Thee suely is something in the natual ode of things that equies the passage of such knowledge fom big siste to kid bothe. On my fist days in high school, my mothe did not fea because my big siste was thee to help me. n the moning, would check my shit-pant combo with my fashion coodinato (who happened to live in the bedoom next doo) to make sue had not committed some fashion faux pas - such as a stiped shit with plaid pants - that would send the aveage ninth-gade male home at lunch to change. Mothes ae good at buying you fist suit and selecting new dapes fo you oom, but big sistes keep you on the staight and naow of teenage social existence. Oh, we little bothes petend not to listen to the advice and ae elieved when mothe asks at dinne to change the subject please. wonde sometimes how big sistes become pivy to such knowledge, and suspect it comes fom eading all those magazines full of advetisements only big sistes would want to ead anyway. Living with a big siste is like living with a esident Abigail Van Buen, except this one convinces you that she knows what she's talking about. One night afte dessing fo a dance to which was invited and to which eluctantly ageed, complained to Dea Siste that something had eed somewhee between my blue tie and bown jacket. The answe: "Neve look you best fo a gil you don't eally cae about." mmotal wods. A geat confidence booste fo a 17- yea-old with an ugly tie. ( wonde now, howeve, if the same advice is given by the big bothes of little sistes might ask out.) College oommates make poo big sistes. They shovel thei food in the dining hall and put postes of ock guitaists on thei walls. My big siste does neithe. "Shovelling" food is not accepted, she says. n polite company, such as eating dinne at the White House o with you gilfiend's paents, loweing you head to meet you fok thee inches above you head is an insult to the cook and a bad eflection on you upbinging. bing all this up because duing this yea of 1984 fa too much has been made of Big Bothe and scacely little of Big Siste. My siste left this summe fo Dallas, Bob Vondeheide Edito-in-Chief nside Tuesd amed with a new ca and a bachelo's degee. Thee she will join the anks of the young pofessionals and enjoy cocktails in cool bas afte wok. He boss is a woman as is he boss's boss. Gende, it is umoed, will not be a consideation fo advancement. can tell fom obseving my big siste that even though the Equal Rights Amendment is all but dead, women have found a place in the Ameican business hieachy. Many women have become successful doing jobs men have taditionally held - although men seem less comfotable doing jobs once peseved fo women. Cetainly discimination, howeve subtle, still exists, but now they tell me that the vice pesident of the United States could be a woman (if the economy cumbles o if bombs ae dopped on Russia in five minutes). She doesn't use he husband's suname - not even a hyphen. And the latest wod is that despite the unwaanted attack fom a boed media, Ms. Feao and M. Zaccao actually paid too much in taxes. t seems if anyone is doing the watching these days, both Big Bothe and Big Siste will shae the job. My big siste still calls me and asks about the little things in life. But moe and moe these days am getting used to the idea that she heself will someday help handle the bigge things in the wold. 3 The Obseve ----Tuesday, Aus 28,1984- page 3-l Ca cash kills Gace esident By MARC RAMREZ Assistant News Edito People eally miss someone who they've plannt d to spend a couple moe yeas with, and james Athu DiNado was no exception. DiNado, a 2 yea old Note Dame junio, was killed in an automobile accident on July 22. He was a esident of Gace Hall. "The suddenness and unexpectedness eally came as a shock to Jim's fiends," said Fathe David Noone, Gace Hall ecto. "He was well-liked by a lot of people." Noone added he was vey impessed with the faith and couage of DiNado's paents. "We eceived a lette fom his family," he said. "They've been vey appeciative of the love and concen shown by his fiends." James Athu DiNado A pe-med majo, DiNado lived in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. "He was the kind of student who got vey inteested and excited in theology," said St. Edwad's Hall Assistant Recto Fathe Geald Ladne, who taught DiNado in an ntoduction to Theology class. "Theology helped him, gave him pesonal meaning. "Jim was eal easy-going. He had a witty sense of humo. saw him often because he was a Red Coss woke. He was vey geneous with his time." A sevice is planned fo DiNado within