The epot states a $0.60 pe night pofit, not counting the tansactions made at football games, the ASCT Rock Concet, o the like. This figue is phenomenal compaed to a $5.18 loss pe night fo thid tem last yea. Actually, howeve, expenditues topped sales by $ This was because $ in inventoy (enough supplies fo the est of the yea) was puchased and stoed duing the tem. The figues, howeve, ae deceiving. Although the Coffeehouse is doing bette than eve befoe, cedit fo this achievement is due only to the efficiency of the manages and the geneosity of the nstitute. This yea the nstitute absobed the cost of electicity, gas, and wate at the Coffeehouse. At the same time, the manages wee povided with fee housing facilities in the second floo of the Coffeehouse. These advantages, coupled with a 25% incease in pofit ove last yea's figues, ae what eally made the diffeence. The citical poblem ight now is lack of inteest in the Coffeehouse. n the wods of the epot: "Student inteest in the Coffeehouse is at a new low. Business pe night is only theefifths of what it was last yea, and less than half what it was upon opening two yeas ago, when the losses wee the lagest they have eve been. n shot, financial manipulation by the manages and sacifices fom the nstitute have enabled a tenuous balance to be stuck in the Coffeehouse finances, with cteclining student inteest." Theepenny Opea Picked; Tyouts to Stat T uesda y by Tom Maket ASCT Bings Mimes Sponsoed by ASCT, the San Fancisco Mime Toupe will pefom its new commedia dell' ate satie, "The Face of Patelin," Sunday, Januay 19, 2:00 p.m. on the Athehaeum Lawn. Tickets, $1.00, ae on sale at the Beckman ticket office and in the Houses. The play is adapted fom a 15th centuy Fench face (anonymous) and was diected by Sanda Ache. Billiant Patein tells the stoy of two schemes, each of whom, in tying to cheat the othe, gets caught in his own web, and a simpleton who tuns out to be the maste scheme. One scheme has a cunning wife behind him, and a dimwitted judge neithe sheds light no dispenses justice. The play depicts the wold of man as uled by jungle law, and the chaactes' esemblance to vaious animals, in the pesent poduction, is not accidental. The Toupe has not updated the text, as it does with most plays: "We have kept the antiquated details," says Toupe diecto R. G. Davis, "to point up the ionic fact that, in essentials, this play is as tue now as Caltech's poduction of The Theepenny Opea is pogessing apidly. The ASCT Boad of Diectos has budgeted 700 dollas to poduce the play, the PCC Dama Depatment has ageed to supply the necessay actesses, and the poduction staff has been chosen and at wok fo moe than a month. nitial casting of the ASCT Musical will begin next week followed soon by eheasals. The pefomances will take place on May 23 and 24 in Beckman Auditoium. Next week's tyouts, fo male oles only, will be open exclusively to Caltech students. Thee is a challenging list of majo pats as well as a numbe of small but impotant oles to be filled. The tyouts will be conducted by Leonidas Guibas (Ru) and Bob Lewis (F), co-diectos of the musical; Glenn Pestwich (L1) and Dan Nemze (B1), vocal diectos; and D. William Cozat, faculty advise to The Theepenny Opea. Tyouts fo acting and singing will be held at 4:00 p.m. and afte dinne on Januay 21, 22, and 24 in Culbetson Hall and on Januay 23 at 4 p.m. in Culbetson and at 7:30 p.m. in Winnett Cluboom ]. Time Ceeps n Although the play is set in England in the 1830's, befoe and duing the coonation of Queen Vic to i a, the chaactes in Becht's satiic mastepiece ae vitually timeless. The men of the musical ae thieves and beggas, totally diseputable people whose cynical view of the wold is an indictment of ou society and whose way of life is a bitte paody of ou ideals. The "heo," Macheath (Mac' the Knife), is a suave, tough adventue, the most successful bandit of the London steets and the most enthusiastic suppote of' the London bothels. He is both smooth and cuel, an adent love and a talented mudee. Anothe significant chaacte is Jonathon Jeemiah Peachum, the entepising oganize of the London beggas. While a man as fond of money as Macheath, Peachum appeas to be fond of little else. He is heatless