The Central Intermediate Honor Choir along with North Intermediate and Northeast Intermediate s Honor Choirs took part in a one day music festival to rehearse for a combined concert showcasing Bixby s talented 5th and 6th grade choir students. Each school performed two selections individually the first half of the concert, then the choirs came together to sing two combined pieces under the direction of Ms. Tiffany McGrew, the Bixby Middle School Choir director. It was a lovely evening of beautiful music from the district s youngest vocal musicians. Congratulations to all who participated! Mrs. Nicole Brown, music teacher at North Intermediate, held try outs and selected her Honor Choir members. Choir members include fifth graders: Kameryn K, Ava S, Lindsey L, Gavin D, Magnolia T, Aubrey F, Nelson L, Creighton B, LeAnn L, Max P, Ella I, Ashley N, Caroline M, Bella R, Kendall L, and Elijah D. Sixth grade members of the Honor Choir include: Jack W, Morgan B, Delaney W, Reagan F, Jack T, Mariah C, Rylan A, Michaela L, Audrey S, Kara K, Kerim S, Jazmynn G, Zach A, Lilly R, Ella R, Priyanka T, Sarah M, Lydia S, Avery M, Gracie F, Allie V, Carmelo B, Will C, Zoe T, Kylie O, Josie L, Savannah R, Stevie P, Payton S, Leena A, Juliet C, Madilyn M, Aubrey J, Alyssa M, Ashlyn W, Micayla H, Noah P, and Ally H. On Valentine s Day, Honor Choir delivered singing Valentines to students and staff members to raise money for supplies to be used in the music classroom. Honor Choir from NI, CI, and NEEI have been practicing for a combined concert. Northeast Kindergarten and First Grade Students visited The Gathering Place in Tulsa for a fun morning of activities! Students were able to get a first look at the park that will be open to the public later this year. After the visit to The Gathering Place, students enjoyed lunch and a quick recess at Haikey Creek Park

North Intermediate hosted Col. Paul Lockhart, USAF, Ret., a former NASA Astronaut who flew two missions to the International Space Station in Col. Lockhart along with Space Foundation Education Specialists Bryan DeBates, Slade Bradbury, and Beth Ortiz, educated BNI students about rockets and space travel. Students had the opportunity to pair up and build rockets out of a straw and using paper as a rudder. After the initial launch the students then reworked their design to try and improve the distance the rocket traveled. Nordam, an aerospace manufacturing and repair firm headquartered in Tulsa, selected North Intermediate as one of the five area schools to participate in this event. Thanks to Nordam, the Tulsa Regional STEM Alliance, and the Space Foundation for providing this opportunity for our students. 9GC: Ms. Phenicie s Classes Studies Fahrenheit 451 Ms. Phenicie s classes reread a final part of Fahrenheit 451. Granger shares about those who have left thumbprints in his mind and encourages Montag to stuff his eyes with wonder. Students left their thumbprint on a class tree and wrote about 5 elements that have impacted their lives and 5 impacts they hope to leave in the world. Pi Day at NEEI March 14th was PI day. Our 5th and 6th graders celebrated learning about Pi by spending their day with all things round. In each class, we played the game Pi Face in a tournament style. Each game ended in the final two students playing Showdown. After playing PieFace, students were able to eat all the round treats they had brought for the party. On Tuesday, all students took a quiz over Pi and any child who got a 90 or above was entered into a drawing. 4 children were drawn from each grade to be able to Pie our School Resource Officers in the face during lunch. We had such a fun day and are so appreciative of the SROs, parents, principals and other teachers who helped us have such a wonderful celebration all day! Ms Tally s 4th grade students took a hands on approach to learning math. Divided into small groups each group was to design and construct a geometry city. Each individual student was given a section to build. When individual sections were completed they were put together to form their city. Students had lots of fun learning about shapes, angles, nets, and 3 dimensional shapes.

