Things wee elatively quiet Univesity commissions fim to eview campus jobs By MEGAN McGRATH News Wite In an effot to impove woking conditions fo Note Dame's suppot staff, the Depatment of Human Hesouces has commissioned a consulting fim to evaluate job desciptions and possibly estuctue the classification pocess. The Depatment announced thei plans to univesity employees this week. At a Gende Studills foum Thusday, Sept. 21, pofessos Jean Pote and Teesa Ghiladucci discussed seveal of the poblems facing suppot staff at the Univesity. In addition to the elatively low pay, which stats below that of most othe jobs on campus, a main issue discussed was the way in which secetaies ae categoized. "The Univesity is not satisfied with the classification system," said Hoge Mullins, Diecto of Human Hesouces. "Fo that eason we have commissioned a study of the system to take place in the next six to nine months." Accoding to Human Resouces, the consulting fim of Towes Peia has been bought in to evaluate the classification of Univesity suppot staff. Mullins also anticipates using extensive staff input. "We ae planning to put togethe staff committees so we can get thei assessment and involvement in the pocess." Mullins said. At the foum, seveal secetaies and depatment chais expessed fustation with the cuent system. Unde the system, secetaies ae placed into one of five categoies. Fuentes evaluates U.S., Latin Ameican elations By KARA PAVLIK News Wite Calos Fuentes, an intenationally acclaimed autho, now finds himself assuming the ole of a political figue in the quest fo peace in Latin Ameica. Kicking oft Saint May's week long celebation of multicultualism, Fuentes gave a speech in O'Laughlin Auditoium Satuday night entitled "U.S. and Latin Ameica: A Shaed Continent." Fuentes' thee fold speech dealt with the histoy between Latin Ameica and the United States, the egions' cultual diffeences and similaities, and post cold wa policies egading economic, political and social change. "The histoy of elations has been a vast asymmety of powe," Fuentes said. Taditionally the United States has been peceived as stong, wheeas Latin Ameica was looked at as weak. But Latin Ameica wants to be on equal tems with the United States. "Latin Ameica was aely seen in the Cold Wa yeas," said Fuentes. "Now that the Cold Wa has debased, cultual divesities need to be fogotten, poblems ceated by histoy need to be fogotten." Key among establishing bette elations between the egions accoding to Fuentes: people need to ealize that Latin Ameica and the United States shae a long and ich cultual backgound. Both have a common cultue consisting of Native Ameican histoy. at, liteatue, eligion, and self-govenment. But in the establishment of this common cultue, impotant goups wee left out. And minoity goups, such as women, have been limited tin the United States' Anglo-Saxon histoy: "The United States is not tuly moden if it it does not include what was thee at the ceation. It's a tagic iony that histoy and happiness aely coincide," says Fuentes. In effect, with the Cold Wa ove, Latin Ameica and the United Sates ae beginning to "shed the buden of histoy" and ceate an inclusive athe than an exclusive society. An openness to mutual ichness will lead society. politics and the economy in a diection towad which the wold can be see FUENTES I page 6

Ohio may be "the heat of it all," but you cetainly couldn't decibe the.police detail patolling Columbus' High Steet ealy Satuday moning Kista Nanney Accent Edito as "all heat." Duing the pe-game evely, the offices enteed many of the bas lining the popula, college-cowd steet, dopped peppe spay and an. They then poceeded to ignoe many of the choking, coughing students left in thei wake. The mass of confused ND/OSU fans wee heded like cattle fom one come to the next as the police continued to peppe spay them. Then they sent in the iot police, dessed head to toe in black, billy clubs in hand. Up till now, the closest I've eve gotten to iot police is CNN and Tiananmen Squae. So, if what I witnessed on High Steet was a iot, I've been leading a secetly wild life all these yeas and haven't even ealized it. Wait till mom heas this. Ganted, I missed the ba bawls and gabage dumpste buning this weekend. I neve saw the people thowing bottles and ocks at police cuises. I wasn't accosted o cused at. I neve felt like I was in seious dange. Maybe I'm blind and deaf. But on Fiday night, when they gassed the bas in the aea of Mean M. Mustad's, I don't think I'm too wong when I say a little advance "'aning was called fo. I'm assuming this was fo ou own good. They wee pobably potecting us. (Fom ouselves, pehaps?) But if you'e going to do us that kind of favo, clue us in. By 1:30 a.m., the steet was one big coughing, confused mess. A lot of people could have been seiously injued, if not stunned tempoaily. Not only fom the gas, but fom the esulting chaos and geneal sense of panic. I watched as students asked one office fo an ambulance; a gil was having difficulty beathing-difficulty way beyond that caused by iot squad gas. He was quick to infom the students