1 Psych Sevices - pages 8,9 VOLXX,NO. 104 the independent student nnvspapc seving note Jame and saint may's 1HURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1985 Novelist ving peviews new novel fo capacity cowd By JOHN WALTERS News Staff The fathe of"gap" intoduced a goup of ophans to a standingoom-only cowd at the libay auditoium last night. John ving, the intenationallyknown autho whose cedits include "The Wold Accoding To Gap" and "Hotel New Hampshie", was the featued speake fo the fouth night of the Sophomoe liteay Festival. ving, along with Geoge Hunt, edito-in-chief of Ameica magazine, attacted this yea's festival's lagest audience by fa. His pesentation consisted pimaily of eading fom the fist chapte of his fothcoming novel, "The Cide House Rules." The, novel, slated fo a june elease, concens the elationship between an obstetician/ophanage diecto, D. Wilbu Lach, and the ophan fo whom he is unable to find a home, Home Wells. t is a stoy about thei love and what eventually dives them apat. ving, a native of New Hampshie cuently esiding on Long sland, opened with an explanation of his novel's title. "t efes to the cide houses of a New England apple ochad," he said. "The migant wokes would live in the houses, and the ochad owne would type up set ules fo the migants to obey." He cited a few of the ules as "Please don't dink," "Please don't sit on the oof," and "Please don't dink while sitting on the oof." ving was an apple ochad foeman in his youth, and noticed that the migants neve obeyed the posted "cide house ules" because they did not know how to ead. He bought this to the attention of the ochad owne who esponded, "That's no excuse fo not following the ules." "The Cide House Rules" itself has nothing to do with apples ochads o migant wokes, howeve; instead, it is a histoical text concening ophanages fom the peiod ving's inspiation came fom eading the texts of his gandfathe, an obstetician duing this time. He found these medical texts of a smalltown docto anecdotal enough to incopoate into a stoy. The stoy is set in the once poud logging-camp community of St. Cloud's, Maine. "Fist came the logging mill, then the vagants, then the thugs, and at last thee was a chuch," ead ving. Thee times Home is given to foste f.unilies, with each family moe bizae than the last. At his thid home, the abode of Pofesso and Mum Dape, Home naowly escapes sexual molestation fom Mum's gandson by cying out. When Mum uns to the bedoom to investigate, the boy eveses the stoy, explaining to his gandmothe, "He tied to bugge me, so him have it." Geoge Hunt, a Jesuit who has witten majo citical analyses on the woks of John Updike and John Cheeve, adessed the audience pio to ving. He spoke of Updike's woks and discussed liteay techniques. Novelist john ving, autho of "The Wold Accoding to Gap," ead the fist chapte of his up- 1lw Ol»evc/Jolwmes Hocke coming novel last night at the Sophomoe Liteay Festival. Stoy at left. N.Y. politician Lehman speaks on faith, family, U.S. Constitution By KAREN mompson and HARDY LEWS News Staff Lewis Lehman, mentioned as a possible dak-hose candidate fo the 1988 Republican pesidential nomination and naowly defeated by Maio Cuomo in the New Yok gubenatoial ace, spoke last night on "Faith, Family, and the Ameican Constitution." Lehman, chaim~ of "Citizens Fo Ameica," stated that Ameica is the "peeminent standad-beae of the code of Judeo-Chistian civilization." The membes of "Citizens Fo Ameica" have begun a majo push in suppot of the govenment costcutting ecommendations of the Gace Commission, which favos a. balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, and will continue its effots in suppot of aid to Cental Ameica. n his speech, Lehman made efeence to the bishops' lette denouncing povety. He ageed with thei conclusion, but expessed dissent with thei means of achieving it. "While agee with the bishops' motives, the means to that goal lie deep in the democatic way of life - fee economy," he said. Lehman uged his audience to be "attentive to the just claims of the least among us." He advocated a low simple tax ate and favoably compaed Ameican fee entepise to the Social-Democatic welfae states of Westen Euope. On the Ameican family, Lehman claimed that ecent legislation has shifted the buden of taxes to the middle-income family with two to fou childen. This facto, he said,'" is educing the Ameican family." Lehman, who ecently helped launch a petition effot in suppot of a simplified tax code, also added that, "Eveything am, and eveything could eve be ises up fom the simple fact that am an Ameican." Bishop