Hey, autumn isn't just fo pumpkins and miniatue candy anymoe, it's also fo band concets and the Slippey Rock Univesity Symphonic Wind Ensemble has you coveed. The 50-plus student-musician goup will host its fist pefomance of the season at 7:30 p.m., Oct. 16 at Swope Music Hall. Among the students paticipating is Simon Glatt, a sophomoe euphonium playe and music education majo fom Saint Mays. The concet "pomises a pefomance full of pesonality" accoding to Jonathan Helmick, assistant pofesso of music and ensemble conducto. "This concet is being themed afte non-musical elements such as catoons and caicatues," Helmick said. "It was an idea that just came to me as I was pogamming. I was inteested in exposing students to some atypical music and a divese pogam. Packed with imagey, it allows the pefomes and audience alike to dive into thei own imaginations as the concet pogesses. They felt cetain they'd discoveed the hiding place of the long-lost booty, leading the FBI to the mountainous, heavily wooded aea last Mach. Now, at the end of the coutsanctioned excavation, the FBI escoted the teasue huntes to the snow-coveed site and asked them what they saw. They gazed at the pit. Not so much as a glimme of gold dust, let alone the tons of pecious metal they said an FBI contacto's instuments had detected. Oganizing a blood The sweet histoy of candy con and its place in Halloween taditions Evey Octobe, when the weathe cools, we ecognize that it s time to stat aguing about candy con. But whethe you think the little ticoloed candies ae delicious o disgusting, no othe candy is moe iconic of Halloween. The histoy of candy con and its place as a pat of Halloween dates back moe than a centuy ago. Though nobody knows fo sue, candy con is said to have been invented in Philadelphia by Geoge Renninge, a candy make fo the Wundele Candy Company. In 1898, Geoge s ecipe ose to nationwide populaity when the Goelitz Confectionay Company picked it up and stated maketing it as Chicken Feed. The candy packages pictued a ooste and a tag line that ead, Something woth cowing fo. The initial maketing was intended to appeal to Ameicans agicultual oots, and it was touted as a yea-ound teat. The Goelitz company, now known as Jelly Belly Candy Co., has the longest histoy in the industy of making candy con. In the ealy yeas, men dubbed stinges would walk backwads pouing the ecipe mixtue into candy tays making one pass fo each colo. The pocess is now done by machine. Although the method has changed ove the yeas, the ecipe has stayed the same. It uses just eight ingedients and thee coloings: vaious sugas, fondant, con syup, vanilla, and mashmallow ceme and colos yellow, oange and white. The mix is then pessed into kenel-shaped molds. The National Confectiones Association (NCA) sites a lack of machiney as to why the candy con became known a seasonal teat decades ago. Manufactues would gea up in late August and continue making the candy though the fall. One 2013 NCA poll shows that most people today pefe to eat chocolate on Halloween (72 pecent), but candy con came in a espectable second place (12 pecent), followed by othe favoites like gummy candy, chewy candies, had candy, lollipops, licoice, and gum and mints. As fa as Halloween candies go, candy con is one of the least offensive nutition wise. A handful of candy con contains only 140 caloies and 28 gams of suga. Each piece of candy con has about 7 caloies. Today, candy con has its Photo coutesy 535media, LLC own holiday on the annual food calenda. Not supisingly, it s Octobe 30. But candy con isn t just fo Halloween anymoe. Candy makes have intoduced diffeent colos coesponding to holidays like Easte, Valentine s Day, and Chistmas, and they ve intoduced diffeent flavos too, like peppemint and pumpkin spice. Despite its many detactos, we manage to consume a lot of candy con. Accoding to the National Confectiones Association, moe than 35 million pounds of candy con will be poduced this yea that s nine billion kenels of candy. 