On weekends fom late Mach to Novembe, you will find ou shoes dappled with one-design sailing caft heading out fo an aftenoon on the wate with fiends and family. We kicked off the yea by hosting thee winte seminas, PRO and Judge taining by JD Rosse, and we had exceptional epesentation at the SAYRA Annual Meeting in Hilton Head, whee it is impossible not to come away inspied by the insights and enegy that fill the confeence hall. We hosted thee national egattas this yea, and we hosted a Junio Olympic Festival and Gan Pix event. The leades of the 420 campaign consummated thei acquisition of six additional boats and we ae fast appoaching AYC s fist ISSAsanctioned high school egatta, which is scheduled fo Febuay 2, This event has been made possible by the pesistence and detemination of Tish Speaman and Katina Blauvelt, the coopeation of the South Atlantic Intescholastic Sailing Association, the geneous AYC membes who donated the funding to fill out ou fleet of Club 420s, and of couse, the competing high schools and the competitos themselves. We e hoping fo good wind, modeate tempeatues, and a huge tunout of suppotes to witness this fist at ou club. Ou Adult Sailing administato and ou coach both got thei Level One Instucto cetifications and continued to innovate and impove ou pogam, which was aleady excellent. Now it s even bette. We welcomed 22 new membes this yea and passed changes to ou Constitution and Bylaws that we hope will esult in a bette etention ate of Student and Associate Membes. Ou clubhouse and gounds continued to be ou membes venue of choice fo weddings, annivesaies, and Boy Scout camp outs. At this yea s No Moe Tukey Lase Regatta, the egatta oganizes chose to stat full igs, adials, and 4.7 igs togethe in one fleet. Male and female sailos anging fom 15 to 70 yeas old competed as equals. Tempeatues wee in the mid-40 s and winds wee up to 15 mph, and even moe. Youth won out this yea but expeience and cunning was ight behind. Sailing is tuly geneation and gende non-specific and it s the thing that bings us all togethe. AtlantaYachtClub.og page 2

3 Fom the Vice Commodoe Kik Maassen Vice Commodoe 2018 Congatulations to all the ecipients of awads at the 2018 banquet. Geat yea of sailing! But what I eally want to bing attention to is all of you who have volunteeed to help ou pogams and offeings on the wate. I am going to estate some of the facts that I shaed with the membes at the Annual Meeting, only because they ae staggeing to put it in pespective of all that we do as pat of AYC. Hee ae a few statistics fo this yea fo what we do on the wate. 258 individual fleet stats fo ou weekend fleet acing 15 egattas at the club this yea which, in addition to ou annual list of ecuing events, included US Sailing s Championship of Champions, US Snipe Women s National Championship, US Snipe Mastes, and The Junio Olympic Festival 20 monings whee we povided Junios stats 2 lean-to-sail classes fo adults, sping and fall. 3 summe pogams of lean-to-sail-and-ace classes fo ou younge sailos The Lase Fost Nip seies in Novembe and Decembe And new to ou pogams high school sailing To suppot that level of activity, we had 20 ace committee teams with typically seven membes on each which totals out to be aound 140 slots that have to be filled to cove the weekend fleet acing. In addition, thee wee 5 junio RC teams fo a total of 25 spots to fill. And fo the 14 egattas, each one was suppoted by a voluntee RC team typically made up of 9 pesons, so thee s anothe 130 o so voluntee spots. Let s not foget ou judges who wee out thee keeping sailing fai, so let s just say anothe 100 o so spots that ae filled each season. Now, let s think about the facilities to suppot all that. We have the Signal boat that is fully equipped to signal stats and finish fo all those aces. Thee ae five suppot boats to set and move maks, pefom escues, and we have one designated escue boat. Then we have the inflatable maks that ae put into play evey time we have a ace. All this equipment equies maintenance with so many uses. That is a temendous amount of moving pats to keep aligned in suppot of ou sailing activity. My point of eiteating these statistics is to impess upon all of us that it takes voluntees, like you, to make all this happen. And I would like to thank all of you that have been involved fo giving of you time to make sailing a happening thing at AYC. I would emiss if I didn t say this We had a Safe and Fun yea of sailing and looking fowad to 2019! 