McManus pesents two opinions of U.S. economy 1lw Obocvc/Johannco Hacke Fot Wayne-South Bend Bishop William McManus makes a point last duing his speech on the lette "Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy." Stoy at ight. ByMARGARETC~ON News Staff Bishop William McManus of the Fot Wayne-South Bend diocese pesented the bishops' views on the Ameican economy as well as those of the "othe side" duing his talk last night in Howad Hall's chapel. The bishop's talk was made possible by Howad's eligious commission leade, Mak Bombe, with the assistance of the hall's ecto, Fathe Eugene Goski. Defending the bishops' involvement in economics, McManus said, "Bishops should make a stand on ecomonics. Jesus Chist addessed himself to economics. Fo a second eason, bishops seek to addess the evil of widespead wealth distibution." McManus added that peaching on economics "is not an innovation. t's vey much in the Biblical tadition of the Chuch." He also expessed a desie "fo the beginnings of a pastoal council with lay men and women pooling thei ideas." The bishops' stance defending Chuch involvement in economics, accoding to McManus, is that "economics is subject to a highe moal law. Unemployment is a hideous evil and ginds a peson down. Decisions of economics must be based on what they do to and fo people, not to what they do to and fo stock and copoate stuctues." The bishops' stance defending Chuch involvement in economics, accoding to McManus, is that "economics is subject to a highe moal law. Unemployment is a hideous evil and ginds a peson down. Decisions of economics must be based on what they do to and fo people, not to what they do to and fo stock and copoate stuctues." The opposing view, which aticulates the bishops' citicism of the cuent administation's ole in Ameican economics, is that "the best economics is unestained economics - Reagan's supply-side economics and the tickle-down theoy. n othe wods, let it be." McManus summaized the bishops' opposite opi, nion concening govenment intevention, saying, "Govenment should ceate jobs so that people ae not sitting idle, otting at home. (What is needed) is less unemployment and moe jobs." McManus also pointed out the opposition's opinion that ceating jobs would cause taxes to ise, job oppotunities in the pivate secto to diminish, and moe unemployment to esult. "Fom thei (the govenment's) point of view the best thing to do would be to say, 'Face it, it's an immoal system,"' McManus said. "The bishops epudiate the idea that it would be bette to leave these (poo) people as they ae than to let the govenment intevene." Afte the speech, McManus was questioned on his ecently announced esignation. Citing age as the pimay facto, McManus eplied, "t's a tadition fo bishops in the Chicago aea to esign soon afte they each the age of 70. This gives the younge ones a chance to move up."

They have planned and oganized SO events to date, almost of which have been well-attended and, umo has it, a lot of fun. Ask almost any sophomoe what he o she thinks of this yea's class offices and he o she will tell you "They'e geat." Few othe banches of student govenment can claim this kind of enthusiasm. Jim Domagalski, Ann Jennings, Mak Foley and Dave Miklos have oganized what is possibly the most successful banch of student govenment this yea. They have a foce of OS sophomoes woking unde them on vaious committees, and claim nealy pefect attendance at the biweekly meetings of thei Sophomoe AdviSoy Council. "We tied to see how we could get the most efficiency fom the most people," says Domagalski, sophomoe class pesident. Jennings, the vice pesident, and Domagalski say they owe a geat deal ofthei success to thei staff. "The dom eps ae geat," says Jennings. These fou offices may owe a geat deal to thei staff, but the success of the staff owes at least as much to the people who oganized it. Jennings and Domagalski say they built the five-committee stuctue unde which they now opeate fom scatch. "We inteviewed OS people fo sophomoe class commissiones, and we gave all of them a job," said Domagalski. Because most sophomoes ae not yet 21, class events must be nonalcoholic. t equies a bit moe ceativity to plan such events, but the sophomoe class has poved equal to this challenge. Moe than 850 students attended last month's Supe Bowl suitcase paty, at which two sophomoes wee awaded tips to the game. The sophomoes also sponsoed an ovenight tip to Chicago which involved moe than 1 SO students and a Chistmas paty featuing a hose-dawn sleigh ide. This class has also managed to add a new twist to standad events. Fo