1 STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. April 2015 Friendship goes way beyond riding together. These Storm Riders recently spent their vacation together on a 7-day cruise in the Caribbean. 1

2 By Rick Marinelli, Director Hello Storm Riders! Spring is here and it is time to uncover your bikes, unplug the battery tender, check the oil and tire pressure. Then call the best Harley Davidson service department in the United States, our sponsoring dealer, Fort Thunder Harley-Davidson. They can make you an appointment to have your bike inspected to make sure it is ready to ride. Who knows, they might even wash it so you don't have to. Please keep Pam Bacon, who works in finance at Fort Thunder, and her daughter Taydem in your thoughts and prayers. They lost a husband and a dad on March 15th, along with two neighbors, due to a motorcycle accident where a young driver just made a simple mistake. This time of year is very hard on bikers. There will be more accidents in the next two months than the rest of the year, due to cages just not paying attention. So please be safe and pay attention to the cars out there. When I am riding on two lane roads and a car is coming toward me, I try to see the driver s head position. If he dips a shoulder or his head is angled to their right he is not paying attention, and I bet he or she does not see you. There is a lot of good information on the web. The one I like is msgroup.org. They have 100's of tips and videos to read and watch. You can print them to hand them out to your riding buddies. Storm Riders is a very active chapter. Every one of you puts thousands of miles on your bikes riding with the chapter or just riding with your friends. I pray every time I hear about a wreck it is not one of the Storm Riders. I consider each and everyone of you as a friend so please be safe out there and ride and have fun. Until next time, I hope to see you on a ride and remember to keep the rubber side down ride and have fun. 3 Bear Tracks by Jeff Spitzer, Activities Officer I hope this finds all our members in good health, and their scoots ready to maximize riding weather. I've come to feel a bit sorry for Sportster riders this time of year. It's nearly impossible to carry a change of shirt & socks, leathers, a light jacket, clear eye protection, rain gear and a towel; all things that could quite possibly be used in a single day of riding in Oklahoma weather from March 1st to June 30th... Hang in there Sporty riders! With warmer weather comes an opportunity to start "stretching out" our chapter rides, culminating with the 2015 Rooster Run, June 4-7. This year's Run is a 1,200-mile trek through parts of three states. Details, including what hotels to call for reservations are below. They can also be found in the weekly Storm Riders' Activities e-newsletter, and will continue to be posted there through the May 31st issue. If you are a current (dues paid) chapter member, and do not get the weekly e-newsletter in your Inbox, please check your junk/ spam folder and add " to your contacts. That's it for now. 4 Dinner Ride to Giuseppi s, Marlowe, March 6 We had a great weather day to ride to Giuseppi s in Marlow, which, I think, is one of those little hidden restaurant gems in Oklahoma. We had a good turnout with 14 bikes and 18 people. After we navigated out of the sandy streets of Moore, we headed off and rode south through Blanchard, on Hiway 76 to one of my favorite little roads, 74b, to 74, south to Purcell for a stop. Then we turned onto Highway 29 into Marlow. What a great way to spend a nice Saturday: a fun ride, with friends and good food. Special thanks to our head road captain, Moe Jones for running sweep, and to Chuck Wheeler for taking good care of the mid duties. Both did a great job. 4

5 Safety Briefs by Lindell Smith, Safety Officer YOUR RIDING TEMPERATURE Hello, Storm Riders. Hope each of you are well and able to get out and ride. We've had some excellent days to ride recently and there are more to come. So get out in the wind and enjoy. Since we are in the Spring season, I thought this article would be appropriate. Enjoy and have a great month! Ever wonder what the temperature of your ride really feels like? As soon as you start moving through the air on a motorcycle, the temperature you experience and what you see on a thermometer are different. So different, that once you hit 30 mph, the temperature you're experiencing is a full 12 degrees less than what you see on the bank clock. After 30 mph, you're riding temperature continues to decrease 2 degrees for every 10 mph. So, by the time you reach 70 mph, your riding temperature is a full 20 degrees less than what you will see on the thermometer. Let's say you step outside and see that it's a mild and beautiful morning at 50 degrees. While your clothing may keep you warm enough while standing in that 50 degrees, if you start riding the open road and approach 70 mph, it will feel like 30 degrees to you. Safely riding a motorcycle includes managing and preparing for your riding temperature, the one you'll really experience on the open road. The best way to do this is dress in, and carry extra layers of clothing on the motorcycle, including gloves. Having a jacket, whether leather or synthetic, is your first need. Along with it, you'll want at least one and perhaps two other items of long-sleeve upper-body accessory wear. You'll want these layers to keep you warm when it's cold and you can take them off when it warms up. You'll find the same to be true with gloves. A good pair of over-the -wrist gloves are good for early morning and evening riding. But during the day, a lighter pair that are wrist length are fine. Also, you need leather chaps and / or gators for your legs, which are easy to remove as it warms up. What would be wrong, you might wonder, with forgoing layers and just wearing a heavy nonlayered jacket, and over the wrist gloves throughout the day of riding? This could be dangerous for two reasons. For one, you might become too warm during the day and get woozy while riding. Second, wearing a heavy non-layered jacket when it's 30 degrees will certainly keep you warm but could lead to sweating inside the jacket later on. When you stop for gas or a break, you'll no longer be acclimated for the weather and probably be cold when you start riding again, if your clothing is a little wet. Overall, having 2-3 options for your upper body, two pair of gloves and 1 pair of chaps or gators for your legs will help you prepare for riding. Since your riding temperature and ambient temperature differ as your riding speed increases and, the temperature throughout the day will change, these layers will make the difference in your enjoyment and keep you safely riding instead of being preoccupied by discomfort. Remembering your riding temperature is easy: 12 degrees less at 30 mph, 2 degrees for every 10 mph thereafter. Plan ahead enjoy the ride. Ride Safe, Ride Often and Repeat! 6 Leather and Lace Hello Everyone! I hope you all have had a chance to get out and rack up some miles during this phenomenal weather! Speaking of weather, while we've had some beautiful days, it's a good idea to be sure and have supplies ready for Storm Season. Bear and I have a weather radio, some bottled water, and we know that our most interior room is our pantry (coincidentally, that's also where the wine is). The LOH Overnighter is almost upon us and we're going to have a great ride to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tulsa. Rooms are still available at the Holiday Inn Express. To make a reservation call: and ask for the Ladies of Harley rooms. They offer complimentary hot breakfast and they run a shuttle to the Hard Rock, so it's just going to be a great time of fun, sisterhood (men, you're welcome also and we won't call you sisters), and time away (even if only for one night). As the season heats up, we'll soon be offering nonriding activities, so be on the lookout for those. As always, I welcome any ideas or suggestions! Have a great month! Chapter Meeting March
