1 Sponsor of the Metcalf Avenue of Flags Saturday s program will be Official Visit of District Governor 2nd Vice District Governor Diane Hentges will speak at our meeting on Saturday. She will be representing DG Deb Weaverling and her presence will constitute this year s Governor s official visit. Official Lions International protocol for the meeting includes the following elements: (a) The District Governor or her representative will be recognized as a guest at the appropriate spot on the agenda. (b) A moreformal introduction, however, will occur just before the speech. (c) When introduced and also at the end of the presentation, the DG s representative should receive a standing ovation. (d) There should be only a minimal amount of business conducted at the meeting and no other program should be scheduled. VDG Diane is a member of the Downtown Kansas City Kansas Lions Club. Her husband, David Hentges, was District Governor of the former 17-K7 in Some club members will be absent or late in arriving because they will have been setting up for the Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza. This makes it all the more urgent that everyone who can attend the meeting be present to show our respect for both VDG Diane and for the District Governor. Our District has over 80 Lions Clubs. It is impossible for the Governor to personally visit them all, so she and the two Vice District Governors each will visit one-third of the clubs. October 2017 The Lions Roar Overland Park Host Lions Club Overland Park, KS How do Lions ROAR? They Reach Out And Respond Important News About... Menu Choices and Prices at Club meetings Lions, please order only from the special menu that is on the tables at each meeting. Doing so will help keep breakfast prices at $11. Take time to read all of the information below to learn the details about how our arrangement with Perkins Restaurant works. When the Club decided to meet at Perkins in 2010, we negotiated a menu and price agreement with management. The deal has remained unchanged ever since no price increases in seven years. (An aside: when you eat out, especially at favorite restaurants, are you still paying the same price that you paid seven years ago for the same food?) Perkins charges a fixed price for the specified breakfast items that includes an entrée, juice, coffee, and gratuity. Additionally, our servers put all charges on a single check, paid by the Treasurer, so Lions don t have to stand in line at the cash register to pay. Many, perhaps most, of our members are unaware of the agreement and they order breakfasts that are much more expensive than items on the special menu. As a gesture of good will, Perkins managers have discounted these meals to the agreed-upon fixed price. (Another aside: where else will you find a restaurant willing to do that?) As can be expected, Perkins loses money when the discounting occurs. Management has told us that these losses cannot continue. Your Board of Directors discussed the issue last Saturday. No official action was taken, but informally they decided that a first step is to ensure that all members know of the arrangement with Perkins. This article is intended to do that. Second, the Club will continue to pay annual dues for the Secretary and Treasurer (a policy that has been in effect for many, many years) but will no longer pay for meals for these two officers. The former policy included both dues and meals. This will provide some cushion should the time come that Perkins raises its prices and the Club wants to delay increasing the $11 price for as long as possible. And third, the Directors suggest that those Lions who prefer a different breakfast order what they want but pay the difference between Perkins special price and the general menu price. The $11 you pay does include a few cents above Perkins price to help defray cost of meals for program speakers and guests who are prospective members.
2 October 2017 The Overland Park Host Lions Roar Page 2 The President s Message for October... We ve been busy, We ll stay busy! by Bonnie Orzechowski Hello again, Fellow Lions. Wow! What a great time we had at the recent Downtown Overland Park Fall Festival. The weather cooperated with us this year, except that it was hot! I guess sunny and hot is better than cold and rainy. We worked hard and sweated the day away but we had fun. A big THANK YOU goes out to Lion Lynn for all his hard work before, during and after the festival. And another big THANK YOU also needs to go out to all the people that came out and helped sell hot dogs, brats, chips and drinks. Everyone made the day successful. The Fall Festival was just the beginning of the activities that we have going this fall. Remember, there is still more to get involved in the next few weeks. I hope to see everyone out helping the club and club members out. The semi-annual Overland Park Recycling Extravaganza will be next Saturday (October 14) on the Black and Veatch parking lot (115th and Lamar). Come to our regular meeting at Perkins, then go out to help. Our Fourth Wednesday Social will be a fundraising night at Culver s at the Legends in KCK. Besides helping to serve food from 5 to 8 PM, we ll also socialize and dine there. On November 11 (Saturday), we ll put up flags for Veterans Day and later that morning pack Shoeboxes for Soldiers at Legacy Christian Church (10150 Antioch Road). It will be great to see you at one or all of these activities.. Everybody can help in some way, whether it s donating items or money for the Shoeboxes for Soldiers project or coming for dinner at Culver s, or putting up or taking down flags. It all helps. I look forward to seeing everyone out at these events. Some of us attended the Tonganoxie Lions Club Charter Night on September 16. It was a nice evening that reminded me why Lions is a great organization. Seeing the excitement of the new members in that new club was inspiring. We need to remember that we can make a difference in our community. Making a difference is what Lions is all about, so let s keep making a difference! I look forward to seeing everyone both old and new out at the next few projects that we have coming up. Remember we can have fun while helping our community. See you soon. Big Lion Bonnie Lion Steve Pelz is at his favorite station making and selling popcorn during the Overland Park Fall Festival on September 23. About 240 bags were sold; Half of the proceeds ($123) went to the OPHLC Endowment Fund. Fourth Wednesday, October Social Time and fund-raising event to combine at Culver s at the Legends The next Fourth Wednesday Social will also be a service night at Culver s at the Legends in Kansas City, Kansas (on Parallel Road just west of I-435). A sign-up sheet will be available at Saturday s meeting (October 14). Please volunteer to help out. These service nights have averaged slightly over $200 per event. The money goes into the Club s Service Account. The work is really easy simply carrying trays with customers orders out to their tables. There is plenty of time to order your own meal and socialize with fellow Lions while waiting for you own shift to begin or after it ends. Transfer member Lion Harry Malnicof was kept busy grilling meats at the Fall Festival last month.