that he had been "in the van" and had little to do with the events of the evening. Then, without even seeing the gil, he added that an ambulance was unnecessay ("Just fan he"). Gee, thanks. We can complain about S.U.D.S all we want. But none of us can eve say that we've been gassed in o aound the popeties of Note Dame and Saint May's by ou own police foce. ND Secuity might get on ou neves evey once and a while, but when it comes down to it, they'e hee to help usnot hut us. Afte seeing what went on in Columbus this weekend, I have to say that ND Secuity has ou best inteests at heat. The Linebacke may get packed evey so often, but you neve see the place suounded by men and women in iot gea. You neve see a cop evey ninety feet o gangs of ovezealous feshman setting dumpstes on fie. We can walk back and foth fom Tutle Ceek and College Pak without watching ou backs. To put it simply, we can feel safe hee, comfoted by the knowledge that we ae suounded by esponsible people. And safe is a good feeling to have. I can only hope that Note Dame stays as safe foeve. The views expessed in the Inside Column ae those of the autho and not necessaily those of The Obseve. As a Stanfod gaduate with futhe education fom the Univesity of Wisconsin, Jameson joined the Saint May's faculty in Without a textbook, she taught the couse, "The Psychology of Women." At this point, she ealized that little eseach focused on women's psychology. Afte futhe eseach and planning by Jameson, she submitted a Lily Gant entitled, "Women fo the Yea 2000." Thoughout his column, he alludes to feedom, individualism, and pesonal wealth as the pope tenets of the Ameican govenment (embodied by the Republicans), inevitably paving the way towads the Ameican Deam. I would submit that these isolated ideals ae, in fact, inadequate to facilitate the deams of all Ameicans. Feedom should indeed be the stating point, yet the accumu I.ation o( pesonal wealth and success must not be its only deivative. Feedom ultimately bestows esponsibility. Theefoe, as aguably the most poweful and wealthy nation on eath, we, as Ameicans, must shoulde the geatest esponsibility. The only esponsibility which Lenados and the cuent cop of Republicans peceive is explicit self-pomotion. In Lenados' myopic mind, selfpomotion leading to wealth and success is the extent of his duty as a citizen in a capitalistic nation. He feels he deseves a $30,000+ a yea job if he can obtain one. It is his ight, it is just, and it is nomal (hence his ejection of the specific categoy, "ich"). Pehaps Lenadoss ought to e-evaluate what exactly constitutes "ight" and "nomal" in ou contempoay society and wold. Is it ight that 35,000 childen die pe day due to famine and sickness? Is it nomal that thee ae thee times as many sheltes fo animals as thee ae fo batteed women? With less than thee minutes emainil}g in an aleady disastous thid quate, Ohio State wide out Ricky Glenn caught a twenty yad cul fom Bob Hoying. Cove man Allen Rossum had slipped The Ubse.~e/Bent Tadsen With the Iish tunoves, the defensivebacks got a wok out in the second half. Iish continued fom page 1 was in favo of the Iish. But a Bent Batholomew punt sailed a bit on Emmett Mosley, who muffed it. Ohio State back-up cente Dean Kueze was thee to jump on the loose ball. "Somehow I misjudged it," Mosley said. "When I went to catch it, I felt my man ight thee, and I figued it would hit him if I didn't catch it. But it tuned out it was one of thei men nea me." Holtz tied to ague fo an intefeence call, but to no avail. "It looked like he was intefeed with, but that was a big play," Iish head coach Lou Holtz said. "Because instead of us having the ball with a lead, they had 'it a:t ou 19-yad 'line." The Buckeyes scoed thee plays late. Quateback Bobby Hoying hit tight end Rickey Dudley ove the middle, and Dudley caied Iish tackles into the end zone. A Josh Jackson exta point gave the Buckeyes the lead fo good at Note Dame answeed with a 56-yad bomb fom Powlus to Deick Mayes. But the two had thei signals cossed late in the dive, with disastous consequences. Ohio State's Shawn Spings made a diving inteception of a Powlus fade pass to ease a scoing chance. "We had a busted patten," Holtz said. "Instead of having a chance to take the lead with a field goal, the kid makes a geat play to intecept the pass." The Buckeyes stuck quick once again, but this time with a little moe flai. A simple Hoying pass to Tey Glenn on a cul oute tuned into an 82-yad touchdown. The eceive beat Iish coneback Allen Rossum on the play, and then left the nationally-anked spinte in the dust in the ace to the end zone. The completion helped to pad Hoying's stats a bit, but the Buckeye quateback still had a vey effective day. He completed 14-of-22 passes fo 272 yads and fou touchdowns. to the gound in his effot to keep tack off the dangeous Glenn. That was poblem numbe one. Rossum has continuously had poblem maintaining his feet when the ball is in the ai. Quite fequently, he has been in position to make a play only to lose his balance and allow the catch to be made. In ealie games, Rossum