enough to tun in his own son-in-law fo a suitable ewad, and does so when Macheath maies his daughte. Finally, Macheath's it was in the 15th centuy - in tems of people's motives and the way they opeate, humanity hasn't made a lot of pogess." An oiginal (and unusually pesented) naative famewok, howeve, povides a moden point of view. The poduction emphasizes gotesque elements, but keeps the boad facical style of the commedia dell'ate, in which the point is to delive shap and sometimes weighty meaning wit h 0 u t sacificeing comedy. Becomes Dean A student evolution is sweeping the county! Supise? The public, howeve, misappehends the natue of the evolt and ovely ea c t s to publicized violence. The evolution is a good thing. Students ae efusing to accept dogmatic policies; they want education to be moe elevant to life's poblems - This is how D. Robet A. Huttenback, who will become Dean of Students next Septembe, views the academic climate. Huttenback decies people who ignoe students' poposals. All ove the county student conceived pogams ae poving youth's competence. "Students demand to be involved in thei own education," Huttenback says. He feels the Caltech community should join moe in this evolution. Not enough students "Know Thyself" Theme of YMCA Psych Pogam "A JOURNEY NTO SELF AN ENCOUNTER WTH OTHERS" is the way the Caltech YMCA is billing a seies of pogams beginning this tem. He cites the Reseach Poject as an excellent example of student dissatisfaction. "Students today ae unwilling to postpone (academic) gatification," he believes. Open Suggestion Box How does a dean of students fit into this academic tend? Huttenback thinks that he should be a kind of eceptacle fo student equests. The administation should be sympathetic to such poposals. A dean shouldn't be a guy to talk to just when a student gets a blue-slip, o acts impopely, o has some othe specific poblem - he should be someone to come to with gipes (and not just complaints about the food sevice). Huttenback would like to be an advocate of the students, a peson able to implement thei ideas. But he wants moe ideas fom students, because as Maste of Student Houses he has often been the oiginato of changes. Obseving that the Dean's office is athe emote fom student quates, he feels discussion may be impoved by olive-walk talkins. He would like to destoy the authoitaian myth, and emphasize that a dean is an agitato fo change, not just a peson enfocing an aleady existent policy (although that is pat of the job). He is opposed to physical violence, but this' does not eliminate dastic change though vebal confontation. The Human Scientist Huttenback wants moe involvement in infomal education at Caltech, a geate discussion of the human ats and intepesonal communication. He poposes a geate integation of undegaduate and gaduate student bodies. Huttenback was chosen fo his new post on the ecommendation of a special faculty committee (which consulted somewhat with students). Anothe (the same?) committee is still busy finding his successo. D. 2 Page Two Editoial Cads? Student Cads? f all has gone well, Gentle Reade, you will have eceived you student body cad by now. Maybe. The ASCT cads ae only two weeks late this tem, which is a vast impovement ove last tem. But couldn't we do just a ittle bette? Especially when the nstitute is making them moe impotant than eve befoe. f you ae stopped by one of the campus police, it is expected that you can poduce identification poving that you ae a student. You may be equied to poduce simila idel'ltification in the libay. Many of the local stoes will give you discounts on puchases, but only if you can pove that you ae a student. Finally, most of the spoting events held equie some sot of student identification (unless you ike paying fo tickets). All these situations equie that you have a student body cad. So why don't we have them when we need them? Pesently, the student body cads ae pinted up once each tem (hopefully fo the next tem, but not always). Thee is no eason why they cannot be pinted fo all thee tems at one time. The plates exist; all that is changed is the date and, once a yea, the name of the ASCT pesident. Thee is no eason why the cads cannot be pinted