STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. 1 February 2016
By Rick Marinelli, Director Hello Storm Riders! I hope you were able to ride some on those 60 degrees days we had at the end of January. You can't beat that! Just remember, in a few months we will wish it was in the 60 s. I hope you all will sign up and pay your $20 for each book to participate in the Border Patrol and the Haunted Rides. There will be a prize for the winner of each ride to be drawn at the Christmas party on December 3, Fort Thunder is having some great sales, trying to get rid of some stuff to make room for all the spring merchandise coming in. Last weekend they had 60% off on men and women s boots that were in stock. Best price anywhere! The only way you can find out about their great deals is to go in to the Fort or sign up for their text alerts. All you have to do is send a text from your cell phone to That is pretty easy. I appreciate all the suggestion on the survey we handed out at the last chapter meeting, we will look at them at the officers meeting and give you some feedback. This is your chapter and we want to have activities that our membership wants. If it wasn't for you there would be no Storm Riders Chapter Oklahoma Territory. That s all for now. Keep the rubber side down and the painted side up. 3 Sweet Cheeks Thingamabob by Karen Hale, Activities Officer - From Your Computer :. See you on the road, Sweet Cheeks Border Patrol and Haunted Hogs Rides Storm Riders will be in the wind more than ever this year, thanks to two new events. If there is no dinner ride and you want to go riding, just look in your Border Patrol or Haunted Hogs fliers, and you will find plenty of riding destinations at your fingertips, whenever you feel the need for wind therapy. Below is all the info you need to be a member of the Border Patrol. Cost is $20.00 per participant. Ride begins on February 1, 2016 and ends on November 30, There are eleven Oklahoma border towns to be visited. Each stop must be recorded with a picture of you and your bike at any location in the specified town. Picture can be at the city hall, police station, library, post office, sign entering /exiting the town or any other sign that designates the town s name. Winner will be drawn at the Christmas Party on December 3, Turn in completed ride booklets to Moe Jones by Nov. 30th. Haunted Hogs rules are similar. Cost is $20 per participant Destinations are haunted buildings throughout Oklahoma. Books must be turned in by the October chapter meeting. The winner will be announced at the Halloween Party. The more participation the more the prize money to be awarded! And above all Ride safe and have FUN!! 3
by Jerry Jarman, Safety Officer As the incoming Safety Officer I have a tough act to follow. Lindell Smith has kept us safe not only by reminding us of the habits we need to maintain, but by practicing what he teaches in his riding. Thank You Lindell, for your dedication to the safety of the Storm Riders and their guests! Last year I saw a video that showed how well a single motorcycle can blend in with the surroundings and how its speed can t be judged as well as a car s. The video suggested performing a little wobble and showed how it helped break up the camouflaged bike which made it more visible. I actually placed the procedure into practice when I felt like I wasn t being seen by a vehicle pulling out from a side street. On Cover your brake as you normally would, if you see the front wheels still rolling or if you just get that feeling, give it a wobble to be seen. The sun may be shining but it can be deceiving, so check the temperature and a wind chill chart, layer up and it never hurts to throw an extra layer in your saddle bags. We have had a couple of ice storms and a little snow, so the sand trucks have been out. It is even more important to make a mental note to watch for sand at intersections. Sand can be as slick as oil spots when braking or accelerating, so brake early and ease into the throttle at intersections. When you encounter sand or other traction hazards during normal riding keep a steady pace with no sudden steering or braking and remain in the same gear until clear of the hazard. (continued on p. 10) Chapter Meeting, January 4
STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. February 2016 Mystery Ride to Jimmy s Round-Up, January 1 We started at OnCue on S.W. 89 and Penn. We were very busy before the ride, taking up money for members updating their memberships and waivers being signed by others, and also the mileage being verified by all who is participating in the mileage contest. This ride, being New Years Day, had a great turnout. We had 31 bikes and 52 people total. The ride was 34 miles. We took a ride around Lake Stanley Draper, then proceeded to the restaurant on S.W. 59th. Some stated that the 34 miles was great, because they began to get cold towards the end. Weather was great. 34 degrees and sunny with light winds. After getting to the restaurant, every- We split into 3 groups, with no mid road captains, only leads and sweeps. Thanks to road cap- tains Jerry Jarman, Jerry Hines, Gene Dutton, Stan Kilmer and Darrell Howard. one was seated within 10 minutes, and everyone enjoyed good food and fellowship, and just being part of the Storm Rider family. Jimmy told me he enjoyed our group very much and hopes to get another shot at us. 5
Maintenance Notes Customization by Kiel Morgan, Service Manager, Fort Thunder Harley-Davidson Welcome back readers and riders. Kiel here, from Fort Thunder Harley-Davidson. What is meant by custom? I ve been asked this question and contemplated the answer for years. If you ask this question in your circle of friends you will probably get as many different answers as there are people. After much deliberation, simply put, custom is anything that you have done to your bike to make it your own. Let that sink in for a minute, custom is ANYTHING you have done to make it your own. We currently live in a world filled with big wheel baggers, chopped up sporties and FXR s making a huge comeback. These are the bikes that a lot of people refer to or think of when they talk about custom bikes. My argument here is why does a bike have to be completely transformed in order to be considered a custom? If you were to purchase a brand new bike off the sales floor and change out the grips, haven t you made it your own? Isn t it YOUR custom? I m not saying there won t be others like it. What I am saying is that you changed something to make it yours. Maybe you changed the grips to fit your hand or style better, or ramped up the engine for extra power. Whatever the case may be, you turned that bike into your own. When it comes to customization, the possibilities are endless. Here at the shop we have thousands of pages of cosmetic and mechanical parts to interchange or add, to make a bike your custom motorcycle. We can do the big front wheel or the big inch engine and just about everything in between with few limitations. I ll touch on those a bit a later. The highest compliment I ever receive in this industry is when a customer brings me his or her bike with a budget and an idea. It truly is an awesome experience every single time, to deliver a customer s dream bike to him. I have been fortunate enough to have that opportunity on multiple occasions, both inside and outside a dealership setting, and I ll tell you what, it NEVER gets old. Seeing the reaction on a customer s face is truly what makes working in this industry worth it. Trust me, it s not the pay and the endless hours we work during the peak riding season. We do it because we truly love our jobs!!! is an amazing experience. It is where I have spent the majority of my career both in St. Louis, and now here in Oklahoma. As I said earlier, there are some limitations on what we can accomplish or are willing to do within the dealership. It s not that we can t do it, it s that we are not set up to do it. It just isn t our niche. This is where guys like Phil and the The truth is, there isn t a competition between us. it. Recently I got the chance to check out the Black Label shop and meet Phil and his crew. I ll be the first to tell you they are building/ customizing some amazing machines (not just Harley-Davidsons) over there.. Whether you are wanting some new grips, you ve been thinking about adding some serious horsepower to your scoot, or going for the big wheel bagger look, it s winter, or so they tell me (it is currently 70 degrees and sunny as I type this), and that means it s the perfect time to make some changes. 6 (continued on p. 10)