the next few weeks. Quality is top pioity fo Hickey Special to The Obseve When Food Sevice Diecto William Hickey, J., told dining hall wokes in 1982 that "you'e hee to seve the students as customes," they wee at fist "bewildeed," accoding to the May 9 issue of Restauants and nstitutions magazine. Now two yeas afte Hickey came to campus, the vy Awad- consideed the most pestigious awad given in the food seve industy - ha come to Not(e Dame. The magazine aticle details the easons Note Dame was chosen the best food sevice at an institution. Much cedit goes to Hickey, accoding to the magazine which also sponsos the awad. "Hickey's style of speaking eflects his style of wok: high-enegy, non-stop and hadhitting," the aticle said. "s it a ton of tofu, a sea of spaghetti o a mountain ofmostaccioli? William Hickey,).,... doesn't cae as long as the food quality is tops (and) the pesentation is ceative." The vy Awad was pesented to Note Dame in Januay, but the featue stoy on ND's Food Sevices did not appea in the magazine until May. " am eally poud of it and so is my staff," Hickey said. "The pofession has ecognized that good things ae happening at Note Dame." The Food Sevices' most impessive poject, accoding to the magazine, was the cateed cocktail eception, a sit-down dinne and a bunch, seved fo 4,000 at the 1984 Junio Paents Weekend. One couse featued flaming baked Alaska fo desset. "When came hee two yeas ago, the students' peception offood sevice was absolutely hoendous," the magazine quotes Hickey as saying. "So fist of all, we had to develop cedibility with ou customes... Secondly, we had to impove the poductivity and the pide of the people who woked in Jood sevice. And thid, we had to build up the quality of food." Last sping, Hickey suffeed a Canada busy pepaing fo Pope's visit in Septembe As!loclated Pess TORONTO - With tinkets on sale giant cosses eected and shubbey cleaed fo tent cities nca the Actic Cicle, Canadians fom coast to coa.t d fa into the noth ae pepaing fo Pope john Paul 's exhaustive tou of this huge county next month. Afte coveing about 8, 500 miles, the pope will aive in Ottawa, the last of 13 cities on the tou, on a special glass-coveed boat gliding down a five-mile canal though the Gothicstyle govenment buildings of the capital. Moe than 11 million of Canada's 25 million people call themselves Roman Catholic, but no pope has eve visited this county, the wold's second-lagest. John Paul wiu land Sept. 9 in Quebec City, whee Catholic piests fist aived 449 yeas ago with exploe jacques Catie. 8 The Obseve Rules continued fom page 1 think the numbe would be changed although thee was always the "possiblity fo exceptions." The fist daft of the alcohol diectives also stated, "Liquo will not be allowed anywhee on campus except in licensed bas. Bee and wine only ae pemitted in the esidence halls... " But the new egulations do not ban liquo. Said Goldick, "Alcohol is alcohol is alcohol. The distinction has not been made in these egulations." Tyson explained, " think it was the pevious Student Affais people who made it bee and wine only. The pimay eason fo the change in policy is if the Univesity says that consumption in modeation is allowed then we allow the consumption of alcohol. don't want to have policies that ae meaningless, o not enfoced." Betino noted this was an issue that was decided in accodance with the views of the Campus Life Council. "Many of the ules wee alteed afte the CLC gave thei input. The CLC was vey effective in many aeas," he said. But the CLC couldn't save the bas. Bas in student's ooms have been eliminated with the implementation of the new policy. "Any stuctue which has by its appeaance the function of seving alcohol is pohibited. Examples of such ae stuctues with chais, stools, o alcoholic advetisments. Common sense must pevail n that a ba is eadily identifiable in ou cultue," says the policy. Goldick commented, " tust ou hall staff enough to sit down with students and discuss whethe a stuctue is a ba o not." He added, "The decision of the ecto will be final in all cases." Also gone the way of the dinasou ae dinking games. "Any type of dinking games, e.g. 'quates' o the use of any instument of alcohol abuse, e.g. 