4 4 The Daily Pess Opinion Lettes & Why tade deficits aen't so bad By WILLIAM D. LASTRAPES Univesity of Geogia (THE CONVERSATION) Most Ameicans seem to think intenational tade deficits ae a bad thing. A Mach poll, fo example, showed that moe than two-thids think the U.S. should take steps to educe the tade deficit with China, even if a esulting tade wa dives up consume pices. That s in lage pat because of the notion expessed by some that the U.S. is losing if it has a tade deficit, one of the main justifications used fo fighting a tade wa with China. Connecticut's As I ll explain, such a notion is bad economics. Compaative advantage One of the fist things budding economists lean is the pinciple of compaative advantage. A county has a compaative advantage when it can poduce a poduct o sevice moe cheaply than othes. Fo example, the U.S. specializes in poducing wheat because it is cheape to do so hee than in Japan, while Japan specializes in poducing cas fo the same eason. Specialization with tade allows consumes in both counties to buy moe wheat and moe cas. Supeme Cout uled that gay couples had the ight to may, making the state the thid behind Massachusetts and Califonia to legalize such unions. An Alaska legislative committee eleased a epot saying Gov. Saah Palin had violated state ethics laws and abused he powe by tying to have he fome bothe-in-law fied as a state toope. Thought fo Today: "The opposite of a fact is falsehood, but the opposite of one pofound tuth may vey well be anothe pofound tuth." Niels Boh, Danish physicist ( ). Much economic eseach has shown that when counties tade with each othe, global wealth gows, and all counties gain. What this means fo tade deficits Policies that aim to educe tade deficits hinde tade and wok against the potential gains fom compaative advantage. A county like the U.S. uns an annual tade deficit with a patne county when Ameicans buy moe goods and sevices fom the patne than they sell to it. As a esult, money flows out of the U.S. to the county, which sounds bad. But that s not the end of the stoy. Those foeignes with the tade suplus let s say in China now have exta saving that needs to be put to wok. A lack of poductive investment oppotunities at home means they look to othe counties like the U.S. to pofitably use thei money. In othe wods, money flowing out to pay fo impots flows back in to help pay fo poductive investment in new capital. The U.S. is an appealing place fo the Chinese to put thei money because the U.S. is eally good at poducing capital goods. Put anothe way, it has a compaative advantage in investment. In 2017, Ameicans bought about US$552 billion moe goods and sevices fom aboad than foeignes puchased fom the U.S. But foeignes sent about that amount ight back to the U.S. to help Ameican businesses build factoies, ceate Lette Dea Edito, As a esident of this community all my life, as a nuse fo ove 40 yeas in the community and afte eading the ecent lette to the edito, I stongly suppot the docto who wote it. Fist, let me say, NO family membe of mine will see a P.A. When we need medical cae, we NEED medical cae. I have seen a P.A. only once in my life, what a waste of my time and insuance money. Give me a family doc, any day. We do not need just adequate medical cae, but we ae entitled to the best esponsible, tained, medical cae. Ou insuance pays fo this. Now, I know the pape will eceive aving eviews fom those who love thei P.A s o ae family membes of them, this opinion, by all means, is not pesonal. P.A. s wee intended to aid the physician, not eplace them. If people continue to accept this level of cae, that is what they will get. Thee was a time in my nusing caee, that ambulance pesonnel had advanced lifesaving taining only, then EMT s bought advancement in medical cae fo ambulance staff, then the need fo futhe taining was appaent so Paa-Medics wee developed and added to this sevice, each step adding moe and moe highly tained staff. In my humble opinion P.A. s do not, add to advancement, this level of cae was developed as the title states Physician Assistant, not as a eplacement. Please, please, do not tell me how jobs and incease gowth. In shot, tade deficits mean that intenational capital makets ae woking the way they should. They do not imply a loss of Ameican wealth, o that othe counties ae taking advantage of the U.S. Riche as a esult In geneal, tade imbalances ae diven by natual maket foces and eflect efficient boowing and lending acoss the globe. And while it is always impotant to conside the consequences of intenational tade fo inequality and the distibution of the gains fom tade thee ae no guaantees that those gains will be evenly distibuted the end esult is highe oveall global economic gowth. Tade deficits can be a poblem when those deficits ae due to govenment boowing in counties with weak economic and political institutions, o in smalle counties whee