example, they hied a belly dance to pefom at one of thei study beaks. Jennings and Amy Stephan Poject Manage TONGHT!! Domagalski say the aveage attendance at class events is 200 to 250 students. But the success of this goup is not limited to a few geat paties. They've displayed ceativity n the aea of sevice as well. Nealy evey sophomoe who has spent time in the infimay has eceived a flowe, a cad and a phone call coutesy of the sophomoe class. This weekend, the sophomoes ae sponsoing a CPR cetification pogam. Pehaps the most impotant element in the success of this administation has been communication. "f you plan geat events and don't tell anyone about them," said Domagalski, "it's like winking at a gil in the dak. t doesn't do any good." To impove communication, sophomoe class offices have coveed the campus with postes, elied on dom eps to spead the news of impotant events, sent out a newslette (The Sophomoe Scoop) and even issued inivitations to evey sophomoe fo majo events. How much does it cost to sponso so many events, a majoity of which ae fee? The sophomoe class has eceived $1,700 pe semeste fom student fees. Compae this to the $122,000 budget unde which the Student Activities Boad functions and the accomplishments of this class become even moe impessive. This yea's offices of the class of '87 pove tue the statement that we've head so many times and neve quite believed - student govenment can make a diffeence. The ceativity, enthusiasm and had wok of the sophomoe class govenment has helped unify the class and povided a lot of fun fo a lot of people. Candidates fo next yea's class offices would do well to keep this n mind as they open thei campaigns. t's not the system, no the almighty Note Dame Administation that makes student govenment what it is. t's the people. The gant was issued to the Univesity as a esult of a poposal initiated and witten in a joint effot by Pofessos Albin Szewczyk, Raymond Bach, and James Kamman, all of the aeospace and mechanical engineeing depatment. Accoding to Bach, obotics is often misintepeted as the ceation of obots, when it is actually "an industial obot that is likened to an am, one that has seveal joints along with extension and gipping capabilities." The am is completely contolled by compute pogamming which allows fo geate vesatility. This machine has become a popula mechanic device used thoughout vaious automotive plants to eplace manual labo. The Univesity has aleady eceived the fist allocation of the S250,000, which is being distibuted ove a thee-yea time peiod, and is now in the planning stage ofthe lab itself. The new saeli-egyptian moves came at a time when Jo dan and PLO chaiman Yasse Aafat have ageed on a joint negotiating stategy on the Middle East. Neithe side gave details of the unusually long audience. t was John Paul's fist with a Kemlin official since the matial law cackdown in his native Poland in 1981 and the attempt on his life, which some epots have linked to the Soviet secet police. Gomyko, 75, got a ed-capet welcome fo his fist visit to the Vatican in six yeas. He said it was a "good" meeting, and that the ques tion of a papal visit to the Soviet Union did not come up. John Paul, 64, said last yea that he had been denied pemission to visit lithuania, a stongly Roman Catholic epublic in the Soviet Union. John Paul geeted Gomyko in Russian, and the Soviet official assued the pontiff of his "best wishes" in English at the end of the meeting. The pope appeaed elaxed and both men wee smiling when epotes and photogaphes wee usheed into the papal libay. Pesenting his gift of a smali lacqueed box to John Paul, Gomyko said, "t's a small memento, as the ~eicans say." Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navao said only that the two men discussed "peace in the wold and the situation of Catholics in the So viet Union." Advance expectations wee that Gomyko would seek papal suppot fo the Kemlin campaign against Pesident Reagan's space-based defense poposal, commonly called Sta Was, and that John Paul would pess his guest about eligious libety in the Soviet Union. 