'bee bongs' is a violation of the pinciple of esponsible dinking and is stictly pohibited." Goldick assued that Student Affais had no intention of aiding dom ooms at the sound of tinkling quates, but noted that dinking games "can be vey dangeous biologically." Alcohol tanspoted on campus must now be in closed containes and in suitable packaging, e.g. a bag o box. But Tyson explained, "The intention of this policy is that it is inappopiate and against the policy to tanspot open liquo on the campus. But the containe it comes in is alight." The penalty fo having a keg of bee in a dom oom has been aised fom S 00 to $1 50 by the new policy. Tyson said this is moe to dete keg paties than anything else. "t's the sot of thing that a no paking ticket is moe of a deteent than a SS paking ticket," he elaboated. "The alcohol policy is a eality in all of ou lives. We can fight about it fo six months o we can go fowad and look at ways of socializing without alcohol," said Tyson. He added he sees the Student Affais office as playing the ole of "facilitatos and encouages" who will wok with the student body in finding altenatives to an alcoholcenteed social life fo the campus. Will the potests of last sping again shake the golden dome? "You can't tell what students ae going to do," said Betino. But he added, "n my opinion now, we eally haven't got a fight." " think we would be moe o less wasting ou time," he said. But Betino is optistic about how students will adjust to the new egulations. "Thee's a lot of new administatos. We'e going to see how eveything goes. The uppeclassmen may have to do moe adjusting than othes, and it might take a few yeas fo the issue to be fully settled, but you've got to be optimistic." The potests last sping wee not all fo nothing, accoding to Betino. "f that wouldn't have happened, ou voice wouldn't have been as stong as it was, he said." " would say we got a lot taken out of the policy - thee was a lot of compomising on both sides - and we both had to bend a lot. Right now we've got to make the best of what we've got." n Pasqueilla West, Resident Assistant Kathy Kemp echoed Betino's optimism. "t's up to us RAs to take a positive attitude towads the new egulations. Pehaps we'll take moe advantage of what South Bend has to offe," she said. Julianne Jones, anothe RAin PW, ageed with he. "The feeling got fom the administation was that they wee vey enthusiastic about planning a lot and offeing students altenatives," she said. Kemp said she wasn't expecting to see a epeat of the last sping's potests against the new policy. " think thee will be testing but as fa as potesting think it will cool down a little bit." On the othe side of campus, the feeling among RAs was simila. Mak Stoen, a RA in Dillon hall, said, "Attached to the alcohol policy was a list of altenatives. Of couse, people ae going to have to be ceative. think Note Dame students ae vey ceative. don't foesee a lot of poblems." Tuesday, August 28, page 8 Classes, vvhatclasses? 9 The Obseve Tuesday, August 28, page 9 Tyson continued fom page 1 good." He said he would have gone outside to find such people f he did not find suitable: people within the Univesity. n June, Tyson announced thee appointments to the office of student affais. John Goldick, fomely the Univesity admissions diecto, was named associate vice pesident fo esidence life. Siste Jean Lenz, fomely Faley Hall's ectess, was appointed assistant vice pesident fo student affais. And Fathe Fancis Cafaelli, fomely the diecto of student accounts, was named assistant vice pesident fo student sevices. These thee eplaced James Roeme, dean of students; Fathe Michael Heppen, diecto of housing; and Fathe Gegoy Geen, vice pesident fo student affais, in the senio positions in the office. Fathe William Beauchamp, executive assistant to the pesident and executive vice pesident, said he did not think that Roeme, Heppen o Geen had been offeed positions in Tyson's estuctued student affais office. Tyson suppoted this by saying that his thee fist choices accepted the positions. Although Roeme, Heppen and Geen wee eplaced in the student affais office,.tyson and the thee new assistant vice pesidents insisted that they wee not "dismissed." When asked about the administative shake-up in the student affais office, Goldick said he did not think "shake-up" was the appopiate wod. Tyson explained that the administatos wee not dismissed because all thee ae still employed by the Univesity. Roeme has been appointed diecto of community elations and special pogams. Heppen has assumed Caffaelli's post as diecto of student accounts. Geen has been named diecto of pastoal sevices and associate ecto of Saced Heat. When Tyson announced his appointments n June the South Bend Tibune hinted n a news aticle that the shake-up was tiggeed by the new alcohol policy and the student esponse to the policy. "The changes also follow a