fee capital flows might be destabilizing. But fo well-functioning economies like the U.S., tade deficits ae not an inheent poblem. In fact, we e bette off having tade deficits than imposing taiffs and estictive tade policies to pevent them. Red Sox hold off Yanks in Game 4, face Astos in ALCS NEW YORK (AP) Caig Kimbel and the Boston Red Sox held off the Yankees ninth-inning ally that ended with a video eplay, eliminating New Yok with a 4-3 victoy Tuesday night that set up a postseason ematch with the Wold Seies champion Houston Astos. Tailing in Game 4 of the AL Division Seies, the Yankees scoed twice in the ninth and had unnes at fist and second with two outs. Gleybe Toes hit a slow olle that thid baseman Eduado Nunez chaged and thew in a huy. Boston fist baseman Steve Peace stetched fo an outstanding catch that nipped Toes. The Yankees immediately challenged and, with a sellout cowd standing and hoping, the out call was upheld afte a 63-second eview. J.D. Matinez and the 108-win Red Sox eached the AL Championship Seies fo the fist time since A yea afte losing to Houston in a fou-game ALDS, they will open the best-of-seven matchup against the 103-win Astos on Satuday night at Fenway Pak. Rookie Boston manage Alex Coa was Houston s bench coach last Octobe. We e eady fo anothe shot, Red Sox pitche Rick Pocello said. A New Jesey native who gew up a Mets fan, Pocello held the Yankees to one un ove five innings fo his fist postseason win. Matt Banes and Ryan Basie followed with a pefect inning each to potect a 4-1 lead, and Red Sox ace Chis Sale followed with a eighth in a ae elief appeaance. New Yok had not put a leadoff unne on until Kimbel, a seven-time All- Sta close, walked Aaon Judge on fou pitches leading off the ninth. Didi Gegoius singled and Giancalo Stanton stuck out, dopping to 4 fo 18 (.222) with no RBIs in the seies. Luke Voit walked on fou pitches, and Kimbel hit Neil Walke on a leg with his next pitch, focing in a un. Gay Sanchez fell behind 0-2 in the count, woked it full and sent a dive that had the cowd oaing only fo Andew Benintendi to catch it on the left-field waning tack, a few feet shot of a game-ending gand slam. Toes followed with the damatic bounce that led to one of 21st centuy baseball s stangest sights a team unsue whethe to celebate, its diection depending on a decision fom the eplay oom in downtown Manhattan. A night afte Boston omped to a ecod-setting 16-1 out in a game that included thee eplay evesals, Matinez, Ian Kinsle and Nunez dove in uns in the thid inning off a wobbly CC Sabathia. Fo the second staight night, Yankees ookie manage Aaon Boone hesitated to emove his stating pitche ealy. When Boone bought in Zach Bitton to stat the fouth, Chistian Vazquez led off with an opposite-field dive ove the shot poch in ight field fo his fist caee postseason home. Not even the pesence of Bucky Dent fo the ceemonial fist pitch could inspie the 100-win Yankees, who wee outscoed in the seies, including 20-4 in the final two games. New Yok set a majo league ecod this yea fo most home uns in a season, but didn t go deep in the two games at Yankee Stadium. Dent s home un ove Fenway Pak s Geen Monste in the 1978 AL East tiebeake popelled the Yankees to thei second staight Wold Seies title, but Boston eliminated its ival in the Bonx in the teams second staight postseason meeting. In the 2004 ALCS, the Red Sox became the fist big league team to ovecome 3-0 postseason deficit, winning the final two games on the oad and going on to sweep the Wold Seies fo its fist title since Boston added championships in 2007 and 2013, becoming one of baseball s elite clubs, but the Red Sox had been knocked out in the Division Seies the pevious two yeas and had not eached the spot s final fou since thei last title. A lanky, beaded 29-yea-old ight-hande, Pocello lived a taffic jam fom Yankee Stadium in Cheste, New Jesey, and is a 2007 gaduate of Seton Hall Pep in West Oange the baseball field thee was enamed in his hono last yea afte he helped fund atificial tuf and po-style dugouts. The 2016 AL Cy Young Awad winne enteed with a 0-3 in 12 pevious postseason appeaances, which included fou stats. New Yok got its fist un on Bett Gadne s sacifice fly in the fifth. Aaon Hicks missed a home un by about 4 feet on a foul dive down the ight-field line, woked the count full, then popped out to Kinsle to backpedaled fom second to shot ight field. Sabathia, a 38-yeaold lefty who led the