has been able to ecove enough to make the tackle, peventing the vey big gain. That wasn't the case though on the play in question. This was numbe two. Any time Rossum heas the wod footace, his eyes should light up. He is aleady an All-Ameican spinte in indoo tack and vey well may be the fastest man on the Iish oste. So with 40 yads in which to un down Glenn, smat money was on the Iish keeping him out of the endzone. Mysteiously, the moe-than-fleet-footed Rossum was flat-out out-un by Glenn who cuised into the endzone with little moe than a despeate dive by Rossum in attempt to bing him down. "You don't want to get into a footace "The whole community got involved with this game so much," he said. "We'e so happy to win it fo us, the community, and the Ohio State fans. It's something we can look back on and say we beat Note Dame." Powlus was just 13-of-26 fo 243 yads and the one fateful pick fo the Iish. To make mattes wose, he fumbled a Rick Kaczenski snap on the following seies. Matt Bonhaus ecoveed to give the Buckeyes the ball at the Iish 15. Thee Eddie Geoge uns late, and Ohio State held a lead. Geoge finished with 207 yads on 32 caies and a pai of touchdowns. His 61-yad jaunt in the fouth quate was the demoalizing facto in the game. "The big uns wee disastous," Holtz said. The play was not only shocking, it was cucial to the flow of the game. "That play eally spaked us," Hoying said. All day long, the big gaines did in the Iish. 'The big passes and big uns wee disastous," Holtz said. If it wasn't Hoying picking the Note Dame seconday apat, it was Eddie Geoge spinting though the defense. The Iish defendes know that needs Note Dame stated out with pictue pefect execution, jumping out to a 10-0 lead. A Kopka field goal at the stat of the second quate was followed shotly by a Randy Kinde thee-yad plunge befoe Ohio State could even blink. Pobably the key scoe of the game came with unde a minute left in the fist half, when Hoying hit Demetius Stanley in the cone of the end zone with a 17 -yad pass. Stanley made a teto stop. "We need to hang in thee as a defense and emain focused," Iish linebacke Lyon Cobbins said. "We can't have big plays like they had because it just lets the cowd get into it.," Note Dame nose guad Paul Gasmanis said. "The big plays hee and thee ae fustating." "We hold them fo a few downs and then, bam, a big play. That just huts a defense." And it kills any chance fo the Iish to win the close contests that have become egula. ifle adjustment on the play by tuning completely aound to both fake out Shawn Wooden and get to the pass. The scoe naowed Note Dame's lead to just thee at halftime. "The touchdown just befoe the half was big fo them, I'm sue." Note Dame kept up with Ohio State's pinpoint execution with play-calling that kept the Buckeye defense off-balance thoughout the fist half, but it got a bit stale on the opening dive of the thid quate. With a fist down at the Buckeyes' ten, Holtz elected to give to Edwads thee staight times. He got down to the two, but no fathe. Note Dame had to settle fo a field goal instead of etaking a tenpoint advantage. "Cedit thei defense," Edwads said. "They held when they needed to."

The Iish seem to think that because they ae ND, they have some God-given ight to a victoy. The team has all too often taken the outlook that no game is bigge than any othe. The fact that evey time the Iish take the field, the opponent looks at it as thei game of the yea has seemingly tuned into an excuse. Thee is no doubt that Note Dame bings out the best in eveybody, but the question is why can't the Iish match that level of intensity. All week long peceding the showdown in Columbus moe than a few membes of the Iish down played the tilt as just anothe game. No big deal they said, we'e used to it. This outlook is whee the poblem lies. This wasn't just anothe game and the Iish ween't eady fo it. The hype suounding this game was moe than hype. It was eal. It was tangible. It was electic. It was also unmatched. The enthusiasm of the Buckeye fans was ovewhelming, egadless of how many fannies wee packed into the Hoseshoe. The emotion of the team was just as high. John Coope actually was successful in something. He convinced his team that this was big. It was huge - fo the team, the fans, the state. And they played like it. And why shouldn't they have looked at it as thei game of the yea. Two of college football stongest taditional powehouses going at it fo the fist time in almost sixty yeas. Foget the past even. It had enomous amification fo the pesent. The Buckeyes ae moe than legitimate Big Ten contendes and maybe even national title hopefuls, while the Iish had a chance to suddenly get ight back to whee they should be - the top ten. Although the Iish played well if you take away the tunoves, the talent level is clealy down. Hence, the emotional level needs to be up. But the Iish wee blinded to the impotance of this game by thei excessive self-esteem. It's high time fo Note Dame to ealize that evey game needs to be looked at as a big game and give eason again to poclaim that "We ae ND."