tumulous few months on campus as the univesity administatos unveiled a new alcohol policy... The elease of the new ules and poposed diectives fom Roeme pompted. a student potest," the aticle stated. Joni Neal, diecto of student activities, said in July that she had head talk that Roeme's dismissal was linked to his poposed alcohol diectives but that she had not head t fom Tyson. Seveal weeks late Neal said that the alcohol diectives had nothing to do with any of the dismissals. Tyson maintains he "did the stuctue fist," and then looked to fill the offices. Cafaelli said he thought it was Van Wolvlea's esignation that spued the changes. "The situation pesented itself to cay out a new vision." Tyson's appointment and estuctuing of the office aoused vaied esponses fom faculty and administatos. Although some faculty membes efused to comment because of a lack of infomation about the situation, a few expessed disappoval. "Senseless," is how Pei Anold, associate pofesso of govenment and intenational studies, descibed the changes. "The dean of students looked to be doing a good job. This univesity is not a place that is vey open. t is a place of some sececy and hieachy. (The estuctuing) is a mystey to me." Pofesso Thomas Swatz of the economics depatment said, " don't think they could possibly find a peson who could do a bette job than Jim Roeme. 'm disappointed." Swatz descibed Roeme as a "man matched with his job." Offeing his paise of Tyson's appointment, Geen noted, "n my mind, Fathe Tyson is the eplacement. That's what he was tained fo." He explained that Tyson was the man he 'had been bucking fo fo yeas." Geen also suppoted Tyson's changes. He said that when a- new peson takes ove an office, binging n a new team is standad pocedue. Neal was also eceptive of Tyson and his new staff, " get a eal feel of SObeing Advice } can save a life;,:cv) Think Befoe You Dink /"" Befoe YOU Dive. :.- excitement fom that staff... " She backed up Geen's explanation saying, "Tyson wanted a staff he could wok with." She said the changes in pesonnel had to do with eoganization and a staff that was compatible with Tyson's philosophy. Although he was at the cente of much of the discussion of the estuctuing, Reme defeed comment to a late date. He is now on a thee month sabbatical and will not stat his new job until O.ct. 1. Heppen efused to comment. Coinciding with Van Wolvlea's esignation was the esigna.tion of Jim McDonnell, diecto of student activities. Howeve, the South Bend Tibune epoted that McDonnell had been "dismissed." Accoding to McDonnell, he submitted his esignation to Van Wolvlea on May 3, 1984 effective June Duing that time he would seach fo a new position while continuing to fulfill his duties as diecto of student activities. He said this delayed esignation would also allow the Univesity time to find a eplacement. McDonnell said Van Wolvlea accepted his esignation. McDonnell said that a few weeks late he was asked to move up his esignation and offeed up to six months seveence pay. " was told on Tuesday, May 29, that thee was going to be a new vice pesident and Coby's (Fomely Nancy's Windy City) continuedjompage 1 day it emains closed, the likelihood (of the ba neve eopening) gows stonge." Although no one has been chaged with the slaying of the ba owne, "Anyone we ae dealing with in espect to this investigation has to be a suspect," said Mabank. Rowley, 53, was shot and killed as he enteed his Twyckenham Hills home, 2609 Yok Road, shotly befoe 12:30 a.m. Aug. 1. Police ae keeping a tight lid on infomation concening the investigation. Mabank did say that detemining the exact times 9f the events of that evening "is quite impotant to the investigation." Accoding to epots afte Rowley's death, Rowley had gone to dinne that evening with James Eichost, an employee of Coby's, and anothe businessman fom the Five Points aea whose identity has not been eleased. "He (Tyson) asked the old vice pesident to let me know would not be on that team," said McDonnell. Tyson said, "D. McDonnell might think that," but explained that Van Wolvlea handled McDonnell's depatue. Van Wolvlea could not be eached fo comment. Accoding to Neal, fomely McDonnell's assistant and late his eplacement as appointed by Tyson, McDonnell had announced his esignation on a Tuesday, and he was told to vacate his office by the end of the month, which tuned out to be that Thusday. McDonnell said he assumed if he had not esigned he would have been fied. Neal said that maybe McDonnell would have been "asked to esign o eevaluate his ole with