Yankees to thei last Wold Seies title in 2009, had been the slide-ende of New Yok s pitching staff with a 14-1 ecod following losses in the pevious two egula seasons. Pitching on 11 days est and pehaps fo the final time in pinstipes, Sabathia escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fist when Kinsle hit an inning-ending flyout to Gadne in font of the left-field wall. He needed 35 pitches to get though two innings and nicked Benintendi on the ight shoulde with a slide on his fist pitch of the thid. Steve Peace sliced a cutte into ightcente to put unnes at the cones and Matinez hit a thid-inning sacifice fly fo second staight night, giving him six RBIs in the seies. Xande Bogaets advanced Peace with a comebacke and, with David Robetson stating to wam up, Sabathia thew a wild pitch on a coss-up with Sanchez. Kinsle doubled ove a leaping Gadne fo a 2-0 lead and Nunez singled on the next pitch fo his fist RBI of the postseason. BEHIND THE PLATE A night afte thee of his calls at fist base wee evesed on video eviews, Angel Henandez called balls and stikes. Shak Bait: San Jose spoils Flyes home opene in 8-2 omp PHILADELPHIA (AP) San Jose went fom shut out to blowout in 24 hous. Joe Pavelski scoed two of San Jose s fou fistpeiod goals, and Evande Kane also scoed twice to spak the Shaks to an 8-2 win ove the Philadelphia Flyes on Tuesday night. Flyes fans wee still buzzing fom the pegame festivities fo the home opene, which included ookie mascot Gitty appelling fom the aftes to the ice, when the Shaks pounced. The Flyes tuned ove the puck at the point, Logan Coutue beat the odd-man ush and fied his fist goal of the season past Bian Elliott. Pavelski made it 2-0 just 11 seconds late when he knocked in a ebound fo his fist goal of the season. The Shaks, a Stanley Cup favoite, wee just waming up. They had five goals in thei fist thee games including a 4-0 loss a night ealie to the New Yok Islandes and then scoed five goals though two peiods. It s good to see us come out, 60-minute game, get a little confidence, Pavelski said. Guys had some chances, saw some guys scoe some goals. That goes a long way, getting one ealy and get going. With the Flyes set to play Wednesday at Ottawa, Elliott stayed in despite the miseable pefomance in font of him. He faced 31 shots 31! ove the fist two peiods. Flyes captain Claude Gioux and Sean Coutuie missed open looks in the fist that might have made it a game. Instead, they head 20,000 fans voaciously boo them off the ice to end the peiod. Coach Dave Hakstol said he should have benched Elliott, who faced 48 shots, afte the second peiod. We left him out to dy. He s ou best playe tonight, Flyes defenseman Shayne Gostisbehee said. It could have been 8-0 afte the fist. It s a little idiculous. Some of us eally got to look in the mio on this team. We ve got to espond tomoow. When you leave a guy out to dy like that, it s eally not fai. The Flyes might want to skip the eplay of this clunke. San Jose got some help late in the fist when eplay officials in New Yok awaded Pavelski his second goal fo a 3-0 lead. The puck was in play when Elliott cleaed Pavelski s shot until a whistle stopped the action. Sue enough, the eview showed Elliott s glove was behind the line when he swatted Pavelski s puck and the no-goal was ovetuned. Any time the game kind of gets out of hand like that, it s easy to elax. That s when bad things can happen, Kane said. Not against the Flyes. Kane ediected a puck off his skate late in the fist to make it 4-0. It was San Jose s fist powe-play goal of the season afte a 0-fo-12 stat. One of the main goals the Shaks had this offseason was impoving a powe-play unit that anked 16th in the league last season at 20.6 pecent. The Shaks know they have to etun to the level they wee at in , when they anked thid on the powe play on the way to the Stanley Cup Final. The Flyes had the ealy (fuy) candidate fo ookie of the yea when they unveiled Gitty in the peseason. Afte some initial confusion ove what exactly the wild-haied, googly-eyed ceatue was, Gitty was embaced and made supise visits on most majo moning and late-night talk shows. On the concouse, the Flyes aena host asked fans what they wee most excited about fo the opene, and it was nea unanimous fo Gitty. Sue enough, he swung like a pendulum as he descended fom nea the etied numbe bannes, and the cowd went wild.

