1 STORM RIDERS CHAPTER, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY H.O.G. Storm Riders know how to keep cool and party! Thanks to Christina Tomlin and Brent Hopkins for hosting the 6th annual Swimming of the Hogs, July 22, September/October 2017

2 The Joker s Rant by Jerry Hines, Director Greetings, Storm Riders! Well, we are smack dab in the middle of riding season, and we have had some great weather. Before I had a motorcycle, I always tried to find the quickest, most direct way to go somewhere. That was my life driving. It was the efficient and practical thing to do. But on a bike, I am willing to go 100 miles to grab stuff I could have gotten in my neighborhood. When out on the road I find things I never knew existed, especially when making the stops in the Oklahoma Oddities book. If you haven t picked up one of the books I would recommend talking to one of our HOG officers and getting one. They are $20 per book. Just take a picture of you and your bike at 15 of the stops and you could win some big money. Here s where this little book is really useful. You want to go riding, but don t really have a destination in mind. This book will give you lots of good ideas. I ll tell my wife, I m just going out for a quick ride, then return several hours later. I have been able to see UFO s, Oil Rigs on Main Street, as well as life-size dinosaurs made from scrap. Next time you are visiting our sponsoring dealership, Fort Thunder Harley-Davidson, stop by and welcome our new service manager, Victoria Mitchell. She is a former instructor at the H-D Mechanics Institute. I m sure she will do a super job taking care of our bikes. See you on the road! Lets put a smile on that face The Joker Jerry Hines Victoria Mitchell, Service Manager, FTHD Director: Hjerry956@gmail.com Assistant Director Ray Sarchet rsarchet2@cox.net Secretary: Denise Jones djones1989@yahoo.com Treasurer Darrell Howard Darrell_howard@att.net Membership Officer: Debbie Bergman debbieb1609@gmail.com Activities Officer Karen Hale khale72@cox.net Safety Officer: Jerry Jarmanjerry.jarman@gmail.com Ladies Of Harley Officer Diane Loser dilos5408@att.net RC: Linda Webster linwebs@gmail.com Webmaster: Ray Sarchet rsarchet2@cox.net Photographers: Diane Loser dilos5408@att.net Lynn Cavin okcpony@swbell.net Head Road Captain: Moe Jone Road Captains: Barry Dethloff dethloff07@gmail.com Michael Hale mbhale72@cox.net Gary Hanson ezrider@att.net Ray Hunnicutt gitarpikr@yahoo.com Jerry Jarman jerry.jarman@gmail.com Denise Jones djones1989@yahoo.com skilmer@ou.edu Jina Myers tiabella128@gmail.com Brad Nelson kj0w@sbcglobal.net John Nicholas John_nicholas@att.net Colleen Smith pickles2832@yahoo.com Linda Webster linwebs@gmail.com 2

3 by Jerry Jarman, Safety Officer Blind Spots When you saw this title, I know the first thing you thought of, was riding behind a vehicle on their left or right and checking to see if you can see the driver in their mirror. I used to think the same thing when I heard the phrase. Blind spots, to me, are anything that blocks your vison or any other vehicle from seeing you, and that means not just the one right in front of you. In the recent past, I have seen many near misses, where the rider was passing a vehicle while approaching an intersection. Either a car was making a left turn or was just crossing straight through the intersection. I realized that the car actually couldn t see the bike, because the rider was in a blind spot. In each instance, the car had plenty of time to clear the vehicles they could see, but then a bike would suddenly appear to come out of nowhere. Another time a truck was in a right hand turn lane. The rider s line of sight was blocked, and he couldn t see that there was a car on the other side of the truck. Of course, the car couldn t see the bike. Well you guessed it. The car makes a left turn, crossing two lanes of traffic--another near miss. I had to praise the rider in this instance. I saw him tap on his brake and make a quick evasive maneuver (a high speed weave) One Sunday I decided to just take off and ride around the back streets of the metro area to see how many things I could find that created a blind spot. The many obstacles I saw ranged from small bushes to trees, signs of all kinds, and fences. You wouldn t think of a telephone pole as being a blind spot, but at the right angle and distance, a bike can be completely hidden. Even a neon garage sale sign on a slight uphill grade completely blocked a car parked in a drive way. My experiment really opened my eyes. I now ride looking for all kinds of blind spots, not just the ones that are created by vehicles. I have been told by OHP officers that, during an accident investigation, the most common thing a driver says, is that he or she did not see the motorcycle. So, hopefully now, when you hear the phrase blind spot you will think of any obstacle that creates an instance where you can t see or be seen, not just of the one that is the most popular. Ride Often and Ride Safe You really don t want to miss this rally Register at where you will find information about lodging as well as the rally schedule. Preregistration ends September

September/October 2017 Dinner Ride to Farmer s Daughter s Market, Tecumseh August 5 On a beautiful August morning, twenty two members and three guests left Fort Thunder on a mystery ride. Winding our way south to Highway 9, we rode east to Hwy 102 south, then followed Hwy 59b to Hwy 177, where we rode north 5 into Tecumseh, and Farmer s Daughter s Market. We left with full bellies and determination to return to this out-of-the-way gem soon.

8 Leather and Lace Hello, Lady Storm Riders! Thank you to Road Captains, Jina, Colleen, Barry, and Wayne, for making it a safe trip to Canyon, Texas for the LOH overnighter, where we attended the musical, Texas, in Palo Duro Canyon, just south of Amarillo, Texas. Our evening began with a chuck wagon dinner that was very tasty. Then we took a short walk to the beautiful amphitheater, where we were entertained by Comanche dancers. The house was full, as this was the last show of the season. Afterwards, they always shoot off fireworks. Since their remaining fireworks could not be stored until next year, they shot all of them off for us! Fall is right around the corner and we have some fun activities planned. It s been a great summer, but I m looking forward to cooler weather. We have a painting on wood class on Sept 11 th, at Oliveto s. We will be painting a fall display for the front porch or front door. The class is limited to 15 spots and we now have 11 signed up. If you want to attend, go to the Ladies of Harley Facebook page for information. Horseback riding is Donation Items for Kids Korral Laundry detergent dryer sheets disinfecting wipes hand soap cleaning supplies paper plates, cups, forks, paper towels bathroom tissue hand sanitizer movies PG, PG13, G planned for November 5 th, and a ladies gun class and shooting competition is coming up. Check later for dates and times. Thank you to all who donated toiletries to the Blue Star Moms, who will send them to our troops overseas. Some items will also be going to the VA Hospital. Our outreach for the fall is The Toby Keith Foundation, Kids Korral. Household items will be collected until the October chapter meeting. Hope to see all you ladies at the next LOH meeting at Western Sizzlin in Moore, September 26 th at 6:30. I hope you are enjoying the activities being planned. I always welcome additional ideas that you may have for future activities. Love you guys! Your LOH officer, Diane Loser (Mermaid) 8
