4 The Nutcracker 2018 It s a snowy and cold Christmas Eve as Godfather Drosselmeyer and his nephew are working in his toyshop putting the magical final touches on his surprises for the Stahlbaum s Christmas party. Back at the Stahlbaum s home, Clara and Fritz can hardly contain their excitement for their family s annual Christmas party. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum welcome their friends and family into their home and joyfully engage in the Christmas festivities. Godfather Drosselmeyer, running late as always, mysteriously sneaks into the ballroom. He surprises the children with magical tricks, entertainment from his life-size dancing dolls, and unique handmade gifts. Drosselmeyer introduces Clara to his young nephew and gives her a wonderful present, a handmade Nutcracker doll. Clara is smitten by the nephew and is in awe of the gorgeous gift. Fritz quickly grows jealous and grabs the nutcracker from Clara. In the struggle, the nutcracker is broken. Heartbroken by her brother s actions, Clara turns to Drosselmeyer for help fixing her nutcracker. As the party goes on the families soon realize how late it is, they begin saying their goodbyes for their journey s home. Drosselmeyer and his nephew disappear just as mysteriously as they had arrived. After a perfect Christmas party, Clara is tucked into her bed for a goodnights sleep. At the stroke of midnight, Clara is awoken from a deep sleep by mice swarming her and rats sliding her bed across her bedroom. The rats chase Clara from her room to the family s ballroom where, to her surprise, she realizes that she had shrunken down to the size of a mouse and the Christmas tree grew ten times in size. Terrified and afraid Clara is surrounded by mice and rats until Drosselmeyer and his magical three dolls step in to scare the mice away. Drosselmeyer uses his magic to transform Clara s Nutcracker doll into a prince to protect her. Out of nowhere, the Rat King appears and attempts to capture Clara. The Prince leads the toy soldiers into a battle against the Rat King and his army of mice.

5 The Prince and his soldiers fight a courageous battle but are no match for the Rat King s army. Clara, out of desperation, pulls off her slipper and hits the Rat King in the head, causing him to fall unconscious. The rats run away dragging their King with them. After the Rat King is defeated Clara and the Prince are transported into the snowy forest outside of the Sugar Plum Fairy s castle. The Snow Queen and Snow Flakes lead Clara and the Prince through the magical forest towards the Sugar Plum s castle. The Snow Queen leads Clara and the Prince into the Land of Sweets. They are then introduced to the characters of the palace and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Clara shares the story of the Nutcracker s battle against the Rat King and how she saved the Nutcracker s life. The Sugar Plum Fairy is so astonished by Clara s bravery that she presents her with a stunning tiara and a celebration in her honor. The Sugar Plum Fairy leads Clara and Prince to a glittering throne, where they can enjoy delicious sweets and magical dances. Characters from all over the kingdom travel from far and near to entertain Clara and the Prince with beautiful dances. Soon the magical Land of the Sweets and the characters began to get hazy and Clara opens her eyes to find herself lying in her bed, wondering if it was all just a dream

Mollie was classically trained in ballet, hip hop, jazz, modern dance, and tap at the Foundation of Arts. In 2007, she began training en pointe under Heather Intres and completed the Teacher s Assistant Program. While dancing, her most memorable roles were performing as the first Clara in The Nutcracker to dance en pointe at the Foundation of Arts and performing as Odile in Swan Lake. Mollie has taught ballet, jazz, and tap classes at the Foundation of Arts for over nine years, choreographed numerous dances for Spring Showcases, choreographed for The Nutcracker for five years, served as the Assistant Director/Stage Manager for The Nutcracker in 2016, and has loved serving as the Director of The Nutcracker for the past two years. Mollie is passionate about providing her dancers with a strong technical foundation of dance, while instilling a love for performing and creating dancers who perform with elegance, grace, and purity. Mollie resides in Jonesboro with her husband Shaun where she is the Community Outreach Coordinator for The Make-A-Wish Foundation, enjoys volunteering in the community, and being an active member of First United Methodist Church.