9 9 The Daily Pess COPYRIGHT 2016 CREATORS SYNDICATE, INC. Dea Reades: All week, we ve been heaing esponses to my unscientific poll, inspied by a simila poll by Ann Landes in the 1970s: If you had to do it all ove again, would you have kids? Fist I pinted esponses fom the most common goup (77 pecent): paents who would gladly have childen again. Next we head fom people who didn t have childen and would choose the same way if given a do-ove (12 pecent). Yesteday I pinted esponses fom paents who said that no, they would not have childen if given the chance to do it ove again (9 pecent). Today we ll hea fom the final (and smallest) goup: people who didn t have childen but would if given anothe chance (2 pecent). ON MY OWN IN GEORGIA: I am in my ealy 70s and have neve had any childen of my own. I was an only child and theefoe neve had any nieces o nephews. I was blessed to have thee geat stepsons fom my fome husband s fist maiage. We wee always close; they consideed me thei second mothe. We watched them gaduate, seve in the militay and may and have families of thei own. Thity yeas late, my husband fell in love with anothe woman and wanted a divoce. My stepsons wee shocked and upset in the beginning but eventually leaned to accept the new woman in thei dad s life. Needless to say, I did not take the divoce well, and it was a ough two o thee yeas, but I have moved on and established a new life. Although I have emained on good tems with the boys and thei families though texts, s and occasional phone calls, it saddens me that things ae no longe the same. I am no longe included in family events, even though I now get along with thei dad and his wife, and I aely get to see them when they come to visit thei dad, who lives neaby. Often, I don t know that they wee in the aea until they ae aleady home and I am hut that they neve botheed to get in touch with me. I only have one living blood elative, with whom I m not close, so I tuly feel that I no longe have a family. So do I eget not having childen of my own? Absolutely! As the old saying goes, if I knew then what I know now... NANCY: I am in my 70s, and I eget not having childen. If I could do it all ove again, I would. Dea Annie: This is in esponse to Can t Give Away Gifts, who finds heself unable to pat with things people have given to he, even if she doesn t wea o use them. I had stoage poblems with my collection of childen s science pojects, vacation and concet T-shits, and all manne of othe collectibles. Ou beyond-he-yeas-wise daughte suggested that I take photos of my excess teasues and then donate, ecycle, euse o discad them. What an awesome spacesaving idea! It woks; my teasues ae as close as my cellphone. -- Listened to My Daughte Dea Listened: Wise indeed! This is a bight idea that I ll ecommend in the futue. Hee s anothe lette expanding on that same idea. Dea Annie: I stated taking photos of items that wee gifts fom fiends and family. Then I labeled each photo with who gave me the gift and why and put the photos in my scapbook. I also did this with handcafted doilies and lace my gandmothe made, which would not keep well. -- Audey Dea Audey: I love the idea of ceating a scapbook to catalog such items. With gifts, it eally is the thought, not the thing, that counts, and you ve found a way to hold on to the thoughts without the things. Ask Me Anything: A Yea of Advice Fom Dea Annie is out now! Local fiefighting foc- Tip Continued fom Page 1 appoximately $1,000/ student includes lodging, meals, pak tickets, bus tanspotation and flight. Students would depat fom eithe Pittsbugh o Buffalo aipots. They ae also attempting to include an educational component in the tip, which has yet to be detemined. The cost of the tip includes a fou-day pak pass to the Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom, accommodations at Disney s Pop Centuy esot with fou people assigned pe oom, thee meals pe day, and gound tanspotation fom the Olando aipot to the esot. The goup descibed the tip as a once-in-alifetime oppotunity, noting it is moe affodable going to Disney Wold as a goup though school than as an individual. Teaches Michelle Jackson and Steve Baue act as the senio class advisos. Jackson has assisted the goup with obtaining infomation on tip packages, pices, and flight infomation, as well as helping to oganize and ovesee fundaises. Cuently, the class has $15,000 in thei senio class account of which $8,000 would be available to help fund the tip. The goup is hoping the class aises between $50,000-$100,000 to