4 Fom the Rea Commodoe As Rea Commodoe you lean a lot about the opeations of the club. This yea I ve come to appeciate all the wok that goes into making the club opeate. I d like to thank Caig and Kik fo thei leadeship this yea. I thought ou egula hang outs wee a geat way to collaboate and gave me the oppotunity to lean. I d especially like to thank Ellen fo he yeas of sevice as ou teasue. I ve leaned quite a bit about the club finances, and the significant effot that is equied to keep the books staight. Thank you, Ellen! Well done! Doug, I look fowad to woking with you in the new yea. Steve Guebet Rea Commodoe 2018 I d like to thank all of the voluntees who joined me on committees that fall unde the Rea Commodoe: the entetainment team of Evie, Peggy, Betty, Tap, Adienne, Stacy, Tish, Mindy, Claudia, Susan V, Lavon, Kimbely and Jim; Tacy woking House & Gounds; Lavon keeping the kitchen unning; Ann on Safety; Whit coveing the campgound. Thanks to the Hodges family fo being the spak plug that ignited ou fleet of twelve 420s, and to Tom Hendeson and othes fo the effot that went into poviding a pope dock and stoage shed fo them. Because of these effots we ae positioned to expand ou offeings fo adult taining, junio taining, junio acing and egattas, including SAISA high school egattas. I am paticulaly thankful fo and encouaged by all the effots to each out and shae ou sailing pastime with new membes. Thanks to Heny and Jeanette Taylo, and Amy Thompson fo Adult Taining, which has become a key conduit to intoduce sailing to othes. Thanks to the Thistle, Y-Flye and Snipe fleets fo you suppot of the Adult Taining sessions, and the ally events to encouage fun on the wate. Thanks to Winky Williams fo oganizing ou Open House, and eveyone who contibuted. This, too, has become an impotant oppotunity to show potential new membes all the AYC family fun. Of paticula note, this was quite a special yea in the histoy of ou club as we hosted US Sailing s Championship of Champions egatta. Thanks to Nile and Lavon fo binging this pestigious event and hono to ou club. Thanks to all of you who volunteeed to make it happen. I believe we tuly showed off all that makes AYC a special place! Thank you, all, fo making this yea so special! My wish fo 2019 is moe of the same! Let s go sail! The Boad of Govenos appoved new ules that fomalize the pocess to equest and eseve club-owned boats such as the 420s and Optis. The pupose of these ules is to claify who can use a club-owned boat, when and fo what. We don t want to ovebuden anyone with the pocess, but do want to encouage sailing, help avoid scheduling conflicts, and ensue ou membes undestand you esponsibilities when using club-owned boats. The boat equest pocess is simila to the pocess used to equest and eseve land facilities (the clubhouse, BBQ pavilion, etc.). 6 As 2018 waps up, it s a good time to eflect on the Thistle Fleet yea, take a look at the changes we ve made, tally up ou successes, and think about whee we e headed next yea. No question, ou fleet has been on fie this yea at home, with momentum spaked by the Rally Mentality manta that daws as many as 16 Thistles and 30 skippes out on the lake on a given day. Integal to the Rally concept is ou newly adopted scoing system, which ewads paticipation by counting couses sailed but not points on Satudays getting as many people on boats as possible, tading off skippe/cew positions, sailing fo fun and sailing to lean. Sundays aces, by contast, have all been scoed in the taditional way. Thistle Repot Nancy Molito Adding to all that is ou mentoing pogam on Satuday monings, with expeienced people (both skippes and cew) shaing thei knowledge with ou newe folks, choosing thei paticula stengths to teach what they know best. Bottom line is both gowth and fun, the indispensable ingedient in pomoting family paticipation and helping to build confident new sailos without intimidating them. It is woking! By way of poof, we added SEVEN new boats and NINE new membes to the fleet this yea, including ou most ecent two, Bill Chenault, and Geoge Willis and his wife Kathleen. Welcome, all! Ou novice skippes and mentoees ae not the only ones who benefit fom these new pogams, as it takes a small navy of Thistle skippes and cew voluntees to come out Satuday afte Satuday to teach and inspie. Not only do the moe expeienced sailos