up as soon as the new pesident is elected, and then distibuted at egistation. Pehaps, when you hand you white cad and money to the cashie in Dabney Lounge, she could hand you a student body cad. t would be fa easie than distibuting them to each house, and having to povide a cental location whee off campus membes can pick up thei cads. An altenate suggestion is that some sot of photo-pinted cad be used with the student's pictue on it. This would cost moe but would be a geat help to the secuity foces hee. Such identification could pove to be vey useful. The speed at which the feshmen ae pocessed and photogaphed when they aive shows that such a scheme is not only feasible, but highly efficient. None of these altenatives have yet been intoduced, and thee is a final consideation. Why should ASCT pay fo these cads in the fist place:> At the pesent time, the nstitute is making fa moe use of the cads than ASCT. Fo this eason, we ae not epimanding the Rep at Lage fo the inefficiencies in cad distibution. We don't feel that it should be his job at all! Now that the cads have become so impotant to the secuity of the nstitute, thee is no eason why the nstitute should not pay fo them. Alan Stein Dave Lewin Dolla Diplomacy Once again it is the season fo senios and gad students to be seduced by industy. Recuites ae aiving on campus in doves to hie June gads, and to take on some summe help. Repesentatives come fom all industies, govenment, and even univesities. Some of the moe noted oganizations ae the CA, the FB, and Dow Chemical. The fist and last of these ae often the taget of demonstations because of thei connections with the moe unsavoy aspects of Ameican foeign policy. Thei pesence on college campuses is anathema to a segment of faculty and students. While we deploe the use of napalm, and the activities of the CA, we do not believe thee is a simple matte of "moality" in whethe o not they ae allowed to inteview on campus. The defendes of the inteviewes pose it a "ight to ecuit", an aspect of fee speech, and the opposition attacks this alleged ight on moal gounds. We feel that ecuitment is a sevice of the univesity to industy and govenment, not a ight pe se. f the students decided that ecuiting was objectionable, then it should be abolished, banished fom the campus. But when feelings have isen to that stage, lack of usage of placement sevices would have aleady indicated dissatisfaction to the school, and to the potential employes. Recuitment can be pat of fee speech if the ecuites ae available to discuss, in public foum, with individuals who disappove of the actions of thei oganizations. f the epesentatives of these goups, paticulaly Dow and the CA, ae unwilling to engage in fee debate, then a potest of thei pesence is legitimate. "We use it because it is popula, fee, engaging, and a d apt a b e." Black Coffee (Continued fom pa.ge 1) Mike Stefanko, one of the fou manages of the Coffeehouse, pointed out that lack of inteest existed on the administative level, too. Of ove one hunded meetings of clubs and othe activities pe month held hee at Caltech, only the meetings of the Totem staff ae held at the Coffeehouse. Stefanko emphasized that inceased use of the Coffeehouse as a meeting place could mean loweed menu costs, bette sevice, and an enhanced social atmosphee. To impove student inteest this tem, the manages ae ahout to launch this yea's Memheship Mug Dive. Cost of the mugs will be $5.00 fo students and staff and $10.00 fo faculty. The manages ae also consideing poviding othe additional henefits to membes only. As fa as othe activities at the Coffeehouse ae concened, the policy of the manages is that all they can do is povide the atmosphee and wait fo the inteest. nteest neve came fo the hootenannies, so they had to be cancelled. Although magazines and guitas ae available at all times at the Coffeehouse, few customes utilize them. n summay, the manages egisteed this geneal comment: "While its financial situation is at least stable, the Coffeehouse's geneal (in a wod, social) situation is still weak. Ou clientele is small, consisting in geat pat of a few 'egulas,' ou opeation, aside pehaps fom the geneal question of ou continued solvency, is of little geneal inteest, ou menu is fequently sconed, and citicisms ae infinitely easie to come by than help. We still maintain that ou menu items ae of easonable good quality at geneally easonable pices; bette buys ae not easy to find. We ae tying to divesify the menu. What moe can we do? This is you Coffeehouse, not ous. A little inteest goes a long way."

