JUNE 5/30-2 NCAA Regionals 6-8 NCAA Super Regionals College World Series Series History: 3-0 vs. Canisius Today s Probable Starter: RHP Ryan Butler (2011: 0-1, 5.87 ERA, 10 K, 6 BB) Redshirt junior Ryan Butler will make his first appearance in almost three years, due to injury, after going 0-1 with a 5.87 ERA in 2011 with Marshall. Butler made three starts along with four relief appearances for the Thundering Herd, playing on the same 2011 team with current 49er Hunter May. Butler recorded 10 strikeouts while walking six in his 15.1 innings of work. The Charlotte native and product of Ardrey Kell High School sat out during his time at Northwest Florida State before transferring to Charlotte. Butler was drafted in the 16th Round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees, before joining the 49ers. Series Rotation vs. Canisius: Saturday: RHP Corey Roberts (2013: 0-1, 2.29) vs. RHP Rohn Pierce (1-0, 0.00 ERA) Sunday: RHP Brock Hudgens (2013: 7-1, 2.77) vs. RHP Devon Stewart (0-1, ERA) Racking Up the Wins Charlotte was the winningest Atlantic 10 Conference program in its eight-year stint in the league ( ). The 49ers won back-to-back regular-season titles twice in the A-10 ( & ), giving Charlotte a trio of consecutive titles in program history (Metro Champions ). The back-to-back league tournament titles in 2007 & 2008 were a first in program history. Charlotte captured the regular-season league title five times in eight years of A-10 membership. Charlotte also won Metro Conference Regular Season titles in 1994 and 1995, capturing a tournament title in Coaching & Program Milestones April 3, 2013 against Asheville, Charlotte head coach Loren Hibbs earned his 650th career win. The 49ers skipper is in his 21st season in charge of the program, with an average of over 30 wins per season. He is the only head coach at Charlotte to take the program to the NCAA tournament, which he has done five times. He is a major part of the program reaching the 1,000-win mark, which it did on February 25, 2013 at home against Marshall. Hibbs credited the program s 334 letterwinners in 35 seasons for the program s success. Start Me up Charlotte scored first in 33 games last season, winning 28 of those contests. Since 2006, the 49ers are when scoring first and when scoring in the first inning, including an 18-2 mark last year. The Niners have also outscored opponents in the first inning in that time. Dandy Debut Freshman Third Baseman Zach Jarrett made an impressive collegiate debut in the Niners season-opener at High Point on Tuesday. The Hickory, N.C. native went 4-for-6 with a double, three singles and a RBI in the 4-3, 11-inning loss. Jarrett s four hits were consecutively starting with a one-out double in the first followed by his three singles in the third, fifth and seventh. Zach is the son of NASCAR legend Dale Jarrett and the grandson of Ned. Walk Them Off Charlotte won six home games in walk-off fashion in 2013, The winning hits came from six different players. For the first time in school history, Charlotte passed the 35,000-fan mark, bringing in 39,604 in That total landed Charlotte at 49th-best attendance in It is a school-record fourth-straight season that the 49ers have eclipsed 30,000 fans per season. The 49ers broke the 2010 attendance record (999 per game or 33,969 fans) by averaging 1,043 per contest (for 34,440 fans) in 33 home games in Charlotte averaged 1,064 fans per game in 2012 to total more than 30,000 fans. Charlotte averaged 990 fans per game in No Place Like Home The 49ers finished at home in 2013, the 16th season in 35 years of play with 20 home wins, and the seventh 20-win season in the last eight years. The 29 home wins tied the school record, after previously tying the mark in 2010, which matched the 1998 mark. Charlotte recently recorded 20+ home victories in a program-record six straight ( ) seasons. The Niners are (.722) in 216 games since the park reopened on March 30, The 2014 senior class has a (66.0%) home record since Charlotte has a 40-9 series record in home series of three or more games. Trophy Case Junior Brad Elwood was named the lone 49er on the 2014 Conference USA Preseason Baseball team. Elwood is Charlotte s returning batting leader (.343), collecting 80 hits last season, tying for second overall in the conference. He was the third-toughest player in the NCAA to strikeout, with just 10 strikeouts in 233 at bats for the season. He was also named All-Tournament