continue to lean new stuff, but enthusiasm is contagious, and it is always way moe fun to sail when lots of people show up, so eveyone keeps coming back fo moe! A win/win fo sue. Ove the season ou Satuday ally tally topped out at an inspiing twenty boats, led by Eic and Keegan Musse who sailed 44(!) couses. The next fou to follow wee Dave and Diane Shively, with 31 couses, Byce and Debbie Dyden (26), David Sinclai (21) and John and Nadja Aquino (19). Sunday acing sailos, scoed in the taditional way, vied fo top honos by points. Again, Eic and Keegan Musse wee indestuctible, with 36 points and the Thistle Fleet Championship clealy in the bag. A close eplay of the ally line-up followed, with Shively (24 points) in second and Dyden (17) in thid. David Sinclai was next with 15, and David and Kathy Yapp with 12. Thee wee ten qualifies altogethe, the emaining five being Ed and Tei Maks, Mak and Mindy Shey, new membes Reid and Anne Thompson, Len Wet, and John and Nadja Aquino. In accodance with ou fleet scoing ules, Keegan Musse, Byce Dyden and David Sinclai eaned the hono of sailing fo the Thistle Fleet in the Club Championship, coveed in the last issue of Scuttlebutt. 7 Thistle, con t. fom page 6 By the time you ead this, all these folks will have been toasted, oasted and boasted at ou fleet Chistmas paty, but they still deseve to see thei names in pint. Good sailing, eveyone! The othe side of inceased paticipation at home, of couse, is less muscle fo the egatta cicuit, which these days daws only a coe goup of die-hads fom ou fleet. Now that Sean Adams and Buddy Wainwight ae gone, this yea it has mostly been the McComack clan holding up the Fleet 48 flag, with a spinkle of othe suppotes along the way. The eal missing man has been Len Wet, gone fo a walk all summe and fall to though-hike the Appalachian Tail, fulfilling his bucket list deam. We ae poud of Len but SO glad to have him back whee we can keep an eye on him! Now that he is both at home and etied, we ae hoping Len s futue will include the 2019 egatta cicuit as well as Pond Allatoona. As fo the last few egattas of 2018, thee wee 25 boats at the Old Salty, which managed to get thee aces in despite light winds. Mak Gise won, and Bob finished fouth, with Jim Robets cewing. In Bimingham, the Geat Pumpkin had thee aces on Satuday but got blown out on Sunday. Of the 26 boats Geg Giffin won, with Steve Buke in second. Bob cewed fo David Reddaway, and Jack Smith fo Bent McKenzie. Those two boats tied fo thid, with McKenzie coming out on top. Thee wee 19 Thistles at the Bloody May, at Westen Caolina in late Octobe. Although no aces wee stated on Satuday, two long aces wee completed on Sunday in mph wind. Paul Abdullah won this one, followed by those pesky Giffin bothes. Fesh-off-the-tail Len Wet, sailing with Keegan Musse and Michael Reddaway, finished eighth oveall but did the happy dance afte his fouth-place finish in the last ace, ight behind the silve winnes. Gavin and Cammie McComick cewed fo Cammie s dad, Andy Russell, and Bob McComack also skippeed on Satuday, but did not get to ace on Sunday. This is such a fun egatta, held in typically beautiful autumn weathe at a geat club that s only two hous away. It would be a good one fo moe Fleet 48 sailos next yea, maybe a good into fo some of ou newe people. In othe news, a belated welcome home to Jim and Amy Robets, einstalled in Buckhead not just aound the cone as they once wee on Walden Road, but a lot close than Savannah! And Byce shaes a heads-up egading the SAYRA Annual Meeting, which is Januay in Hilton Head SC, at the Sonesta Resot. This is whee ideas have been spawned such as the mentoing pogam, scheduling of ace management and judges taining. SAYRA is ou healthy egional link as well as the liaison between the local club level, in ou case AYC, and the national level and govening body, US Sailing. The meeting is infomative, fun and a wondeful vehicle fo netwoking. If you ae inteested in attending, contact Byce fo futhe infomation, o go to Annualmeeting. By the time you ead this it is a petty safe bet that we will have celebated the holidays Thistle-style at the Gaetts, will have new fleet offices, and will be eady to go public with ou 2019 Dixie theme! But mum s the wod fo now. Bob and Rita McComack will be chaiing the Dixie and looking fo many, many wam bodies to fill many, many voluntee slots. So memoize the wod YES and say if often!