the students." McDonnell explained that he esigned because of a disageement he had with Tyson on the issue of the student cente. The fome diecto of student activities said, "This was the only time let someone know was upset," in his five yeas in the office. McDonnell said he felt he had been "the solitay voice" on the issue of a student cente. Then, two o thee yeas ago, accoding to McDonnell he ovesaw a lage study of student centes. Rowley came home shotly afte midnight, appaently concened when Eichost had failed to meet him at the ba. Police believe Rowley was ambushed as he enteed the house. He was shot once in the chest and twice in the back of the head. The St. Joseph County Coone's office indicated that the official cause of death was sevee intenal bleeding. Tyson confimed that McDonnell had not been invited to that meeting. He said t was a meeting of the achitects and the offices of the Univesity because any enovation plans needed the appoval of the offices. McDonnell said that Van Wolvlea told him Tyson was upset with him. McDonnell said that fo this eason he made an appointment to see Tyson. He said that Tyson cancelled that appointment but that he would eschedule it. He neve did, accoding to McDonnell. When asked about this cancelled appointment, Tyson said that it might be tue. n June, McDonnell called Tyson's office to eschedule thei meeting, not to ask fo his old job, McDonnell said, but "to bing about pesonal econciliation. just wanted to talk with the peson and settle it pesonally." 11 Showcase Tuesday, W August 27, page 13 The Feshmen's Compehensive Guide to the Campus by Mac Ramiez featues staff wite elcome to Note Dame. Sec the beautiful, distinguished buildings. lbese ae old buildings. '!bey wee designed and built by people who didn't have the skills allowed by today's moden technology. See the othe, geneic buildings. 1bcsc ac new buildings. At n't they petty? Sec the building with the big gold helmet. This is the Dome. You neve know what's happt ning unde the Dome, but it is usually vey impotant. Big Bad Rules come out fom unde the Dome, and sometimes people get fied fom thei jobs. The Dome is a vey scay place. St e the tall building with the pictue on the font of it. lbis is the Memoial Libay. Who is it in memoy of? No one knows. 'Jbce ae lots and lots of books n this building. f you ae smat you will be spend ing lots and lots oftime hee in the next few yeas. Maybe, even if you ae not smat you will be spending lots and lots of time hee in the next few yeas. See the magnificent building sitting on the South Quad. Don't let it fool you. lbis is the South Dining Hall. Many of you will come in hee to eat. Many of you wlll just come in. By the time you ac a senio you may not come in at all. But you will always emembe it. tbe food sevice has won awads fo its ceative ideas. Did you eve taste a ceative idea? Sec the helpful senios guiding you into you oom. 'bese ae you esident assis tants. You can call them RAs to be chummy. They will he you fiends thoughout the yea, and help you with you homewok and so on. Somt times they will even do favos fo you. But don't get you hopes up too high. ndiana is a "21" state. Sec you oom n one of the many do mitoics. You will live hee fo a whole yea. Not a. big as you oom back home, is it? No longe can you look out into the back yad and sec little Spotty folicking about. Howeve. with a littk ingenuity you can make you oom a plca.ant place to live. But don't paint it in wild colos. You will have to pay vt y lage amounts of money. And don't abuse you telt phone. You phone s Univesity-owned, state-of-the-at equip mt nt. And most impotant, don't build you elevated bed too high. You might fall off having a bad deam about the Dome. See the Univesity sidewalks leading this way and that. Whee do they go? They go this way and that. See all the nice people playing Fisbee and tossing footballs on the lawns. How neat, you paents say. But when Mum and Dad go home, eveyone has to get off the gass. The gass is petty. You might uin it. No shot cuts though the gass, says Note Dame. s this what the sidewalks ae fo? No, the sidewalks ae fo going this way and that. Sec the funny thee-stoy building in the middle of the campus. This is the Lafotune Student Cente. Not funny, you say? Fo many yeas thee has been talk of enovating Lafotune and adding conveniences such as a babe shop, a patio teace fo outdoo dining, and so on in ode to make it just as good as othe student centes. Once again many of these changes wee slated to take place this summe. Lafotune has