1 A little love goes a long way; a lot of love lasts forever APRIL - MAY - JUNE 2011 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Ladies of Elegance, WOW!! Did we get the year off to a Bang!! First the Ball in January, then the Oscars in February, and finally the Pageant in March. Congratulations to Myrna!! What an elegant, beautiful and talented Queen we have for We are so fortunate to be surrounded by such lovely women. Of course, she has a hard act to follow. Maddy, you were and always will be a beautiful and sophisticated Queen. Big events and lots of details. The Cameo Ladies are the heart and soul of these events and without you, they would not be as successful as they are. You should be very proud of your achievements and accomplishments. Together, we are a powerful force. I am coming close to the end of my term of office and want you to know that I have enjoyed working with you and for you. We have accomplished many goals. We have attempted new adventures and I hope you have enjoyed the ride. And a ride it has been!! I want to personally thank my very capable Board. What a fantastic Board I had to work with. Let s start with our Vice-President Wanda Smith. Wanda has toiled endlessly to arrange our lunches and has strived to make our meeting time effortless and enjoyable. Wanda, I appreciate your sweet nature and all your support. Our Secretary Linda Haaheim has been impeccable in taking detailed Minutes of all of our proceedings. Linda, you always strive to put our words in the best light. And your counsel is so appreciated. And that Cameo Ensemble what a talented & professional director you are. Sylvia Paterno, our Treasurer you always make sure the dollars & cents add up. The Board has so appreciated your Historical perspective on all the goings on. And last but not least, Linda Zvara, our Member-at-Large Linda is always ready to fill in when we are short of help or merchandise!! Linda, your positive nature & enthusiasm are contagious. Thank you all! What a crazy two years it s been but I wouldn t have had it any other way. MS. SENIOR ARIZONA 2011 MYRNA FOSTER INTERVIEW By roving reporter Marilyn O Connell (Ms. Senior Arizona 2008) The night before the Pageant, Myrna asked her 14- year-old granddaughter if she had any advice for her grandma. She said, Grandma, stand tall, stand proud and a little extra lip gloss always helps! Myrna is still breathless and looking forward to the best year of her life. She wants to thank everyone who made her pageant night so memorable..dreams really do come true. Myrna says with a wide-eyed glow, Now, I get to ride on the back of my baby 1957 T-Bird in the parades! MS. SENIOR ARIZONA 2010 MADDY PASCHAL INTERVIEW By roving reporter Marilyn O Connell (Ms. Senior Arizona 2008) I m OK now.who said that?...maddy?... Dr. Madelaine Paschal?? She taught her managers from the book, I m OK, You re OK, to be better leaders, communicators and to like themselves above all. At the time, Maddy didn t feel OK carrying old parental tapes (as we all have). On all of her TV shows, she ends quoting her grandmother: Take life as you would climb a mountain. It s not getting to the top, it s the endeavor that counts. Maddy, you climbed a number of mountains, reached the summits and

Initiation of New Members March 25 th Luncheon Pinning Ceremony Nominations for New Officers April 15 th Luncheon Election of Officers May 27 th Luncheon Installation of Officers By our roving reporter Ms. Senior Arizona 2008 Marilyn O Connell Myrna Foster was one of our pageant contestants and is now our reigning queen, Ms. Senior Arizona 2011, who is a singer, ukulele player and dancer. Myrna recalls at age 5, her tap teacher chose her to be her partner in a dance school recital. Myrna mastered the tap steps and her mom made a lace-trimmed, long, pink-flowered dress for her costume. As her mom dressed Myrna to go out on stage, the elastic broke in her panties. Mom assured her that the long dress will cover all; but Myrna refused to go on and cried her eyes out off stage. Mom and the tap teacher were not happy, and our poor little girl was devastated. Today, if there were any mishaps in life, Myrna would just put on her big girl panties and get over it even if the elastic broke! Herme Sherry is our Ms. Senior Arizona Herme hates camping. When she was a little girl, that s all the family did camp. Her father was a hunter. He