"I pactice against guys Jike Tey Glenn and Buste Tillman, and let's not foget Joey Galloway last yea," he said. "Mayes is petty good, but I've faced bette. "(Michigan's) Amani Toome, (Penn State's) Bobby Engam ae good eceives." So how did he justify getting beat by Mayes fo 56 yad? "You can't dwell on one play," he said. "The most impotant play is the next play." Thee plays late, Spings intecepted a Powlus pass to eliminate a scoing theat. '94 Repeat?: Questions as to how Note Dame will eact to the loss is anybody's guess. Visions of a nealosing season in 1994 is still fesh in playes' minds. "We have leades on this team, so we'll bounce back," nose guad Paul Gasmanis said. "We have to bounce back," Powlus said. "What else ae we going to do?" Clueless: David Fong, spots edito fo Ohio State's student pape, The Lanten, wote a column befoe the game about his ties to Note Dame. "My best fiend and I always deamed of going to Note Dame," he wote. "But then he had good gades, and I didn't. He was smat. I wasn't. "Moe to the, point, his family was loaded, mine wasn't." This guy eally needs to poofead his wok befoe he pints it. He could stat sounding like a fool.

15 ACCENT Monday, Octobe 2, 1995 page 11 JUST ANOTHER SINGLE DADDY (IT'S A MOVIE REVIEW) Who done it? Just 'The Usual Suspects' By SCOTT BOZIK Acc~nt Movi~ Citic **** S ynopsis: Buckle up, passenges, and pepae youselves fo a jouney whose destination is somewhee past deceit, a little befoe chaos, and ight next doo to intigue. "The Usual Suspects" is a movie built upon a plot that has moe twists than a Mishawaka expessway, and one whose esolutions ae just as mysteious and fustating. "The Usual Suspects" is anytying except "usual"; and to attempt to tuncate its naative fo the puposes of this column and its inheent synopsis would be a tavesty. Suffice it to say that "The Usual Suspects" is a aucous omp though the wold of cime that comes complete with blazing pistols and bazen wit. All I can do, even with my impessive capacities, is to advise my audience to witness this big-sceen phenomena and then ty to summaize it fo thei fiends. Pehaps only then will you undestand the quanday {and potential expositional quagmie) that I am now in. Daddy: Once again I find myself in the comfotable suoundings of the Accent pages. It is always so pleasant hee, nestled peacefully betwixt the incessant ecumenical pattling of the Viewpoint section and the excessive ambling of Iish Football ecap (a pat of the pape closely esembling, but not quite equivalent to, a legitimate spots section). I've always felt athe isolated hee, insulated fom distaction, and thus able to bing the Note Dame public the movie eviews they so ightly deseve. This week, though the powe of Technicolo, I bing "The Usual Suspects" befoe you and ty to examine an unothodox film in a medium accessible to all. Don't thank me, thank ou fine Ameican tadition of the Fee Pess. I honestly have a difficult time deciding whee to begin my task. The movie itself also faced such a dilemma, as the couse of events in the stoy line tanspie in the tempoal fomat of flashback with the initial action supposedly occuing "last night in San Pedo." The viewe is immediately thust into a tense scene set in the decidedly nautical suoundings of a Califonian whaf. We witness what is obviously the bitte end of a fiendish plot of ciminal popotions that has gone hoibly astay (a diection I feel this column is headed). It is a poignant scene (highlighted beautifully by the deft use of exteme close-ups) that culminates in the point blank shooting of the chaacte potayed by acto Gabiel Byne. Who is this victim, why can't he feel his legs, and who is the man in the fedoa getting eady to cap him? Moe impotantly, fom whose pespective ae we watching these events? These ae the questions that seve as the cinematic insuance policy fo the latest contibution fom diecto Byan Singe; and they ae also the theatical innads of this movie's fascinating enigma. If I could emphasize but one attibute of this splendid thille, it would most cetainly be its delightfully cyptic natue. At this moment, only bief hous afte confining my ea to the abusive impisonment of a theate chai, I am unable to conclusively answe any of the questions I myself posed! This movie is a mystey that fa exceeds any othe film of its gene in the depatment of suspense. Usually, anybody of a faily standad intellect is able to pedict the outcome of a cinematic mystey afte the customay pesentation of the puzzle itself. The enjoyment of these movies then lies in watching the chaactes go though the motions of discoveing fo themselves what is an aleady foegone conclusion fo the seemingly omniscient audience. Fo example, eveybody knows who the villains ae in "Mude, She Wote" by the fist commecial beak. The continued success of the show is due to the nauseatingly cute debacles of Angela Landsbuy (does anybody else think that she might actually commit the lion's shae of these homicides heself?). Even moe espected foms of intigue like Demme's "Silence of the Lambs" gives a faily accuate peconception of the guilty paty. "The Usual Suspects" leaves Hollywood behind in this sense by completely and pesistently befuddling anybody who expeiences it. Equally as mysteious as its naative, the toupe of actos in "The Usual Suspects" thills and chills me as well. Hee ae suppoting men (not to be chauvinist, but the film is completely pedicated on the actions of men) not seen since films like "Mille's Cossing" (I always tell my boys to put one in the head) and "A Few Good Men" (no fiends, I am NOT 'The Usual Suspects" is anything except "usual"; and to attempt to tuncate