2 January Round the Capitol Square 2019 We hope everyone had a very Blessed Christmas and we wish you all a Happy Healthy New Year. Calvin is still not up to par. We had a doctor s appointment today and the hip is healing very nicely. We go back in six weeks for x-rays to see the healing process again. He still has no feeling in the leg and foot, but still has severe pain in the foot, which makes no sense. They say it is nerve related and could take anywhere from six months to a year or longer. He is taking therapy and does some at home. Thanks for cards and phone calls, we appreciate them. We will have to miss the nominating meeting in Texarkana in January. Chuck and Cheryl have graciously offered to go in our place. Thank you, Chuck and Cheryl. On January 12th we have our next Austin SRDA delegates meeting at Hyde Park Christian Church at 3:00P.M. It would be great if just once we could get a full slate of delegates to attend. The Mid-Tex committee will meet following the delegates meeting. We hope to be there, if not Brooke is doing a great job for us. It depends on how Calvin is getting around. There will be lessons at various clubs beginning in January. Please check the ASRDA web site to see where they are and angels are always welcome to help out other clubs. We were elated over our Christmas party. We had two squares plus. This is certainly great, considering we have been dancing a two couples square. Thanks to all who came. Thanks also to Billy our photographer for coming and taking pictures. He told me he gets his information from the ASRDA calendar. If you have something special coming up please put it on the ASRDA calendar. Mid-Tex is coming right along. Mark your calendar for May 10th & 11th, They have been working hard and have the flyers out. They have a great line up of dancing for your pleasure so WHEEL AROUND GEORGETOWN in May. 4 January Round the Capitol Square 2019 COUNTRY CUZZINS The Cuzzins jump started the Christmas season by participating for the first time ever in the Marble Falls night-time Christmas parade on November 16 th. We had 11 dancers available to dance in the street, the weather was just right, and excitement filled the air. There was a big sign on the back of the trailer inviting people to our January lessons and walkers handed out cards. Lots of fun! We celebrated the holidays with a Christmas party on December 14 th at St. Luke s Episcopal Church in Cypress Mill. Wayne & Luzia Weston provided lots of Christmas music for the dancing, the food was outstanding, and we contributed to the church s food donations for local pantries. The Plus class completed all the calls just in time for the year to end. We now have 9 more dancers to fill the Plus squares! It will be fun to help them continue to learn what they have been taught we had to keep telling them that it takes floor time to really get those new calls into the memory bank. Open House for the 2019 Mainstream class will be January 3 and 10, 6:00-7:30 PM. The Cuzzins have been pushing hard to recruit new students for a good class. Save the date!! Wildflower dance will be on the first weekend in April, April 6, 2019 with Joe Saltel and Kay & Bob Kurczewski. As we look back at 2018, the Country Cuzzins are grateful for a good year as a club that included classes, special dances, visitations and FUN! Randy Dougherty will be joining Dan Clairmont calling and Bob & Kay "Ski" Kurczewski will be cueing the rounds. (See attached flyer) Our new Beginners class is moving right along this month, and we have 10 new students at this time. We have been averaging around 5 squares for class with the help from all of our great Angels! We are only dark on Sunday, December 30th, so come out and play with us on any other Sunday! Our Sunday night dances 7:30-9pm are booming with Fun and Laughter!! Odd weeks, 1st, 3rd, & 5th Sundays are Mainstream dances. Even weeks, 2nd & 4th Sundays are PLUS-Level dances. Come join us for laughter and fun! Only $5 per dance. AND... If you can come early to help Angel our beginner s class, that would be great!! Our Sister PLUS-LEVEL club, Austin Plus Dancers (APD), is starting a DBD Plus workshop starting January 3, 2019, for all interested Plus dancers. This is an opportunity to learn the Plus calls by the definition from every starting position. You already need to have taken a Plus class to do this 9-week workshop. 6 January Round the Capitol Square 2019 WHEEL-N-DEALS December was a really busy month for 3 members of Wheel-N-Deals. They were busy promoting upcoming beginning square dance lessons for 12 clubs from San Antonio through North Austin and surrounding communities. Using the theme Santa Learns to Square Dance Steve O Neal and Shirley Myers appeared as Santa and Mrs. Claus with Brooke Peters, the creator of the publicity theme, on Fox San Antonio and CW 35 Focus on South Texas with Camilla Rambaldi in a 10-minute interview about square dancing. In addition to the interview, a video clip was used that showed Brad Caldwell teaching Santa and Mrs. Claus how to dance and showed them dancing to Here Comes Santa Claus. Steve and Shirley were instant celebrities. There was a group touring the television studio that day and everyone in the group asked to have their pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Not to be left out, the television news anchor men and women came out of their offices to be photographed with the Santa s. Shirley and Steve were Santa and Mrs. Claus again on Channel 5 in a live 3 minute segment at 6:30 am with Niku Kazori along with other dancers from Wheel-N-Deals, FunDancers, and Wayne and Luzia Weston from Canyon