changed, all ight. They had it painted. Now isn't that funny? See the cute little squiels playing on the gass. Play, play, play. Aen't they adoable? See them chase each othe aound the tees. Chase, chase, chase. Don't you just want to pick them up and cuddle them? No, you want to pick them up and stangle them. Why? Because they get to play on the gass and you don't. You might tea up the gass. Squiels will only leave thei doppings on it. See the old stadium sitting all alone in the paking lot. This is whee the Note Dame football team plays. Famous men like Knute Rockne and Geoge Gipp once played hee. See the paking lot, whee student tailgates See the good boys. Not allowed to plav on the gass, they play above it. But not anymoe. This is one of those Big Bad Rules that came out fom unde the Dome. So only those olde and moe matue can dink and act like childen while students must act all gown up and not dink. Ae you confused too? See the foeign men out woking on the lawns. Wok, wok, wok. Aen't they fiendly? n the winte they will ty to kill you. They will jump into funny tucks with big food tays on the font and zoom down the sidewalks without a cae in the wold. Then it will be okay to walk on the gass, because it will be all coveed with snow. Duing the yea these men will keep you on you toes by cutting the gass outside you window at eight in the moning. But it is all in fun. Remembe, they wok fo the Unive sity. See all the uppeclassmen waiting in line at egistation. Wait, wait, wait. lbey have been waiting a long time. See all the uppeclas smen in line at couse depatments on campus. They will wait hee even longe. You will have to do this too next yea. You will not enjoy it. See the sun shining ove the campus all day long. Shine, shine, shine. Don't become too chummy with M. Sun, though, because he is going to go away soon and he will not come back fo a long time. M. Sun is not stupid. He goes fa away when ain and snow come to town. When will he be back? Can you say "Apil?" See the othe feshmen at the feshmen mixe. They ae lost too. ' 'f: m. - Flags, God and Geoge Washington Ronald Reagan tackled the eligious issue at an ecumenical beakfast on the last day of the convention. He was making patisan hay simply by aising the matte hee. And he pedictably left it in a muddle. Reagan contasted Ameica with Fance, which in 1789 "eected a govenment that Gay Wills Outide was intended to be puely secula," as if that wee some heinous nnovation. t was an innovation, all ight, but it was ous. We did it in 1788, when the Constitution was atified. Many of those who debated the atification, state by state, objected to the lack of a eligious test fo holding office, and to the lack of pescibed eligious sevices. That had neve happened befoe in histoy. t is one of ou poudest achievements as a nation. t is absud of the pesident to foist it on othes as a disgace. Reagan points out that Thomas Jeffeson efeed to God in the Declaation oflndependence, to "the laws of natue and of natue's God." So did the Fench deists fom whom Reagan deives a eign of blood. No one hdkved moe in divine povidence than Robespiee. Fance did not get id of all eligious pactices and language in 1789, any moe than we had in the peceeding yea. The Fench wee moe feocious against Catholics because Catholicism had been the established chuch befoe the Fench Revolution. 'he Ameican foundes wee anti-catholic, too, and feocious against the establishment of that eligion in Canada - which is cited as one of the causes of the Revolution in the vey The Obseve-.- P.O. Box Q, Note Dame, N Declaation of ndependence Pesident Reagan efe.ed. The pesident offes us the tied examples of things meant to dispove that ou ealy foundes wanted to "get id of eligion" (as if that wee eve an issue). Thee wee militay chaplains, though Madison opposed this, and Washington did not want any appointed at the fedeal level. Washington, fo that matte, neve once used the name of Jesus. The passage about the uses of eligious belief that Reagan quotes in the Faewell Addess put that belief on a pa, fo utility, with maintaining the nation's economic cedit. Washington actually toned down the efeence to eligion penned fo him on that occasion by Alexande Hamilton. This does not mean that these men wee opposed to eligion, though that is the way the pesident intepets the actions of thei descendants today. t does mean that ealy Ameicans wee quite seious about ceating a secula state, without being opposed to a eligious society. The so called consevatives ae nomally adamant on sepaating "the govenment" fom the est of life, especially business. You would think thei minds could stetch this distinction to cove the case supplied by the Constitution. But guess that is the eal explanation of the poblem. Fo most of the people hee, eligion is something like the flag, to be waved on all occasions, by as many people as possible, as an instument of intimidation and division ("We wee waving the flag when othes wee buning it"). But these people eally do believe in the sepaation of state fom eligion. You find that out the minute the govenment ties to egulate any business activity. Hands off ou eligion, thei actions say. But beyond hetoic thee is a Geat Divide between them. As the tumult of the conven- Max Lene The Lene column tions dies and the captains and kings depat the tue compaign battle lines emege. Some questions ae in ode. How much of a Geat Divide is it in actuality, not just among the delegates but the people? What is the tue natue of the diffeences, in the pesonalities and chaacte of the paty leades, in pioities, symbols, ideas, philosophies, psychologies, theologies, wold views? My own answe is that the Divide is geate than most obseves thought a yea ago. t has been in the making since 1964 when Bay Goldwate, esuected at Dallas, "extemism" and all, made his clumsy and pematue sotie into deep consevatism; the yea also when Ronald Reagan made "the Speech" which catapulted him into his caee as "citizen-politician." add a second poposition, that the changes have not necessaily been contained within the two Paties, which have become fail ves sels at best unde the impact of the infomation evolutions. Thee ae fa moe consevatives and independents among Democats than San Fancisco showed. Let's call this the "consevative ingedient" of the long-ange tend. That was exactly why most of Reagan's caefully planned acceptance speech at Dallas was delibeately low key until the last 1 S minutes o so, with all the faithful waiting patiently fo thei pophet to Editoial Boad bust into flame, like the Buning Bush. He did of couse finally, to the delight of the esponsive delegates. But while the bulk of his speech was conse vative it was aimed at the consevative in gedient outside the Hall. The gowth of that element, often mixed with modeate and libeal elements, is what has been happening in the last 20 yeas. Along with technological change it accounts fo Richad Nixon's "silent majoity" and Jey Falwell's "moal majoity," and fo the tansfomation of the Democatic South and Southwest into a func tionally voting Republican Sunbelt. All the Republican factions want to lue the potential non-republican Reagan suppotes into the Paty. But they split oughly along two majo stategies. One is to "boaden the base" and get the moe modeate independents into the Paty. Given his anti-abotion and anti-era and school paye stands, these votes ae likely to find Reagan too consevative and too much the pisone of the New Right. The othe stategy is to deepen the consevatism of the Paty by giving it a God-familycaee-county dimension that will attact the votes who espond to such symbols: the fundamentalist, the nationalist, those seeking a stong and confident "leade," those oiented towad business and technology, and espe dally the young, just out of school, stating thei lives, looking fo caees in an upwad mobile, expanding, "oppotunity economy." Reagan could of couse be spoiled by success, take too high isks of aousing the feas always thee just below the suface, feas of wa and eligious intoleance, and the beaking of the wall of sepaation between chuch and state. He could lose. Right now the odds ae against his losing. Not because of the polls, which ae always volatile, but because of the long and slow undetow towad the Right. n Samuel Lubell's phase, copping up again, the votes may be binging a "new sun and new moon" nto inte-paty politics. The intense pactice schedule left many of the playes' legs and bodies weay, and a lack of aggessiveness and many mistakes is what esulted. "The team is tied - we've been woking fo a week, going double the touchdown. Jeffeson povided a good look to the coaches, finishing the day with 14 ushes fo 78 yads and caught two passes fo 48 yads, but had to leave pactice afte knocking himself out on a block fo fullback Chis Smith. Beuelein also engineeed a second dive of 65 yads, dumping a pass to Jeffeson fo a 41-yad gain and topping it off with a nine-yad touchdown pass to Milt Jackson. The mistakes began to become moe pevalent as the pactice woe on, with the offensive unit suffeing the