, winning in both Cincinnati ( 15) and San Diego ( 16), the last two times the home field advantage was determined by the All-Star outcome...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers ( )...he compiled a record with the Brew Crew including a mark in his last two seasons...yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox s big league staff ( ). vs. White Sox (2017) vs. White Sox (career) At Home (career) Shields (career) Pelfrey (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Bonifacio Burns Butera Cain Escobar Gordon Hosmer Merrifield Moss Moustakas Perez Torres Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