Lake squares. In addition to being live on Channel 5, a behind the scenes video was taken of the segment and posted on Facebook and Instagram. Contact information to find out more about square dance lessons at clubs in the ASRDA and AASRDA was provided in all the television segments. Wheel-N-Deals is one of the 12 clubs that will be starting square dance lessons again in January. Our 4 current mainstream students will be graduating on 10 January. The following week, January 17 will be our Open House with mainstream lessons beginning on January 24 th. Billy Grimsley will be the instructor for this upcoming class. Wheel-N-Deals and the Canyon Lake Square Dance Club have created a partnership that we are hoping will benefit students from both clubs. We have agreed that students from either club can attend lessons at the other club for free so that they have the option of having 2 lessons and 3 hours of floor time each week. We coordinated our start dates so students would be learning the same moves at both clubs on the same weeks. Hopefully this will result in stronger mainstream dancers. Thanks so much to Wayne and Luzia Weston for working with us on this initiative. In an effort to make our club more visible in the San Marcos community and support the Department of Parks and Recreation, six of us went to a Christmas dance at the San Marcos activities center. Folks were really friendly; the DJ was fantastic and there was a lot of food. They even had a display area specifically for event flyers so, of course, we filled one of the slots with our upcoming lessons flyers. Gracie Roberts hosted our monthly game night on December 10th. Beth and Don Rankin made the main dish and the rest of the folks brought sides. Seventeen people attended so we divided up into 2 groups and played 2 different games. Our guest callers for January will be Joey Duhamel on 10 January and Nelda Eaton on 24 January. Chet Miles will be calling on January 3 rd and 17 th. Come join us on the dance floor! 9 January Round the Capitol Square 2019 SHIRTS 'N' SKIRTS Our Christmas Dance, held on December 5, 2018 was a tremendous success. We had 34 visitors and 38 club members in attendance. Thanks to all who attended, brought gifts for the Brown Santa program and brought a tremendous assortment of refreshments for the dance. A reminder that we will be DARK on December 26th in celebration of Christmas. We take this opportunity to wish each and every one a Blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Yours truly (Hubert and Lorraine O'Neal) will travel to California for the holidays and we expect to again (our 25th year) help decorate floats for the annual Rose Bowl Parade. Watch for The Lutheran Hour Ministries Float. Remember if you wish to see the parade on television commercial free, watch it on the Home and Garden channel. We will begin new dancer mainstream lessons on January 9, Lessons will be taught by Brad Caldwell from 7:00-8:00 pm and the regular dance will follow from 8:00-9:30 pm. Please let any of your friends who are looking for lessons know of our plans. The first two nights are free introductory nights and formal lessons will begin on January 23, The charge for the lessons will be $40.00 per dancer for the entire series of lessons which will last approximately 16 weeks. A MAJOR CHANGE will occur for our club as we are relocating our dance venue beginning on January 2, We will begin dancing at Christ Lutheran Church located at 510 Luther Drive in Georgetown, TX. We will continue to dance on Wednesday nights at the new location. Normal dance nights (excluding the lesson nights) are from 7:30-9:30 PM. Between tips, rounds are cued by Lucy and Jerry Pate on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and line dances are led by Martha Burghart on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Visitor fees are $5.00 per dancer and visitors are encouraged to ask our treasurer about a special card which gives you a free dance after you visit four times. Please visit our club website ( for up to date information on our dance schedule. Lorraine and Hubert O'Neal COME AND TAKE IT Happy 2019! We hope everyone had a lovely Christmas with family, friends, good food, good times, and many blessings...maybe Santa even brought you exactly what you asked for? Now, we are looking toward a new year with lots of promise of good times and good square-dancing! Wayne Weston called for us in December, including a Christmas-y dance on December 17. We appreciate the visitors who came to help us celebrate, and I hope if you came, you won one of our yummy, delicious door prizes. Lots of surgeries in our area of late. Eva Sackett had a shoulder replacement, and we hope this ends all her shoulder troubles. Then, Calvin Buesing had a hip replacement in December. That has slowed him down, but he is getting around, and I predict he will be back in a square soon. You cannot keep a good man down, and, especially, not one who is getting the excellent care that Ruby is giving him. We plan to start lessons in January. Open house will be on Monday, January 7 at 7:30 at our usual venue, The Presbyterian Church of Gonzales at 414 St. Louis Street, just south of the Courthouse. If you know of anyone in our vicinity that is interested in learning to dance (or refreshing their moves), we would love to have them join us. Wayne Weston will be calling for us in January to get our students off to a great start. Mark your calendars for our anniversary dance on Monday, February 11 at 7:30. Gary Sanders is calling, and we promise a good time with a country store, split the pot, and yummy goodies galore!