wath of offensive coodinato sessions," Coach Gey Faust noted, Ron Hudson's whistle when doing afte oveseeing a 10-minute un- gass dills punishment fo pocening peiod. Allen Pinkett, Mak Bavao, Joe Howad and Tom Doege wee among the notable playes who did not play due to slight injuies. All of them ae expected to be pacticing this week. Steve Beuelein was one of the few individual stas of the scimmage, completing nine of eleven passes fo 218 yads. Beuelein wasted no time getting stated, capping a six-play, 93-yad dive with a 21-yad scoing stike to tight end Ricky Gay. Alonzo Jeffeson, Pinkett's eplacement at tailback, contibuted uns of 17 and 21 yads en oute to ish spots have active summe Note Dame students may have been on beak this summe, but many Note Dame athletes and the athletit depatment wee keeping busy: Thee wee seveal coaching changes and additions, as well as a good amount of football news. The following is a bief update: t is not official yet, but Rich Hunte appaently has esigned as socce coach. The details of his esignation ae not yet known, but will be made available as soon as possible. t appeas the new socce coach will be Dennis Gace, who was hied as an assistant coach ove the summe. Gace is a fome ndiana socce sta, who most ecently seved as the head socce coach at Bloomsbug Univesity in Pennsylvania. He was the coach of the Midwest team in the 1980 National Spots Festival. He also has had coaching posts with Ti-State Univesity, ndiana State-Evansville, and Clemson. He will have a tough job succeeding Hunte who compiled a ecod ove the past seven yeas without much scholaship help. Thee is a new field hockey coach also. Fome Olympian Jill Lindenfeld was named this summe to lead the ish women. Undenfeld, who has been teaching in the Beien County (Mich.) school disticts fo the past five yeas, succeeds Jan Galen Bishop who left afte last season. A 1975 gaduate of West Cheste ( Pa.) State College, Undenfeld seved two yeas as head field hockey coach at Cal Poly-Pomona. Thee new assistant coaches wee named ove the summe also. Geg Buce has joined women's basketball coach May DiStanislao's staff as an assistant. He eplaces fome assistant Jill Jeffey who esigned to become head coach at Montclai State (N.j.). And Ted Potts, fome tack coach at Niles High School, has been added to ish tack coach Joe Piane's staff. College football has been a vey newswothy topic this sumd\e as the Supeme Cout uled that the NCAA's contol of all collegiate television ights was unconstitutional. The uling has caused a geat amount of confusion, if not chaos, as Division 1-A colleges have boken up into two majo goups - the Collegiate Football Association ( CFA) and a coalition of Big Ten and Pacific Ten confeences. Each goup has been making its own deals. Thee will be moe on this situation late this week in The Obseve. The pe-season polls ae now out and Gey Faust's ish ae picked to finish quite high in most of them. n fact, two publications have picked the ish to finish No. at the end of the season. GamePlan and Gay Austin's College Football have tabbed Note Dame as the team to beat. Othe high ankings include nside Spots (No. 5), Steet & Smith (No. 6 ), and Spot (No. 6 ). A composite poll of all the pe-season picks will appea in Fiday's pape. ndividual Note Dame playes have also been honoed by being named to vaious pe-season all Ameica lists. A numbe of 1984 Note Dame gaduates attempted to join National Football League teams this summe and, with the season just aound the cone, appea to have been faily successful. Blai Kiel, who was picked up in the th ound by the Tampa Bay Buccanees, not only appeas to have a good chance of making the Bucs as a punte and quateback, but has been impessive enough to put pessue on the vetean quatebacks. Running back Geg Bell who was picked in the fist ound by the Buffalo Bills went though a contactual dispute with the Bills befoe finally signing ecently. He has not been ovely impessive yet, but the layoff pobably has had something to do with that. Chis Bown has been a pleasant supise as defensive back fo the Pittsbugh Steeles. Bown had two inteceptions in a pe-season game against Dallas on pime-time television. Bown's patne in the seconday last yea, Stacey Toan, did not have much luck making the squad of the defending wold champion Oakland Raides, but, as of last week, was getting a look fom some othe clubs in need of seconday help. Most of the bad news fo ish playes came fom the Dallas Cowboys who cut ninth-ound pick Nell Maune and (ee agents Kevin Smith and Mike Johnston.