6 - ~ ~ Vi ew~_o_i_n_t Th_unday_,_Fe_buay-28_, 1_9s_s-:_pag_e_6 Educational financing appeas as total disaste By Mach, many of us will have filed the Financial Aid Fom. This elaboate document helps detemine a student's eligibility fo both Univesity-based aid, such as Note Dame Scholaships, and Fedeal pogams like Pell Gants, Supplemenul Educational Oppotunity Gants, National Diect Student Loans, John Peez just wondeing and Guaanteed Student Loans. Ove half of Note Dame's students eceive some kind of financial assistance. ndeed, the Financial Aid Office has calculated that a typical Dome shelled out nealy Sll,OOO to attend Note Dame in this academic yea - a significant sum by anyone's standads. Financial aid, in the fom of gants, loans, and jobs is fo many a key to footing this substantial bill. Unfotunately, this pictue may change fo the wose if newly-appointed Secetay of Education William Bennett gets his way. Bennett, a had-line Reaganomics suppote, wants to slash funding fo fedeal student aid pogams. Accoding to syndicated columnist Ellen Goodman, Bennett sees the typical college student as a "ca-owning, steeo-buying, beach-hopping youngblood with books... a vaiation on the theme of the Cadillac-diving welfae mothe." The Secetay insists that if his poposals ae enacted, some students might just have to "tade down fom pivate schools to public ones" o tempoaily delay thei education. Families would just have to "tighten the belt." Ganted, one side effect of financial aid pogams is the gowing student "debt bomb." Govenment statistics show that about 60 pecent of full-time undegaduate students boow at least some money to cove thei educational expenses. The aveage loan is fo $2,200 a yea, fo a total of about S8,800 of debt by gaduation time. Gaduate students face an even tighte cunch. Fo example, lawyes and doctos aveage fom S30,000 to S40,000 of debt by the time they begin thei pactices. This, cetainly, is a temendous buden. t s, howeve, a buden we assume voluntaily in pusuit of what we hope ae gate ewads: knowledge and satisfying employment. To deny qualified students access to educational funds meely to "tim a little fat" fom the budget while we send millions of dollas in so-called covet aid to Nicaaguan ebels and possibly 2 S2.2 billion in aid to sael, would be ludicous. The student eceiving aid is in a "Catch-22" situation. The pice of education and the pice of non-education ae both quite high. What can be done to ease this painful situation, to wean highe education off loan dependancy? t is obvious that cutting student aid is not the answe. Neithe would it be fai to buden citizens with still highe taxes. The only altenative is to develop new ways to finance highe education. These altenatives would necessaily involve govenment, educational institutions, and students. One possible help, albeit athe indiect, would involve govenment faming out moe of its eseach and development activities to the nation's colleges and univesities. They could pobably do it fo less than the govenment itself o pivate industies. The esulting incease in cash flow to the schools would seve as an incentive to hold the line on o to educe tuition and fees as well as povide income fo students in the fom of campus wok-study oppotunities. A moe diect appoach would involve aid in exchange fo sevice. n a manne akin to that of ROTC scholaships, govenmental units o pivate fims could povide gants in exchange fo an employment commitment to that agency. Students would be able to affod an education, the nation would get highly qualified public sevants, and industy would get qualified employees in etun. Suggestions fo changing o othewise impoving the financial aid pictue could fill this entie newspape and dozens moe. One thing is clea: the pesent system of educational financing is a disaste -a total mess. Cutting aid pogams will only make this mess that much wose. Action needs to be taken now: by govenment, schools, industy, and students alike. Othewise, the numbe of pesons in this county who will benefit fom highe education will plummet. We will all be the wose off fo it. The cente assisted appoximately 1300 students last yea on eithe an individual o goup basis o in the wokshop fomat. Utz states, though, that pecentage wise, the cente was at the lowe end of usage compaed to simila institutions at othe colleges. He explains that this is in pat due to the counseling that is made available though hall ectos as well as the sevices offeed by the Feshman Yea of Studies, which helps feshmen adjust to the pocess of coming to college. Utz uges people to come to the cente if they ae having a poblem but aen't sue if counseling is necessay. Some signs to look fo, though. ae n academic pefomance. Studying longe to maste the same aiount of mateial o missing test questicns to which the student knew the answes ae symptoms of a high level of anxiety which may get out of contol. Accoding to the natue of the poblem, the cente might well efe a student to othe depatments on campus such as the Univesity Ministy, the Caee and Placement Cente o the infimay fo a medical evaluation. " would like no one