2 October Round the Capitol Square 2018 Praise the Lord for the wonderful rain we have had. Hopefully everyone got some. How often we go about in our lives and not see the sunrise and the beauty of God's works. Our time is taken up with busy things so we don't have time to stop and look at all God provides in our lives. God help us to slow down and look around and observe all the beauty around us so that we can look upon it and marvel so great that we give to others the feeling of wonder of Thy great works. Pray for those who are ill, suffering, or are in harm s way. We attended the Funstitute Dance this week-end. It was a fantastic dance. Friday night there were eight or so squares and Saturday night had eighteen or more squares. The callers and cuer did a great job and everyone really enjoyed the evenings. Congratulations on a job well done. The caller's wives did a good job of keeping the entrance of dancers coming in and oh! those hot dogs were delicious. Thank you, Thank you. The Canyon Lake Squares seem to be off and running with a great start with a good turnout. If you do not have a partner, Luzia will certainly see that you get to dance. We have visited several times and it is a very outgoing group. Happy to have you as a new club. Mark your calendar for October 20th for the ASRDA delegates meeting at Hyde Park Christian Church beginning at 3:00pm Mid-Tex will have a meeting after the delegate's meeting. The Teen Scholarship Dance will begin at 5:00pm -6:30pm for student level. 6:30-7:00 prerounds 7:00-8:30 main stream and rounds and 8:30-10:00 will be plus and rounds. Anyone who wishes to attend the meeting is welcome. Several Halloween dances that I know of are Wheel & Deals on October 25 and Shirts & Skirts on October 31st. Buckles & Bows have their anniversary dance on October 27th..Come N Take It Squares will have their annual FREE dance on the square on October 6th. Dancing will be from 6:00 to 7:00pm with a meal to follow. Meat and beans and tea and coffee will be furnished. The rest will be pot luck, please bring your favorite side dish. Please come and help us put on a good exhibition. Come N Take squares had a great turnout for our Labor Day hot dog dance. We had five squares thanks to all of you who helped make the dance a success. We gave out several visitation certificates. We have other visitors, which we really do appreciate. 4 October Round the Capitol Square 2018 COME AND TAKE IT October means big doings in Gonzales: our annual Come and Take It celebration which commemorates the first shot fired in the Texas Revolution in October 1835 ( a few months before the Battle of the Alamo). Lots of events take place, like a parade, battle reenactment at Pioneer Village, live music, arts and crafts vendors, children's activities, contests, art and photography exhibits, food booths, beer garden, and an-only-in-gonzales event, the chicken-flying contest! The event you do not want to miss is square-dancing on the square! At 6 PM on Saturday, October 6, we will do a one-hour exhibition on the square (just next to the beer tent...easy to find), and we need visitors to dance with us. We try to get the audience (and there is always a large audience) to dance with us but want you, too! It's free! Al Frazier is calling, and, the best part, we have a pot-luck dinner afterwards at Greg and Linda Julius's home on the other square. Meat and beans will be provided; we would love to have you join us to dance and to eat! So bring a side dish or dessert and plan on lots of fun! For a complete list of events and times for the whole weekend celebration that begins on Friday and continues through Sunday, go to the website, cityofgonzales.com and look for the Chamber of Commerce listing, or Google Come and Take It celebration. Y'all come for a small town Texas celebration at its best! Our Labor Day hot dog supper and dance was a huge success due to all the visitors (about three times the number of club members) and the calling of Wayne Weston. Who knew Wayne could find so many songs that were work or job-related? The hot dogs, done by Everett Kies, were delicious with yummy sides, including Calvin's homemade sauerkraut and a variety of delicious desserts. Thanks for all who came and danced with us. Wayne and Chet Miles did the calling in September, and we always appreciate them both. In October, Nelda Eaton will start the month off on Monday, October 1, then Wayne of the 8 th and 29 th, Dan Nordbye on the 15 th, and Bob Farnell on the 22 nd. What a good line-up of callers for October, so mark your calendars and come visiting! October 29 is a fifth Monday, but we will not be dark! Wayne will be calling, and we will celebrate Halloween a few days early. Costumes