8 Y-FLEET CAPTAINS REPORT Eddie Kuznicki, Fleet Captain Octobe winds bought two geat Y-Flye events to AYC the Gilbet D. Bees Memoial Regatta and the Championship of Champions. Back-to-back events meant a lot of planning, oganizing and oveall an incedible ally of suppot acoss the Y-Fleet and AYC community, as a whole. Heny and Jeanette Taylo gaciously took on thei second yea of speaheading The Bees planning and ovesight. Many thanks to them and all those who chipped in to make it a success. Sailos fom as fa as Canada wee on the line and the acing was spectacula. Byce Dyden, the 2018 Y-Flye National Champion, was a fontunne when his cew Mandy Hofmeiste had to head home to attend to he husband (who is now doing fine). Byce, with appoval fom the judges, was able to pivot cew to daughte Daby, and they eaned a bullet winning the egatta! Hodges and Teesa Davis/Shelby Hatche all being selected to ace. Nile aanged fo 20 of the best Y-Flyes in Noth Ameica to be loaned to the skippes paticipating in the event. Each boat was outfitted with band new sails fom Unbidled Sailing and all the boats wee identically tuned. Nile ecuited a team of Y- Flye expets fom seveal Y- Flye Fleets who volunteeed to pep the boats and keep them as equal as possible. Sailos wee on a diffeent boat fo each of the 14 aces, and afte the event seveal commented they saw vey little diffeence in the speed of the individual boats. Admittedly, I loved this ound obin appoach because I had the best job of the week sailing the altenate boat duing each ace ove to the skippe who just finished fo the switch to the next boat. Byce was AYC s top skippe scoing 4 th oveall in the Regatta. All in all, it was a geat event and the Bill Daheim/ Rod Favela team out of Texas, VX1 Sailos, took home the gold. Just a week afte the Bees, AYC and Y-Fleet #1 hosted the US Sailing Championship of Champions Regatta. Huge Kudos to Nile and Lavon Hatche fo binging such a pestigious event to AYC! National Event Sailing Champions fom fleets acoss the county submitted applications to a cental committee fo consideation to compete in the event. 9 THE BEERS Heny Taylo, Regatta Chai Octobe 13 and 14, Atlanta Yacht Club hosted the Gilbet D. Bees Memoial Regatta. We began with the Junio Regatta of 5 boats, won by Daby Dyden with he fathe, Byce Dyden as cew. Lucy and Ellie Speaman finished second, followed by Dane Tune sailing with his Dad, Bob Tune. They had thee geat aces with winds that gusted up to 15 mph. Afte a geat bunch on Satuday, 41 boats lined up on the stating line to compete in thee aces ove the two days. It was fantastic to see that many Y-Flyes sailing up and down the lake with steady wind and big gusts that kept all on alet and sailing fast. With the exception of a few fluky winds in the second ace Satuday aftenoon, the winds wee vey good and the weathe was pefect. The 41 boats wee divided into two fleets with a single stat of each ace. The Blue Fleet had 10 paticipants. Eddie Kuznicki and Ralph Leele took fist place. The Gold Fleet was won by Byce Dyden, who is also ou cuent national champion in the Y. We want to congatulate these winnes and invite all to etun to AYC in Mach of 2019 fo the annual Mid-Wintes Regatta. Jeanette Taylo and the kitchen cew did a geat job keeping all well feed and content. Don Hackbath etuned again this yea as ou PRO. He and his Race Committee did a geat job managing the aces. We also want to thank Paul White fo joining us again this yea to scoe the aces.