its naative fo the puposes of this column and its inheent synopsis would be a tavesty. efeing to Tom Cuise). Once again we ae teated to the wok of Gabiel Byne and Kevin Pollack; and simultaneously intoduced to the skills of acto Kevin Spacey. It was efeshing to see new faces in a quality film, as it is always much easie to settle into a movie and its dynamic antagonists when you have no biases o notions of how a chaacte should behave on the basis of it's epesentative's pevious oles. I found myself wondeing why we don't see such a cast in moe films. I would wage that it is due to the simple economics of Hollywood; people pay to see Bad Pitt and Keanu Reeves, not Spacey and Pollack. This tuth is a sad testament to the fact that some individuals ise to levels of fame based pimaily on thei appeaance. I guess that the same could be said of Elle MacPheson and Cindy Cawfod; howeve, these people ae called models, and they ae not fequently confused with actos. It seems that my time once again daws shot. In conclusion, I would like to expess my satisfaction with "The Usual Suspects" on the basis of its technical elements. The cinematogaphy, in its choice of settings and shots, is quite possibly pefect fo a movie based on illicit activities and investigative pocedue. The lighting is billiant, and we need to give the just ecognition to this film's gaffes and gips as well. Pay close attention to oveall atmosphee ceated duing the film's inteogation scenes and I'm sue that you'll agee with my laudations. Compliments and liteay fivolity aside, it is in the best inteests of anyone who appeciates a good movie to shell out the cash to see "The Usual Suspects. " Aftewads, do me a favo and let me know who you think the eal ciminal of the movie is. Not an easy question to answe, but one aised by a film that it is impossible not to enjoy. Scott Bozik is one half of last semeste's Fat Man and Daddy. At pess time. Fat Man was off galavanting in London. The two will be eunited in Januay. - Concen fo spiitual life spaks new office By COLLEEN HERBERT Accent Wite T he Univesity of Note Dame's Campus Ministy is attempting to uplift the spiituality of the gowing numbe of students who live off campus. Recently, the oganization has opened a new office in the O'Haa Lounge of LaFotune. The new office was opened in the hope of eaching out to those students who have made the decision to live off the cental campus. Campus Ministy felt that thee exists a gowing concen fo the spiitual life of the stu~ent body living off campus. Thei belief was that the main office in the libay was not poviding enough attention to those students who don't spend night and day at Note Dame. This new office deals with the same issues as the office in the libay, such as: Hite of Chistian Initiation of Adults, Confimation pepaation, Powe Lunches, and the Note Dame Encounte with Chist. The only diffeence between the two offices is that the office in LaFotune is focusing solely on the offcampus student community. When Patick Baedo, a student who woks the office along with othe students and Fathe Patick Neay, was asked about the atmosphee of the oflice he descibed it as "low key." He also mentioned that students ae encouaged to just "stop by" to discuss any spiitual aspect of life. Fo example, students could talk about how to handle the spiitual issue behind a couple whose faith diffes o discuss the issue of conveting to Catholicism. Upon seeing the need fo a new office, Campus Ministy appoached Student Activities. Though Student Activities, Campus Ministy eceived the O'Haa Lounge in LaFotune whee it is convenietly located adjacent to the infomation booth and box office. This poves to be a vey accessible location consideing the amount of time students, including off-campus students, spend at LaFotune, making it a vey centalized location on campus. Many students at Note Dame in thei junio and senio yea make the decision to move out of thei dom into offcampus housing. These students, upon leaving, tend to lead a diffeent spiitual life fom when they wee on campus. Thee is no longe mass in thei living quates and, consequently, it is a challenge to emain at the same spiitual level as when living on campus. Thee is also a loss of community feeling that is pedominant duing dom masses. Campus Ministy has ecognized this poblem and wants to help those offcampus students who ae having spiitual difficulty. They encouage the students to visit the office in ode to talk about spiitual life, thei spiitual need, o to look into joining the vaious diffeent pojects povided by Campus Ministy. Fathe Patick Neay, along with students who wok the LaFotune Campus Ministy office (such as Patick Baedo), ae a dedicated goup of individuals who give thei time in ode to seve those off-campus students seeking spiitual aid. The office is open Monday though Fiday fom lla.m. to 4 p.m., except on Thusdays and Fidays of The Obseve/Bandon Candua Campus Ministy established a new office in LaFotune to focus on students living off campus. home football games, to talk about any subject fo which a student may feel a need to discuss. So, off-campus students, what does the new Campus Ministy LaFotune office mean to you? This ministy, conveniently located, next to the infomation booth, will povide spiitual guidance to all in need. This guidance could ange fom something as simple as stopping by to chat and shae some M&M's to something as complex as helping to esolve faith diffeences in elationships involving pespective patnes. Offcampus students seeking to enich thei spiituality would be wise to stop by the Campus Ministy office in the O'Haa Lounge of LaFotune.

