7 PRESIDENT S LETTER The graduation season is upon us, and we have already graduated new Frontier Squares and Hey Lollies. Other clubs will be having graduations soon. Our new dancers are very excited, and we are excited for them. Those who attended the Trade n Buy enjoyed some great dances, and many added some new square dance clothes to their wardrobes for very little moola. We wish to thank all the callers who participated in this annual event, the Meiers for planning the event, the Belomys for providing beverages, and the Board for the cookies. A big thank you also to all who supplied clothing for the sale! The next HSRDC meeting will be May 12, followed by the Wildcatter Squares Fun Fest, with Lee Hailey calling & the Prows cueing. There are several other special dances in May. Check your Where n When and go visiting. The HSRDC Board has new work shirts with our new logo on them. We will be wearing them at the Quarterly Meeting. You too can have the logo embroidered on a shirt. The cost of the logo itself is $20. (additional charge for adding your name). The Board chose a short-sleeved pique polo shirt, which is available at Penney s for $12. However, you may supply any shirt you want to have embroidered. Have you seen the new electronic version of the Where n When on our website? If you haven t, do take a look at it. You will like it! Susan Pittman is doing a fantastic job with this new project. 12 A big thanks to all of you that let me know how much you enjoyed reading the article in last month s W n W. I m glad it was so well received. Let s look at some other things that could possibly make you a better and smoother dancer. I ll start with a very basic movement, the Do-sa-do. DEFINITION: A Do-sa-do is known as a zero movement. You start and end in the exact same place but you do something in between. A Do-sa-do is most often done with the person directly in front of you. You pass the person you are facing right shoulder to right shoulder, slide back to back and back up left shoulder to left shoulder to end in facing dancers. This puts you right back in the spot you were in before you begin the movement. DISCUSSION: A lot of dancers do a swing Do-sa-do and automatically end up in an ocean wave. If you do this chances are that you will be out of position to do the next call. Unless the caller calls a Do-sado to an Ocean Wave you should end the Do-sa-do face to face with the person with which you did the Do-sa-do. If you want to do a swing Do-sa-do just make sure you end up face to face and not in an ocean wave. If the person you Do-sa-do with does not want to do a swing Do-sa-do do not force the issue. There is also a Left Do-sa-do. For a Left Do-sa-do each dancer passes left shoulders, slides to their left back to back and backs up right shoulder to end as facing dancers. This call was previously known as a See Saw. A See Saw was used by the caller to prepare the dancers for a left handed setup for a Left Swing Thru or Left Touch A Quarter or any other left hand call. A caller may also call a Do-sa-do Once and a Half. Dancing Right By Brian White If this is called and you do a swing Do-sa-do your square is broken down. A Do-sa-do Once and a Half is a full Do-sa-do, then pass right shoulders again and end up back to back with the dancer you were just facing. Yes, the caller could have just called a Do-sa-do and then a Pass Thru but you know how we callers can be. Chances are that if the caller did call a Do-sa-do and a Pass Thru and you did a swing Do-sa-do your square would still be broken down. The most important thing I m trying to get across is, if the caller calls a Do-sa-do don t automatically step to an Ocean Wave. STYLING: Doing a Do-sa-do correctly (back-toback) gives the ladies a chance to do skirt work if they choose, this is always pretty. Ladies with both hands on your skirt, moving skirt forward and back to avoid opposite dancer, right hand forward as right shoulders pass, left hand forward as left shoulders pass. Men have the option to either have their arms in a natural relaxed dancing position or they could clasp their hands behind them. Men s right shoulders slightly forward as right shoulders pass, left shoulders slightly forward as left shoulders pass. TIP: If you want to do a swing Do-sa-do try this: from facing dancers step slightly to the left of each other and place your right hand on their left side as waist level., raise your left arm in an arch with your left hand about 16 above your left shoulder, do a full 360 degree turn and end up facing each other. This is much prettier than the swing Do-sado that is popular. Again, make it look good y all. 12

We are reproducing the print version of the Where N When, but adding color, hyperlinks, searchable text, etc. The ads for the electronic version do not have to match the print version in content, you can add graphics, photographs and color to the electronic version of the ad. You can submit any kind of graphic file (.gif,.jpg,.wmf, etc) or you can submit a document (.doc,.docx) file. Photographs are permitted, but keep in mind that the file size (the number of bytes (KB or MB)) should be reduced. Larger files mean slower loading times. Picasa is a free photo editing application that you can use to reduce file size for photographs. To maintain the quality of the print version of the WnW, your camera ready ad for the print version should be submitted in black and white to Mary Pickens at marypickens_1@sbcglobal.net. The print version will continue to be produced in black and white. Your ad for the on-line version of the WnW, with color and graphics should be submitted to Susan Pittman at stpittman@comcast.net. A mobile version for your smartphone is not yet available, however, most smartphones will view PDF files. 14 Houston Callers Association News I would like to take this opportunity to extend a big welcome back to Wayne Morvent. Wayne has had more than his fair share of doctors and hospitals the past few months. We are glad to see him with a microphone in his hands again! I would like to remind all the local clubs that the callers of the HCA will gladly call a dance at your club. We book one club each quarter. Any HSRDC member club is eligible. A club may only book us every other year. Available callers call the dance at no charge; however, if we are offered an honorarium we do not turn it down. We book these dances so that all dancers get to hear callers they may not be familiar with. Callers give their time and talent in hopes of securing a booking from the club. Our second quarter dance is at the Fairbees on Thursday, May 10, The third quarter dance will be at the Tomball Promenaders on Saturday, September 8, WE are looking for a club to host us in the fourth quarter for our annual Toys for Tots dance.