10 Commodoe Caig McLean & Vice Commodoe Kik Maassen Mastes of Ceemonies It was with geat pleasue that we pesided ove such a beautiful oom filled with wondeful people. Susan Venon s foest of lighted tees topped by cadinals, live guita Chistmas caols, and a savoy dinne set the stage fo awading the 2018 best sailos some special awads and the AYC annual awads. Outstanding AYC Junio Sailo Awad Junio Commodoe Ellie Speaman pesents the awad to Calyn fo he accomplishments in national and local high school sailing events. Ellen McNeel Calyn Blauvelt The Junio Yacht Club pesented Ellen McNeel, outgoing Teasue, with a 420 necklace as a thank you fo all he wok in assisting with Junio sailing finances ove the yeas. Keegan Musse The Chalie Chase Awad is given to the AYC sailo who has sailed the most scheduled fleet aces duing the yea. Keegan has 44 Thistle aces sailed, and a few Lase aces, as well. Keegan has now won this awad fo the second yea in a ow. See Chistmas, page 11

11 Chistmas, con t. fom page 10 US SAILING National One-Design Sevice Awad This awad ecognizes distinguished sevice and exceptional leadeship in the pomotion of one-design sailing and class oganization. Fo long and devoted sevice to the Snipe class. Leif Calson Katina Blauvelt pesented the Opti Fleet Awad to Leif Don Hackbath The Spotsmanship Awad is given to the AYC sailo who has accomplished a notewothy spotsmanlike act o who has made significant impovements in sailing by AYC fleets. The Bolles Family This yea a whole family was selected to eceive this awad. The Bolles always have thei boats on the wate and usually moe than one. They ae allin paticipants in eveything they do. If they e not on the wate o, changing the igging on one of thei boats, they e in the kitchen o stumming a guita, o videotaping aces o events. They even published a book of Dinghy Racing Tactics and when they leaned a few new ticks, they published a second edition. See Chistmas, page 12

12 Chistmas, con t. fom page 11 The Goodwill Ambassado Awad is given to the AYC peson who has devoted consideable time and effot to enhance the Atlanta Yacht Club s eputation in the geate sailing community, outside ou campus. Daniel began sailing just thee yeas ago. He pogessed vey quickly and stating last yea, began taining with the top Lase team in the county in Fot Laudedale. Fou months into the taining egimen, and showing uncommon natual talent, he was selected to join thei High Pefomance Team, an oppotunity affoded only to the top 6 sailos of thei 40-peson team. Daniel Escudeo The Outstanding Sailo of the Yea Awad is given to the AYC sailo who has exhibited the most outstanding sailing skills thoughout the yea, eithe at AYC o away egattas. He sails often hee at home, oganizes Rally days to stengthen his fleet and sailing in geneal, won the Y-Flye National Championship in Habo Island Yacht Club back in July, is always a favoite in the Club Championship, and competed and showed well in the US Sailing Championship of Champions. 13 Chistmas, con t. fom page 12 The Commodoe s Awad is a nonsailing tophy to ecognize that AYC peson who has contibuted special effot on behalf of AYC. The ecipient is selected by the Commodoe. The citeia fo detemining the ecipient ae that he o she: (a) Povided notewothy effot duing the yea on a voluntee basis, athe than as a committee chaipeson, o (b) Povided special voluntee effots fo many yeas, but not Lavon & Nile Hatche as a pat of a committee assignment, o (c) Has taken unusual initiative as a committee chaipeson o committee membe duing the yea, if no notewothy voluntee is found who meets citeia (a) o (b). This husband and wife team ae the essence of what AYC is all about. Lavon seves as ou most fequent chef, oganizes events, chais the kitchen committee, keeps ou tophies up to date, and as ou Scuttlebutt edito, she is ceating an achive of ou cuent ea that will be ead and appeciated by futue geneations of AYC membes. Nile is a past Commodoe, has seved on ou Boad of Govenos as ou club Secetay fo nine yeas, and was a key paticipant in the new membeship Constitution and Bylaw changes. This yea, Nile negotiated with US Sailing to bing the Championship of Champions to ou lake and ou facility. Nile planned the egatta to pefection and oganized the needed esouces and executed the plan without flaw. Nile had a lot of help making this happen, including fom his wife Lavon. They ae quite a team and I am delighted to pesent the 2018 Commodoe s Awad to Nile and Lavon Hatche. Thank you fo the many things you do fo the est of us. 15 SNIPE MASTERS AND HALLOWEEN REGATTAS GREAT WINDS FABULOUS PARTY Lake Allatoona s fall winds showed up again at the end of Octobe. Afte geat conditions at the Bees and Championship of Champions Regattas, how could this continue? But it did! Thee wee five aces ove the 3 days with winds in the 7-15 ange. Even the second ace on Satuday had to be postponed until Sunday due to winds being too heavy fo the fleet with divese skill levels. 