11 A Note from the Director When I joined The Foundation of Arts family 19 years ago, I knew that this place was home and would forever be my family. My Nutcracker story began when I held my first role as a BonBon in this magical production. The Nutcracker very quickly became a tradition and passion that I couldn t bear to go a year without being a part of. From dancing as the Foundation of Arts first Clara to dance en pointe, to being a choreographer, serving as the Assistant Director, Stage Manager, and now being the Director of The Nutcracker; this journey has been one that I will forever be grateful for. As I compose my Director s note for our 2018 production, I am so swept away by the power of our community. Our cast of 121 performers have spent over 160 hours rehearsing, our parents have spent hundreds of hours volunteering, I have spent the last 12 months preparing for this moment, and we can t even begin to count the amount of time our set and costume team spent on this production. Our Nutcracker cast, crew, volunteers, and choreographers are truly unlike any other. I am so honored to be a part of this incredible production, one that brings our community together. This beautiful production would not be possible without our Nutcracker crew. JR Lawrence and Andrew Tolson, The Foundation of Arts is extremely lucky to have such a creative and hardworking production team. Thank you so much for making my vision of the Land of Sweets come to life. Victoria Meyers, you are a Rockstar! I appreciate the endless hours that you put into these stunning costumes and for your artistic touches. Megan Dacus, my assistant director and sweet friend, it is such a blessing to have you in my life. Your kind soul and love for is production inspires me every day. I am so grateful for you and all that you do. Lastly, thank you to each of our choreographers, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters for creating and believing in the magic of The Nutcracker. I am humbled to be the Director and a choreographer for such a wonderful cast of dancers and performers. This production holds a special place in my heart and it has been an honor to pass my passion for The Nutcracker Ballet on to my performers. I am so proud of each one of you and now this is your moment! Leave everything that you have on that stage and never forget the joy that you feel in your heart while you are performing. Our performance of The Nutcracker Ballet will take you on a journey tonight of adventure, magic, love, and courage. I hope that our performance will fill your heart with the spirit of Christmas. Thank you for supporting the Foundation of Arts and all of our incredible performers. ~ Mollie Parker Potgieter

18 A Heart for the Arts Dear FOA Friends and Family, I remember the year that one of my daughters was cast as a soldier for the third year in a row. It was brutal. She could not understand why on earth the Director could be so insensitive. She dreaded the first rehearsal and wanted desperately to quit. And as a parent, deep down, I couldn t imagine what was going on either. But the way our story unfolded showed my daughter and me how important the concept good waiting can be. Good waiting is one of the most important aspects of theatre-donewell. It s sitting for a while in something uncomfortable or unpleasant to see what good can come of it. It s one of those aspects of theatre-done-well that helps us grow. I love theatre because of this fact. It is not only an exquisite form of art that speaks to the highest standards of truth and beauty, but it is also a process in which each individual collaboratively and internally grows to realize that if they wait for truth to be revealed, their story becomes less about me and more about us. We all begin to consider our individual selves less than the whole if we listen carefully and watch closely. The Nutcracker is an amazing ballet that is a great challenge to create well. Achieving that wonderful balance between an exquisitely magical presentation for our patrons and a fulfilling, beautiful experience for our volunteers is HARD. Oh, it s tough work for everyone, no matter what, but the challenging balance to which I am referring is truly theatre-done-well. And I love a challenge. The year my daughter was a soldier for the third year in a row, she met a couple of other dancers cast in the same role who she realized would be forever friends. She keeps those memories close to her heart to this day and is glad now for the Director s casting then. Even if it felt like the good waiting took forever, in the end, it was GOOD. Thank you, to all the volunteers and parents who are givers of time, support, work, and love. Our numbers of you are large, and you are an important part of the FOA family. You don t just give the minimum, you give all that is necessary and more. You listen carefully and watch closely, and your hard work (and good waiting) is an example for all of us. If you give, please consider the FOA in this season of giving. With a Heart for the Arts Kristi

21 Few things make us happier than seeing an artist achieve something beautiful that they have been striving to learn. It grows them for a brighter future. More than 400 students come to class because of a tuition waiver program. They pirouette, sing, & paint together, without concern for their race or their family s income, religion, or political affiliation. At least 450 actors, dancers, & technicians will grow each year from creating theatre as volunteers, and over 2,000 students will experience quality theater at a free or reduced ticket price through Education Enrichment Series outreach program for area students. THANK YOU For showing interest, in some way, in the FOA. If you give, please consider the FOA with a gift this season. We can sell tickets, but the thousands of people whose lives are changed because of our outreach programming are only touched because people like you support it. Without you, the FOA can t continue to have the impact it has on our community.