3 Page 3 The Overland Park Host Lions Roar October 2017 September s 4th Wednesday Social was a pasta-making event at the home of Lions Mike and Bonnie Orzechowski. Lion Carole Collyard (not pictured) showed the group how to make the dough, then knead it and slide it through the pasta machine. Result? Long narrow noodles that were boiled, then served with meat balls and sauce from an old world recipe. Shown above are Lion Bonnie, Lion Lynn Wolfe, and Lion Zack Olinger. Lions Carole, Bonnie and Zack are on the Social Committee. These Socials are designed to provide informal settings where members can get to know each other better. It s times to start getting your donations to Lion Mae Claxton so she can organize and set up. November 11 is a busy day flags up in the morning, then the Shoeboxes project, with flags coming down at 5 PM. See the flyer at the end of this newsletter for more information. Lions Mike Orzechowski and Lynn Wolfe presented a$500 check to Boy Scout Troop #425 on September 11. Receiving the check is Senior Patrol Leader Austin Lux. Boy Scouts provide a lot of help to the Metcalf Avenue of Flags project. In return, OPHLC makes this donation to the Troop s fund each year. Busy food booth at OP Fall Festival Nets $2,500 to Club s Service Account The annual Fall Festival and Art Fair was held on September 23 at the Commons in Downtown Overland Park. OPHLC members were kept busy grilling, wrapping and selling hot dogs and brats, along with soft drinks, water and popcorn throughout the day. Their efforts resulted in a profit of $2,500 that will go into the Service Account. Lion Lynn Wolfe did most of the planning, purchasing and planning set-up for the event. Other Lions who served throughout the day were Dottie Bloome, Mae Claxton, Ken and Carole Collyard, Wynn Laird, Bob Larson, Harry and Lois Malnicof, Mike and Bonnie Orzechowski, Cathy Oxley, Edson Parker, Steve Pelz, Sarah Porter, Janette Reh, Grant Rogers, Bob Tonjes. Some Lions including Mae, Wynn, Cathy, Grant, and Lynn brought family members who also performed yeoman service. If he missed anyone, Yr. Hmbl. Correspondent apologizes. Sincere thanks go to all of these members and others who helped. They carried a heavier load than usual because some of the regulars were out of town and couldn t serve. A typical scene at the September 23 OP Fall Festival.

5 Page 5 The Overland Park Host Lions Roar October 2017 SHOE BOXES FOR SOLDIERS the Overland park Host Lions Club is continuing its annual project of packing shoeboxes for soldiers. The boxes will go to service men and women deployed overseas. Once again, school nurses from the Shawnee Mission School District have been invited to join with us. The Lions Club has budgeted $1200 for this project. Postage for 50+ boxes will take a large portion of that. Filling the boxes, if we bought everything, would take approximately $20 per box, so we need contributions of items or dollars to help us stay within budget. Here are items we are specifically requesting (taken from the list provided by Operation ShoeBox, with specific suggestions from a battalion chaplain.) Food/Snacks Hard Candy (no chocolate) Gum Such as Eclipse or Chiclets Tic tacs - mints Beef Jerky Canned Fruit (pop-top cans) Tuna or chicken Kits Honey Roasted Peanuts (travel size) Trail Mix Toiletries/Hygiene Baby Wipes wash cloths Deodorant (Liquid Roll-on) Hand Lotion (travel size) Hand Sanitizers (travel size) Q-Tips (travel size) Disposable Razors Shampoo (Travel size) Tissues (Travel Pack) Tylenol/Advil (travel size) Miscellaneous Items Crossword Puzzle Books Sudoku Books CDs DVDs (new and used) Magazines (Fairly Recent) Socks (cushioned, white, calf-high) Additional Information: No aerosol cans or solid stick deodorant The Dollar Store in the 91 st & Metcalf Shopping Center is a great place to buy items at a good price. LIONS CAN BRING ITEMS TO MEETINGS ON OCTOBER 14 or OCTOBER 28. Can t shop? A monetary donation will be a great help. School nurses can contact Beverly Nichols to have items picked up. Contact Beverly at or taximath@aol.com WE WILL USE THE NOVEMBER 11 MEETING AS A WORKING MEETING TO INVOLVE ALL CLUB MEMBERS AND OTHERS WHO WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN PACKING THE BOXES. This meeting will be at Legacy Christian Church Antioch, overland park. A continental breakfast will be available at 8 a.m.. A short meeting will begin at 8:15, followed by work time.