38 acing teams, 6 junio egatta teams, 10 Mastes/Halloween teams, and 14 additional Halloween only teams, with a thid of them fom out of town. The Snipe USA Mastes National Championship was dominated by a goup of 6 teams which usually aced in a tight goup, ounding maks in close poximity and finishing within seconds of each othe. The team of Andy Pimental and Megan Place fom the Newpot and Miami aeas topped the Mastes Fleet and Lee Giffith and Nikki Buno fom Suf City, NJ took second oveall. AYC Membes Don Hackbath and Conno Milam wee fist in the Gand Mastes Division (ove 65) placing 4th, and Taasa Davis with Steve Sheman cewing wee fist in the Appentice Mastes (45 to 54) finishing 7th. The Halloween Regatta was sailed on Satuday and Sunday with the Mastes integated into the Spooks Division. The top 7 Mastes also dominated the Halloween event with the addition of Chis and Lindsey Stang fom Chaleston to spice things up. And they sue did, inseting themselves in the pecking ode in 4th between Alex and Lisa Pline fom Annapolis and Hackbath/Milam. AYC s junios stood out with 6 paticipating in the Junio egatta. Leif and Mike Calson won the junio skippe/adult cew categoy on a tie beake with Lucy Speaman and Sammy Hodges. The top J/J team was won by Evie Blauvelt and Ellie Speaman. Special awads in the Halloween egatta went to: Top placing all junio team - Evie Blauvelt and Ellie Speaman Top Maste (55+) - Andy Pimental Top Woman Skippe - Taasa Davis The land activities wee bustling with AYC Membes. We had a huge goup of junios fo tick o teating and 210 people eating steak and salmon at the Satuday night dinne, plus a costume paty with a jazz band fom KSU. 16 EC12 METER John Muhlhausen Eleven skippes paticipated in ou 2018 thee-season seies, sailing a total of 152 aces. These ae ecods in paticipation and in the numbe of aces sailed fo ou 6-yea-old AYC fleet. Robet Mitchell, who finished 3d in the winte seies, 2nd in the sping seies and 3d place in the fall, was ou most consistent skippe. Scott Venon took 2nd and 1st place in the winte and fall seies espectively. AYC and the EC12 fleet welcome ou newest membe, Geoge Willis. Geoge bings a new level of enthusiasm to ou fleet, having puchased a boat fom ou local boat yad owne Scott Venon last fall, and immediately began hitting the egatta cicuit attending Peachtee City, the Wisteia Cup in Chaleston and most ecently the Gato Regatta in The Villages located in cental Floida. Geoge has odeed a new hull and will be assembling the igging and electonics himself. Geoge gew up tinkeing with RC planes and cas, so he is ou new go-to guy when it comes to electonic issues. We ae so glad to have you aboad! If you want to join ou fleet, ou cold-weathe aces ae sailed on Muphey-Candle Lake in noth Atlanta, due to the low wate level at Allatoona. Sping and fall acing is at AYC beginning in Apil and ending in Octobe. Scott has plenty of good pe-owned boats that will amply fill seveal Chistmas stockings and impess you childen and gandbabies. Thanks to Robet and Scott fo guiding ou fleet this past yea setting maks, and oganizing ou ace schedule and the Gone with the Wind Regatta (fist weekend in Apil). 17 LASER REPORT Ed Maks Sunday, Dec. 2, we had absolutely incedible weathe fo the Fost Nip. Temps in the low 70 s with winds out of the southwest (Club cove) at 8-10 all aftenoon. With no ace committee, Mike Calson used the hip hops to set a stating line and a leewad mak. We used the thee No Wake buoys as the weathe maks. As the wind changed, we just used a diffeent buoy fo the weathe mak and it woked geat. Mike squeaked out winning the day with Ed Maks, Bian Andeson (LLSC), Tey Shipp, Bett Woods and Eddie Kuznicki in close pusuit. Looking fowad to moe geat days on Allatoona in Lase Sailing. You Gotta Love It! TEAM SOLAR Susan Calson Membes of Team SOLaR have taken thei Optis on the oad this yea. In addition to taining and acing hee at AYC, the team has packed up and competed at LLSC (Southeast Championship), Bimingham YC (Rock, Pape, Scisso s Regatta), Pivatee YC (Chili and Cheese Regatta), Pensacola YC (Junio Olympics, Opti Nationals), and Southen YC (Midwintes). 