Learn more at June 21 Duck Race The date was Monday, May 25, for our 21st Annual River Duck Race. The adoption form sales were good, the crowd was large, the weather was fantastic, but the river balked! It took a long time for the winners to cross the finish line, but the adopters of the winners were: (1) Amy Davis, (2) Gerard Ciccarelli, (3) Ken Taylor, (4) Brie Boone, (5) Debbie Spaziante. We netted $8,757, and a good time was had by all, after the ducks finally reached the finish line! Thanks to all who helped, and those who had lots of ducks adopted! See page 5 for pictures. When you donate something that you may not have a use for, you help your club by increasing the net amount we get from the raffle, and increase our income, ultimately increasing the amount that we can donate. Tom McSherry will be assuming the title of Rafflemaster as of June 1, so give him a good start, by finding something nice to donate. 2 2 Programs PAGE 2 May 26, Greg Van Antwerp, spoke about the Confessions of an Urban Archeologist. He told us about many exciting writings and relics he has found in estate sales. U. S. Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty spoke to us May 5. She spoke about immigration reform, corporate bailouts, and keeping businesses from leaving the state. She welcomed the lively questions from our business members. May 2, Dave, who recently returned from a trip to the island of Cuba, shared highlights and slides with us. He spoke about the people, the economy, the foods, and the old American cars, that are primarily the transportation there. Team Waramaug Team Waramaug, once again, visited us for our annual Academic Smackdown, May 19! Our team members, Art, Wink, Ann, Brad, Tom and Mark, edged out Team Waramaug members, Kevin Bun, Andrea Conrad, Simone Buck, Anthony Harken, Duncan Gael, Anna Fossi, Carly Klein- Stern, Kezig Varughese, and Moderator, Mike Savo, after a lively session! 3 3 May Student of the Month June Student of the Month PAGE 3 Rob and Science teacher, Karen Terhar (left), welcome and introduce Brady Clarke, our May Student of the Month, from the Science Department. Brady s parents, Irene and Bill, also joined in the introduction. Brady has achieved Excellence in Ecology, Highest Honors (for all of his Senior year), American Studies award, is a United Way Leader, Captain for Cross Country, Indoor Track, PE Leader, Asst. Waterfront Director at Camp Yawgong. He participates in Project CLEAR, Boy Scouts (Eagle Scout), built the Sports Wall at SNIS, volunteers for Paint the People, Boys on the Move, Back to School clothing drive, and many other events. His career goal is to better the environment. Carolyn Hripak Underhill, our June Student of the Month from the Special Education Department, is welcomed by Rob, Math Teacher, Colleen Peterson. Her parents, Leigh and Allen also joined us. Carolyn is a Peer Mentor for Special Education Students, and has received the President s Award for Academic Achievement. She participates in the Tye Dye Club, Hacky Sack Club, and New Milford Bulls Cheerleading. She enjoys hula-hooping and hiking. Her major field is Restaurant Management, and she plans a career as an Herbalist. Congratulations! Our own Carly KleinStern, who was Salutatorian of New Milford s 2015 Graduation class. The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, and, in particular, to encourage and foster: First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity to serve; Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian s personal, business, and community life; Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. Frank, who volunteered to be District Governor Nominee and will be District Governor, again, due to the untimely death of District Governor Nominee, Don Chandler, in March. Rotary Foundation Every Member Every Year, This has been our hope for several years. Fortunately, we have already surpassed our dollar promise to District 7890, for the year ending June 30. We only had 30 members, of our 45 join us. We don t know why the remaining members did not help us achieve our 100% participation. We welcome any comments, expressing a reason. Perhaps we haven t explained the reason why we need all of our members to help us achieve the great humanitarian goals of Rotary International. Please help us to reach our 100% goal this coming year, or tell us where we have not succeeded in convincing you why we do need you. You can still continue to pay a part of the $50 with your dues, each quarter.

5 5 PAGE 5 Duck Race Our food booth team and the rousing crowd keep the food booth busy and well manned. The crowd gathers for the start of the race, Mr. Duck welcomes and greets some of the younger spectators, and Art mans the mike (at the start of the afternoon). After a long wait, for the current and the winds to shift, and help us, the crowd stars to dwindle, and the ducks inch toward the finish line. They finally got there, and burst through the V, as all winners are required to do. Art finally gets to announce the winners! Bonnie and Katy welcomed Gerard Ciccarelli, who won the second prize in the duck race. He was our guest at lunch, Tuesday 5/26, the day after the race, where he claimed his $500! Honorary member Mike Gold, and son Ayden, who owns Ayden s Lawn Care, in New Milford, celebrate the finish of the race. They not only helped with the ducks, but pitched in to help with the finish line, and roll up the equipment at the end. They have both been a part of almost every duck race, since the beginning!
