2 December Round the Capitol Square 2018 I just wrote and wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and now we are wishing everyone a Blessed and Merry Christmas. It has been an interesting summer, fall and winter all in one. No one liked the heat but not so sure about the cold either. We have not done any visiting lately since Calvin had a full hip replacement on November 7th. The hip is doing well but he has a lot of nerve damage causing him to have no control or feeling in his foot, ankle and part up way the leg. Sometime it feels like pins and needles are sticking him and also a burning sensation. The therapist said this is a good indication for everything coming back. It will just take time. He also can't put much weight on the leg. Thanks for the cards, thoughts and prayers that have been sent him, Upcoming dances for your holiday pleasures are Fun Dancers Christmas dance with Lincoln Siegmann calling. "Santa and Mrs Clause will appear at 6:30pm, to take lessons. There will be TV coverage. Then from 7:00 to 9:00 will be regular dancing. Brooke has worked really hard to put this together, so be sure and try to attend. You may even be able to give Santa your wish list! Carousel Club #340 will have a New Years Eve dance. Wheel N Deals will also have a New Years Eve dinner and dance. If you have a special dance be sure and put it on UPCOMING EVENTS in the RCS so I can remind dancers. January 4-5 will be the Winter Festival in Waco with a line up of 7callers and the Pates doing the cueing January 18th and 19th will be the Texas Federation SRD nominating meeting in Texarkana. We are hoping that Calvin will be ready to go by then. Merry Christmas to all. Remember the birth of Christ is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Keep dancing Calvin & Ruby LET S DANCE

4 December Round the Capitol Square 2018 Santa Learns to Square Dance (A Few Weeks before Christmas) (Read to the rhythm of Twas the Night Before Christmas) By Brooke Peters VP ASRDA and Publicity Officer Twas a few weeks before Christmas, and Santa was glum As he surveyed his workshop, now that most work was done. There were piles of presents and candy and treats All to be sorted, so the Christmas deadline he d meet. He glanced out the window, his reindeer he saw, Running and jumping and kicking up straw. They knew before long, they d be pulling the sled, Delivering gifts from the lists Santa read. The elves were all singing and dancing and such, But good old St. Nick found the noise a little too much. What is wrong with my Santa? asked dear Mrs. Claus, You don t seem so jolly What is the cause? Year after year, I deliver these toys, In all kinds of weather, to good girls and boys. And don t get me wrong, I love what I do, But I want to do something for just me and you. Mrs. Claus s face now brightened as she asked What would that be? It has to be fun and provide energy. I would like to make friends, other than elves, And eat some great food in spite of ourselves. Santa said I ve heard down in Texas the folks have a dance, That offers fun, friends, and fitness and even romance. It s good for the mind and great for the soul But enjoying oneself is the ultimate goal. We welcome all couples, singles, and teens, Wear what you wish You can even wear jeans. The man up in front is the caller tonight, He ll teach you the moves and have you dancing just right. The music was varied from country; rock, to the blues, Even some gospel and songs people knew. The caller s performance was a show in itself, That caller, thought Santa Would make a pretty good elf. The snacks at the break were amazing to see, Cookies, cakes, fruit, and chips and even veggies. The dancers were friendly, helpful and fun, Many asking the Santas where they were from. We live way up north where no squares have we seen, Maybe only in Texas lives the square dancing scene. Oh no! said the dancers, That s simply not true. Square dancing is danced, the entire world though. And it is always in English the caller chimed in. Whether you dance in Australia, Japan, or Berlin. You ll always be welcome no matter where you go dance, And you can share this with others Is there a chance? I d love to! cried Santa, A list I will make, Of all clubs and their lessons, contacts, and dates, I ll pass out the lists when I deliver the toys, So the grownups get something, with girls and boys. They got in their sleigh and off they did fly, To the North Pole for the gifts because Christmas was nigh. The dancers then heard, as they drove out of sight, Merry Christmas, Ya ll! Go Square Dancing tonight! I m in, said the Misses, and off they did go, To take square dance lessons, away from the snow. The reindeer were thinking, This trip is too soon! Yet they all pulled that sleigh, their silhouettes in the moon. The sleigh finally landed, up there on the roof, Where the dancers inside, heard the prancing of hooves. Lessons are starting, so come join a square! Called one of the dancers, Oh, I see you re a pair. LET S DANCE
5 December Round the Capitol Square 2018 WHEEL-N-DEALS Is it December already? Our 4 mainstream students are doing incredibly well and should graduate around the first week of January. They will be outstanding club members should they decide to join our club. Several members of our club attended the Brainstorming session on November 3 rd that Wayne and Lucia Weston hosted at their home in Canyon Lake. The turnout was excellent! There were about 40 participants from 3 different Texas Associations Alamo Area, Austin Area, and South Texas and 5 callers. Everyone shared ideas and experiences their clubs have had publicizing square dancing. The group created a mailing list so we can all keep in touch and share information. It was very encouraging to see so many people interested in actively promoting square dancing. Three of our members were particularly busy in November. Shirley Myers, Steve O Neal, and myself have been promoting January 2019 square dance lessons for the ASRDA and the Alamo Area SRDA using the theme Santa Learns to Square Dance. Steve and Shirley were purchased their own Santa and Mrs. Claus outfits and have worn them for television interviews and newspaper photos. They were treated like major celebrities at Fox SA. All the news anchors came out of their rooms to have their pictures taken with Santa and his Misses and all members of a group touring the studio had individual photos taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Make sure you plan to attend Wheel-N- Deals New Year s Eve dance and NYE dinner after the dance. K.O. Jeans will be calling and Billy Grimsley will be leading line dances between tips. The dance will be on 31 December from 8:00 10:30, with dinner and couples dancing from 10:30 to midnight. Requested donation is $ It will be at City Park Recreation Hall at 170 Charles Austin Drive, San Marcos, TX. Have a Wonderful Holiday Season! Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Brooke COME AND TAKE IT Thanksgiving is past and everyone is preparing for Christmas in his or her own way. Whatever your preference, I hope you are enjoying the preparations and not finding them a burden. Remember: 'Tis the season to be jolly, so let's try to keep that idea in mind when things start to get crazy. Come and Take It Squares celebrated Halloween a few nights early with a fun dance...small in numbers but large in enthusiasm. Lots of goodies and some spooky calling by Wayne Weston! November has been a good month with Wayne and Al Frazier, calling. Thanks to both of you and the other callers for the great job you do every time you call. We dancers appreciate you! November also brought Neva and Josh Sackett back from their summer of workcamping in Utah (the Zion National Park area). They seemed to have had a great time with lots of sight-seeing, hiking, and picture-taking. We are happy to have them back in our square. Our loyal and irreplaceable President Calvin Buesing had hip replacement in November and is recovering. We look forward to having him back with us and dancing soon. Neva Sackett had shoulder replacement surgery in November, and we certainly wish her well. Wayne Weston will be calling all three of our December dances (December 3, 10, 17). On December 17, we will have a festive Christmas dance (no gift exchange) and hope many of you will join us for holiday fun and yummy goodies! We will be dark December 24 and 31 and back dancing on January 7. Hope to see you then to start the new year off right! 2019? Wow! So, in closing, have a lovely Christmas. LET S DANCE
6 FUNDANCERS Over the past month, FunDancers has been at the center of what began as a mainstream lesson publicity request from Jim Douglas, president of FunDancers, to Brooke Peters, publicity officer for the club. That simple request morphed into a Santa Learns to Square Dance campaign that has and continues to promote beginning square dance lessons starting in January 2019 at 12 clubs in the ASRDA and Alamo Area. There have been articles in Schertz Magazine, Local Community News (Northeast SA), and, in December, the Herald-Zeitung, as well as television coverage on 3 San Antonio stations. On December 2 nd, 2018, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be taking their final square dance lesson at the Fun Palace in Schertz, TX before returning to the North Pole to pack their sleigh for Christmas. Many exiting events are happening that evening. First, our Plus Class students will be graduating at approximately 6:15 pm after a final review of all the Plus moves. Bob Martens, our new VP and student coordinator, will be in charge. Then Santa and Mrs. Claus will be taking their final lesson from Lincoln Seigmann, our square dance caller for the evening. Being the final lesson for the Santas, we are making it special with a huge Christmas dance. Along with the Santas, there will be elves and reindeer on the dance floor. There may be other Christmas characters as well. We will have line dances to Christmas music. The hall will be decorated and there will be a tree and a place where Santa can sit to listen to your Christmas requests. There will also be 2 tables of festive Christmas snacks. The Herald-Zeitung newspaper photographer will be there taking pictures for an article that will be published sometime in December. The purpose is to let everyone in the New Braunfels area know that, in January 2019, beginning square dance lessons will be offered in San Antonio, Gonzales, Georgetown, Canyon Lake, Marble Falls, Cedar Park Austin, and San Marcos. At the conclusion of the lessons, Jim Douglas and Santa are going to do a take-off on The Great Carnac that Johnny Carson used to do. It will poke fun at various club members. Rick Schofield will again be video-taping the lessons, part of the dance on December 2nd, and a short generic public service announcement that promotes square dancing and taking lessons. If Brooke and Rick can successfully edit it, Brooke s plan is to put it on Youtube for folks and other square dance clubs to download and share on their Facebook pages. Rick video-taped Santa s first lesson on November 4 th. Parts of the video were included in the interview for the Focus on South Texas show on Fox San Antonio that aired on Saturday November 24th and again on CW35 on Sunday November 26 th both at 5:30 am. If you missed the broadcasts, you can see the segment by visiting under the Focus on South Texas tab. Thanks so much to Rick for video-taping and Steve O Neal and Shirley Myers for playing Santa and Mrs. Claus in the video and on air. This Christmas dance is going to be GREAT! We are really encouraging all dancers to wear red, green, and/or white or come as a Christmas character such as a Santa helper, an elf, a reindeer, the Grinch, etc. If you aren t in to dressing up, come anyway. We will have some extra reindeer antlers at the door. We hope to see you all at the Fun Palace at 6:30 pm on Sunday 2 December! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday season! LET S DANCE