18 AWARD WINNING OPTI SAILORS Katina Blauvelt It was a geat yea fo the Opti sailos. We had 30 AYC Opti sailos paticipate in fleet aces, away-egattas, classes, Team SOLaR and Junio Week. The fleet aces give the sailos the oppotunity to put thei taining to pactice on thei home wates of Lake Allatoona. It also gives them the oppotunity to compete fo two awads Optimist Fleet Champion and the Outstanding Opti Sailo. This yea, Leif Calson won the fleet seies. Way to go Leif! Leif began sailing befoe he could swim by seving as ballast in his dad s Snipe. Yeas of on the wate expeience ae now showing big dividends. This yea, Leif took his tusty Opti on the oad and enjoyed competing at seveal lage egional and national events. In Febuay, Leif tavelled with team SOLaR to St. Petesbug Yacht Club Valentine s Day Regatta. In July, he aced in his fist USODA Opti Nationals at Pensacola, and the Calson family celebated Thanksgiving at the Southen Yacht Club in New Oleans, while Leif sailed in the USODA Midwintes. The Outstanding Opti Sailo awad is voted on by Opti sailos and thei paents fo the sailo who has demonstated good spotsmanship thoughout the yea, showing gaciousness in both winning and losing, has been helpful to pees and younge sailos, is inspiational to pees fo thei spiit and passion fo the spot of sailing. This is a special awad because you ae chosen by you pees and suounding families. Quite an hono! Tucke Mansfield was voted the Outstanding Opti Sailo of 2018! Tucke did extemely well in the fleet seies and showed excellent spotsmanship thoughout. He eceived numeous votes fom his pees and Opti paents. Hee is a sampling of one the comments: Tucke is one of the easiest going kids aound. No matte the age diffeence, Tucke is fun to be with, to sail with and to fish with. He is always geneous with his woms. At the same time, because he is a little olde, he is geat fo keeping a watchful eye on his younge sailing fiends. 19 HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY YOU NEVER SEE THE ESCUDEROS? Matina Escudeos Well, we had a plan When Miguel and I applied fo membeship at AYC two yeas ago, we wanted to join a fun goup of sailing aficionados with whom we, as a family, could spend ou weekends acing and socializing on beautiful Lake Allatoona. We had been acing ou Shak 24 up in Canada fo many yeas, but Daniel and Amaya did not eally pick up sailing until the summe of So, once membes at AYC, we bought a Thistle, a Lase, and an Opti. Pefect. So, we thought. We stated taveling to Opti egattas with Amaya (Team SOLaR) and took Daniel to some Lase egattas. Daniel kept asking fo moe. The following summe, he gave up his spot on a high level youth socce team to fully dedicate his fee time to sailing his Lase. By Septembe 2017, Daniel was signed up to tain with the top Lase team in the county at Laudedale Yacht Club with 40 kids on the oste. Fou months into the pogam, he was selected to be pat of the LYC High Pefomance Team, awaded to the top 6 sailos of the team, coached by Eika Reineke. Ou weekend outine apidly changed to taveling to Fot Laudedale fo pactices o egattas all ove Floida and othe states. We sold ou Thistle. I believe we sailed he once. We would have to fly out ealy on Satuday monings to make it to pactice fo 10 am. Back Sunday night. EVERY weekend. Schoolwok at the aipot and on the plane as his paents have told him that academics always come fist. This past summe, Daniel sailed Kiel Week (Gemany), Nieuwpootweek (Belgium), Lase Euopacup (Gemany), and Radial Youth Wolds (Gemany). By Septembe he was back in Laudedale. EVERY single weekend. One of the highlights this fall was the ODP Race clinic - 3 days in Miami taining with the Olympic coaches giving thei feedback. See Escudeo, page 20 AYC Junio Daniel Escudeo took the title at the 2018 Lase D13 Gand Pix Championship in the Lase Radials held in windy St Petesbug, FL Decembe 1-2! With a ecod paticipation of 70 Lase Radials and winds between knots, Daniel defeated some of the best Lase Radial sailos in the county, including two time Youth Wolds Champ Chalotte Rose.

