12 Social Media and Square Dancing Social Media is becoming more and more a part of everyday lives. Even if you don t use Facebook or Twitter, you have probably heard the terms. Every TV station, radio station, newspaper, magazine and other forms of communication has a Facebook page, Twitter account, Google+ account or some form of social media. They realize that to communicate with the masses, online communication, especially Social Media, is important. What is Social Media? Tuft s University defines it as a term used to collectively describe a set of tools that foster interaction, discussion and community, allowing people to build relationships and share information. Social media is Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Vimeo, Linked In, Twitter, photo sharing sites such as Flickr or Tumblr, and blogs. These sites all have one thing in common--they share information with others. The Information Age, for better or worse, has changed the way we communicate and the way we distribute information to others. There are many other social media sites. For the purposes of getting the word out about square dancing, we are focusing on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook: Square dance clubs and other organizations should be proactive in getting their information out to the public. Square dance clubs should have a Facebook page, especially those who frequently have guest callers. Post pictures of people having fun at your dances. Callers should have a page to announce where they are going to be calling. The technology is here, let s make use of it. Use the HSRDC page to link to your page and to share your events. HSRDC has a Facebook page, as does Bluebonnet Squares, Hey Lollies, Brazos Bottom Belles & Beaus and Lake Jackson Promenaders. Apologies if any are left out. Twitter: Twitter is another form of Social Media. Twitter is an on-line discussion. People tweet their thoughts, comments, etc. Twitter is an excellent source of information because it s quick and it s on the spot. As fire threatened a favorite dance spot in South Fork, Colorado (Fun Valley), the firefighters in the area tweeted the events so people far away knew what was happening on the spot. You can follow someone on Twitter and know what they are up to with their posts. HSRDCTweets is the HSRDC twitter handle. Twitter is very public and everything that is tweeted can be seen by anyone who wants to look. Twitter uses symbol and hashtags (#). The hashtag what is searchable. So to compose a tweet to HSRDC, it would go something like this:@hsrdctweets any good dances in the Houston area tonight? #SquareDance #Houston -12-

13 A club could tweet an upcoming BBBB is having the Houston Callers Association call their Halloween costume dance. Y all come! #SquareDance Anyone in the world who searched on twitter for #SquareDance would find that tweet. Twitter limits the number of characters per tweet. Like instant messaging, new terms are defined like LOL for laugh out loud. It s a shorthand way of writing. Online Identity Protection: Some people are afraid of Facebook, Twitter, etc., because they ve heard stories of being hacked and identities being stolen. Yes, sadly, it happens, there are unscrupulous people out there who do things like that, just as there are people who will grab a purse from your shoulder in a big box store parking lot or break into your house and steal your valuables. Those people will steal credit card offers from your mailbox and get a credit card in your name. But as with your home, your purse or wallet and your car, you take precautions to protect your online identity. Personal Information: You can post as little or as much information about yourself as you want on Facebook. You tell Facebook in your profile whether you want your profile to be public (anyone can see it) or for friends only. You choose who you accept as friends on Facebook. It s not a popularity contest to see who can have the most friends, it s interaction between friends. You can unfriend people if their posts annoy you (or just hide their posts). Accounts: You can have more than one account. Use one account for your on-line activity, such as Facebook, online shopping, anything that is public facing. Have a separate friends and family account. Don t use the same password for everything. Make sure you have protection on your internet (if you re with Comcast, they offer Norton Internet Suite free). There are good free virus programs available. Don t be afraid to use Social Media, such as Facebook and Twitter. Just like anything else, use caution. Let s spread the word about square dancing. -13-

21 Katy Prairie Promenaders Our Club squared up in 1970 with members from Katy, Pattison, Bellville and West Houston. Richard Beckendorff was the club caller for about 16 years. Bernie Youngblood was the club caller for about 5 years. Fred Goynes has been the Katy Prairie Promenaders caller for 22 years. Fred has been calling since the 1960 s. He calls both locally and nationally. He also calls with the Gulf Coast Caller s co-op in New Braunfels each year. Many of our members go to dance with Fred in Fun Valley. Fred was awarded the Caller of the Year by the HSRDC at the Hoedown in Galveston in KPP has changed locations through the years. We were at First Baptist Church in Katy, the VFW, Mary Jo Peckham park, Memorial Lutheran Church, Faith West Academy and now in our present location, Westland Baptist Church. KPP is a basic/mainstream club with announced plus. We also have line dancing between tips. We hold square dance classes starting in September through February of each year. We perform exhibitions for schools and churches. This year, our club tried something new, having what we call Rusty Hinges. The purpose is to bring back dancers that have dropped out of dancing. It has been good for the club and fun seeing the smiling faces back into square dancing. Our club has about 65 members ranging in age from the teens to the early 80 s. Our club has several annual events. Our Mother s Day dance in May, our annual Chili Cook-off in August. Our fund raiser and biggest dance of the year is our Rice Harvest Festival in October. Katy members work very hard to make it a success. We know the success comes from having all the visitors that come and support our dance. We also have a bring your favorite leftover s after Thanksgiving dance in November; plus our Christmas Jingle Bell dance. We would like to THANK all dancers that come visit and help support our club. -21-

23 I would like to thank everyone who made my retirement dance such a great success. FairBees did a wonderful job hosting this dance and I appreciated all the hard work contributed by the entire worker Bees! Nancy Beaton did a wonderful job on my retirement scrapbook, not to mention the plaque and all the memories contributed by J Frank Lewis from Bluebonnets, Steven Warr from Tomball Promenaders and Charles Golden from Swinging Seniors. All the kind words shared by Roxie Walker, J. Frank Lewis, Claudette Olsen, Howard Rowan, Jerry Tucker and several others. The Corsage for Deana and boutonniere for me by JoAnn Caperton was a pleasant touch and one that we can keep forever!! I especially want to thank Vernon and Ann Wells for all the time they spent advertising this dance. It takes people like them who really get the word out to other dancers that make it a success! It was great seeing Dora Nichols, Walter & Allana Schelnick and Jack & Beth Banks and we thank you for coming. Deana and I also want to thank Robert & Nancy LaRue and Howard & Sandra Rowan for coming so far to make this a very special event. You are very special friends and we thank you so much.