are welcome and recommended but not required, so plan to come for some spooky fun! Betty Shelton seems to be recovering nicely from her surgery; that is good news, indeed. The Sacketts are still in Utah, workcamping and seeing the beautiful sights of that area near Zion National Park. Calvin and Ruby are traveling to Amarillo for a square dance meeting; that's a nice long drive! I had another knee replaced in September; pretty soon, I am going to be bionic and ready to dance. We extend deepest sympathy to Wayne and Luzia Weston and their family upon the death of Wayne's mother in September. Remember the dance and pot-luck on Saturday, October 6, and remember that we dance from 7:30-9:30 every Monday night at the Presbyterian Church (414 St. Louis St.) in historic downtown Gonxales. Visitors are always welcome and appreciated. 8 October Round the Capitol Square 2018 BUCKLES & BOWS will celebrate their 15 th Anniversary Dance, on. Please join us for an evening of fun dancing and Halloween fun! The flyer is in this month s RCS. We are very excited to welcome back guest callers and good friends: JON JONES & DEBORAH- CARROLL JONES from Arlington, TX! The dance will be held at Hyde Park Christian Church, 610 E 45th Street in Austin. Jon & Deborah will call Mainstream from 7:00 9:00 p.m. and Plus from 9:00 9:30 p.m. during the evening. This dynamic couple has been calling for many years and always entertain with high-energy dances. They ll call smooth choreography and great singing. They have been active in Callerlab and promoting Square Dancing throughout the world. We encourage all dancers to come and enjoy the evening with Jon & Deborah Carroll-Jones. They have agreed to call a couple of Old-Tyme Square Dance Tips to add to the fun. It will be a GREAT Halloween dance, and we encourage everyone to come dressed in costume, to add to a fun dance, as it is sure to be a SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN FUN dance night! Please check out the flyer for more details or visit Buckles & Bows is Offering Club 50/Mainstream Lessons on Wednesday Evenings, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Singles, Couples, Teens are welcome to come join us. Angels are always welcome. We will follow lessons each Wednesday evening with our regular mainstream & plus dance from 7:30 9:30 p.m. We have just started the lessons, so contact Arnold (arnold@gladson.us) if you have some folks who would like to join us. We ll work them in. Buckles & Bows dances every Wednesday at Cedar Park First United Methodist Church, 600 W. Park Street, in Cedar Park. Buckles & Bows dance schedule is: Lessons from 6:00 7:30 pm, Mainstream dance from 7:30 8:45 pm, and Plus from 8:45-9:30 pm. Please check our website at: for any changes in our dance times. Visitors are always welcome to join us in a square and/or Angel during lessons when you can! Dress attire is always casual. WHEEL-N-DEALS Wheel-N-Deals hosted our first community Barn Dance on August 24 th. Rich McMath from Austin was our caller and the Rusty Nail String Band played for us. The purpose of the dance was to bring non-dancing members of the community in to dance traditional square dances with experienced dancers. All experienced dancers were encouraged to invite anyone they thought might be interested. Following the dance, the beginners might want to take Modern Western Square Dance lessons at one of the 11 locations offering lessons this fall. We had roughly 85 people attend the dance. Of those 85, 65 were experienced square dancers. We had around 20 non-dancers. Of those 20, we got contact information on 9. Those 9 individuals were either contacted by or a message was left on their phones thanking them for coming to the Barn Dance and inviting them to the Open House and Lessons. No visitors from the Barn Dance came to our Open House or first week of lessons. We did have 3 women come to our Open House but only 1 returned for the first week of lessons along with a woman who used to dance but wants to review mainstream by taking the class again. We decided not to offer lessons if we only had 2 students. Then, at Fun-Sti-Toot on September 14 & 15, both Chet Miles and I were approached by several people wanting to take lessons at our club. We decided we would continue lessons one more week to see how many people show up. There is a chance that the rain kept many people away so we will keep our fingers crossed that we have enough students to make a class worthwhile. Cherri Burrows did an outstanding job heading up our Ice Cream Social on August 30 th. Susan Powell stepped in to lead line dancing while Billy was in Fun Valley. Chet Miles and Fred Goynes were our callers and we had 2 squares worth of visitors for