to have to use ou sevices, but that is unealistic," Utz explains, "Thee ae moe people who could pofit than just those who ae using them. We'e hoping that a moe positivt image (of the cente) will get the.n to take advantage of the sevices without a stigma being associated with it." $evices at the cente ae offeed on a minimal fee scale stating at pe session. Accoding to D. Haod Geenwald, autho of The Happy Peson, only you can decide what makes you happy. And now, with his book, you can begin to make it happen. The back cove of the book makes this pitch: "You'll be able to detemine, pehaps fo the fist time in you life, exactly what would make you a happy peson; how to get id of the life decisions, conscious o unconscious, which ae holding you back. Most impotant - you'll find you own altenatives to the self-destuctive behavio that's causing you poblems. Within youself you'll discove the esouces to heal you pains and ovecome you most paalyzing feas." That sounds like a petty monumental task, but actually Geenwald appoaches it in a simple seven-step plan illustated with pesonal case studies and soul-seaching questions. n the fist place, happy people don't see themselves as the victims in thei life stoies. They choose to be happy by tuning poblems on thei heads, using them to thei advantage. Howeve impotant extenal factos like health, physical appeaance and upbinging may be, they don't have to detemine the happiness quotient in anyone's life stoy. Quite simply, the way we expeience ou lives is up to us. f you see a situation in you life as a poblem, that's what it is- a poblem. f you see it as an oppotunity, it can suddenly look and feel vey diffeent. Step One of Geenwald's plan is to decide what you want in ode to be happy o happie. You want to be happy, but what does that mean to you? What do you eally want? You need to develop a specific goal to wok fo. Step Two involves finding the decision behind the poblem. n othe wods, descibe the poblems you have in eaching you goal. Howeve, avoid judging you behavio at all costs. To be a good theapist to youself, you must ecognize that conqueing youself is an impossible task. No one judges you as seveely as you judge youself. Lean to fogive youself. Step lbee of the plan is finding the context fo the oiginal decision. Ask youself when it was made. Tacing behavio back to an oiginal decision is a little like solving a mystey and can help in shaking off happiness-blocking behavio. Step Fou includes listing the payoffs fo the decision. D. Geenwald advises you to look at it this way: no matte how unhappy life has been fo you so fa, you have suvived. You have_ coped. And you can, if you choose, sweeten things fo youself. Step Five calls fo an examination of you altenatives to the behavio that is causing the poblem. Stop taking youself so seiously. Decide to look at you altenatives. Relax. Thee's no deadline, no contact. Step Six involves choosing you altenative and putting it into pactice. Don't be afaid to tust youself. D. Geenwald counsels that it eally doesn't matte whethe o not the est of the wold defines you pupose as a mighty one. Just deciding to be happy constitutes a teific contibution to the wold. Step Seven, the final stide, you lean to suppot youself in caying out the new decision. Allow youself flexibility. Afte all, old habits die had. Remembe that a slip back into you old behavio does not mean you ae a failue o the decision was bad. Acknowledge you lapse and continue caying out the decision. Don't hesitate to each out to fiends and family fo additional suppot. The Happy Peson just might be you ticket to a happie life. D. Haold Geenwald's step-by-step method has a way of dawing you in and making you espond to his techniques and pobing questions befoe you even ealize it. n the book, he talks diectly to you, as an old fiend might. You begin to feel that D. Geenwald is eally pulling fo you. As the autho of The Happy Peson claims, if you feel that you life isn't woking, you owe youself this chance to be a happy peson. t could wok fo you if you let it.

