2 2B DALHART TEXAN, August 25, 2017 Friday edition Golden Wolves making changes on offense and defense The Dalhart Golden Wolves will be making changes on both offense and defense as they look to make a trip to the playoffs for the third straight year under head coach Joey Read. The Wolves have five starters returning on offense and seven starters returning on defense. Junior Ryan Bornemeier will be the starting quarterback for the second straight season. Seniors Kody Monroe, Frank Gallegos, and Ryan Ortiz and junior Carson Smith also started on the offense last season. On defense, Bornemeier will be returning as a starter in the secondary. Linebackers Smith, Ethan Sneller, and Christian Melendez also started last season, as did defensive linemen Ortiz, Kole Barrow, and Brendan Herring. Barrow is a senior while the others are all juniors. Read said that the team will be looking to pass the ball much more this season, and will mainly run a version of the wing-t out of the shotgun formation. Most of the time there will only be one running back along with three See WOLVES, page 3B FOOLL S BACK Pictured above, the 2017 Dalhart Golden Wolves varsity football team. 3 Friday edition Wolves making changes Con t from Page 2B DALHART TEXAN, August 25, B wide receivers and a tight end as the Wolves look to open things up somewhat. Kiel Kitchens is returning to Dalhart to be the offensive coordinator this season. Several starters for the Wolves graduated last spring, so some players who are moving up from JV will need to step up and contribute. Darwin Alvarez will be the starting running back this season and will be in the backfield by himself much of the time, and Read expects him to make a big contribution this year. LaDaryl Smith, Jaden Massey, and Kevin Alvarado were also mentioned by Read as being some of his key newcomers this season. The defense is changing up as well. Last year the Wolves usually used just three linemen, but will switch to a this year to get a fourth lineman in place to help with the run. The defense is looking a lot better. Read said, adding that having that fourth lineman should make them more physical. The Wolves were able to shut down the Stratford running attack in the first scrimmage of the season. D.J. Wright is returning for his third season as defensive coordinator. The Wolves will open up the regular season with a home game against Borger on Sept. 1. After that they will go on the road for three straight away games at Spearman, River Road, and then drive all the way down to Vernon for a non-district game. coming against Friona will be on Sept. 29, followed by the annual Pink-Out game on Oct. 6 against Pampa. Dalhart will have an open date after the Pampa game, and then district play will start. The Wolves will play at Bushland on Oct. 20, and then take on Denver City at home for a rare Saturday game on Oct. 28. That game had to be moved to Saturday due to a lack of officials in this area and will begin at 4 pm. Dalhart will take another long road trip to Brownfield on Nov. 3, and then will close out the regular season at home against Perryton on Nov. 10. That final home game will also be Senior Night. The Wolves will be looking to be competitive during district play and add the playoffs to their schedule for the third year in a row. Bill Kelly Staff Photo Lady Wolves look to make another playoff trip The Dalhart Lady Wolves have been playing volleyball for a couple of weeks now, and have already brought home some hardware with a runner-up finish in the Silver Bracket of the Monahans Tournament. They will be looking to build on that and return to the playoffs yet again as the season continues. Key players who are coming back this year include seniors Sidney Fahnert, Gracie King, and Savanna Watson, and juniors Brittany Johnson and Lexi Posey. Fahnert is a middle blocker for the team, King and Johnson are outside hitters, Posey is one of the team s main setters, and Watson is a defensive specialist. Head coach Kira Satterfield will be looking for players to fill some major spots from last year s team, as the Lady Wolves had several players graduate. Three seniors, Mikah Barton, Savannah Renshaw, and Anzleigh Swecker will hopefully help out in that regard, along with juniors Tabby Pedraza, Madison Todd, and Konnor White. The varsity roster is still fluctuating, and Cali Rutherford, Hannah Holmes, and Cristal Davila could all see time on varsity by the end of the season. Davila and Holmes will be travelling with the varsity to the Frenship Tournament this weekend. Everyone on the team will need to contribute for the Lady Wolves to make it to the playoffs again. It will take a team effort to be successful because we are in a really tough district with the defending state champs (Bushland Lady Falcons). Satterfield said. Satterfield also pointed out that the schedule is tough. Every team we play on our schedule was in the playoffs with the exception of two teams and they are from larger classifications, said Satterfield. So we have to pull together and figure out our roles pretty quick. See WOLVES, page 5B The 2017 Dalhart High 9th Grade volleyball team with coach Alex Stice. Bill Kelly Staff Photo ARE YOU READY? 