had 2 hunting dogs. On one camping trip, there was a scary event when the dogs started barking like crazy; and her dad untied them. They landed under a tree where a big black bear was camped out. Dad was compelled to raise his shotgun and shoot. It took 3 shots to send him to bear heaven. Sorry to say that in the olden days, one could kill a bear; certainly not today. Raised on a farm, Herme knew how to cut a chicken s neck, pluck & cook it. That s our girl! Linda Zvara has sung the National Anthem in shows from California to Maine & from Bermuda to Florida. Timing of the performance had to be matched with the opening of the skydivers parachutes. Linda composes music, designs her gowns, and she was a tv reporter who wrote her own copy & dragged the photographers along over hill & dale. Linda is a belly dancer with beautiful veil work. Owning 2 German shepherds, she is part of the Southwest German shepherd rescue training. She admits it s hard to give them up after therapy while in her care. Bow wow, Linda! Eloisa Larralde is a breast cancer survivor. Her journey through her survival is a remarkable one of courage, tenacity & inspiration. Eloisa endured chemo & radiation treatments TWICE. She lost all of her hair. (Note her lustrous head of hair now!)at times, she thought death would be better than going through the treatments. Eloisa not only survived, but lives to dance & is active in our Cameo Club, volunteers at John C. Lincoln Hospital and at the Desert Mission Food Bank. She also serves on the Veterans Committee at the Elks Club. You go, girl! We love your smile and joyful nature!
5 June 24 th Luncheon DID YOU KNOW??? Our Board President Lois Springer was involved in 9/11. I applied for a transfer from Phoenix to work in the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) Headquarters in Washington D.C. on the Administrator s Staff. My father had just passed away in January of 2001, and I wanted to be closer to my mother at that time. DEA Headquarters is located directly across from the Pentagon. On my 2 nd day of work there, we were watching the Twin Towers fall to the ground. Then the ground shook violently, and we were told to evacuate the building. The Pentagon had just been hit. I was on the 11 th floor of the DEA building and had to walk down flights of steps. Once we got to the ground floor, everyone spewed out into the streets. Of course, that hampered the rescue vehicles from getting to the Pentagon. The cars were locked down in the underground garage & nobody had access to them. I had a temporary apartment close to the DEA building, so I just walked home. Hours later, my daughter from Australia was the first family member to reach me by phone. My husband & other daughters were scattered between Phoenix, Connecticut, LA and Canada. We all remember what we were doing & where we were during 9/11. Lois will always remember the horrific chaos in another way first-hand experience. Websites / Phone Nos. (480) (602) (602) The Arizona Cameo Club Ensemble auditioned its special 3-part arrangement of our National Anthem at Chase Field on Saturday, March 19 th. Our ensemble include the following 10 Cameo Club members: Sherlene Berry Phyllis Ranzinger Peggy Brown Bea Sauvage Sharon Friendly* Terry Papparlardo* Jean McCurdy Linda Zvara Barbara Imbrie, rehearsal & performance Accompanist & singer Linda Haaheim, Director & singer *No Attendance due to Out of town / House guests arriving Our National Anthem evening gown coordination will always be performed wearing red on each side of our semi-circle, with Linda Z. & Barbara I. wearing white gowns in the center. The director will be dressed in blue. Keep us in your thoughts that we will be selected for the D-Backs performance roster. Peggy Brown s son Scott opened up his FASTSIGNS store (only 15 minutes away from Chase Field) so that we could warm-up & rehearse & use the Ladies Room before car-pooling to the auditions. Thank you, Scott! We love you!! The Arizona Cameo Club Ensemble rehearses the 1 st & 3 rd Wednesdays at Bethesda Gardens in Phoenix from 10:30am noon on the 2nd floor in the Activity Room. You enter the main lobby door & take the elevator down the hall to the 2 nd floor. We would LOVE to have some fresh faces & voices join us! We have extra ensemble books for you. There is no fee to join. From the desk of the Arizona Cameo Club Ensemble, Director Linda Haaheim