"She is also vey unselfish on the cout." Due to vaious cicumstances on past Saint May's teams, Suess has been asked to play at a numbe of positions and has gacefully accepted the challenges. " had played guad all my life, ncluding my feshman yea at Saint May's," said the dual spot sta. "Duing my sophomoe yea the stating point guad left and took ove n a position had neve played befoe. Then due to a lack of height (on the team) n my junio yea had to play cente/fowad. And played fowad again this yea." He vesatility along with he concen fo team play allowed Suess to make the smooth tansitions. " had good fundamentals and was able to move whee Coach wanted me to play," she said. "Looking back, see contibuted in an aea whee was needed most." And Wood appeciated the coopeation of Suess. "Elaine is pobably a natual guad, size and ability-wise. t (switching positions) is hade than most people think. You see the game fom a diffeent pespective." Wood cedits Suess with excellent outside shooting, stong defen sive play and the ability to make g<x>d assists. But Suess has no doubts concening he favoite aspect of the game. " love to pass," says the 22-yea old, who handed out 60 assists this season. "Thee is not a bette feeling than when you make a pefect pass and a teammate gabs it and scoes fo two. " don't think scoing points is always the most impotant pat of the game," adds Suess, who also e coded 29 steals duing the season. "Thee ae so many diffeent facets. Playing good defense is one of the hadest because you've eally got to wok." Not only did Suess dish off 60 assists and gab 29 steals this season, but she also pulled down 60 ~bounds and had 167 total points on 60-of-144 shooting fom the field. She also shot 68 pecent fom the fee-thow line. two basketball invitational tounament all-sta teams he sophomoe yea. She eceived the Saint May's Coaches' Awad fo the season and also was named to the all touney team at Saint May's annual Roundball Classic that yea. As a feshman she also eaned the Saint May's Coaches' Awad fo softball. When Suess was consideing colleges, basketball was definitely in the back of he mind. " went to basketball camp at Note Dame my senio yea and the Saint May's coach talked to me. " like Saint May's because it's small and can eally become involved in a divese amount of things. Being in spots has actually impoved my gades because have to be oganized when involved in diffeent activities." Off the cout and field, Suess has made many contibutions to the Saint May's community. She has been in chage of the Adopt-a-Nun pogam fo the past thee yeas and also is co-coodinato of photogaphy fo the Saint May's yeabook this yea. Pesently, she coodinates the Spots nfomation Depatment, which woks closely with the College's Public Relations Depatment. Suess said she sees this depatment as a positive step fo Saint May's in the pomotion of ts athletic pogams. n an effot to facilitate bette communication between vasity and non-vasity athletes and between the athletic and school administations, Suess also helped to oganize the newly founded Athletic Council, on which she seves as a basketball team epesentative. On the basketball cout Suess noticed he team's own lack of communication. "One of the big things teams have to do when losing is communicate, and fo a while we wee not communicating as a team," she explains. "But think that when we ealized it was causing a poblem, we began to communicate bette and played bette." Wood emphasizes Suess' past expeience as being influential on a team compised mostly of undeclassmen. "One thing that must be noted," commented Wood, "is that Elaine is a natual leade. She sees things that need to be done, takes hold of them and gets things done." Sophomoe guad Maiclaie Discoll ageed with Wood. "She's a good leade and has helped me pesonally as fa as encouaging me and giving me confidence," said Discoll. "She tells me what do wong, but in a positive way." Although Saint May's ecod was disappointing this season, Suess said she is gateful fo fist-yea coach Wood's effots. " appeciate his enthusiasm fo the pogam," she said. "Even f we ween't doing well he tied not to let us get discouaged. He was vey positive towad the team, which was needed." Wood assessed the senio playe in one statement. "She doesn't have a lage fame but plays with a lot of heat," he said. Good things do come in small packages, and Saint May's has benefited geatly fom Elaine Suess' fou yeas of contibutions in au aspects of the College community. A 16-4 victoy ove his Maquette opponent last week put the finishing touch on a egula-season ecod and gives Kasle momentum heading into the NCAA egionals n Des Moines, owa, this weekend. Success s not new fo Kasle, who compiled a ecod at Noth Olmsted High School in Noth Olmsted, Ohio, on the westen edge of Cleveland. Seving as team captain both his junio and senio yeas, Kasle was a thee-time confeence champion, egional champion and a thid-place finishe in the state as a senio. Kasle's westling caee began at age six, inspied by his fathe, who was a high school westling coach. An inteest n westling appeas to be a common tait in the Kasle