Bixby NEEI Pre-K through 4 th grade enjoyed Trav s Wild Weather Camp. Several members of the News on 6 Weather Team visited NEEI to teach students about severe weather in Oklahoma and what students should do so they are not afraid. Student s learned about Tornadoes, Flooding, Lightning and Thunder. NEEI Students also enjoyed meeting Radar the Rescue Dog. Animal Sanctuaries Mrs. Leutsch s 4th graders were inspired by the true story of baby hippo, Owen, and 150 year old tortoise, Mzee, who live together in Haller Park Sanctuary. We decided to have a friendly competition while learning about different ecosystems around the globe. Each group was assigned a different continent (or section of a continent) and spent a week researching the wildlife and habitats available in those spaces. Then we applied our persuasive skills to select adorable, helpless critters for our sanctuaries. The goal- be the group that convinces your peers to donate the most pretend money to your cause. The kids spent two weeks designing an aerial view of their sanctuary, building a small diorama of one enclosure, creating a slideshow presentation about their animals, plus creative backstories. Their presentations were astounding and their hard work paid off! CI: Optimism Students of the Month Congratulations to our February Students of the Month: Optimism. Yalissa E and Noah M were chosen by the 4th grade team. Jamie G and Andrew J were selected by the 5th grade teachers. The 6th grade teachers chose Bella M and Kevin F. Students received a certificate as well as free kids' meals at Raising Cane's and Cici's Pizza, as well as a free Freckles frozen custard from the CI PTO. Congratulations! CI: Think-Pair-Share in 5th Grade Reading Students in Dr. McManus Class did an activity using the Think/Pair/Share strategy. They have read The Titanic and used this story as the basis for the activity. Popsicle Sticks were used to pair students. There was Partner A and Partner B. Each student had a script that guided their reading assignment and discussion questions. Most of this is done verbally. It also encourages them to read with expression, intonation, an appropriate speed, and paying attention to punctuation, and phrasing. The kids really enjoyed pairing up with someone different and the freedom to move along at their own pace.this is a collaborative learning strategy where students work together to solve a problem or answer a question about an assigned reading. This strategy requires students to (1) think individually about a topic or answer to a question; and (2) share ideas with classmates. In this strategy, a problem is posed, students have time to think about it individually, and then they work in pairs to solve the problem and share their ideas with the class. Think-Pair-Share is an easy strategy to use for spur-of-the-moment

discussions. This strategy can be used for a wide variety of daily classroom activities such as concept reviews, discussion questions, partner reading, brainstorming, quiz reviews, topic development, etc. Think-Pair-Share helps students understand a topic, develop the ability to filter information and draw conclusions, and develop the ability to consider other points of view. CI: A Wrinkle in Time Mrs. Butler's class recently finished reading A Wrinkle in Time. They gathered together one evening to watch the movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey to culminate this class activity. Comments that students made after the movie included the book was better, the movie skipped a lot of things, and Oprah's character, Mrs. Which, was fully transformed where the character in the book is not 100% materialized. The consensus from the class was that the whole experience was phenomenal and out of this world. CI: 6 th Grade Celebrates Pi Day Before leaving for Spring Break, 6th graders celebrated Pi Day (March 14th AKA 3-14) by decorating t- shirts to represent Pi. Some students had shirts with PI-rates, Pi-neapples, and other designs that started with PI. Doc's Country Mart also donated 200 marshmallow creme pies for students to enjoy while having the Pi Day celebration. CI: Mrs. Pyles 6 th Graders Dissect Sharks Mrs. Pyles recently led her 6th grade science students through shark dissections. Here are a few pictures of the handiwork of her students. It's always fabulous when we can have students learn through hands-on activities about what they are learning through textbooks and classroom instruction. We appreciate our 6th grade science teachers taking on this endeavor with their students in what they will remember for a lifetime. CI: Several Students Qualify for National Geography Bee This year, Central Intermediate had eight students (Jameson B., Thomas C., Zach C., Liberty J., Carter L., Ian P., Nolan P., and Bode R.) qualify for the National Geography Bee which will be held in Atlanta this summer. The regional competition was held in Guthrie on March 17th. Jameson B., Thomas C., Ian P., Griffin S., Case R., Ryan P., and Bode R. also qualified for the Geography Olympiad through the National History Bee as well to take place the same weekend in Atlanta. Congratulations to these students and good luck in Atlanta! Mrs Jean Bundy s students have completed their amazing Holocaust projects and they will be on display at the Van Treace PAC, during Tulsa s annual Yom HaShoah commemoration. This Holocaust Remembrance program is something that every adult and secondary-aged student should see at least once in their lifetime!

The Bixby FFA is proud to report that we will have five State FFA Degree recipients at the State FFA convention in May. We will also have two National FFA Degree recipients at the National FFA convention in October. State FFA Degree recipients: Cameron Clay Jenna Henson Ethan Bolton Matthew Henderson Cally Molton National FFA Degree recipients: Alex Baker Kaylee Lewis Daily breakfast and lunch service is in full swing! Teachers and support are making sure there is plenty for all of our students in need during the walkout!! A few of us CI teachers and nurses had the privilege to go to the High School and cheer on and pass out snacks to our HS Spartans as they arrived to take their ACT exam. It was such a joyful experience to partake in. Pictured are: LeeAnna Zibell,Macee Nolan, Tristan Wade, Krissy Dennis (and my daughter Ella Dennis 1st grade at CE), Linda Christensen (9th gr), Laura Wiley, (nurse at North) Kristyn king, Mercedes young, Trisa Scott Recently Bixby Football team took a group of our players to St. Francis Children's Hospital to see the patients and give them T-shirts and programs. Also, our team has been working in conjunction with Bixby Outreach Center. Last week we drove to OKC to pick up a truckload of food packets for BOC clients who are having trouble making ends meet while the children are out of school.