16 page 12 :ACCENT Monday, Octobe 2, 1995 By DAN CICHALSKI Assistant Accent Edito It's 8 p.m. on a Wednesday night. You've been eading Plato since thee with only a shot beak fo dinne. Now it's time fo a mindless study beak whee you can just sit thee, elax, and not woy about that six-page pape which must answe the question, "Based on h1s woks; if Plato wee alive today, would he wea boxes o biefs?" It's time fo television. But what do you watch? Yoti haven't watched "90210" since high school, "Gace Unde Fie" is out of the question since Bett Butle the actess has a deepe voice than Bett Butle the baseball playe, and "Dateline NBC" is just not the kind of show you want to watch while taking a beak fom the books. "Hey," you say, "I wonde what this new show, 'Cental Pak West,' is like?" CBS's new pime time dama may not be the only ookie pogam that catches you eye. But how will you know which shows ae woth you pecious time? Read on. Seveal new shows fo the fall ae included below and will give you an idea of which ones deseve you time and which ones will be off the ai befoe South Bend's fist snowfall. Bothely Love. (6 p.m. Sundays on NBC). Following the wilting of "Blossom," NBC decided to hang on to the "Seventeen" poste boy Joey Lawence ("Whoa!"). His two younge, eal-life bothes join him in this sitcom about a single mothe aising thee sons. In the athe seious pilot, Joe etuns unexpectedly afte a long absence and is not immediately fogiven by his mothe and step-bothes. His chaacte is significantly moe intelligent than the one on "Blossom," but the middle bothe has adopted the "a few keys shot of a keyboad" ole. The most laughs will come fom the antics of the youngest. As "The Cosby Show" and "Full House" have shown, a five-yea old will bing laughs almost evey time. This show has pomise although the pilot was not that hot. Oveall gade: 5. Ned and Stacey. (8:30 p.m. Sundays on FOX). Thomas Hayden Chuch also steps into a new chaacte with a highe IQ in this show about a couple living togethe in an apatment fo convenience. Known as the simple-minded mechanic Lowell on "Wings," Chuch now plays a businessman who will only get the pomotion he's looking fo if he is maied. Though the two can't stand each othe, Ned agees to let Stacey move in (since she despeately needs a place to live) only if she'll may him. Of couse, they agee to feely date othe people and Ned wastes no time: he has a date the night they get maied. This show had some hilaious moments and a well-acted seious scene at the end. It will pobably be one of the moe successful pogams this fall; Oveall gade: 7 Can't Huy Love. (7:30 p.m. Mondays on CBS). Afte only one season, "Fiends" is aleady enticing othe netwoks to attempt to duplicate its amazing success. CBS's enty is this show staing Nancy McKeon, fom "The Facts of Life," about yet anothe woman who just can't seem to find a "nice guy" no matte how had she ties. He fiends (one a female who has been aound and anothe a love-em andleave-em type guy fom The City), of couse, have suggestions on how she can impove he pesonal life. The humo is somewhat bland but still bings laughs and the opening is a simple instumental with views of the New Yok City skyline; Oveall gade: 7 The Client. (7 p.m. Tuesdays on CBS). John Gisham simply lacks the ability to wite well fo both page and television sceen. Although seveal of his books have done vey well and some have made decent movies, thee is no oom fo them on TV, especially "The Client." The actos' southen accents ae medioce at best and John Head's (in Tommy Lee Jones' ole as the Distict Attoney) Atlanta dawl sounds a lot like Kevin Costne's New Oleans in "JFK." With all the othe legal damas on the ai these days, thee is not much oom fo this one. Don't bothe; What the gades mean: 1-3: Won't see Thanksgiving. "11-6: Watch it while you can, it might not be hee next yea. 7-10: Eveyone anj thei mothe will claim they came UJP> with the idea. Oveall gade: 2 Mude One. (9 p.m. Tuesdays on ABC; soon to be Thusdays). Now this is a legal dama woth watching. ABC is attempting a lot with this one. They ae hoping to capitalize off the (demented) inteest in the O.J. Simpson tial combined with the stong following of. "NYPD Blue" while competing against last yea's Rookie Show of the Yea, "ER." Afte the fist thee weeks on Tuesday nights in "Blue's" time slot, "Mude One" moves to Thusdays to take on "ER." The plot fo the season is one mude tial (a pominent Los Angeles figue is accused of mudeing a 15- yea-old gil; he was having an affai with he olde siste) that will be esolved in May. This scenaio pesents a poblem, howeve, because in ode to be completely awae of the developments, you would have to watch evey week. This fact, combined with the move to Thusday's 9 p.m. time slot, will take away some would-be viewes and affects the fmal gade, which is still a espectable 7. Cental Pak West. (8 p.m. Wednesdays on CBS). Fist thee was "90210," then "Melose," next was "Models Inc.," and now thee's "CPW." They should have quit while they wee ahead. Sue, it's about time they set one of these in New Yok City, but it lacks ealism (one chaacte aises his hand, shouts "TAXI!" and has one in font of him within seven seconds). It has all the chaacte steeotypes: a poweful woking woman, a slack-oft goateed husband, a manipulative witch, yada yada yada. The show is aleady so involved with its demented plot that thee is little oom fo impovement o expansion with some of the chaactes. This one's going the way of "Models." Oveall gade: 4 The Single Guy and Caoline in the City (7:30p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Thusdays on NBC). These two new shows ae gouped togethe because they wee stuck in the middle of the most popula night on television. Inseted between "Fiends" and "Seinfeld." "The Single Guy" will get some of those viewes who like continuity o ae just too lazy to think of something to do fo half an hou. "Caoline" will do the same, but pobably will have moe people watching since "Seinfeld" and "ER" ae such good pogams. In "Guy," Jonathan Silveman is the lone unmaied chaacte with seveal attached fiends tying to set him up. It's a petty pitiful effot by NBC at filling the halfhou; Oveall gade: 2 "Caoline" will be moe successful and pat of the eason is that it's a bette show. Lea Thompson (fom "Back to the Futue") plays a single (of couse) catoonist in New Yok (of couse). What's diffeent about this show, howeve, is that Caoline actually has a job, and you see he at it. Often. The jokes ae bette than most of the new shows' and the laughs come moe often. This may be the best of a weak bunch; Oveall gade: 7 The Jeff Foxwothy Show. (7 p.m. Satudays on ABC). How many edneck jokes can you get into a half-hou show? Moe than is necessay. Foxwothy, the latest in a long line of stand-up comics to tun to televjsion, shouldn't have quit his day (o should it be night) job. He is, howeve, a funny man and if the wites get smat and ty not to get a diffeent edneck joke into evey episode, this one could last. Oveall gade: 5 fo potential. Basically, it looks like this fall's new shows can be thown into one of fou categoies: Good-looking twenty-somethings (most of them single) out on thei own in New Yok; yet anothe "pime-time soap" like "90210," et. al.; nighttime cop/mude/coutoom damas a la "NYPD Blue" o "L.A. Law"; and single woking moms aising a family on he own. These ae meely one epote's views on what this fall has to offe on TV. Decide fo youself which ones will take you away fom Plato. But don't feel you have to watch the new ones; you can always etun to the established hits.

17 Monday, Octobe 2, 1995 The Obseve PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL page 13 NFL Aikman hut in Cowboy's loss By JOSEPH WHITE Assocjatc:d l'c:ss WASHINGTON Toy Aikman left the game and then the Cowboys fell Fistapat. The Redskins, sensing a vulneability in thei most hated ival, esponded with a pefomance full of gitty second effot Sunday and held off a late ally fo a victoy ove peviously unbeaten Dallas. The Cowboys became stunningly motal in all phases of the game afte Aikman left with a stained calf on the Cowboys' flst possession. The Redskins defense put eight men up font and daed Wade Wilson to pass, and the 36-yea-old backup didn't find his hythm until it was too late. Emmitt Smith failed to ush fo 100 yads fo the fist time this season, and the Dallas offensive line allowed two sacks, as many as it had given up peviously all season. The Cowboys' defense was pushed aside by a patchwok Hedskins offensive line, weakened by injuies to Jim Lachey and Te Johnson. Tey Allen's 1-yad un in the thid quate that made it was the fist ushing touchdown against Dallas this season. Many of Allen's 121 yadson 30 caies - came on second and thid effots. Suddenly, his moves looked like Smith's, and quateback Gus Feotte's connections with eceive Michael Westbook had the look of Aikman-to-Michael Ivin as the Redskins picked on coneback Clayton Holmes. The Cowboys, meanwhile, made the mistakes one would expect fom the young, ebuilding Redskins: Smith lost a fumble fo the second time this season; motion penalties at the line of scimmage slowed down big second-half dives; Kendall Watkins tipd to lateal to no one in paticula while sitting on the gass duing a kickoff etun; and Bay Switze used up a timeout in thid quate while hesitating whethe to kick a field goal o go fo a fouth down. The Hedskins (2-3) effot was best exemplified by a Allen's TD eception late in the fist half. On fist-and-goal fom the Dallas 5 with 25 seconds emaining and no timeout, Allen juggled the ball, then bounced out of the ams of linebacke Dixon Edwads befoe stetching the ball ove the end zone pylon fo the scoe. Feotte (13-fo-24, 192 yads) had his own ookie mistake, sailing the ball high while unde pessue and into the hands of Cowboys safety Daen Woodson, who etuned it 37 yads fo a touchdown in the fist quate to put Dallas up But Feotte-to-Mac Logan fo 9 nine yads