family. "My dad westled, my bothe westles, westle, my mom follows westling." says Kasle. "n fact, they've been to quite a few matches this yea." Duing his senio yea in high school, Kasle expessed inteest in Note Dame befoe he was ecuited by ish head coach Fan McCann. Since McCann was not hied until late n the school yea, he did not nte hall contact Kasle until afte he had been accepted. The eputation of the Noth Olmsted pogam convinced McCann that Kasle was a quality westle. "We didn't know him too well," says McCann. "Ken's inteest in us came fist. We based ou judgement on his high school pogam." ~i~f -~~- Ken Kasle Kasle took his fist semeste of college in stide, at least in the classoom, but he found the college westle povided much moe of a challenge than the aveage high school westle. "The college westle is a lot moe physical," says Kasle. "You see bette competition evey time out." Kasle did not know how he would fae once he aived at Note Dame, but he was optimistic. " wasn't sue how would do," says Kasle. " thought could do all ight. didn't eally know what to expect." As his fist season neas the end, Kasle's contibution to the team has on both teams. "Thee's definitely a diffeence between college coaching and high school coaching," says Kasle. "Coach McCann and coach Azevedo have shown me a lot about technique; coming out fom undeneath, escaping." The effect of the ish coaching staff on Kasle's westling has been evident as the 1 58-pounde impoved tlu-oughout the yea. McCann sees one of Kasle's attibutes as his ability to ecognize his stengths and weaknesses. "Ken utilizes his stengths and does what he has to do to win," says McCann. McCann descibes Kasle's best assets as his slickness and intelli gence. Kasle said he plans on using his talents as best he can in the next thee yeas. "'m definitely setting my goals petty high fo the next few yeas," say Kasle. "With this pogam and the coaches and the guys wee binging in 'm looking fowad to it." The goals fo the Note Dame westling pogam also ae high fo the coming yeas and it appeas Ken Kasle will be a geat aid in helping the team meet those goals. The ish will squae off against the Bulldogs at 7:35 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. a house of hoos fo many visiting teams in the past. Butle is 32-8 on its home cout ove the past two yeas, with 12 of those victoies coming this yea. The ish, with a ecod of 7-7, know they can not become anothe casualty of the Fieldhouse if they hope to continue on the oad to an NCAA Tounament bid. "We come into the week with the best ecod of all the independents," says ish head coach Digge Phelps, "so we can contol ou own destiny to a geat extent ove the last two weeks of the egula season." But befoe they can concentate on Sunday's game with Washington o on next week's cucial contests with Maquette and Dayton, the ish will have to get past the Bulldogs, who ente the matchup with a 17-8 ecod. Head coach Joe Sexson's Bulldogs ae led by sophomoe Chad Tucke. The 6-6 fowad aveages 20.4 points pe game (fist on the team), and is second on the squad with 6.0 ebounds pe game. Tucke has led Butle in scoing thiteen times this season, with his high of 33 points coming in a game against Ball State. Stating at the opposite fowad will be anothe sophomoe, 6-4 Tony Gallaha. Gallaha, a tansfe fom Texas-San Antonio, scoes at a 9.1 clip and contibutes 4. 7 ebounds pe game Backing up Tucke and Gallaha ae two newcomes to the Bulldogs. Aaon Hoove, a junio tansfe fom Modesto Junio College in Califo- ' nia, and Johnny Jones, a feshman fom Gay, nd., have filled in spaingly and have added about two points and two ebounds pe game between them. At cente, the Bulldogs stat 6-8 senio Tim Haseley. Haseley leads the team in ebounding, collecting 7.2 pe game. He also chips in with 8. points pe game. Sophomoe Mike Hape back.~ up Haseley in the middle. Hape, also 6-8, adds stength to the Bulldogs' fontcout. Although lacking in height ove: all, Butle has bet~n able to outebound its opponems by a magin of 31.8 to 30.8, a fat~t that can not be taken lightly by an ish font line that has had touble ebounding at times lately. At the guad position, the Bul!dogs ae led by sophomoe sensa tion Dain Fitzgeald. Only S-9, Fitzgeald has impoved ove an outstanding feshman yea la~t seao;<m. Fitzgeald owns an excellent outside shooting touch, one of the main easons he has been able to aveage S.8 points pe game. An excellent passe. Fitzgeald leads the team with 100 assists and 47 steals. On a pace moe befitting an NBA fanchise, the Note Dame women's basketball team will attempt to clea