5 Friday edition DALHART TEXAN, August 25, B Wolves look to Con t from Page 4B One advantage over last year is a larger number of home games. Last season, the Lady Wolves didn t play at home until district action had started in October. Dalhart has already had two home games this season, and will have five more home games before it s all over. The Lady Wolves will hopefully use momentum from some of those home games to win a few district games on the road as well and make another trip to the playoffs. 6 6B DALHART TEXAN, August 25, 2017 Friday edition DXC getting ready for another strong year The Dalhart High cross-country teams (DXC) will be looking to repeat the successes of the past several years as they head into the 2017 season. The Lady Wolves had one of the most successful seasons in their history last year as they won eight straight meets, including regional and district. They made their sixth straight trip to state as well as winning one of the most prestigious meets in the nation as they won their division in the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree, which is basically the equivalent of winning the Oklahoma state championship. Only two veterans from last year s varsity team remain however, as three runners graduated and two others have chosen to focus on other activities this year. Yareth Lozano and Maly Delgado will lead the Lady Wolves as they attempt to defend their district and regional titles. Summer Simmons also spent time on varsity last year before winning the JV individual district title and will move up to varsity this year. Bailey Dettle and Caroline Varela are two other runners from last year s JV squad who will compete for a spot on varsity, as will freshmen Ariana Mendoza, Claudia Taylor, Kaeona Marquez, and Cristina Valencia. Kimberly Stilwell will provide senior leadership whether she is on varsity or JV. For the boys, senior Aaron Hembree will be leading the way after becoming just the third Dalhart male runner to make it to state as an individual. Hembree has been working hard all summer and will be looking for a second trip to state as well as looking to lead his entire team farther than in the past. Luis Hernandez will also be on varsity, and Adismel Campos, Buddy Garcia, Christian DelToro, Nolan Atha, and freshmen Angel Mora, Peter Wright, and JJ Lugo will all compete for varsity positions as well. Head coach Stephanie Vogel was named Coach of the Year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) last year and is ready for the new season to kick off. I m expecting another strong and successful year. Vogel said. I m very excited with the new blood with our younger runners, and I am anxious to see how the veteran runners compete this season. Most of the runners have been practicing on their own and in informal practices all summer, and DXC should have another good season this year. Many miles and sheer determination for greatness have been put in this summer. Vogel said. 7 Friday edition DALHART TEXAN, August 25, B Ready for some football? The D cheerleaders are! High school football involves much more than just two football teams playing each other. There are the parents in the stands, the bands, the pep squads (or in Dalhart s case, the Super Fans), and the cheerleaders. Dalhart has an outstanding cheerleading program. Dalhart High actually has two separate cheerleading squads, a junior varsity squad and a varsity squad. The junior varsity squad cheers at home non-varsity games, and the varsity squad cheers at both home and away games for the football team. In volleyball and basketball, they only travel to district away games while cheering at all home games during the school year. The JV and varsity combine together for pep rallies. This will be the second year for Natalie Garcia to be the cheer sponsor at the high school. The varsity cheerleaders for this year are Marley Ames, Bri Cruz, Olivia Garcia, Faith Lindsey, Lexi Posey, Cali Rutherford, Loree Simmons, and Hannah Wilkerson. Lyndsey Dovel is also