2 August Round the Capitol Square 2018 As we begin our term as presidents for 2018/2019 we are going to borrow Bailey and Gaynelle's opening paragraph from when they were elected president. " We would like to encourage each of you to become active participants in the world of dancing (square dancing, round dancing, clogging and line dancing.) We want to thank Bailey and Gaynelle for a great two years. It will be hard to fill their shoes. They havegone over and beyond with all they did and are still doing. Congratulations to them on being selected "Dancers ofthe Year" they truly deserve it. Our motto is "Let's Dance" This means visiting. Our outlying clubs are small and we have to depend on visitors. We will be visiting clubs as time goes by. We are very happy to have our appointed officers filled. Thanks to most that agreed to stay and those that are new to the board. Thanks also for those that are serving on Mid-Tex for the next year. Mid-Tex did a great job this year and everyone seemed to have a really good time. If you know anyone who might be interested to work on Mid-Tex, please let us know. Calvin and I have served on it numerous years and enjoyed the time spent on it. It is not that difficult and the fellowship and fun is worth it. Congratulations to Brook Peters who was selected as "Rookie of the Year." She deserved it. Brooke is an eager beaver and willing to help where ever needed, not to forget she is our vice president. Oh What a Great Benefit Dance this past Saturday night. The singing was Great, the selections of music were Great and the fellowship was Great. The whole dance was FANTASTIC! Also reacquainted with many dancer friends from years past. Our prayers are with Dave. It was great to see such a huge turn out. Calvin & Ruby Buesing Presidents LET S DANCE 1

7 August Round the Capitol Square 2018 SHIRTS 'N' SKIRTS June has come and gone...july will be almost gone by the time you are reading this article. How time does fly when we are enjoying our favorite activities of square and round dancing. A highlight for our club was our ICE CREAM SOCIAL dance where we welcomed Jim Hayes back as the caller. It was good to have him back and we thank all the visitors who came and shared the special evening with us. Another special dance which was well attended by our club members was the Austin Eagles 2018 Reunion Dance. The beneficiary of the dance was David Murray, one of the founding members of the Austin Eagles, who was recently diagnosed with liver cancer. We all wish David a successful battle as he faces a long arduous and expensive treatment. As we move forward with our dance schedule, we invite you to attend our July 25th dance featuring Greg Tillery of Albuquerque, New Mexico as our guest caller. Greg is well known as the Little But Loud Caller. Our fifth Wednesday special on August 29th will be an ALL PLUS DANCE featuring John Kephart of San Antonio as our guest caller. The dance will be from 7:30-9:30 PM with squares and line dances (2 + 1) led by our own Marvelous Martha Burghart. We are also planning a Halloween dance on October 31st so watch for more information in the near future. Shirts 'N' Skirts dance on Wednesday nights at the GISD Administrative Annex, 1313 Williams Drive in Georgetown, Texas. Normal dance nights (excluding the lesson nights) are from 7:30-9:30 PM. Between tips, rounds are cued by Lucy and Jerry Pate on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays and line dances are led by Martha Burghart on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. Visitor fees are $5.00 per dancer and visitors are encouraged to ask our treasurer about a special card which gives you a free dance after you visit four times. Please visit our club website ( for up to date information on our dance schedule. Lorraine and Hubert O'Neal Food for Thought: Change is the law of life. Those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. FUN DANCERS Fun Dancers Independence Day Celebration Dinner/Dance was a huge success! We had 9 squares dancing and 85 people including 6 non-dancers who came for dinner and/or watched the dance. Four of those 6 visitors are now on our 2019 Mainstream Lessons Student List...they want to learn square dancing! At last count we had 41 visiting dancers from San Antonio through Austin and Georgetown and over to Gonzales. This dance was the largest attendance for an Independence Day dance in the club's history. Our club president, Jim Douglas had multiple compliments from visitors about the dinner. They were impressed by the abundance of food, its variety, and tastiness! Fun Dancers is lucky have a group of excellent team players who do whatever is necessary to make the club successful. Fun Dancers concluded a very successful 2018 Mainstream lessons curriculum. We had 13 students complete the 17- week class program, and 10 of those became club members. Fun Dancers is also really proud of 8 of our Mainstream graduates. They organized a 50 minute practice group prior to our dances so they can review moves they aren t too sure about. The new dancers are really motivated! We will be starting Plus Lessons on Sunday, September 9 th at 5:00 pm. The classes are for any interested Mainstream dancers or dancers who used to dance Plus but have been out of square dancing for a while. Our upcoming callers are Gary Sanders on 5 August, Dale Smith on 12 August, John Kephart on 19 August and Chet Miles on 26 August. We hope to see everyone at the Fun Palace in Schertz, TX very soon! LET S DANCE 6