tied it on the Redskins next possession, and Eddie Muay's 46-yad field goal and Allen's fist TD made it at halftime. Afte a Chis Boniol field goal, Wilson (21-fo-29, 224 yads, one inteception) passed 28 yads to Ivin ealy in the fouth quate to cap a 96-yad dive that closed the gap to Anothe Boniol field goal made it with 7:44 to play, but Wilson was picked off by Tom Cate. The touchdown was vintage Maino: a quick pump fake as McDuffie culed towads the sidelines, then a pefectly-thown pass that allowed the eceive to go up and pull it in ove Roge Jones. The closing minutes undescoed the biggest diffe ence between the coaching Shulas. The Dolphins tend to do things ight in the clutch; the Bengals fold moe often than not. Cincinnati got the ball back and dove to the 27 -yad line on thee Blake completions, but Pelfey - who missed a chance to send a game to ovetime against Seattle two weeks ago - was off again. Don gently gabbed the back of Dave's head when they met in a thong of t}potes at midfield and pulled him tightly into him fo a tende cheek-to cheek hug. Maino, in his fist game back fom a buised chest, completed 33 of 48 fo 450 yads, but let the game each a tense finish by failing to finish off dives. Pete Stoyanovich tied his caee high with fou field goals- of 21, 46, 36 and 35 yads - to escue the Dolphins. His last kick put Miami up with 10 minutes left. Adding two convincing victoies ove Noth Cental and Caoll College, the t~am esumed its winning ways, extending its ecod to 8-5 and accumulating thee consecutive wins. Though the Belles dominated play on Satuday, Caoll gave them an ealy scae. Afte defeating Caoll in the fist two games, 15-9 and 15-5, Saint May's falteed in the thid, losing Head Coach Julie Schoede Biek said that in the thid game, she expeimented with a diffeent line-up, esulting in some initial confusion. Howeve, afte egouping, the Belles bounced back to win the fouth "In the thid game, we made mental mistakes," sophomoe middle/ight attack Awen Dickey said. " The Belles came back against a. stong Notl:l Cental squad with the idea that the opponent is the enemy, winning in 3 games, 15-8, 15-12, and Facing a tough Noth Cental middle attacke, the Belles adjusted by putting up a tiple block that made big hits out of the middle ineffective, thus focing the much moe manageable tip to the middle. While middle attackes Saa Stoncek and Laua Scheeg combined fo 13 blocks on the day, outside attackes Kelly Posse and Meg Kelly had 25 and 23 kills, espectively. The win was the second consecutive victoy fo the 5-4 Iish, and maked thei fist tiumph on the oad in thei past six away games, dating back to last season. While the Iish dominated evey aspect of the game, outshooting the Wildcats 26-9 and compiling a 10-5 edge on cone kicks, they needed a pai of goals in a fou minute stetch in the second half to secue a victoy.. The Iish seemed to have the edge in the fist half, outshooting the Wildcats 10-4, but wee unable to capitalize on moe than a few chances, a tend that the Bill Lanza-less Iish squad has shown pehaps too often this season. "We had a lot of key oppotunities in the game whee we ween't able to just put the ball away," commented fowad Ben Bocklage, who scoed Note Dame's gamewinning goal. Note Dame fmally got on the boad when sophomoe fowad Scott Wells put the ball past Wildcat goalie Matt Russ at the 65:26 mak of the game, on assists fom Konstantin Koloskov and Tony Capasso. The goal was the fist of Wells' caee, and showed that the potentially dangeous fowad is continuing to egain his fom following a back injuy ealy in the season. Bocklage, Wells' countepat up font, put the Iish up 2-0 with an unassisted goal just ove fou minutes late. Bocklage's goal came off a Nothwesten tunove, and is the fifth goal of the season fo the poweful feshman fom St. Louis. The Wildcats wee able to stop feshman goaltende Geg Velho's bid fo his second consecutive shutout when Aaon Stolbeg tallied the lone goal fo the now 2-7 Nothwesten squad. Stolbeg's goal came with about 5:30 left in the game, and the Iish wee able to hold off a late equalizing goal, theeby peseving thei fifth win of the season. While the win was impotant jfo the banged-up Iish squad, the consensus following the game was that the team still needs to impove. With two games this coming weekend including a cucial Big East matchup against poweful Geogetown, the Iish need to come togethe as a team in ode to emain successful. "We have the ability to beat any of these teams," commented Bocklage. "We need to get focused on just coming togethe as a team, and we have to lean to emain focused fo the entie 90 minutes of evey game." "We have to show moe of a kille instinct out thee," echoed team captain Tony Capasso. "We need to lean to put teams away when we have the chance. Too many times this season we've tended to go up 2-0 and then just sit back. "The Iish have seen 2-0 leads against Rutges, Indiana, and Boston College evapoate into losses in this young season.