fund the tip. Cuently they have aised $1,600. The class is planning multiple pofitable classwide fundaises focusing on lage events athe than smalle fundaises selling specific items. To date the class have hosted a Junk in the Tunk Yad Sale in Septembe aising $756, and a ca wash aising $826. A second ca wash is taking place on Satuday at St. Mays Chevolet. Tickets es in communities with fewe than 10,000 esidents qualify fo the aid, which is used fo taining and equipment puchases diectly elated to fighting bush and foest fies. Gant ecipients wee selected based on vulneability and adequacy of existing fie potection. Aid is ganted on a cost-shae basis, with ecipients supplying matching funds. In the 25th Senatoial Distict, 13 fie companies ae eceiving gants though this ound of funding. Local gants fo each of the awadees anged fom $500 to $9,181. A total of 132 gants wee awaded statewide in 2018, with the maximum gant awaded to any fie company being $10,000. Gants Awaded in the 25th Senatoial Distict ae as follows: Cleafield County Noth Point Voluntee Fie Co., DuBois - $7,400; Clinton County Dunnstown Fie Co., Lock Haven $1,250; may be puchased fom any senio o the day of the event. Each student is esponsible fo fundaising fo themselves. As an example, money was deposited diectly into a student s account fo each ticket they sold fo the ecent ca wash. One of thei lage fundaises, an 18-hole indoo miniatue golf event, is being planned fo Febuay. Students will contact local businesses fo sponsoships of a hole o to ceate a mini golf hole. A tounament is in the woks fo one of the days of the event. The goup is hoping some students will go above and beyond with fundaising in an effot to help othes who cannot affod the tip o who fall shot on thei fundaising goal. Whateve amount is not obtained though fundaising must be paid out of pocket by the student. Paents with questions o concens about the tip may contact the senio class advisos, teaches Michelle Jackson o Steve Baue. A $250 non-efundable deposit is equied fo the tip. The students explained this is the only downfall of the tip in that if a student is unable to fundaise enough money o pay fo the tip, they would lose thei deposit. The deposit could be offset by fundaising, as explained by the goup. Payments plans would also be set up thoughout the yea. The students plan to apply fo the SYTA Youth Foundation s oad scholaship which awad funding to youth who ae unable to affod the cost of student goup tips. Pevious class tips have cost about $300- $400/student. In the past, the senio class has taveled to Ceda Point Nittany Valley Voluntee Fie Co., Lama - $500; Renovo Fie Depatment, Renovo - $9,181; Voluntee Fie Co. of Mill Hall, Mill Hall - $3,000; Woolich Voluntee Fie Co., Lock Haven - $5,547; Elk County Johnsonbug Fie Depatment, Johnsonbug - $3,061; Jeffeson County Olive Township Voluntee Fie Co., Coolsping - $3,935; McKean County Badfod Township Voluntee Fie Depatment, Badfod - $9,134; Hamlin Township Voluntee Fie Depatment, Hazel Hust - $1,083; Potte County Coudespot Voluntee Fie Depatment, Coudespot - $3,350; Kettle Ceek Hose Co. Thoughout thei caees, students have taveled to Wallops Island at a cost of nealy $500, New Yok City at a cost of $300 and Washington, D.C. at a cost of $300. SMAHS Pincipal Joe Schlimm said his concens wee that thei fundaising does not intefee with othe school goups. Schlimm said they ae expecting paents to have to pay some out-of-pocket expense. He added meeting with paents faceto-face and getting thei commitment is an impotant aspect of the goup s effots. It s an ambitious poject, Schlimm said. The pincipal noted that, histoically, less than half of the senio class paticipates in the class tip. As pat of the planning pocess, the goup plans to send commitment foms to students and paents to gauge inteest in the tip. Cuently, thee ae 155 students in the senio class, of which 100 have expessed inteest in the tip. The goup believes this numbe could incease as the tip has been officially confimed by the school boad. The gils pitched the idea to thei classmates at the stat of this school yea, and ae planning anothe class meeting about the tip. It was noted that Johnsonbug Aea High School s senio class has taveled to Disney Wold fo many yeas. The class begins thei fundaising effots in thei feshman yea, accumulating most of thei money in thei junio and senio yeas. The cost fo thei tip is also about $1,000/student.