Leedy Smith is one of the amazing Spanish teachers at the Bixby 9th Grade Center. Her amazing efforts have been recognized by being nominated as the districts teacher of the month for March. Additionally, Dr. Smith defended her dissertation this week. She is a woman of many accomplishments and we are lucky to have her at the ninth grade center At the State Capitol the Oklahoma GE Model Schools were recognized for their achievements. Both Linda Ricks, principal at North Intermediate, and Jana Williams, principal at Northeast Elementary and Intermediate, were at the Capitol to receive their citation from Representative Scott McEachin. GE Coach Rick Pierce was also on hand for the presentation. BNI has also learned that they have achieved GE Model School status for the school year. North Elementary Is Named a Model School North Elementary is proud to announce, after final evaluation on Thursday, March 15, Great Expectations has designated North Elementary a model school. This is an achievement caused by much training and hard work by our teachers, students, and staff. A little bird told me that Mr. Streets also has something to do with it. The Great Expectation model has many components: a culture of mutual respect being foundational. North Elementary is working to establish this model in every aspect of our school. There are two levels of Great Expectation schools. Step one: progressing toward the goal of becoming a model school. Step two: being named a model school. At the start of this school year Mr. Streets conveyed to me often that he really wanted North Elementary to become a progressing school before his retirement at the end of this school year. Well, our teachers, staff, and students gave him a better present. They decided we didn t need a year of being a progressing school we would jump over step one and go directly to step two of being a model school. Congratulations to everyone at North Elementary for this achievement. Now Mr. Streets can retire in peace. 9GC: Congratulations Senor Cox Teacher of the Month Senor Cox was voted February Teacher of the Month by the students at the 9th Grade Center. BASKETBALL GIRLS: Tenacious Lady Spartans Edged In State Opener by R. Holt With two minutes left in the first quarter, 10 th -ranked Bixby trailed top-ranked Putnam City West, 17-3, in a Class 6A Girls State Quarterfinal battle at Memorial s Veterans Arena last Thursday night. The stunned Lady Spartans had a decision to make either keep playing tense or accept the challenge and match the Lady Patriots intensity. Bixby chose the latter, amped up the intensity, received determined efforts from several players and fought tenaciously to the final horn.

You had to be there to understand the intensity and competitiveness exhibited by both teams before the Lady Patriots pulled away late for a victory. It was overwhelming at first but we all got together as a team and decided that we were going to get back into the game, said Bixby junior Savanna Stout. We watched film and came out here confident and ready to play disciplined it just took us a while to get going. to read entire article go to BASEBALL: The Spartan baseball team is off to a good start with 4 wins and 1 loss. The wins have come against Ponca City, Jenks, Union and Broken Arrow. The lone loss was against Union. The Spartans are playing well as a team with every player contributing in the early season success. The Spartan baseball team lost a tough one on Tuesday 2-1 to Sand Springs. Stevie Owings pitched an outstanding game and Matthew Henderson had a great day at the plate. Completing the week with 3 wins and 2 losses to bring their record to 10 wins and 4 losses on the season. The Spartans had wins over Stillwater, Mustang and Edmond Memorial. The losses were to Stillwater and Westmoore. The Spartans continue to perform well as a team. The Spartans were scheduled to play four games, but with frigid temperatures were only able to play two. The Spartans defeated host Enid and lost to Edmond Memorial on Friday. The Spartans are back in action with Owasso followed by the Spartan/Tiger Turf War Tournament. Glenn Sullivan, Head Baseball Coach GOLF: Spartan Golf got off to a good start this season. The JV boys took 1st & 2nd at Guthrie and the JV girls took 2nd at Sapulpa. Varsity hosted an Invitational at Whitehawk, with the lady Spartans matching up against 4 of the top 6A teams in the state. The Boys & Girls both took 2nd place team awards, with Kyle Peterson 2nd medalist and Rachel Eckert also 2nd medalist. Both teams posted low team scores that will clearly qualify them for state if we keep playing at that level. In Saturdays Spartan JV division, we entered 2 Boys teams and took 1 st & 2 nd place and the Girls team took 2 nd place in the Girls JV bracket. Freshman Aiden Kirkland was top JV medalist for his 2 nd tournament in a row. Varsity Boys won the Jenks Invitational which was played at Paige Belcher Golf Course. The team includes: Seniors: Nate Baber & Michael Kemmerly Juniors; Ben Moeller, Kyle Peterson & Freshman Dylan Teeter tied for Individual Medalist with a 72. Varsity girls won the South Moore championship at Westwood. #1 player, Natalie Gough fired an under par 70 to place 2nd individually as well. Bailey Benton backed solidified the championship with a personal best score of 77. Rachel Eckert, Kylee Johnson and Josie Scott filled in the lineup defeating Edmond North, who is considered one of the top teams in the state this year. The Boys, placed 4th at Belmar country club in a rain shortened 6A tournament attended by teams considered favorites to compete at state this year. #1 player Kyle Peterson snagged one of the top medalist awards. Michael Kemmerly, Nathan Baber, Ronson Lee and Dylan Teeter rounded out the lineup for the Spartans. The Spartan Girls took 1st at the Jenks Tournament. The pairings were a preview of what the state CHAMPIONSHIP bracket should look like. Bixby was paired with the Edmond North & Jenks teams. This win is very encouraging going into the end of the season. ~ Kem Morrow, Head Golf Coach SOCCER BOYS: Seeking to better their 3rd place finish from 2017, boys soccer returned to the Edison Green and White Tournament. Scheduled to play NOAH in the quarterfinals, the game was a forfeit as