3 ~-~~ Thusday, Januay 16, 1969 Toweing by Dave Dixon 'l'ogethe, the '\'atts 103d Steet Rhythm Band, Repise Recods, about $3.00 The Watts 103d Steet Rhythm Band comes on nice and loose in thei second album Togethe. t was ecoded live at the Haunted House in Hollywood and is set up as a live album in fomat although it sounds like a studio album in its ecoding quality. Togethe is a geat dance album done by a vey competent soul band. The band oiginated as Bill Cosby's back-up goup and is vey complete, with no supe-stas. "Soy Chalie" gives the ecod a good stat with its slow hluesy beat with lots of hons. The ecod continues at the same level of quality fo its entiety. The disc has a vaied composition. Thee ae old soul favoites such as "Something You Got" and "Papa's Got a Band New Hag." These ae done well as is thei soul vesion of the Stones' "Satisfaction." "Phunky Bill" has a good saxophone solo on it ljy Bill Cannon, while "Get Ready" has a good tumpet solo. Thee ae also two nice beating slow songs. "My Summe's Gone" and " Wake Up Cying." My two favoites ae the two instumentals "65 Bas and a Taste of Soul" and "Giggin Down 103d." The ecod ends with "Do You Thing" which is what the band does and it does it well. The Pen tan,g e, Repise l'pcods, about $3.50. The Pentangle is a new English supe-goup. Howeve, it is not a tue ock goup. t is essentially a combination of folk, jazz, and ock and oll in a vey pleasant mixtue. But Jansch and John Renbon ae the two lead guitaists. Both play excellent acoustic leads. t is thei wok along with the voice of Jacqui McShee that makes the album inteesting. The guita wok on The Pen- 695 E. COLORADO BLVD PASADENA _----' ' Eaful tangle, thei fist album, is Oiental-like and the beaks move well. Thei majo dawback is that the guita solos occasionally sound epetitive. Jacqui McShee has a folk voice on the Judy Collins-Joni Mitchell line. Howeve she has moe ange than Miss Collins and he voice swoops though songs. She can also sing the blues and this is seen on "Way Beyond the Sun" which is the fastest cut on the album. Whose Rosemay? The album begins with "Let No Man Steal You Thyme" which seves as an intoduction to the goup, especially Jacqui VicShee. "Bells," the second cut has the best guita solos on the album and along with "Way Behind the Sun" ae my favoite songs. But Jansch's guita wok is especially evident hee. The dum solo is good but is definitely not geat. t detacts fom the est of the song. "Hea My Call" and "Miage" ae the two othe songs in which Jacqui is the dominating facto. "Pent angling" is a showcase fo the guitas again and also fo Danny Thompson, who plays' a supisingly good sting bass. This song is a club jazz song. The album ends with "Buton Town" done in an old English ballad style and "Waltz," an extemely ceative instumental. "Waltz" has a fantastic piece of acoustic guita lead which is like some of the sounds poduced by the Pink Floyd and The Who. The album ends with an expeiment and this is pehaps the best definition of the album. t is expeimental fusion that comes off. The Book of Taliesyn, by The Deep Puple, Tetagammaton, about $3.00. The Deep Puple is a medioce teeny-boppe goup. Thei second album, The Book of Taliesyn, shows' this to thei fullest extent. t is a boing album in thei selection of songs and in thei musical talents. They find it moe elegant, and vastly moe pofitable, to foce thei opponents to finesse themselves. Today's hand illustates this theme. The bidding of this hand eflected ove-optimism by both Noth and South. Noth's fee aise to two heats is questionable, since the bidding could hadly be expected to die out at one spade. South's call of fou heats is even moe questionable, since his hand should be devalued because of the tenaces in font of the ovecalle. South's fou heat call closed the auction, since East-West had no oppotunity to find thei