anothe confeence hudle tonight, as it entenains the Lady Bulldogs of Butle Univesity at 7 p.m. at the ACC. The ish, who so fa have handled the pessue of a confeence ace like pofessionals, ente the homestetch 16-8 on the season. Note Dame s 9-1 and on top in the Nonh Sta Confeence. Butle, on the othe hand, will come in with a 4-20 slate on the season, and a lastplace 1 9 in the confeence. When you ae at the top of the heap, howeve, eveyone is looking to shoot you down. And with the numbe of games the ish have played lately, they will be, at least in the Bulldogs' hopes, pime fo the picking. "The toughest thing about this game is that t will be ou thid game in five nights," says ish head coach May DiStanislao. "Plus, you get eveybody's best shot when you'e at the top." Fonunately fo the ish, Butle's "best shot" has not been falling this season. Fist-yea head coach Russ Safaty's squad has had geate success than last yea's 2-20 team, but the Lady Bulldog's fist yea in the NSC has been a disappointment. One playe who has not been a disappointment fo the Lady Bulldogs, though, is cente Sue Mois. The 5 1 senio is anked nea the top of the confeence in many statistical categoies, including scoing, as she leads the Lady Bulldogs with an 18.1 points-pe-game aveage, and a 7.1 ebounds-pegame standad. "Most of thei offensive stoy is Sue Mois," says DiStanislao. "She is thei tallest state at 5-1. She is vey stong, and she has a vey good touch at the peimete. She was eally able to hun us in ou last game. "n fact," DiStanislao continues, "she was the only one to scoe in double figues." n that game, which was played Jan. 30 in ndianapolis, Butle managed to stay even with the ish fo much of the fist half mostly though the effots of Mois, who ended up with 22 points on the evening. Note Dame, howeve, was able to un off the last 1 1 points of the half to stake a halftime lead, and, finally, to blow the game open in the second half, Anothe key element in that game, and in Butle's attack this season, has been feshman guad Melissa Kilgoe. The 5-8 floo captain is aveaging 9.5 ppg. fo he team, and is counted on by he teammates to set the offense in motion. "Melissa Kilgoe is thei floo leade," notes DiStanislao. "Aside fom Sue Mois, she's thei most efsee WOMEN, page 13 ND women play host to Butle The ish stat swimming thei 1985 season finale this aftenoon in Chicago as the team aces 12 Midwesten schools fo the title in the Founh Annual Midwest ndependent Championship Meet. "This is ou top meet of the season be~ause it will have ou toughest competition," explained Note Dame head coach Dennis Stak. "t's a lage meet with some moe established teams, so it will be toughe." Fo some senios, this weekend's guelling thee-day meet will be thei faewell to competitive swimming. Fo othe membes of the team, it is thei last chance to acheive thei fastest times of the yea and possibly qualify fu the NCAA DiVision National Championships. The playoff fomat calls fo the fou top egula-season finishes to compete n a doubleelimination tounament. Put simply, if you lose twice in the playoffs, you'e histoy. The fist game of the evening pitted top-ated Been-Phillips against founh-ated Walsh. B-P finished the egula season with a pefect 10 0 ecod. Walsh came n at 8-2. Walsh was the clea aggesso at the outset of the game. Walsh jumped out to a 12-5 fist-quane lead, patiently woking the ball inside against B-P's man-to-man defense and then pounding the offensive boads. Laua Gleason did most of the dama~e. B-P, on the othe hand, seemed to be in a fog. On defen~. B-P was sluggish at best. On offense, they wee stymied by Walsh's 3-2 zone, which foced thei guads beyond nomal shooting ange. B-P fied up seveal 20-foot bicks, anyway. The second quate saw B-P gain gound with the help of a 2 3 zone. Walsh lacked good ballhandles and couldn't find any pockets in B-P's defense. Howeve, B-P emained cold fom the peimete and the half ended with Walsh leading, Walsh's May Lange caught fie in the thid peiod. n celebation of he twenty-fist bithday, she sank fou stai lt baskets. B-P looked ipe fo an upset. Walsh seemed eady to do the honos. But it was not to be. B-P clamped down on defense with some fiece man-to-man pessue and Walsh's ballhandles cumbled unde it. Tunove afte tunove down the stetch led to easy layups; slowly, B-P clawed its way into stiking distance. With a minute left, Ann Cuoe picked off a pass and fed Lisa Bown fo the winning basket. t was also B-P's fist lead of the game. Two Cuoe foul shots iced a victoy. 8-P coach Fan O'Malley commented on his team's slow stat and fast finish.