21 AYC HOSTS THE SPECTACULAR BEST OF ALL TIME US SAILING CHAMPIONSHIP OF CHAMPIONS REGATTA Nile Hatche Inauguated in 1976, the championship is named in hono of Jack Bown who was noted fo his sevice as a judge, egatta oganize and membe of vaious US Sailing committees. This event pitted a wide ange of class national and Noth Ameican champions against each othe to vie fo the title of the US Sailing Championship of Champions Champion. The 2018 event featued thee AYC skippes and two AYC cews compete. Congatulations to Byce Dyden (4th) Taasa Davis/Shelby Hatche (8th) Lucy Speaman/Sammy Hodges (14th). Afte many months of planning, AYC and Y-Flye Fleet #1 hosted the US Sailing Championship of Champions on ou campus, on ou lake. Being one of US Sailing s most pestigious events, we could not have pulled off a flawless execution without the help of numeous AYC and Y-Flye voluntees. Lavon and I can t thank you enough fo poviding you time, esouces, o both, to ensue AYC lived up to its eputation of one of the best sailing venues in the southeast. The national pess we eceived fom numeous media outlets and sailing publications should make eveyone poud of what AYC can accomplish when we pull togethe. Fo those who have un egattas befoe, you know it takes a village. Fo this egatta we had ove 81 people voluntee thei time and/o esouces. That equates to 4.8 voluntees fo evey boat competing. The event also donated $771 woth of items to the club (bisto tables, table cloths, linens and kitchen paaphenalia) paid fo the club facilities and club boat expenses, AND tuned a small pofit that went into the AYC geneal fund. A success by all measues. A big thank you to the AYC Flag Offices and Boad of Govenos fo allowing this event to take place at ou club and thei suppot thoughout the planning and execution pocess. Twenty AYC membes eithe loaned thei cabins o made space available in thei homes to ensue competitos, ace committee and US Sailing officials had a place to sleep. And the offeing goes to five chuches in the Allatoona aea. Some of it also goes to a welfae fund fo a Chistmas paty fo childen in the lake neighbohood. Ou sevices ae infomal, Junio Commodoe Chis Jones sums up the goup s feelings, but they ae sincee. We go to the lake on Satudays and Sundays to ace and hold egattas and it makes it had to dess up and go all the way to town fo chuch, explains blonde Beth Nowood, the cuent chuch diecto. So each summe, beginning in June with the Junio House Paty and unning though Labo Day, the boys and gils conduct each Sunday sevice. They take tuns planning the semons, selecting hymns and giving the payes. And it s not all gils doing the wok, Chis assues. About as many boys voluntee to give the sevices as gils, he says. The only adult paticipation comes with piano playing. This is usually pefomed by a junio s mothe, often Ms. Joseph C Massee o Ms. Randolph Whitfield. Chuch congegations ange fom about 40 to 60 club membes of all ages. Thee ae some 30 o 40 cottages of club membes suounding the clubhouse pope at the lake.