last season, the only returning 49er on that squad. Corbin Shive hit his first career home run in the NCAA Regional in Tempe, Ariz. and earned NCAA All-Regional, the eighth person at Charlotte to earn an All-NCAA Regional honor. He brings a 37-game active streak of reaching base safely, carrying that over from the end of the 2012 season, his last action after a year off due to injury. Welcome Back Charlotte returns one weekend starter and three position players from last season s conference-championship season. The draft took two promising prospects and graduation grabbed another starting pitcher and half of the eight position players. The 49ers reload for their foray into Conference USA by getting one player back from season-long injury (Corbin Shive), two more that had redshirt seasons (Matt Creech and Des Roberts) and the addition of talented freshmen and transfers to make up the 2014 edition. The bullpen is mostly intact, with nine of the 13 saves from last year and nearly 83% of the relief innings pitched last season. A Family Affair, Part One (Oh, Brother...) Charlotte redshirt junior catcher Pat Raley will be joined by his younger brother Danny this season, giving Charlotte its seventh set of brothers to play for the program. The Raleys are the fourth pair of brothers to play on the same team, which includes two pairs of identical twins. In addition to Jason and Kevin Hill playing for Charlotte together in 1998, a third Hill brother,travis, joined the 49ers in 2002, while Jason was an assistant coach with the team at that time. Other brothers to play for the Niners, but not together, are Brion ( ) and Zach ( ) Treadway, Rob ( ) and Jim (2010) Lyerly, and Spencer ( ) and Ross ( ) Steedley. The first legacy player to hit the field for Charlotte was Zack Dunn, who played for the 49ers from His father, Mark, was on Charlotte s second team and played from The elder Dunn was a three-time letterwinner for the 49ers, collecting 73 hits and driving in 47 runs at Charlotte from Both father and son got a hit in their first collegiate game, both at home, nearly 29 years apart to the day. Mark s hit came on March 7, 1980 against Wake Forest, with Zack getting a hit on March 9, 2009 versus Furman. This season, freshman Brandon Vogler starts his 49ers career. His father, Mark, led the first-ever team in batting average, hits, RBI and home runs. He was the first player in school history named to an All-Conference team, earning All-Sun Belt Conference in Both the elder Vogler and the elder Dunn were teammates on the 1980 and 1981 teams.

Now in his 22nd season, head coach Loren Hibbs continues to extend his mark as the all-time winningest coach in the program s history. The 2009 season opener was his 900th career game as the Niner skipper. He won number 600 in the first game of the road series at Massachusetts April 29, He is signed through the 2015 season. Averaging better than 31 wins per season over his 20-plus years as head coach at Charlotte, Loren Hibbs enters 2014 ranked 44th in the NCAA for wins among active coaches. With 40 or more wins in four of the past seven seasons, 35 wins in six of the last eight seasons and 30 or more wins in eight of the past nine, Charlotte has risen to new heights under his direction. The 49ers have claimed victory against a team ranked No. 7 or higher in four-straight seasons ( ). The Niners have either been in the Top 25 or have received votes in seven of the past eight seasons, reaching a program-high rank of No. 18 in Hibbs has been named Coach of the Year in all three conference affiliations (Metro, 94; Conference USA, 98; and Atlantic 10, 07) in a Charlotte uniform. In 2013, junior Justin Seager was named the program s fourth Player of the Year after leading the league in doubles, third in batting average and on-base percentage, second in runs scored, fourth in hits and tying for seventh in RBI. Charlotte tied the school record with 29 home wins on its way to its seventh league title (the fifth in a seven-year span).

C-USA Championship Format The 2014 Conference USA Championship will return to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the fourth time in the league s history. Southern Miss also hosted the 2009, 2005 and 1996 C-USA Championships at Pete Taylor Park. The Championship will feature the top eight teams in regular-season league play and the format returns to two double-elimination brackets, with a single-elimination championship game.