NOAH did not show up to play. Instead, the boys held a training session (always time to get better) in preparation for the semi-final game against Bartlesville, who defeated Jenks JV 1-0 in their quarterfinal. In the afternoon game against Bartlesville, the boys grinded out a 1-0 win after Tyler Sides converted a penalty in the second half. The Edison Eagles won the top half of the bracket, setting up a Saturday night final vs. the Spartans. I have been good friends with the Edison coach since growing up playing against each other, and also coaching club soccer together within the same club for a number of years now. We talk frequently about our teams, so going into the final we (Bixby) knew that it was going to be a tough match as they have several good players and play much the similar style of soccer as we do. The game started strong as Bixby was dominating for the first 9 minutes, compiling 6 shots and two corners and holding the majority of possession. Then the momentum killer came. Lightning delay. After the 30 minute mandatory break, the game was resumed and Bixby picked up where they left off. What would end up being the game winning goal, came with a little over 2 minutes left in the first half. A corner served in by Julio Bejarano found the head of Colby Henson who guided it back to the near post and past the keeper. Edison responded in the second half and the game was played at a frenzied pace. Both teams struck the crossbar and had numerous chances. Edison nearly scored from a phenomenal free kick but Bixby keeper Eli Trenary got across quickly to make a great diving save. As the final whistle blew, it was Spartans that claimed the championship trophy. That brings the regular season trophy count up to three in four years. The boys now turn their attention to the crazy schedule this week. Beginning Monday, they will play three games in the next four days. The boys traveled to Cascia Hall. They return home for a match up with Nathan Hale. Wednesday will be a much needed recovery day and then back in action against Claremore on Thursday. The team would like to thank all of our parents and fans who came to support us this weekend. It definitely felt like home field advantage for the final! ~ Mike Schwarz, Head Boys Soccer Coach SOCCER GIRLS: The Spartan soccer girls played their second game of the season against Booker T. Washington. The girls lost 4-1 to the Lady Hornets. Later in the week they went on to play in the Edison Tournament. Winning the first 2 games of the tournament which put them in the championship against Cascia Hall. The Spartans took home the trophy from the Edison tournament after beating Cascia hall in a decisive 3-0 win. The girls played Claremore and scored the first 3 goals of the game. However, in the last few minutes of the game Claremore was rewarded a PK, and we finished the game with a 3-1 win. We look forward to playing our first district game against Bartlesville on Tuesday when we come back from spring break. We played our first district game of the season against Jenks. The girls battled the entire game. We went down a goal in the last 10 minutes of the first half, but we came back and tied it up in the second half. After our goal, we had the momentum behind us, but just couldn't get the ball in the back of the net. Jenks scored in the first 10 minutes, golden goal overtime to win the game 2-1. The girls worked so hard and it was a tough loss for them. We bounced back against Muskogee and won 3-0 for our first district win of the season. - Tamara Davalos, Head Girls Soccer Coach STUNT: Our first STUNT games of the season are complete. BMS put up a good fight to Broken Arrow JV, but fell short with an ending score of Bixby Varsity defeated Bridge Creek High School with a score of It was a great showing by both Bixby teams!