8 August Round the Capitol Square 2018 COME AND TAKE IT Are you having a good summer? Staying cool? Getting in a lot of dancing in cool places? The summer is flying by: here is August! Come and Take It Squares has had a good summer with excellent calling. Al Frazier livened up the month of June for us as Wayne Weston traveled the country. We ended June with an amazing pot luck dinner and the excellent calling of Joey Duhamel from Arkansas. Thanks to all who came and contributed delicious dishes! Our first dance in July showed how resourceful square dancers are. When our scheduled caller had a calendar mix-up, the night turned into a delightful evening of snacking and domino playing. The next Monday night, we were blessed with two callers (from none to two! Wow!), Wayne was back and so was Al Frazier...good calling and good dancing as the two teamed up. Al came back and brought Craig Abercombie on July 23; those two are always a treat! If you get this newsletter before Monday, July 30, take note: we are NOT dark on that fifth Monday but will be dancing with Greg Tillery of Albuquerque, NM. Greg has been calling since the late 80's and has called all over the country. His slogan is Little but Loud! We are looking forward to this dance and hope to have many visitors. On August 6, we will welcome Gary Sanders, a favorite from the Houston area, so you do not want to miss that dance! Wayne will call on August 13 and 27, and Jim Hayes will do the honors on August 20. Wayne will also call our traditional Labor Day Hot Dogs with all the trimmings dance on Monday, September 3. If you like hot dogs, yummy desserts, and good dancing, be sure to join us that night. Thomas Pirkle had a knee replacement, so we hope to see him back dancing soon. One of our students is his surgeon, so we hope she fixed his knee just right for dancing! Come and Take It Squares lost a loyal member and a good friend in July. Wiley Berrymen finally succombed to cancer after a long fight. He was the member who acquired our callers and sent s notices to keep us all informed and up-to-date; he continued doing these jobs throughout his illness and treatments up until about a week before his death. We loved and appreciated Wiley and his sweet wife Charlene who he nursed, lovingly, through her struggle with cancer and death less than two years ago. They are both missed greatly. Services for Wiley are tentatively scheduled for August 4 in Seguin; for information, call Calvin or Ruby Buesing at or me at We were happy to welcome Ike and Barbara MacArthur as new members of our club. They are long time friends of Come and Take It Squares, so it is really nice to have them as official members now. Have a good rest-of-summer and include a trip to Gonzales any Monday night. You won't regret it; we dance from 7-9 at the Presbyterian Church, 414 St. Louis St. Martha Jo Whitt, Reporter BOOSTERS OF SQUARE & ROUND DANCING Sherman, Chuck & Cheryl Woodard, Hugh & Donna If you wish to become a Square Dance Booster please send a check for $10 made out to ASRDA to Donna Woodard, Tandem Blvd, #3402, Austin, TX LET S DANCE 7

10 August Round the Capitol Square 2018 WHEEL-N-DEALS Wheel-N-Deals had 2 theme dances in the last 2 months. Stu Ringer did an outstanding job calling our Flag Day/Patriotic dance. He spent many hours putting his program together because every bit of music he used was upbeat and patriotic. Almost every dancer came dressed in red, white, and blue and the snacks topped it off with the same color scheme. The dance made everyone one proud to be an American! In July, we had our first Luau Party and Dance called by Dennis Ray. Dennis had brought some Hawaiian music to play before the dance started but was unable to find music he felt comfortable using for tips. The hall was decorated with Hawaiian fish, grass skirts on the tables and paper pineapples as center pieces. Dancers came in colorful Aloha attire and the snack table turned out to be a Hawaiian feast. There was traditional Hawaiian food such as Poi, Hawaiian King Rolls, spam, several varieties of Hawaiian meat balls, chicken satay with peanut sauce, 2 types of kim chi, dehydrated tropical fruit, ham and pineapple roll ups, shrimp and mango ceviche, several Hawaiian tasting casseroles, lots of fresh fruit and different Hawaiian cakes for dessert. Many people commented that is was like being at a real Luau without the roast pig. The food was amazing! A big Mahalo! to everyone who brought food. Even though we were not able to find anyone to give Hula lessons between tips, everyone had a great time and plenty to eat. WND Board members, Chet Miles (our club caller) and interested club member met to discuss upcoming lessons. It was decided that we will be teaching Mainstream this time and not Club 50. Lessons will begin on September 13 with an Open House the week before on September 6 th. (See flyers in this RCS Newsletter) In order to get people to our Open House, we are offering a free New Old Time Barn Dance to the residents of San Marcos and the surrounding communities on Friday, August 24 th. Rich McMath, a contra dance and traditional square dance caller from Austin, will be our caller for the evening. Rich has years of experience calling for weddings and parties where people have no idea how to dance. The Rusty Nail String Band will be playing. At break, we will tell people about our upcoming square dance lessons as well as other clubs lessons and where folks can go to contra dance. We will have had all participants sign in for insurance purposes but we will also request a telephone number or address so we can follow up with them. Experienced square dancers are very welcome to attend as well. (Flyer is in this newsletter) We are also excited to be working with Wayne Weston s Canyon Lake Square Dancers to give students more floor time. Wheel-N- Deals Board members along with Chet and Wayne, decided that the Canyon Lake students are welcome to come to WND lessons for free while they are students at Canyon Lake. This will get students used to another caller as well as to meet other students and club members. Wayne has offered to let past students of WND to attend his classes for free. WND will be a month behind Wayne s class so it will not work to have our new students attend Canyon Lake lessons this fall. Chet and Wayne will work together in the future to more closely coordinate lesson start dates. We are hoping other clubs will want to participate in this lesson sharing in the future. Wheel-N-Deals will be having its annual Ice Cream Social on August 30 th. We will serve home-made ice cream. There will be a contest for the most popular ice cream as voted on by the dancers. There will be a prize for the most popular ice cream. Chet Miles and Fred Goynes will be calling. Please join us any Thursday evening for our regular club dance and plan to come experience a New Old Time Barn Dance on August 24 th. Oh, and check out our face book page at Wheel-N-Deals Square Dance Club to see photos of our theme dances. See you on the dance floor! LET S DANCE 9