a total of 3 squares. Thanks to everyone who supported our dance. Sadly, our long time member Grace Cha Cha Brooks, lost her mother in September. Grace had been her mother s caretaker for years. Many members of the square dance community attended the memorial services and filled almost half of the church. Please keep Grace and her family in your prayers during this difficult time. Wheel-N-Deals will be having its Halloween dance on October 25 th. We will have alarming Halloween line dances, scary snacks, and prizes for most original costume, scariest costume, best 2 person costume, and creepiest line dancer. Costumes are highly encouraged but not mandatory. Chet Miles will be our howling caller. LET S DANCE 7

12 October Round the Capitol Square 2018 SHIRTS 'N' SKIRTS September was an interesting month for Shirts 'n' Skirts as we had many members, our club caller and our cuers taking a "vacation" up to Fun Valley Colorado. We had John Kephart from San Antonio and Bob Knowles as our guest callers while Brad Caldwell was leading the group in CO. We are so fortunate to have such a great group of callers and cuers from this area who can and are so willing to fill in when needed. Over the summer we have been having a 30 minute workshop each week prior to our regular dance. The workshops alternated between mainstream and plus each week. Attendance was very good and it has been interesting to see the level of dancing increase. Thanks to Brad and visiting callers who have participated in these workshops. As we move into October, we will be back on our normal dance schedule with Brad calling the squares, Lucy and Jerry Pate cueing rounds on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and Martha Burghart leading line dances on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Of special note is our 5th Wednesday HALLOWEEN DANCE on October 31, We invite you all to make plans now to attend this dance which will feature Brad Caldwell as our "Spooky" caller along with Lucy & Jerry Pate as our "Spook-tacular" round dance cuers. The evening will begin with Pre-rounds from 7:00 to 7:30 pm and the regular squares and rounds from 7:30-9:30 pm. If you have never attended one of the Caldwell/Pate Halloween dances, you have missed a real treat. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Please put this dance on your "can't miss" list and come see us in Georgetown. A donation of $5.00 per dancer is requested. Please see the flyer for this dance here in the RCS publication. Shirt 'N' Skirts dance on Wednesday nights at the GISD Administrative Annex, 1313 Williams Drive in Georgetown, Texas. Normal dance nights (excluding the lesson nights) are from 7:30-9:30 PM. Between tips, rounds are cued by Lucy and Jerry Pate on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and line dances are led by Martha Burghart on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Visitor fees are $5.00 per dancer and visitors are encouraged to ask our treasurer about a special card which gives you a free dance after you visit four times. Please visit our club website ( for up to date information on our dance schedule. Lorraine and Hubert O'Neal Food for Thought: Smiles are contagious...be a carrier. COUNTRY CUZZINS The Cuzzins welcomed former members and traveling ones back at the end of summer with a great Homecoming Dance on August 30. Wayne Weston was joined by Gary Bible to keep the five squares entertained. Check out our website for pictures. Plus level lessons instructed by Wayne Weston started on September 6th and will continue until the end of the year. The class of 10 has couples and singles learning the other part women learning to dance the men s part. To fill the squares, we ve even called on Bailey Sutherland to dance the other part as a woman -- and he does a great job. Lessons are from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. To get to know each other better, the club has designated the second Thursday of each month as a time to eat dinner together before the dance. In August, we met at Bluebonnet Café. This month, we got together at Julie s Cocina in Cottonwood Shores. Dancers do like to eat! We will be at River City Grill at 5:00 pm on October 11 th in case you re in Marble Falls that night. The dance that night will be all singing calls lots of fun. It s not too early to remind everyone that the Cuzzins will have a Halloween Dance on October 25 th, 7-9 pm. Guests are welcome but we love to be in costume; just so you know when you see the Hulk or Beetlejuice on the dance floor. Save the date!! Wildflower dance will be on the first weekend in April, April 6, 2019 with Joe Saltel and Kay & Bob Kurczewski. Chuck & Laura Orr, Secretary LET S DANCE 11