Bixby Varsity played Jenks Varsity in a STUNT game at the Whitey Ford Fieldhouse and came away with a win over the Trojans. Bixby Varsity STUNT remains undefeated! Three wins against Grove, Jenks and Broken Arrow. Bixby Varsity, Bixby Junior Varsity and Bixby Middle School all in action at the final home games of the season. ~ Chelsea Wozniak, Head STUNT Coach TENNIS GIRLS: So far this year Tennis has been very productive! The girls tennis team have won 2 tournaments with one runner up. They are making a name for themselves this year. Thursday March 15 the girls swept a tournament. Melody Holcomb came home with 2nd place, Savannah Lee took 1st, our 1 doubles, Kalley Smith and Alexa Powers, received 1st, and our 2 doubles, Maggie Holcomb and Taylor Conway, also took 1st. Overall we took the champion trophy home. This year is looking like it might be a year to remember! Bixby takes Ponca City Tournament! All doubles placed 1st! Singles had a 1st and two 2nd place finishes! Way to play Spartans! ~ Rosie Ashworth, Head Girls Tennis Coach TRACK: The Spartan track team traveled to Bartlesville for their second meet of the season. Brandee Presley and Sydney Roth left an impression, taking first and second place in the 200 meter dash. Adding to her first place medals, Presley again dashed effortlessly into first place for the 100 meter dash. The boys' track team coordinated well for a 4th place overall finish in the meet. The boys' 400 meter relay team, Bret Northrup, Clayton Barbour, Brennan Presley and Jordan Reagan set the pace for the daytaking first place. Right on the heels of that win, the boys' 800 relay team, Northrup, Presley, Reagan, and Zach Legg, sprinted to another 1st place finish. In the 400 meter dash, Jordan Reagan blasted past competition and flew to the finish in 1st place. Following suit, Bret Northrup cinched up a 2nd place medal in the open 100 meter dash. In field events, Zach Legg vaulted into a 2nd place win, and Brennan Presley took 1st in the Long Jump competition. Finishing the meet as well as it began, the Spartan boys' 1600 meter relay, Northrup, Legg, Reagan, and Presley proved that the Spartan track team showed up to win with yet another 1st place victory for the day. Bixby Spartan Varsity Track traveled to Tahlequah this week and, despite colder temperatures, the boys and girls both had another great week to add to this season. Taking third place overall at the meet, the boys' relay teams made yet another impression on the spectators, taking 1st place medals in the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays. Also, sprinting into a 2nd place medal in the 4x100m relay, the boys' relay teams consist of sprinters: Bret Northrup, Zach Legg, Jordan Reagan, Brennan Presley, Clayton Barbour, and Jerred Mulkey. Mulkey also came home with a 2nd place finish in the 400, dash, and Northrup battled into 3rd place in the 100m dash. In Field events, Brennan Presley and Clayton Barbour won 1st and 3rd respectively in Long Jump, while Zach Legg vaulted to a 1st place win. Also in Field events, Maddie Bittle and Kate Bradley won 2nd and 3rd place medals for the girls' Long Jump. Discus Thrower, Ashley Prince came home with a 3rd place medal for her throw. Taking overall 4th place in the meet, the Spartan girls won points for Brandee Presley's 1st place finishes in the 100m, 200m, and 400m dashes. Not only is she unstoppable, but is quickly becoming unstoppable as she once again broke school records this week as well as in Glenpool earlier in March. Cheyenne Wigger overcame much of the competition in the 100m hurdles and won a 2nd place medal. Additionally, distance runners, Ashley Riggenbach and Alexis Von Hagen finished in 3rd place for the 2 mile run (Riggenbach) and 800m run (Von Hagen). The Spartan track team keeps battling every week and bringing home even more medals as they dash further into a successful season for Track! ~ Shannon Altom, Assistant Track

SOFTBALL Slow-pitch season is off and running and the Spartans are competing day in and day out. Weather has played havoc at times but our facilities have tremendously helped and allowed us to host some events that otherwise would have been cancelled due to rain. The Spartans have been led offensively by junior, Chylee Ridge and sophomore McKayla Galliart. Our lineup is riddled with freshmen and sophomores each and every player is gaining valuable experience that will serve our program well as we move into future seasons. This week brings a busy week for the Spartans as we host Tahlequah, Berryhill, and Checotah in the Bixby Festival Tuesday, host Jenks for a double header Thursday, and travel to the Haskell tourney Friday. Come out and support your Spartans! ~ Joy Marie Galliart, Head Slow-Pitch Softball Coach
