XXXIV No.S, Tuesday, Mach 22, 1955 Gallaghe's Wong The appeaance of Pesident Gallaghe at last week's Student Council meeting- was a vey gatifying- event. That D. Gailaghe should foego moe pessing business to explain his athletics policy to a compaatively small numbe of people is a vey favoable commentay upon his inteest in the student body. Of couse, we have neve doubted his inteests in the students, but continue to question the validity of the athletics policy he outlined Fiday. We think it gossly unfai. Pesident Gallaghe justifies the ecent decimation of the College's coaching staff on the basis of a diective which states, in essence, that hygiene instuctos, not having to put in two hous of pepaatoy wok fo each lectue hou, must theefoe teach thee hous fo evey 7.two peviously scheduled. The diective, of couse, was not specifically addessed to the Hygiene Depatment, but we have not yet seen it applied in any othe aea and we assume the Pesident knew v 1 ' ~*-~ ~~ he was going ' to do with the diective when he issued it. The basic faliacy in the diective lies in the assumption that instuctos of classoom couses put in two hous of pepaatoy wok fo each hou of class instuction. We find it impossible to believe, fo instance, that an instucto who teaches thee o fou sections of the same couse, as is the case in most of the subjects equied by the cuiculum, spends six. to eight hous pepaing a diffeent lectue fa each section when all of the sections ae consideing the exact same topic at pobably the exact same time! Anothe item we find most difficult to accept, is the belief that an instucto who has been teaching the same couse ove a peiod of yeas still finds it necessay to spend two hous pepaing a lectue he has aleady given on five, ten. twenty o pehaps - fifty pevious occasions? -H-is-i-tfe that thee ae-some aeas in which~stfbjectf matte is in a constant state of change due to moden de-.*.- veiopments. Howeve, we have not as yet been infomed Jthat the histoy of Euope has been ewitten o that someone has poved the binomial theoem wong o even that someone has evised the.fench language, o the Spanish, o any taught at the College.' Do not misundestand us. We ae not advocating the extension of the diective to the above aeas. Two wongs cetainly don't make a ight. We just want eveyone to know thee has. been a wong committed. The diective is wong, consequently Pesident Gallaghe is wong. Fo a Fee Raise Stating today, student leades will be.ciculatinghat esolution asking a $1 incease in the student activities fee. The signatues of 51'/' of the student body ae needed fo the adoption of this esolution, We cannot too stongly uge the membes of the student body to sign the esolution._ The necessity fo an incease in student feefunds is ugent. The stain of ising costs on a shinking budget is educing both the spiit of the student body and the statue of the School in the eyes of othes. A common misconception is the belief that all money fom student fees is given to School oganizations. Consequently, the "Why should I pay fo someone else's enjoyment?" easoning Actually only a faction of fees money finds its, way to small student goups. A lage potion of fees money is spent in the constant eplacement of lounge funitue which has.been "enjoyed" to disintegation by the student body. Anothe lage segment of student funds is used to publish THE TICKER, a copy of which eaches evey membe of the student body. «.- Muzak, the system that supplies music to all the lounges, eats up a consideable potion of the available funds. In all, ove thee-quates of the total amount of fees money available each semeste is spent on the student body as a whole and not fo the bencfitof select goups a*> some people would have us believe. K/ The student>body, though the lack of adequate funds, is oeing depived of sevices it deseves. At a school which chages a mee $7.50 fo instuction valued in the hundeds of dollas, it seems logical that the student body would be willing to pay an exta dolla fo the estoation of those, sevices fom which it extacts an infinitely geate value. Question and Answe Peic How does the diective inceasing the teaching hous of the Hygiene Depatment effect the coaches that wee emoved? a Obviously, when a cetain numbe of individuals ae necessay to pefom a job and you in- * cease the woking hous of the individual, the numbe necessay 1^ to pefom the same duties is less. Having an oveloaded staff, poduced by the incease, it is necessay to dop pesonnel. The pesonnel that would odinaily be dopped - fist would be the non-tenue staff membes, not tenue pesonnel. It so happened in ou depatment the non-tenue pesonnel wee the coaches. Thee is no intention on the pat of the Pesident of the College in any way to educe the coaching staff. Tenue has not been given to the coaching staff and the coaching staff has theefoe been on the non-tenue limb. When the limb is cut off, that is what goes. Non-tenue people happened to be the ones no longe etained, -but thee was no intention at all that the cuts should specifically hit the coaching staff. With efeence to the question of deemphasis of athletics: This Edwad Lucia I think, has to be undestood in tems of what one consides to be a legitimate athletic pogam at an educational institution. Hee, I think, the best thing fo us to do is to shapen the issue and see what ou ideas may be. When I talk of eollegiate athletics I mean" competition of students at the college who came to the college with the pupose of getting an education,.who thought they would like to engage in athletic competition, who eceived no inducement to come to the college o to paticipate in athletics. Thee ae vaious things that ae done in many institutions to ewad a playe: scholaships, tavel expenses, meals, a bed to sleep in, salay, and a new suit of clothes afte a touchdown. Wheneve you do this, you ae beginning to pay a playe.._..; Unde; the NCAA ules, a man can accept cetain amounts of pay. They call it amateuism. We call it pofessionalism. Does this (elimination of the above) constitute a deemphtsis «n athletics? " This constitutes a deemphasis on commecialism. If you ae inteested in seeing students have a chance to play instead of being shoved out of the way by people who ae bought, then you will agee that an emphasis upon amateu athletics is good. The < - %h* f& ' ** «5 sos* "The poblem iies in finding othe colleges who want ai competition against which oa teams can play/* poblem lies in finding othe colleges who want amateu competition against which- ou teams can play. Assuming the pesent situation and the hous, will it be possible to attact competent coaches to the School aqd to complete a full coaching staff? ' In efeence to tte coajihfflg pictue fo the futue, the Fall semeste: 'Most likely thee, will be.-a new tack coach, a new basketball coach a,t the Bauch School, and maybe a new fencing coach (depending entiely on Lucia's status). Whethe o not Lucia comes back as the fencing coach is entiely up to him. If the budget does not come though with $20,000 fo City College, the entie pictue might change. If ou effot with the City (budget) is a successful one, some of the money may be devcfced" "to" the TevTvaT of feshman teams. If we get the additional money, it goes into the hands of the\ Faculty Committee on Atbjg^ils. What is the 3-2 atio we've been heaing about? The 3-2 atio is an attempt to aive at an estimate to find the total wok week of teaches. Howeve, this cannot be done with any slide ule accuacy. The best thing you can do is to make a ough appoximation of the wpek When a pofesso caies on a discussion fo 50 minutes, he is in theoy supposed to spend about 2 hous outside the classoom on pepaatoy wok. If he does- not do this, his wok week is less. Fo a hou schedule of teaching, it totals hous of wok pe week, usually. Hygiene instuctos ae cedited with a full wok week. Fo a classoom instucto in hygiene, thee is full cedit given.-fo a wok week. Thee is a long- ecognized pactice at the College of giving diffeent weig"hts to diffeent,.kinds of wok in computing the wok week. Teaches have to wok two hous to get one hou of cedit.