a member of the varsity squad as the mascot, Wolfie. The JV cheerleaders are Mackenzie Crosby, Kyiara Gonzalez, Caryce Guerrero, Ashlyn Koehn, Hali Ledbetter, Ani Lees, Lizbeth Marquez, and Claire Miller. There are five pep rallies this year, and the public is invited to attend. Four of them are on the Friday afternoon of home games, at 3:15 p.m. in the high school gym, with the first pep rally being on Sept. 1. The other one will be the night before homecoming (Sept. 28) at Memorial Stadium, following the junior high football games. The homecoming pep rally is always the biggest one of the year, and will hopefully attract a large crowd. After the homecoming pep rally is over, fans will travel out to Rita Blanca Lake for the homecoming bonfire. Another special event that is a Dalhart tradition is mini-cheer camp, which is a four-day event in which elementary students are taught some cheers by the high school cheerleaders, and then help out during the first quarter of the game that week. This year s mini-cheer camp will be held the week of Oct. 6 That is the week that Dalhart play s Pampa, and the Pampa game will also be the annual Pink-Out game. Last year the cheerleaders wore special pink uniforms for the Pink-Out games, not just in football but for volleyball and basketball as well. The D cheerleaders aren t just talented in tumbling and cheerleading. Two of the varsity cheerleaders, Olivia Garcia and Faith Lindsey, are also talented singers and often take turns singing the national anthem before home volleyball and basketball games. The D cheerleaders are ready to cheer all the Dalhart High teams to victory D JV cheerleaders. 8 8B DALHART TEXAN, August 25, 2017 Friday edition Hartley looking to win another state title The Hartley cross-country teams will be looking to repeat the success of the past three years as they begin another season. The Hartley Lady Tigers won the state championship both last year and three years ago, with a third-place finish at state in Kelly Wieck has been on all three of those teams, and will lead the Lady Tigers this year along with fellow senior Michaela Leaton. Both Wieck and Leaton were named all state in cross-country last year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA). Wieck finished in the top 25 in every meet that she ran in last year, and was in the top ten four times, including a second place finish at district, a sixth place finish at regional, and an eighth place finish at state. Leaton placed in the top 25 six times, and placed in the top ten four times, including fourth place at district and fifth place at regional. She placed 16th at state last year as well. Also returning from last year s state champions are Khodee Gomez and Melissa Mize. Deisy Sotelo, Jazmin Romero, Mattie Leaton, Julie Avila, Kyllie Richardson, Lexie Lopez, and Jordan Smulders will also be running cross-country for Hartley and competing for spots on varsity. Hartley also had one boy make it to state last year, and Alejandro Chavez brought home a silver medal as an individual from state after winning the regional championship. Chavez is just a junior, so he has this year and next to win an individual state title. He recently won the Joe Nisbett 1-mile race during XIT weekend, which included beating out adult runners. Chavez often competed against larger schools last year just to give him extra competition. Hartley also has four other boys running cross-country this year. Michael Clark, Edgar Chavira, Jorge Chavira, and Aidan Weber will all be competing for the Tigers. Dedra Hill is once again coaching the Lady Tigers, and Lee Parker will be the boys coach this year This will be Parker s second year in Hartley and his first as boys coach. Hartley should be extremely competitive in cross-country again this year Hartley Cross-Country Schedule 8/26 9/02 9/09 9/16 9/23 9/30 9/30 10/07 10/12 10/14 10/23 11/04 Canyon 6-Mile Relay at Canyon Borger XC Meet at Borger Amarillo Invitational XC Meet at Thompson Park Adrian XC Meet at Adrian Lubbock Invitational XC Meet at Mae Simmons Park OSU Cowboy Jamboree at Stillwater, OK Canyon XC Meet at Canyon Lanthrop Memorial at West Texas A&M District Meet at Boys Ranch Junior High District Meet at Borger Regional Meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock State Meet at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock JH/ JH/ JH JH/ JH Aidan Weber Alejandro Chavez Deisy Sotelo Edgar Chavira Jazmin Romero Jorge Chavira Julie Avila Kelly Weick Khodee Gomez Kyllie Richardson Mattie Leaton Melissa Mize Michael Clark Michaela Leaton It s all about how you play the game.