laydown five club contact. West's opening lead was the ten of diamonds, a athe poo choice, since the contact is set two on the lead of ace and anothe spade. The spade lead should be found, since spade uffs seem to be the only chance to set the contact. Howeve, South won the opening diamond lead and cashed the ace of heats, discoveing the bad split. South then cashed a second high heat and the act of diamonds, and led to the queen of heats, dawing the last tump. A thid diamond was then uffed and low spade led to the king, West coectly playing low since the play of the ace loses immediately. The fouth diamond was then uffed in the closed hand, completing the stip, and the queen of spades was led. The competition is especially noticeable hetween the feshman and sophomoe classes, but it can be seen between any two of the classes. t's a tadition. Now thee is a way to compae all of the classes in a easonably statistical way. Remembe the tests you took on egistation day the fist tem? Well, the esults ae in. Not only that, but have in my posses "ion the esults fo all fou classes. (Gleeful laughte in the backgound.) So hee comes the final battle. Actually, will not even petend to be unbiased. will e "tict myself to actual statistics at all times hut you all know which class 'm tying to favo, t doesn't do me much good though. 1 discoveed that the questions wee changed each yea, so it was vey difficult to find any questions that wee asked enough yeas in a ow to fom a compaison. Of couse, the most inteesting questionf-; wee epeated the fewest timef-;. f Not ihaiage? Fo instance, thee wee the statistics on maiage and dating, which of couse is the most inteesting question of all. diso coveed the vey inteesting fact that the senio class seemed significantly moe eady to get maied than the junio class. This album taces the best music of the Association fom "Along Comes May" to "Six Man Band." Fo those Association fans who also happen to be wod feaks, the lyics to all thiteen cuts ae pinted on the album. They don't pull one of these twelv~minutes-pe-side dealies, eithe. Thee ae ove thity-seven minutes of music on the album, and all of it is good. Sometimes, like in "Requiem fo the Masses," the Association waxes philosophical, while at othe times, fast moving happiness eigns, as in "Windy." The quiet songs ae thee, too, such as "Neve My Love" and "Cheish." With the exceptionf-; of "Windy", "Along Comes May", "Neve My Love", and "Time fo Living''', all of the,;ongs wee witten by goup memhes. Tey Kikman, goup leade, wote many of the songs, including "Requiem fo the Masses" and "Cheish." His lyics ae excellent, if sometimes a bit,.;tange. n "Requiem," the chous includes the lines "You flag is flying fulll At half mast. fo the matados/who tuned thei backs to please the cowell And all fell befoe the bull." Anothe inteesting compaison i-: that in hoth the junio and,;ophomoe classes, only about 2.6% had smoked a cigaette befoe coming to Caltech. The feshman class, when asked the same question, epoted only 1.6% had peviously tied cigaettes. n othe colleges acoss the county, the junio class had anked the highest in that quesion. But in othe univesities, depending on the yea, thee wee between ten and seventeen p cent who had tied smoking befoe college. (Wonde why Caltech is so special?) Rich J{id~'? The most significant statistic. which was epeated fo each class, the aveage income of ou paents. t appeas that with each class, the aveage income aises slightly. And at the same time, the feshman class almost managed to get in the same amount of' activities as the junio class. Almo-:t but neve quite enough. The numbe of people who pefe a Potestant denomination goes down a vey little with each class. On the othe hand, those who pefe Roman Catholicism to othe eligions have been going up slightly evey yea. That is, until this yea when the pecentage did dop slightly. The numhe pefeing the Jewish faith eached a maximum in the junio class, hut has gone down eve since until now it is half of what it was. The mo-:t inteesting fact is that the numhe of those who have no eligious pefeence at all was deceasing steeply each yea until the feshman class when it inceased fom 29.7o/ to 42.4%.
